Abstract Polyploidization plays an important role in plant speciation and adaptation. To address the role of polyploidization in grass diversification, we studied Phragmites australis, an invasive species with intraspecific variation in chromosome numbers ranging from 2n = 36 to 144. We utilized a combined analysis of ploidy estimation, phylogeny, population genetics and model simulations to investigate the evolution of P. australis. Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), we conducted a genome-wide analysis of 88 individuals sourced from diverse populations worldwide, revealing the presence of six distinct intraspecific lineages with extensive genetic admixture. Each lineage was characterized by a specific ploidy level, predominantly tetraploid or octoploid, indicative of multiple independent polyploidization events. The population size of each lineage has declined moderately in history while remaining large, except for the North American native and the US Land types, which experienced constant population size contraction throughout their history. Our investigation did not identify direct association between polyploidization events and grass invasions. Nonetheless, we observed octoploid and hexaploid lineages at contact zones in Romania, Hungary, and South Africa, suggestively due to genomic conflicts arising from allotetraploid parental lineages.

Abstract Biological invasions pose a significant threat to ecosystems, disrupting local biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The genomic underpinnings of invasiveness, however, are still largely unknown, making it difficult to predict and manage invasive species effectively. The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a dominant grass species in wetland ecosystems and has become particularly invasive when transferred from Europe to North America. Here, we present a high-quality gap-free, telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of Phragmites australis consisting of 24 pseudochromosomes and a B chromosome. Fully phased subgenomes demonstrated considerable subgenome dominance and revealed the divergence of diploid progenitors approximately 30.9 million years ago. Comparative genomics using chromosome-level scaffolds for three other lineages and a previously published draft genome assembly of an invasive lineage revealed that gene family expansions in the form of tandem duplications may have contributed to the invasiveness of the lineage. This study sheds light on the genome evolution of Arundinoideae grasses and suggests that genetic drivers, such as gene family expansions and tandem duplications, may underly the processes of biological invasion in plants. These findings provide a crucial step toward understanding and managing the genetic basis of invasiveness in plant species.

Abstract The use of constructed wetlands (CWs) is one of the best options to treat wastewater. In CWs, microorganisms play a major role in the degradation of organic pollutants but the concentration of nutrients, surfactant, and aeration (NSA) in oil-contaminated water is one of the factors that affect the persistence and metabolic functioning of hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms. In the present investigation, the influence of the addition of NSA on the persistence of the augmented bacteria, copy of (alkane hydroxylase gene) alkB gene, and its expression level in the water, soil, and plants of CWs were evaluated. The CWs mesocosms were developed by the vegetation of Typha latifolia and Cyperus laevigatus and inoculated with the bacterial consortium (Pseudomonas putida TYRI39, Acinetobacter junii TYRH47, Acinetobacter sp. CYRH17, Pseudomonas sp. CYSI27, and Pseudomonas sp. TYRH42). The mesocosms were provided with nutrients (20 mg l− 1 N, 2.6 mg l− 1 P, and 16.4 mg l− 1 K) in liquid form, surfactant Tween-20 (0.2%, v/v) in liquid form, and aeration (≥ 7.0 ± 1 mg l− 1 DO) using aeration pump. The addition of NSA in CWs enhanced the persistence and metabolic functioning of the inoculated bacteria in the water, rhizospheric soil, and plants. The maximum hydrocarbon removal (97%) was observed in the water treated by CWs having C. laevigatus, bacteria, and NSA, and it is correlated with the copy numbers of alkB and its expression level. The application of NSA in CWs not only improved bacterial persistence and catabolic gene expression but also increased plant development and hydrocarbon removal.

In many Indian regions, increased wastewater is both a threat to public health and the environment, but it also presents an opportunity as a source of water and nutrients. With less than one-third of India’s wastewater treated and an alarming water scarcity situation, efficient wastewater treatment and reuse schemes are needed to face impending water and fertiliser shortages. This study explores the application potential of wastewater fertigated Short Rotation Coppice systems (wfSRC) as a cost-efficient and promising solution for treating and reusing wastewater in a specific region (400 km2, 184 settlements) of Aligarh (UP), India. Based on real data from a local wfSRC pilot site using bamboo, willow, and poplar, we analysed the system’s treatment performance, nutrient recovery, carbon sequestration potential, land requirements, biomass production potential, and cost–benefit, under various scenarios. The results show that the pilot wfSRC system is efficiently treating 250 m3/day of domestic wastewater on 6864 m2 of land, and serving 2500 people. The land requirements for wfSRC systems vary depending on local conditions (e.g., climate, soil type, wastewater composition) and user demands (e.g., water reuse efficiency, type, and amount of biomass). The calculated areas ranged from 2.75 to 25.7 m2/PE, which equates to a required land area in the whole study region of between 108 and 1006 ha in 2036. This would produce up to 100 DM t/ha/year of valuable biomass. Early local stakeholder involvement and the monitoring of pollutants are recommended as priorities during the planning process for the large-scale implementation of wfSRC systems in India.

