The main goal of this paper is to provide an analysis of vampirism in the themes, narrative, and characters of NBC’s Hannibal. However, the paper focuses mostly on the vampiric traits of the main antagonist of the series, Hannibal Lecter. The paper discusses Hannibal Lecter’s portrayal and equates his appearance, heritage, and personality with that of the gothic vampire villain. Furthermore, transgression is argued to be one of the most critical aspects of not only the gothic vampire villain, but also of the gothic genre and is explored in the series through themes of transformation, sexuality, and religion. Since dreams are a recurrent phenomenon in the series, the paper explains dreams as a kind of colonization of the body, similar to that of Dracula. Consequently, because of the mentioned analyses, the paper suggests NBC’s Hannibal to be a contemporary work of vampire fiction. Glavni cilj ovoga rada je analizirati vampirizam u tematici, radnji i likovima NBC-ovog Hannibala. Međutim, rad je najvište usredotočen na vampirske osobine glavnog antagonista serije, Hannibala Lectera. Rad analizira prikaz Hannibala Lectera i poistovjećuje njegov izgled, podrijetlo i osobnost s gotičkim vampir antagonistom. Nadalje, transgresija je objašnjena kao jedan od ključnih aspekata ne samo gotičkog vampir antagonista, nego i čitavog gotičkog žanra te je u seriji prikazana kroz tematiku preobrazbe, seksualnosti i religije. S obzirom da su snovi učestali fenomen u seriji, rad ih objašnjava kao vrstu kolonizacije tijela, nalik Drakulinoj. Zbog spomenutih analiza, rad sugerira da je NBC-ov Hannibal suvremeno djelo vampirske fikcije.

Power has been an interesting concept for many scholars, especially in the field of sociology and philosophy. It was usually considered negative and destructive, used to alter people‟s decisions and goals. More traditional explanations viewed power as something to be held and fought for whereas modern approaches accept the idea of limited human ability to change already built structures. The Foucauldian notion of power explains it in relation to knowledge and total institutions as places where power with the help of knowledge is best practiced. The main role of prison as a total institution is to accept and internalize the socially accepted behavior so that normalization could take place. In popular culture, psychotic individuals are considered abnormal and the phenomenon of a psychopath serial killer is prominent in literature, movies, and TV series. The aim of this thesis paper is to examine the subversion of power that occurs in a relationship between serial killers and the police in the process of gathering knowledge. The theoretical background of the paper is Michel Foucault‟s critical theory. The focus is on the dynamics of the relationship between characters of agents and killers from Thomas Harris' novels Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal and the TV series Mindhunter. The core of the analysis will be the representation of the power play between agents Starling, Graham, Holden, and Tench and serial killers Hannibal Lecter and Edmund Kemper. Pojam moći je zanimljiv za mnoge znanstvenike, napose u poljima poput sociologije ili filozofije. Uobičajeno se smatra negativnim i destruktivnim te se koristi kako bi se mijenjale ljudske odluke i ciljevi. Tradicionalna objašnjenja moć promatraju kao nešto što se posjeduje i za što se bori, dok ona moderna prihvaćaju ideju ograničene ljudske mogućnosti da se mijenjaju prethodno utvrđene strukture. Foucaultov pojam moći dovodi u vezu znanje i moć te totalne institucije kao mjesta gdje se moć uz pomoć znanja najbolje provodi u praksi. Glavna uloga zatvora kao totalne institucije jest prihvatiti i internalizirati društveno prihvatljivo ponašanje kako bi došlo do normalizacije. U popularnoj kulturi psihotični pojedinci su smatrani abnormalnima te je fenomen serijskog ubojice psihopata postao čest u književnosti, filmu i televizijskim serijama. Cilj ovog rada jest ispitati subverziju moći do koje dolazi u odnosu između serijskih ubojica i agenata u postupku prikupljanja znanja. Teorijska podloga rada jest Foucaultova kritička teorija. Fokus rada jest dinamika veze između likova agenata i ubojica iz romana Thomasa Harrisa Crveni zmaj, Kad jaganjci utihnu i Hannibal te serije Mindhunter. Srž rada jest prikaz odnosa moći između agenata Starling, Grahama, Holdena i Tencha te serijskih ubojica Hannibala Lectera i Edmunda Kempera.

This paper analyses the character of a serial killer in Thomas Harris’s novels on the example of the cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The aim is to shed light on the personal characteristics of serial killers pointing to the conclusion that rather than being born as serial killers, they are made that way due to unfavourable circumstances, such as trauma. However, many serial killers suffer from some sort of psychological disorder and are proclaimed psychopaths or sociopaths, which is why many believe that they are born as killers. The main focus of this paper is the life, personality, modus operandi, and psychology of Hannibal Lecter – a successful psychiatrist who became a cannibal and a serial killer. The trauma Hannibal endures as a child plays a significant role in his psychological development, and it is the source of his cannibalistic tendencies. The paper will also show that the strange attraction that such characters hold over massive audiences arises from their ambiguous identity formed (or perceived) at the intersection of the human and the monstrous.

This essay challenges the myth of Hannibal Lecter, in Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs, as an enigmatic and unclassifiable character. Lecter’s enigma is generated through a largely unexplored process of de-characterization, i.e. by recurrently presenting him through the speech of other characters who describe him as unknowable. After considering Lecter’s case against the background of well-known literary unknowabilities, a deductive phenomenological exploration of Lecter’s de-characterization is carried out with the assistance of tools from the disciplines of personality and social psychology, and supported by empirical evidence from those fields. The demystifying of Lecter’s unreadability does not entail a debasement of the film or the character. On the contrary, Lecter’s de-characterization, albeit a form of narrative manipulation, is viewed as responsible for much of the film’s impact and success. It produces sensitivity-boosting effects; it mediates the indirect characterization of the other characters; and it engages the spectators’ self-image thus contributing importantly to the enjoyment and appreciation of the film.

