Abstract

The measurement problem is seen as an ambiguity of quantum mechanics, or, beyond that, as a contradiction within the theory: Quantum mechanics offers two conflicting descriptions of the Wigner's-friend experiment. As we argue in this note there are, however, obstacles from within quantum mechanics and regarding our perspective onto doing physics towards fully describing a measurement. We conclude that the ability to exhaustively describe a measurement is an assumption necessary for the common framing of the measurement problem and ensuing suggested solutions.

Abstract

Measurements play a crucial role in doing physics: Their results provide the basis on which we adopt or reject physical theories. In this note, we examine the effect of subjecting measurements themselves to our experience. We require that our contact with the world is empirically warranted. Therefore, we study theories that satisfy the following assumption: Interactions are accounted for so that they are empirically traceable, and observations necessarily go with such an interaction with the observed system. Examining, with regard to these assumptions, an abstract representation of measurements with tools from quantum logic leads us to contextual theories. Contextuality becomes a means to render interactions, thus also measurements, empirically tangible. The measurement becomes problematic---also beyond quantum mechanics---if one tries to commensurate the assumption of tangible interactions with the notion of a spectator theory, i.e., with the idea that measurement results are read off without effect. The problem, thus, presents itself as the collision of different epistemological stances with repercussions beyond quantum mechanics.

Abstract

Can normal science-in the Kuhnian sense-add something substantial to the discussion about the measurement problem? Does an extended Wigner's-friend Gedankenexperiment illustrate new issues? Or a new quality of known issues? Are we led to new interpretations, new perspectives, or do we iterate the previously known? The recent debate does, as we argue, neither constitute a turning point in the discussion about the measurement problem nor fundamentally challenge the legitimacy of quantum mechanics. Instead, the measurement problem asks for a reflection on fundamental paradigms of doing physics.

10. Contextuality: It's a Feature, not a Bug

Abstract

Results of measurements give legitimacy to a physical theory. What if acquiring these results in the first place necessitates what the same theory considers to be an interaction? In this note, we assume that theories account for interactions so that they are empirically traceable, and that observations necessarily go with such an interaction with the observed system. We investigate consequences of this assumption: The unfolding language game, inspired by "quantum logic," leads to a class of contextual and probabilistic theories. Contextuality becomes a means to render interactions, thus also measurements, empirically tangible. The measurement "problem" arises in all such theories, not only quantum mechanics: It is a consequence of the need for empirical evidence of interactions. And a consequence of the converse need for an interaction when obtaining that empirical evidence.

Abstract

The term "measurement" in quantum theory (as well as in other physical theories) is ambiguous: It is used to describe both an experience - e.g., an observation in an experiment - and an interaction with the system under scrutiny. If doing physics is regarded as a creative activity to develop a meaningful description of the world, then one has to carefully discriminate between the two notions: An observer's account of experience - consitutive to meaning - is hardly expressed exhaustively by the formal framework of an interaction within one particular theory. We develop a corresponding perspective onto central terms in quantum mechanics in general, and onto the measurement problem in particular.

Abstract

Recently, it has been stated that single-world interpretations of quantum theory are logically inconsistent. The claim is derived from contradicting statements of agents in a setup combining two Wigner's-friend experiments. Those statements stem from applying the measurement-update rule subjectively, i.e., only for the respective agent's own measurement. We argue that the contradiction expresses the incompatibility of collapse and unitarity - resulting in different formal descriptions of a measurement - and does not allow to dismiss any specific interpretation of quantum theory.