With the enhancement of carbon sink capacity and the intensification of biodiversity change in coastal wetlands, previous studies have well studied the relationship between species diversity and litter decomposition, a vital process of carbon cycling. However, previous studies ignored the importance of genetic diversity, which restricted our comprehensive understanding of the effects of biodiversity loss on ecosystem functions. Here, we manipulated different richness levels with litters of eight common species of coastal wetland plants and eight different genotypes of common reed (Phragmites australis) to explore the effects of species and genetic diversity on litter decomposition. A METland is an innovative treatment wetland (TW) that relies on the stimulation of electroactive bacteria (EAB) to enhance the degradation of pollutants. The METland is designed in a short-circuit mode (in the absence of an external circuit) using an electroconductive bed capable of accepting electrons from the microbial metabolism of pollutants. Although METlands are proven to be highly efficient in removing organic pollutants, the study of in situ EAB activity in full-scale systems is a challenge due to the absence of a two-electrode configuration. For the first time, four independent full-scale METland systems were tested for the removal of organic pollutants and nutrients, establishing a correlation with the electroactive response generated by the presence of EAB. The removal efficiency of the systems was enhanced by plants and mixed oxic–anoxic conditions, with an average removal of 56 g of chemical oxygen demand (COD) mbed material–3 day–1 and 2 g of total nitrogen (TN) mbed material–3 day–1 for Ørby 2 (partially saturated system). The estimated electron current density (J) provides evidence of the presence of EAB and its relationship with the removal of organic matter. The tested METland systems reached the max. values of 188.14 mA m–2 (planted system; IMDEA 1), 223.84 mA m–2 (non-planted system; IMDEA 2), 125.96 mA m–2 (full saturated system; Ørby 1), and 123.01 mA m–2 (partially saturated system; Ørby 2). These electron flow values were remarkable for systems that were not designed for energy harvesting and unequivocally show how electrons circulate even in the absence of a two-electrode system. The relation between organic load rate (OLR) at the inlet and coulombic efficiency (CE; %) showed a decreasing trend, with values ranging from 8.8 to 53% (OLR from 2.0 to 16.4 g COD m–2 day–1) for IMDEA systems and from 0.8 to 2.5% (OLR from 41.9 to 45.6 g COD m–2 day–1) for Ørby systems. This pattern denotes that the treatment of complex mixtures such as real wastewater with high and variable OLR should not necessarily result in high CE values. METland technology was validated as an innovative and efficient solution for treating wastewater for decentralized locations.

Polyploidization in plants is thought to have occurred as coping mechanism with environmental stresses. Polyploidization-driven adaptation is often achieved through interplay of gene networks involved in differentially expressed genes, which triggers the plant to evolve special phenotypic traits for survival. Phragmites australis is a cosmopolitan species with highly variable phenotypic traits and high adaptation capacity to various habitats. The species’ ploidy level varies from 3x to 12x, thus it is an ideal organism to investigate the molecular evolution of polyploidy and gene regulation mediated by different numbers of chromosome copies. In this study, we used high-throughput RNAseq data as a tool, to analyze the gene expression profiles in tetraploid and octoploid P. australis. The estimated divergence time between tetraploid and octoploid P. australis was dated to the border between Pliocene and Pleistocene. This study identified 439 up- and 956 down-regulated transcripts in tetraploids compared to octoploids. Gene ontology and pathway analysis revealed that tetraploids tended to express genes responsible for reproduction and seed germination to complete the reproduction cycle early, and expressed genes related to defense against UV-B light and fungi, whereas octoploids expressed mainly genes related to thermotolerance. Most differentially expressed genes were enriched in chaperones, folding catalysts and protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum pathways. Multiple biased isoform usage of the same gene was detected in differentially expressed genes, and the ones upregulated in octoploids were related to reduced DNA methylation. Our study provides new insights into the role of polyploidization on environmental responses and potential stress tolerance in grass species.

Vegetated filters based on short-rotation coppice (SRC) can be used to treat various industrial and municipal wastewater while producing valuable biomass in an economical and sustainable way, showing potential in the field of pollution control and bio-based circular economy. This study provides an overview of the state of the art in wastewater-fertigated SRC systems (wfSRCs) worldwide. Different designs, wastewater sources, tree species and varieties, planting schemes, geographic locations, and climates for wfSRC implementation were identified after conducting a literature review. The performance review includes standard water quality parameters, BOD5, COD, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, as well as the extent of pathogen and emergent contaminant removal and biomass production rates. Identified knowledge gaps and important factors to support the practical implementation of wfSRCs are highlighted. Europe leads the research of wfSRC, followed by North America and Australia. The available publications are mainly from developed countries (73%). The most applied and studied tree species in wfSRC systems are willows (32%), followed by eucalyptus (21%) and poplars (18%). Most of the reviewed studies used domestic wastewater (85%), followed by industrial wastewater (8%) and landfill leachate (7%). Most data show high BOD5 and COD removal efficiencies (80%). There are large differences in the documented total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiencies (12%–99% and 40%–80%, respectively). Enhanced biomass growth in wfSRC systems due to wastewater fertigation was reported in all reviewed studies, and biomass production varied from 3.7 to 40 t DM/ha/yr. WfSRCs seem to have high potential as viable and cost-effective wastewater treatment alternatives to conventional treatment technologies.

