Abstract

Bird migration is commonly defined as a seasonal movement between breeding and non-breeding grounds. It generally involves relatively straight and directed large-scale movements, with a latitudinal change, and specific daily activity patterns comprising less or no foraging and more traveling time. Our main objective was to describe how this general definition applies to seabirds. We investigated migration characteristics of 6 pelagic seabird species (little auk Alle alle, Atlantic puffin Fratercula arctica, common guillemot Uria aalge, Brünnich’s guillemot U. lomvia, black-legged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla and northern fulmars Fulmarus glacialis). We analysed an extensive geolocator positional and saltwater immersion dataset from 29 colonies in the North-East Atlantic and across several years (2008-2019). We used a novel method to identify active migration periods based on segmentation of time series of track characteristics (latitude, longitude, net-squared displacement). Additionally, we used the saltwater immersion data of geolocators to infer bird activity. We found that the 6 species had, on average, 3 to 4 migration periods and 2 to 3 distinct stationary areas during the non-breeding season. On average, seabirds spent the winter at lower latitudes than their breeding colonies and followed specific migration routes rather than non-directionally dispersing from their colonies. Differences in daily activity patterns were small between migratory and stationary periods, suggesting that all species continued to forage and rest while migrating, engaging in a ‘fly-and-forage’ migratory strategy. We thereby demonstrate the importance of habitats visited during seabird migrations as those that are not just flown over, but which may be important for re-fuelling.

6. Sharing knowledge at DTU

Abstract

This project deals with how students and educators at DTU can share knowledge in a more efficient and sustainable manner. Students are now using both digital platforms and at the same time printed paper. This is not beneficial considering the separation of communication media and also raised environmental impact caused by the printing system. This system is again not structured in an optimized way which again cause an unnecessary use of resources. Instead of just reducing the negative environmental impacts from printed paper including; power, paper and toner this project aims to turn the situation around and focus on what printed paper represents: the sharing of knowledge. It is also a fact that DTU as an institution want to be among the best regarding educational practice, while also embracing new ways to be more efficient and sustainable.

30. New records of terricolous microlichens from southeast Greenland

Abstract

Twelve species of terricolous microlichens from the Angmagssalik District, Southeast Greenland, are reported: Caloplaca friesii, C. livida, Lecanora boligera, Lecidea oligotropha and Leciophysma arctophila, which are new to the lichen flora of Greenland, Rinodina conradi, which is new to the eastcoast, and Baeomyces roseus, B. rufus, Buellia geophila, B. punctata, Caloplaca tornoensis and Mycoblastus tornoensis, new to Southeast Greenland. In a discussion of the greenlandic distribution, unpublished records from the herbarium of Copenhagen (C) are incorporated. Notes on the habitats are given and the pertinent phytosociological units indicated. Some morphological and anatomical characters are commented upon briefly.

32. A preliminary account on the geology of the Selbu-Tydal area, the Trondheim region, Central Norwegian Caledonides

Abstract

Sediments and volcanic rocks (ophiolites) all of early Palaeozoic age were metamorphosed, multiply deformed, and intruded by igneous rocks during the Caledonian orogeny. At least six deformation phases including late faults are recognized. There is no simple correlation between deformation phases and tectonic style. The second deformation phase (D2) is accompanied by Barrovian type metamorphism, ranging from biotite to sillimanite grade, and transposes earlier surfaces into a new foliation, which is itself folded on a regional scale. The transposition foliation varies from crenulation cleavage to schistosity. Basic intrusives are rimmed by contact metamorphic aureoles also of syn-D2 age. Acid intrusives are of syn- to post-D2 age. Structural and stratigraphic correlations with nearby areas are attempted. An Ordovician/Silurian age is suggested for the Gula Schist Group.