Abstract

The Bundesbank's balance sheet and those of other central banks in the eurozone are currently showing high "operating" losses due to the discrepancy between the low interest bearing securities holdings from bond purchases and the now higher interest bearing commercial bank deposits. However, the current accounting practice does not reflect the associated losses in value anywhere near the market level – even though, according to the PSPP ruling of the German Federal Constitutional Court, the sale of securities before final maturity should be the rule. Even under the current valuation practice, an equity gap cannot be ruled out in the future, which is generally seen as unproblematic for central banks. However, there are risks in the context of recapitalisation by the state. Within the eurozone, national and European requirements could make such capital injections necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aims Human induced pluripotent stem cell–derived atrial cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-aCM) could be a helpful tool to study the physiology and diseases of the human atrium. To fulfil this expectation, the electrophysiology of hiPSC-aCM should closely resemble the situation in the human atrium. Data on the contribution of the slowly activating delayed rectifier currents (I Ks) to repolarization are lacking for both human atrium and hiPSC-aCM. Methods and results Human atrial tissues were obtained from patients with sinus rhythm (SR) or atrial fibrillation (AF). Currents were measured in human atrial cardiomyocytes (aCM) and compared with hiPSC-aCM and used to model I Ks contribution to action potential (AP) shape. Action potential was recorded by sharp microelectrodes. HMR-1556 (1 µM) was used to identify I Ks and to estimate I Ks contribution to repolarization. Less than 50% of hiPSC-aCM and aCM possessed I Ks. Frequency of occurrence, current densities, activation/deactivation kinetics, and voltage dependency of I Ks did not differ significantly between hiPSC-aCM and aCM, neither in SR nor AF. β-Adrenoceptor stimulation with isoprenaline did not increase I Ks neither in aCM nor in hiPSC-aCM. In tissue from SR, block of I Ks with HMR-1556 did not lengthen the action potential duration, even when repolarization reserve was reduced by block of the ultra-rapid repolarizing current with 4-aminopyridine or the rapidly activating delayed rectifier potassium outward current with E-4031. Conclusion I Ks exists in hiPSC-aCM with biophysics not different from aCM. As in adult human atrium (SR and AF), I Ks does not appear to relevantly contribute to repolarization in hiPSC-aCM. Abstract

UnlabelledDifferent tissue-engineering approaches have been developed to induce and promote cardiac regeneration; however, the impact of the immune system and its responses to the various scaffold components of the engineered grafts remains unclear. Fibrin-based engineered heart tissue (EHT) was generated from neonatal Lewis (Lew) rat heart cells and transplanted onto the left ventricular surface of three different rat strains: syngeneic Lew, allogeneic Brown Norway, and immunodeficient Rowett Nude rats. Interferon spot frequency assay results showed similar degrees of systemic immune activation in the syngeneic and allogeneic groups, whereas no systemic immune response was detectable in the immunodeficient group (p < .001 vs. syngeneic and allogeneic). Histological analysis revealed much higher local infiltration of CD3- and CD68-positive cells in syngeneic and allogeneic rats than in immunodeficient animals. Enzyme-linked immunospot and immunofluorescence experiments revealed matrix-directed TH1-based rejection in syngeneic recipients without collateral impairment of heart cell survival. Bioluminescence imaging was used for in vivo longitudinal monitoring of transplanted luciferase-positive EHT constructs. Survival was documented in syngeneic and immunodeficient recipients for a period of up to 110 days after transplant, whereas in the allogeneic setting, graft survival was limited to only 14 ± 1 days. EHT strategies using autologous cells are promising approaches for cardiac repair applications. Although fibrin-based scaffold components elicited an immune response in our studies, syngeneic cells carried in the EHT were relatively unaffected.SignificanceAn initial insight into immunological consequences after transplantation of engineered heart tissue was gained through this study. Most important, this study was able to demonstrate cell survival despite rejection of matrix components. Generation of syngeneic human engineered heart tissue, possibly using human induced pluripotent stem cell technology with subsequent directed rejection of matrix components, may be a potential future approach to replace diseased myocardium.

Abstract

Little is known about the physical and mental health among police students. Based on data on Swedish police students’ physical fitness (N = 1736) and mental health (N = 407), the results show that: (a) there are gender differences; (b) the physical fitness changes during police education; in general, the students get stronger but less flexible, and the aerobic endurance increases for women but decreases for men; and (c) students’ self-reported physical activity and mental health affect their perceived police ability differently in re- lation to gender. Consequently, this study questions if the Swedish police education is preparing the students adequately for their future profession.

Models based on human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) are proposed in almost any field of physiology and pharmacology. The development of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes is expected to become a step forward to increase the translational power of cardiovascular research.