(1) Phosphorus (P) removal has proven difficult in decentralized wastewater treatment systems, and external filters installed with a highly P sorbent material have been proposed to improve the P removal. In particular, calcium (Ca) rich materials have shown promising results. (2) Eight materials (five calcareous materials, one quartz sand, and two Sol–Gel coated calcareous materials) were tested in columns fed with P-spiked tap water for two years. The experiment was operated under four periods with increased P concentration from 3.3 to 21.5 mg P L−1, and with increased surface loading rate from 18 to 227 mm d−1. After termination, the element content was measured in four column height fractions. (3) Initially, all columns removed P effectively and the calcareous materials (CAT, CAT A, and CAT C) maintained an effective removal until termination, while increases in effluent P concentration were detected already after 7 weeks for SAN and after 80–90 weeks for OPO, PHO, CAL, and HYG. The highest P content for materials were measured for the bottom fraction closest to the inlet distribution. For most materials, we observed a good agreement between the maximum sorption capacity (Qmax) and the P content in the bottom fraction; however, a discrepancy was observed for CAL, CAT A, and CAT C. (4) In conclusion, the calcareous materials provided a consistent P removal for all 24 months. Additionally, the Sol–Gel coating had a minimal effect on the P removal capacity contrary to previous findings in batch experiments for the coated materials.

Especially, calcium (Ca)-rich materials have shown promising results. (2) Five calcareous materials were tested with isotherm batch experiments. The material with the highest P adsorption capacity was selected to undergo different Sol-Gel coatings, i.e., different coating dilution ratios (1:10, 1:5, and 1:1) and exposure periods (5, 10, and 15 min). The seven coated materials were evaluated by isotherm experiments. (3) The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) was determined by fitting the Langmuir equation. Qmax for the non-coated materials, and ranged from 0.7 (sand) to 35.1 (Catsan) mg P g−1 DW, while the coated materials ranged from 7.8 to 24.7 mg P g−1 DW depending on the coating. Based on the rotated Principal Component Analysis, the most important parameters for Qmax were the texture and the Ca content. (4) Catsan was the most promising material, but when performing a Sol-Gel coating, a trade-off between preserving Qmax and the coating thickness were evident, as the materials with the thinner coating preserved more of the sorption capacity. The development of P binding materials constitutes a useful technology in decentralized wastewater treatment systems.

The potential of using the biomass of four wetland plant species (Iris pseudacorus, Juncus effusus, Phragmites australis and Typha latifolia) grown in treatment wetland systems and under natural conditions were tested to produce high-value materials using hydro-thermal liquefaction (HTL). The results show that the wetland plants biomass is suitable for biocrude and biochar production regardless of the origin. The hydrothermal liquefaction products’ (biocrude, biochar, aqueous and gaseous phase) yields vary according with the specific biomass composition of the species. Furthermore, the results show that the biomass composition can be affected by the growing condition (treatment wetland or natural unpolluted conditions) of the plants. None of the single components seems to have a determinant effect on the biocrude yields, which reached around 30% for all the analyzed plants. On the contrary, the biochar yields seem to be affected by the composition of the biomass, obtaining different yields for the different plant species, with biochar yields values from around 12% to 22%, being that Phragmites australis is the one with the highest average yield. The obtained aqueous phase from the different plant species produces homogeneous compounds for each plant species and each growing environment. The study shows that biomass from treatment wetlands is suitable for biocrude production. The environmental value of this biomass lies on the fact that it is considered a residual product with no aggregated value. The treatment wetland biomass is a potential sustainable source for biofuel production since these plants do not need extra land or nutrients for growing, and the biomass does not compete with other uses, offering new sources for enhancing the bioeconomy concepts.