The thesis will therefore explore the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s Hannibal. By exploring the aesthetical murders and the construction of the Hannibal Lecter character in the light of sociological theory and Nietzschean philosophy, the thesis will show how the fictional aestethical murder and aesthete killer internalize different, sometimes paradoxal, discourses as a cultural manifestation of industrial seriality, Renaissance holistics and fascist/nazi elitism. The thesis willalso show how this manifestation is brought together in a discourse shaped by Friedrich Nietzsches philosophy regarding the will to power, the Übermensch and individualistic self realisation. In this discourse, strengthened by the moral relativism the Hannibal narrative presents, the formation of a Nietzschean antihero can take place, undermining the discourse of violence as pathological behavior presented by the morals of modern society and the clinical psychiatry. The Master's thesis, titled Good and Evil: Psychoanalytical Analysis of Characters from the Novel Red Dragon, deals with a detailed analysis of the four main characters from the mentioned novel, written by Thomas Harris. At the beginning of the dissertation, I present several definitions of good and evil, based on which I place our four characters into these two categories. I focus on the psychoanalytical analysis of the mind, which shows best when analysing evil characters. To properly diagnose them, I resort to several researches and acclaimed authors from the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis, based on which I present the main concepts that are important for this dissertation: psychopathology, sociopathology and psychosis. Towards the end, I also present William Blake’s series of paintings, called: The Red Dragon Paintings. Then, I address the question of why today’s society shows so much interest in the lives and crimes of serial killers. The conclusion reveals my diagnosis of Hannibal Lecter and Francis Dolarhyde. It also shows the answer to previously mentioned question, which in short is that what attracts us most with serial killers is the inability to understand their murderous instincts. Magistrsko delo, ki nosi naslov Dobro in zlo: psihoanalitična analiza likov iz romana Rdeči zmaj, se ukvarja s podrobnejšo analizo štirih literarnih oseb iz omenjenega romana, katerega je napisal Thomas Harris. Začeten del obsega predstavitev pomena dobrega in zla, na podlagi česar smo v nadaljevanju like tudi opredelili. Osredotočili smo se na psihoanalitično analizo uma, katera pride do izraza predvsem pri osebah, ki predstavljajo zlo. Za lažjo postavitev diagnoze oseb na katere smo se osredotočili, smo s pomočjo raziskav in priznanih avtorjev s področij psihologije in psihoanalize predstavili tudi osrednje pojme, ki so ključni za to magistrsko delo, in sicer: psihopatologija, sociopatologija in psihoza. Predstavili smo tudi serijo slik Williama Blake-a, imenovane The Great Red Dragon Series, saj ima ena izmed njih ključno vlogo pri analizi glavnega antagonista. Dotaknili smo se tudi teme oz. vprašanja, zakaj današnja družba kaže tako veliko zanimanje za serijske morilce. Na podlagi predelane literature zaključek razkriva našo ugotovitev o tem, kakšne vrste serijska morilca sta Hannibal in Dolarhyde. Komentirali smo tudi, od kod takšno zanimanje za to vrsto kriminalcev, kjer smo ugotovili, da nas najbolj privlači naša nezmožnost razumevanja njihovih morilskih nagonov.

Pourquoi le personnage de serial killer, et plus précisément Hannibal Lecter, suscite-t-il une telle fascination, notamment auprès des fans présents et actifs sur Facebook? The goal of this dissertation is the study of the character Hannibal Lecter in filmic narratives The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon. To this end, we focus on the character in two ways: the first relates to its construction. We studied the movements of the camera, the camera angles and focus of the camera. Some other elements of film language, such as noise and music were cited when they were very relevant to the composition of the character. The second deals with the dialogue, the science of relations , as formulated by Bakhtin. We seek thus to seize the moments when the characters become aware of their identity. The narrative procedures common to the corpus show the conception of the film world stands on the carnavalization. Through the images carnivalized, we are faced with a topsy-turvy world where the truths and identities are relative. O objetivo desta dissertação é o estudo da personagem Hannibal Lecter nas narrativas fílmicas O Silêncio dos Inocentes, Hannibal e Dragão Vermelho. Para tanto, focalizamos a personagem sob dois aspectos: o primeiro se relaciona com sua construção. Estudamos os movimentos de câmera e os ângulos de focalização da câmera. Alguns outros elementos da linguagem fílmica, como os ruídos e a música, foram citados quando os mesmos eram muito relevantes para a composição da personagem. O segundo trata do dialogismo, da ciência das relações , conforme formulada por Bakhtin. Buscamos, assim, apreender os momentos em que as personagens tomam consciência de sua identidade. Os procedimentos narrativos comuns ao corpus evidenciam que a concepção de mundo dos filmes se sustenta sobre a carnavalização. Por meio das imagens carnavalizadas, estamos diante de um mundo às avessas, onde as verdades e as identidades são relativas.

The paper provides a philosophical analysis of the role of food and eating in Hannibal. In the classical epistemological paradigm of detective fiction knowledge is linked with the sense of sight. This means that knowledge required for solving a detective mystery is objective and intersubjective in its nature. I argue that in order to understand Dr. Lecter’s motives, it is necessary to adopt the different epistemological model whereby valuable information is acquired through the senses of taste and smell. The protagonist displays mastery of the two senses through the use of his culinary skills. This fact explains how Lecter can control over the whole intrigue through the series.
