DNA and proteins fold in three dimensions (3D) to enable functions that sustain life. Emulation of such folding schemes for functional materials can unleash enormous potential in advancing a wide range of technologies, especially in robotics, medicine, and telecommunication. Here, we report a microfolding strategy that enables formation of 3D morphable microelectronic systems integrated with various functional materials, including monocrystalline silicon, metallic nanomembranes, and polymers. By predesigning folding hosts and configuring folding pathways, 3D microelectronic systems in freestanding forms can transform across various complex configurations with modulated functionalities. Nearly all transitional states of 3D microelectronic systems achieved via the microfolding assembly can be easily accessed and modulated in situ, offering functional versatility and adaptability. Advanced morphable microelectronic systems including a reconfigurable microantenna for customizable telecommunication, a 3D vibration sensor for hand-tremor monitoring, and a bloomable robot for cardiac mapping demonstrate broad utility of these assembly schemes to realize advanced functionalities.

Development of aortic aneurysms includes significant morphological changes within the tissue: collagen content increases, elastin content reduces and smooth muscle cells degenerate. We seek to quantify the impact of these changes on the passive mechanical response of aneurysms in the supra-physiological loading range via mechanical testing and constitutive modeling. We perform uniaxial extension tests on circumferentially and axially oriented strips from five thoracic (65.6 years ± 13.4, mean ± SD) and eight abdominal (63.9 years ± 11.4) aortic fusiform aneurysms to investigate both continuous and discontinuous softening during supra-physiological loading. We determine the significance of the differences between the fitted model parameters: diseased thoracic versus abdominal tissues, and healthy (Weisbecker et al., J. Mech. Behav. Biomed. Mater. 12, 93-106, 2012) versus diseased tissues. We also test correlations among these parameters and age, Body Mass Index (BMI) and preoperative aneurysm diameter, and investigate histological cuts. Tissue response is anisotropic for all tests and the anisotropic pseudo-elastic damage model fits the data well for both primary loading and discontinuous softening which we interpret as damage. We found statistically relevant differences between model parameters fitted to diseased thoracic versus abdominal tissues, as well as between those fitted to healthy versus diseased tissues. Experiments on cross-linked actin networks in form of a circular cylinder conducted with a rheometer and parallel-plate geometry resemble a torsional problem of a cylinder undergoing large deformation. A commonly used approximation for the analysis of such experiments is simple shear which is inappropriate for the global analysis of the more complex 3D torsion deformation. We compare the solutions of the torsion of a cylinder with simple shear on the basis of three (phenomenological) rubber models and two network models for cross-linked actin. We start with rubber elasticity and show that the approximation for materials with linear shear elasticity may be reasonable. In the case of cross-linked actin networks, however, the strong strain-stiffening behavior causes higher deviations of simple shear from the more realistic torsional mode. Furthermore, we show that the frequently used eight-chain model cannot account for the correct normal stress behavior of cross-linked actin networks. A recently proposed affine network model reproduces the correct sign for the normal stress for both versions of the boundary conditions. The two solutions, however, differ significantly so that an approximation of the deformation mode in a parallel-plate rheometer by simple shear should be used with caution.

SUMMARY Finite element models reconstructed from medical imaging data, for example, computed tomography or MRI scans, generally represent geometries under in vivo load. Classical finite element approaches start from an unloaded reference configuration. We present a generalized prestressing algorithm based on a concept introduced by Gee et al. (Int. J. Num. Meth. Biomed. Eng. 26:52-72, 2012) in which an incremental update of the displacement field in the classical approach is replaced by an incremental update of the deformation gradient field. Our generalized algorithm can be implemented in existing finite element codes with relatively low implementation effort on the element level and is suitable for material models formulated in the current or initial configurations. Applicable to any finite element simulations started from preloaded geometries, we demonstrate the algorithm and its convergence properties on an academic example and on a segment of a thoracic aorta meshed from MRI data. Furthermore, we present an example to discuss the influence of neglecting prestresses in geometries obtained from medical images, a topic on which conflicting statements are found in the literature. Many treatments for cardiovascular diseases include an endovascular insertion of stents or stent grafts into arteries, a procedure which may cause high tissue stresses and even damage in the arterial wall. In order to study such problems by using finite element methods, both appropriate constitutive models and experimental data on human tissue samples are required. Layer-specific experimental data for human tissue tested up to the supra-physiological loading range are rare in the literature. In this study, intact and layer-separated experimental data from uniaxial extension tests are presented for human thoracic and abdominal aortas with non-atherosclerotic intimal thickening undergoing supra-physiological loading. A novel pseudo-elastic damage model, proposed to describe discontinuous softening in aortic arterial tissues, is fit to the obtained experimental data. Fitting of the model with and without consideration of damage accumulation in the non-collagenous matrix material reveals that tissue damage is primarily related to the collagen fiber fabric. By employing the fit model, the effect of aortic tissue pre-conditioning on the material parameters from the resulting data fits is evaluated. Histological examination of the collagen fibers under different applied stretches is used to gain more insights into the structural changes of the tissue under supra-physiological loading.