(1) Phosphorus (P) is an essential plant nutrient, and P deficiency negatively affects plant growth and development. Furthermore, P is a finite and nonrenewable resource, and there is an urgent need to recover P from some of the important waste streams in society. Newly engineered calcareous materials (sol–gel coated cat litter (CATSAN®)) can bind P from wastewater in decentralized treatment systems and potentially enable P recycling into agricultural production by direct addition of the P saturated material. (2) The effects of the addition of two P-enriched calcareous materials as fertilizers for maize (Zea mays L.) growth were investigated in a mesocosm experiment. We compared fertilization with the P-enriched materials at rates of 6, 12, 25, 50, 100 kg P ha−1 yr−1 with fertilization with commercial NPK fertilizer. (3) The P fertilization by the P-enriched materials had a significant positive effect on plant height, biomass, maximum light-saturated photosynthetic rate, respiration rate, and total P content in biomass. However, plants fertilized by the commercial NPK fertilizer performed significantly better in the majority of measured parameters at identical fertilization rates. (4) The bioavailability of the P bound to the calcareous material was very low. However, the studied material has the potential to be used as part of a decentralized treatment solution to remove and subsequently recover and recycle P from wastewater.

We collected and analyzed morphological characteristics and tissue nutrient concentrations of common reed (Phragmites australis) populations from Denmark, USA, and China, harvested late summer at the peak of the biomass production. The aim was to estimate the suitability of the biomass for different bioenergy purposes. The potential of reed as bioenergy feedstock is increasingly recognized, as the species already is utilized for construction, water purification, and pulp production. Our morphological data showed that biomass yield can be allometrically predicted to be high, especially in the reed populations of the US. However, no consistent pattern according to geographical origin was detected, and especially tissue nutrient concentrations varied within and between populations. Some mineral concentrations were above the desirable threshold for biocombustion, such as nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S). Iron (Fe) was higher than the critical toxicity concentration in many populations and hence, negatively correlated with morphological and growth traits. A different harvest time is likely to result in lower ion concentrations. Some populations had low C to N ratios, which are suitable for biomethane production, while the relatively low ash content of all populations (ranging from 3.9% to 8.5%) suggested a high heating value and theoretical energy potential. Reed biomass production is a promising alternative to fossil fuels and potentially suitable for other bio-based product. Improved knowledge is needed to examine local needs and application possibilities for reed biomass.

This study aimed to assess effect of nitrogen (N) form and phosphorus (P) level on the growth and mineral composition of hybrid Napier grass. Experimental plants were grown with different N forms (NO3−, NH4NO3, and NH4+; 500 µM) and P concentrations (100 and 500 µM) under greenhouse conditions for 42 days. Growth rate, morphology, pigments, and mineral nutrients in the plant tissue were analysed. At the low P concentration, the better growth was found in the plants supplied with NH4+ (relative growth rate (RGR) = 0.05 g·g−1·d−1), but at the high P concentration, the NH4+-fed plants had 37% lower growth rates and shorter roots and stems. At the high P level, the NH4NO3−-fed plants had the highest RGR (0.04 g·g−1·d−1). The mineral nutrient concentrations in the plant tissues were only slightly affected by N form and P concentration, although the P concentrations in the plant tissue of the NO3−-fed plants supplied with the high P concentration was 26% higher compared to the low P concentration plants. The N concentrations in the plant tissues did not vary between treatments. The results showed that the optimum N form for the plant growth and biomass productivity of hybrid Napier grass depends on P level. Hybrid Napier grass may be irrigated by treated wastewater containing high concentrations of N and P, but future studies are needed to evaluate biomass production and composition when irrigating with real wastewater from animal farms.

Sediments and invertebrates were sampled from 9 stormwater retention ponds (SWRPs) and 11 natural, shallow lakes in Denmark. Samples were analyzed for 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The SWRPs received urban and highway runoff from various types of drainage areas and the lakes were located in areas of various land uses. Comparing PAHs in the sediments of the SWRPs and the lakes, it was found that levels of total PAH were similar in the two aquatic systems, with median values of 0.94 and 0.63 mg·(kg·DM)−1 in sediments of SWRPs and lakes, respectively. However, the SWRP sediments tended to have higher concentrations of high-molecular-weight PAHs than the lakes. A similar pattern was seen for PAHs accumulated in invertebrates where the median of total PAH was 2.8 and 2.1 mg·(kg·DM)−1 for SWRPs and lakes, respectively. Principal component analysis on the PAH distribution in the sediments and invertebrates showed that ponds receiving highway runoff clustered with lakes in forests and farmland. The same was the case for some of the ponds receiving runoff from residential areas. Overall, results showed that sediment PAH levels in all SWRPs receiving runoff from highways were similar to the levels found in some of the investigated natural, shallow lakes, as were the sediment PAH levels from some of the residential SWRPs. Furthermore, there was no systematic trend that one type of water body exceeded environmental quality standards (EQS) values more often than others. Together this indicates that at least some SWRPs can sustain an invertebrate ecosystem without the organisms experiencing higher bioaccumulation of PAHs then what is the case in shallow lakes of the same region.

The review aims to report the state-of-the-art constructed wetlands (CW) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region not limited to national and local conditions. The aim is with a broader view, to bring updated and sufficient information, to facilitate the use of the CW technology in the different countries of LAC. Thus, 520 experiences extracted from the 169 reviewed documents in 20 countries were analyzed. According to the data, horizontal subsurface flow wetlands are the most reported CW in the region (62%), the second most common CW technology in the region is free water surface CW (17%), then vertical flow systems (9%), followed by intensified constructed wetlands (8%), and finally French systems (4%). The performance for nutrient removal is analyzed, finding that the mean of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorous (TP) removal efficiencies varies from 65% to 83%, 55% to 72%, and 30% to 84%, respectively. The results suggest a generally good performance for COD and TN removal, but a low performance for TP removal. Regarding plant species used for CWs, 114 different plant species were reported, being until now the most extensive report about plant species used in CWs in the LAC region.

Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, T. angustifolia and Arundo donax are tall wetland graminoids with the potential to replace fossil fuels under sustainable cultivation conditions. We investigated the biomethane (CH4) production of these four species, including four different genotypes of P. australis, which represent the high intraspecific diversity of European reed. All plants were grown under three different macronutrient supplies (no nutrients added, an equivalent of 75 kg N ha−1 year−1 added and an equivalent of 500 kg N ha−1 year−1 added). Biomethane production was measured in four independent batch digestion tests. Across all experiments, fertilization regime had little effect on CH4 yield, which was on average 222 ± 31 L kg−1 volatile solids (VS). The lowest yield was produced by T. angustifolia (140 L kgVS−1) receiving no nutrients, while the highest yield was produced by A. donax (305 L kgVS−1) in the highest nutrient treatment. The intraspecific diversity of P. australis did not affect biomethane production. All P. australis genotypes produced on average 226 ± 19 L CH4 kgVS−1, which, although high, was still lower than conventional biogas species. The biomass production of P. australis was less increased by fertilization than that of Typha sp. and A. donax, but all species had similar biomass without fertilization.

Abstract Compared with non‐invasive species, invasive plant species may benefit from certain advantageous traits, for example, higher photosynthesis capacity and resource/energy‐use efficiency. These traits can be preadapted prior to introduction, but can also be acquired through evolution following introduction to the new range. Disentangling the origins of these advantageous traits is a fundamental and emerging question in invasion ecology. We conducted a multiple comparative experiment under identical environmental condition with the invasive haplotype M lineage of the wetland grass Phragmites australis and compared the ecophysiological traits of this invasive haplotype M in North America with those of the European ancestor and the conspecific North American native haplotype E lineage, P. australis ssp. americanus. The invasive haplotype M differed significantly from the native North American conspecific haplotype E in several ecophysiological and morphological traits, and the European haplotype M had a more efficient photosynthetic apparatus than the native North American P. australis ssp. americanus. Within the haplotype M lineage, the introduced North American P. australis exhibited different biomass allocation patterns and resource/energy‐use strategies compared to its European ancestor group. A discriminant analysis of principal components separated the haplotype M and the haplotype E lineages completely along the first canonical axis, highly related to photosynthetic gas‐exchange parameters, photosynthetic energy‐use efficiency and payback time. The second canonical axis, highly related to photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency and construction costs, significantly separated the introduced P. australis in North America from its European ancestor. Synthesis. We conclude that the European P. australis lineage was preadapted to be invasive prior to its introduction, and that the invasion in North America is further stimulated by rapid post‐introduction evolution in several advantageous traits. The multicomparison approach used in this study could be an effective approach for distinguishing preadaptation and post‐introduction evolution of invasive species. Further research is needed to link the observed changes in invasive traits to the genetic variation and the interaction with the environment.

Phragmites australis is a cosmopolitan grass and often the dominant species in the ecosystems it inhabits. Due to high intraspecific diversity and phenotypic plasticity, P. australis has an extensive ecological amplitude and a great capacity to acclimate to adverse environmental conditions; it can therefore offer valuable insights into plant responses to global change. Here we review the ecology and ecophysiology of prominent P. australis lineages and their responses to multiple forms of global change. Key findings of our review are that: (1) P. australis lineages are well-adapted to regions of their phylogeographic origin and therefore respond differently to changes in climatic conditions such as temperature or atmospheric CO2; (2) each lineage consists of populations that may occur in geographically different habitats and contain multiple genotypes; (3) the phenotypic plasticity of functional and fitness-related traits of a genotype determine the responses to global change factors; (4) genotypes with high plasticity to environmental drivers may acclimate or even vastly expand their ranges, genotypes of medium plasticity must acclimate or experience range-shifts, and those with low plasticity may face local extinction; (5) responses to ancillary types of global change, like shifting levels of soil salinity, flooding, and drought, are not consistent within lineages and depend on adaptation of individual genotypes. These patterns suggest that the diverse lineages of P. australis will undergo intense selective pressure in the face of global change such that the distributions and interactions of co-occurring lineages, as well as those of genotypes within-lineages, are very likely to be altered. We propose that the strong latitudinal clines within and between P. australis lineages can be a useful tool for predicting plant responses to climate change in general and present a conceptual framework for using P. australis lineages to predict plant responses to global change and its consequences.