Three-dimensional scanning laser vibrometers enable extremely accurate non-contact measurement of the three-dimensional displacements on the surface of structures. This paper looks at the feasibility of using such a scanning laser vibrometer for the non-contact measurement of dynamic strain fields across the surface of a planar structure subjected to in-plane loading. Issues such as laser head alignment and choice of differentiation filter parameters are discussed. Finally, experimental results of two test specimens are presented which clearly demonstrate the significant potential of this new experimental technique as well as highlighting several limitations.

Structurally motivated material models may provide increased insights into the underlying mechanics and physics of arteries under physiological loading conditions. We propose a multiscale model for arterial tissue capturing three different scales (i) a single collagen fibre; (ii) bundle of collagen fibres; and (iii) collagen network within the tissue. The waviness of collagen fibres is introduced by a probability density function for the recruitment stretch at which the fibre starts to bear load. The three-dimensional distribution of the collagen fibres is described by an orientation distribution function using the bivariate von Mises distribution, and fitted to experimental data. The strain energy for the tissue is decomposed additively into a part related to the matrix material and a part for the collagen fibres. Volume fractions account for the matrix/fibre constituents. The proposed model only uses two parameters namely a shear modulus of the matrix material and a (stiffness) parameter related to a single collagen fibre. A fit of the multiscale model to representative experimental data obtained from the individual layers of a human thoracic aorta shows that the proposed model is able to adequately capture the nonlinear and anisotropic behaviour of the aortic layers.

Through progress in medical imaging, image analysis and finite element (FE) meshing tools it is now possible to extract patient-specific geometries from medical images of, e.g., abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), and thus to study clinically relevant problems via FE simulations. Medical imaging is most often performed in vivo, and hence the reconstructed model geometry in the problem of interest will represent the in vivo state, e.g., the AAA at physiological blood pressure. However, classical continuum mechanics and FE methods assume that constitutive models and the corresponding simulations start from an unloaded, stress-free reference condition.

In a previous study we were able to accurately fit experimental data on arterial tissues at supra-physiological loads using a material model that accounts for softening/damage only in the portion of the model associated with the collagen fibers (Weisbecker et al., 2012). Naturally, this result leads to the hypothesis that the softening behavior is related only to the collagen fibers, and not to the matrix material. In this study we test this hypothesis by conducting uniaxial extension tests on elastase and collagenase treated tissues and on untreated control specimens from the media of human thoracic aortas. We relate structural changes in the tissue after enzyme treatment to changes in the corresponding mechanical behavior. Collagenase treated tissue does not exhibit any softening behavior under quasi-static cyclic loading, a result supporting our hypothesis. Conversely, elastase treated tissue exhibits continuous softening under the same loading conditions, indicating that the integrity of the tissue is destroyed upon removal of the elastin. Finally, we fit isotropic and anisotropic constitutive models to the mechanical response of the collagenase treated arterial tissue, while our anisotropic model better approximates the response of collagenase treated arterial tissues, we show that an isotropic matrix model is sufficient to accurately reproduce the mechanical response of untreated control specimens, consistent with current practice in the literature. Catheter based surgical procedures for the treatment of cardiovascular disease such as the placement of stent-grafts can generate high tissue stresses and may cause damage in the arterial wall. To facilitate studies of such problems, we conducted layer-specific uniaxial extension tests under supra-physiological loading on the three tissue layers (intima, media, adventitia) of the human aorta with non-atherosclerotic intimal thickening. We present a pseudo-elastic damage model describing discontinuous softening and a fit to experimental data. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the media, treated with either elastase or collagenase, are investigated.