Thí nghiệm được bố trí hoàn toàn ngẫu nhiên với 12 lần lặp lại ở mỗi nghiệm thức. Sinh trưởng của Mồm mỡ và chất lượng nước được đánh giá sau mỗi 2 tuần trong 8 tuần. Kết quả cho thấy ở tỷ lệ NH4-N:NO3-N 1:3 và 0:4 cỏ Mồm mỡ có khả năng tăng trưởng sinh khối khô tốt. Nồng độ NO3-Nvà NH4-N trong nước thải tăng giúp tăng hàm lượng và khả năng hấp thu NO3-N,NH4-N trong cả thân và rễ. Ở nồng độ NH4-N cao (tỷ lệ 4:0 và 3:1) có dấu hiệu gây ngộ độc cho cây với biểu hiện rễ kém phát triển và úng lá ở tuần thứ 8. Kết quả cho thấy đạm nitrate thích hợp hơn cho sinh trưởng và hấp thu đạm của cỏ Mồm mỡ. Vì vậy, cỏ Mồm mỡ có tiềm năng trong việc ứng dụng vào các hệ thống đất ngập nước để xử lý nước thải ao nuôi thâm canh cá tra có nồng độ đạm nitrate cao.

Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá khả năng sinh trưởng và hấp thu đạm, lân bổ sung thêm trong nước thải ao nuôi thâm canh cá tra của cỏ Mồm mỡ (Hymenachne acutigluma). Cây được trồng ở 4 mật độ là 10, 20, 30 và 40 chồi/m2 và đối chứng không cây. Thí nghiệm được bố trí hoàn toàn ngẫu nhiên với 12 lần lặp lại. Sinh trưởng của cỏ Mồm mỡ và chất lượng nước được đánh giá sau mỗi 2 tuần trong thời gian 8 tuần. Sinh khối khô lúc thu hoạch của cỏ Mồm mỡ trồng ở mật độ 40 chồi/m2 cao hơn 10 chồi/m2. Mật độ cây trồng hầu như không ảnh hưởng đến hàm lượng đạm và lân trong thân và rễ, nhưng ảnh hưởng khả năng hấp thu đạm và lân của cỏ Mồm mỡ. Tuy nhiên, không có sự khác biệt về hiệu suất xử lý TN, TP giữa 4 mật độ trồng, và đạt tương ứng 80-84,8% và 93,3-95,6% cao hơn nghiệm thức đối chứng không cây. Kết quả ghi nhận ở mật độ trồng 40 chồi/m2 cỏ Mồm mỡ có khả năng sinh trưởng, hấp thu đạm, lân tốt hơn.

Phosphorus (P) is a limited resource and can promote eutrophication of water streams and acidification of oceans when discharged. Crushed autoclaved aerated concrete (CAAC), a by-product from demolition, has shown great potential for recovering P. The potential of CAAC to be used in nature-based solutions as a P-reactive filter medium was evaluated by performing preliminary batch essays. Here, we evaluated the interactions and main effects of the initial concentration of P (Pi; 5, 10 or 20 mg L−1), particle size (PS; 4 or 5 mm) and contact time (CT; 60, 180, 360, 720 and 1440 min) upon the removal. We performed physical and chemical characterization to understand the removal processes. Data collected were fitted in adsorption kinetic models. The statistical analysis showed a significant interaction between CT and Pi, with the combination of its main effects stronger on P removal than each one separately. Intriguingly, we noticed that the higher the concentration of Pi, the faster and higher the removal of P. Contrary to expectations, PS 5 mm showed higher removal rates than PS 4 mm, indicating that besides adsorption, other unidentified chemical processes are in place. Further studies using columns/pilots with real wastewater are recommended for a future follow-up.

Nghiên cứu này được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá ảnh hưởng của diện tích đất ngập nước (ĐNN) tương ứng cho các nghiệm thức là 1,77; 0,78 và 0,41 m2 lên chất lượng nước bể nuôi tôm thâm canh tuần hoàn kín. Mỗi hệ thống ĐNN được bố trí theo kiểu lắp nối tiếp hệ thống chảy ngầm đứng và chảy ngầm ngang. Thực vật được trồng trên các hệ thống là cây Huệ nước (Canna sp.) với mật độ 10 cây/m2. Thí nghiệm được tiến hành trong 70 ngày. Kết quả cho thấy, diện tích ĐNN càng lớn thì chất lượng nước càng tốt. Trong thời gian nghiên cứu không cần thay nước mới nhưng nồng độ các chất ô nhiễm ở tất cả các nghiệm thức đều nằm trong ngưỡng an toàn cho tôm phát triển. Sự sinh trưởng của tôm không bị ảnh hưởng bởi diện tích đất ngập nước, hệ số chuyển hóa thức ăn (FCR) ở ba nghiệm thức trong khoảng 1,49 – 2,47. Trong thí nghiệm hiện tại, diện tích 0,78 m2 là thích hợp để tiếp tục nghiên cứu ứng dụng ĐNN vào thực tế vì vừa đảm bảo chất lượng nước cũng như sự sinh trưởng của tôm.

Global management of wetlands to suppress greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, facilitate carbon (C) sequestration, and reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations while simultaneously promoting agricultural gains is paramount. However, studies that relate variability in CO2 and CH4 emissions at large spatial scales are limited. We investigated three-year emissions of soil CO2 and CH4 from the primary wetland types of the Liaohe Delta, China, by focusing on a total wetland area of 3287 km2. One percent is Suaeda salsa, 24% is Phragmites australis, and 75% is rice. While S. salsa wetlands are under somewhat natural tidal influence, P. australis and rice are managed hydrologically for paper and food, respectively. Total C emissions from CO2 and CH4 from these wetland soils were 2.9 Tg C/year, ranging from 2.5 to 3.3 Tg C/year depending on the year assessed. Primary emissions were from CO2 (~98%). Photosynthetic uptake of CO2 would mitigate most of the soil CO2 emissions, but CH4 emissions would persist. Overall, CH4 fluxes were high when soil temperatures were >18°C and pore water salinity

Microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) rely on the presence of the metabolic activity of electroactive bacteria for the use of solid-state electrodes for oxidizing different kinds of compound that can lead to the synthesis of chemicals, bioremediation of polluted matrices, the treatment of contaminants of interest, as well as the recovery of energy. Keeping these possibilities in mind, there has been growing interest in the use of electrochemical technologies for wastewater treatment, if possible with simultaneous power generation, since the beginning of the present century. In the last few years, there has been growing interest in exploring the possibility of merging MET with constructed wetlands offering a new option of an intensified wetland system that could maintain a high performance with a lower footprint. Based on that interest, this paper explains the general principles of MET, and the different known extracellular electron transfer mechanisms ruling the interaction between electroactive bacteria and potential solid-state electron acceptors. It also looks at the adoption of those principles for the development of MET set-ups for simultaneous wastewater treatment and power generation, and the challenges that the technology faces. Ultimately, the most recent developments in setups that merge MET with constructed wetlands are presented and discussed.

The responses of Acorus calamus under greenhouse conditions for 56 days when exposed to three dilutions (25%, 50%, and undiluted) of anaerobic digester effluent from a swine farm were determined. Plant growth, morphology, pigments, and minerals in plant tissues as well as water quality were investigated. The plants grew well in all concentrations of anaerobic digester effluent with no statistically significant effects on plant growth and morphology, and without any toxicity symptoms. The NH4+ concentrations in leaves and roots and the NO3− concentrations in leaves as well as the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentrations in the plant tissues increased with increasing effluent concentration. The nutrients in the anaerobic digester effluent were removed effectively (NH4-N > 99% removal; PO4-P > 80% removal), with highest removal rates in the undiluted digester effluent. The removal of total suspended solids (>80% in 42 days) and chemical oxygen demand (37–53%) were lower. The dissolved oxygen concentration in the anaerobic digester effluent increased overtime, probably because of root oxygen release. It is concluded that Acorus calamus could be a promising species for treating high-strength wastewater with high nutrient concentrations, such as effluents from anaerobic digesters as well as other types of agricultural wastewaters.

Sludge Treatment Reed Beds (STRBs) are widely used in Northern Europe to dewater and mineralize surplus sludge from activated sludge systems used to treat urban domestic sewage. STRBs are low-technology, energy-efficient, and do not require addition of chemicals. They dewater and stabilize the sludge and produce a final product that can be safely used as a fertilizer for agricultural crops. Long-term sludge reduction takes place in the reed beds due to dewatering and mineralization of the organic matter in the sludge. Although, in theory, a simple technique relying largely on natural processes, experience has shown that it is very important to understand and respect the basic design and operation requirements of STRBs. This paper describes the basic design and operation requirements of STRBs, with special focus on pivotal requirements to respect in order to secure proper functioning. Also, the paper summarizes performance experience concerning final dry matter content, degree of mineralization, emission of greenhouse gases, and degradation of micro-pollutants in STRBs. There are still a number of outstanding issues that are not fully understood, particularly in relation to the importance of the sludge quality for the dewatering in an STRB. Therefore, extreme care should be taken when attempting to extrapolate the use of STRBs to applications and regions outside of their ‘normal’ and documented area of application.

This study aimed at optimizing horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs) to improve hydraulic performance and pollutant removal efficiency. A groundwater modeling package (MODFLOW) was used to optimize three design parameters (length-to-width ratio, inlet/outlet-to-length ratio, and substrate size configuration). Using the optimized parameters, three pilot-scale CWs were built to treat actual wastewater. For model validation, we used a tracer test to evaluate hydraulic performance, and investigated the pollutant spatial distributions and removal efficiencies. We conclude that MODFLOW is suitable for designing CWs, accurately predicting that increasing hydraulic conductivity from surface to bottom layers could improve performance. However, the effect of vegetation, which decreased the hydraulic conductivity of the surface layer, should be considered to improve simulation results. Multilayer substrate configuration, with increasing hydraulic conductivity from the surface to bottom layers, significantly increased pollutant removal compared with monolayer configuration. The spatial variation in pollutant transport and degradation through the filling substrate showed that the multilayer configuration was able to increase use of the available space and moderately reduced short-circuiting and dead zones. Thus, multilayer CWs had higher experimental retention times, effective volume fractions and hydraulic efficiencies, and lower short-circuiting compared with monolayer CWs operating under similar conditions.

Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là khảo sát khả năng của hệ thống đất ngập nước kiến tạo thiết kế dòng chảy ngầm ngang và ngầm đứng trong việc xử lý nước bể nuôi cá tra thâm canh tuần hoàn kín. Nước đầu vào (hay nước từ bể cá) và nước đầu ra của hệ thống xử lý được thu mỗi lần một tuần trong vòng 8 tuần và đánh giá những chỉ tiêu liên quan đến chất lượng nước. Hệ thống đất ngập nước chảy ngầm đứng (VF) có nồng độ NH4-N, TKN, PO4-P và TP trong nước bể nuôi thấp hơn so với hệ thống chảy ngầm ngang (HF). Ngoài ra, hệ thống VF giúp cải thiện điều kiện oxy trong nước bể nuôi. Theo ước tính cân bằng dinh dưỡng, hệ thống VF có thể loại bỏ 74% N và 69% P trong nước bể nuôi cá, trong khi hệ thống HF loại bỏ được 86% N và 72% P. Điều đáng lưu ý, trong thời gian nghiên cứu việc thay nước mới là không cần thiết mà chất lượng nước trong bể nuôi cá vẫn duy trì trong giới hạn cho cá sinh trưởng bình thường. Những nghiên cứu trong tương lai về hiệu quả xử lý của hệ thống trong thời gian dài hơn và tìm loài cây thích hợp hơn cho hệ thống VF là cần thiết.

Bài viết này mô tả tầm quan trọng của việc sử dụng hệ thống bãi lọc trồng sậy qui mô nhỏ trong việc xử lý nước thải sinh hoạt phi tập trung ở Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long, Việt Nam, với kết quả là nước thải đầu ra của hệ thống có chất lượng tốt. Hệ thống đất ngập nước kiến tạo nền cát trồng Sậy có dòng chảy ngầm ngang (HSSF CWs) được xây dựng tại khu 1, Đại học Cần Thơ. Hệ thống được vận hành với hai mức tải nạp thủy lực (HLRs) là 31 và 62 mm/ngày. Khả năng xử lý TSS, lân hòa tan (PO4-P) và lân tổng (TP) là rất hiệu quả và không đổi cho cả hai mức HLRs với hiệu suất xử lý trung bình tương ứng khoảng 94, 99 và 99%, trong khi đó hiệu suất xử lý nhu cầu oxy sinh học (BOD5), nhu cầu oxy hóa học (COD), tổng đạm Kjeldahl (TKN) và đạm amôn (NH4-N) giảm khi HLR tăng, và có giá trị trung bình nằm trong khoảng tương ứng là 47-71, 68-84, 63-87 và 69-91%. Kết quả cho thấy bằng cách sử dụng HSSF CWs trong việc xử lý nước thải sinh hoạt là phương pháp khả thi. Chất lượng nước thải đầu ra của hệ thống ở mức HLR cao 62 mm/ngày (tương đương 1200 L/ngày) đạt tiêu chuẩn Việt Nam cho phép xả thải vào nguồn nước mặt.

Không có sự khác biệt đáng kể về phần trăm nẩy mầm giữa nghiệm thức sáng và tối. Sự phát triển chiều dài rễ mầm bị ảnh hưởng đáng kể bởi điều kiện ánh sáng và nhiệt độ. Sự nẩy mầm tốt nhất ở nhiệt độ 30oC và 37oC, tuy nhiên hạt giống cũng nẩy mầm ở 22oC. Không có sự nẩy mầm ở nhiệt độ thấp(5oC và 13oC)và cao(45oC). Nghiên cứu ảnh hưởng của độ mặn và các phương pháp tiền xử lý hạt, kết quả cho thấy độ mặn lên đến 100 mM(5.8ppt)không ảnh hưởng đến tỉ lệ nẩy mầm, nhưng từ 200 đến 250 mM sự nảy mầm giảm 17 đến 29 %. Hạt điên điển(Sesbania sesban)được xử lý trước trong nước ấm, acid sulphuric hay calcium sulphate sẽ có tác động nhỏ đến tỉ lệ nẩy mầm.
