Changes in chemical composition and structure of corncob lignocellulosic biomass were investigated relative to pretreatment and anaerobic digestion. The pretreatment involved 1% and 3% sodium hydroxide, 3% and 7% sulphuric acid, as well as medium and high temperature extrusion (in 110 °C and in the range from 140 °C to 160 °C). The chemical components content was studied using a gravimetric method, whereas structure and relations between the carbohydrate and lignin participation were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was determined that the chemical treatment, both acidic and alkaline, changed the chemical composition of corncob more significantly than the extrusion. Alkaline pretreatment contributed to significant delignification, while acidic pretreatment reduced the share of hemicelluloses and increased the proportion of lignin, the so-called “pseudolignin”. The composition of corncob (control and after pre-treatment) was changed after anaerobic digestion, i.e., a decreased carbohydrate substance content and a significantly increased lignin content. FTIR analysis showed changes in their structure. Although the control corncob differed from that processed by various pretreatment methods, the chemical composition of the digested pulp obtained from them was similar. The NaOH pretreatment was judged to be the preferred method for delignification of the raw material.

The purpose of the paper is designation of the changes in the structure of cellulose after the methane fermentation process of Miscanthus and Sorghum harvested during the growing season and afterwards. The percentage and structure of cellulose before and after fermentation were studied. Investigations into changes of the cellulose structure were conducted by the SEC, FT-IR and XRD methods. The average percentage of cellulose after the growing season for Miscanthus varieties was higher and for Sorghum varieties was lower. As a result of the fermentation, the percentage of cellulose for both investigated species harvested in two growth seasons was lower. The degree of polymerisation for the plants harvested after the growing season was lower for the most feedstock. As a result of the fermentation process, the degree of polymerization increased for each of the investigated feedstock. However, crystallinity of cellulose remained at the same level for Miscanthus and decreased for Sorghum. It was shown that changes were different in the cellulose structure of the compared species.

The aim of the research is to identify the changes which occur in lignin from miscanthus and sorghum, one of the main biomass components, as a result of an anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The percentage content and structure of lignin before and after the fermentation process were analysed using biomass harvested in two growing periods&mdash, before and after vegetation. It was shown that plants at different developmental stages differ in lignin content. During plant growth, the lignin structure also changes&mdash, the syringyl-to-guaiacyl ratio (S/G) increases, whereas the aliphatic and aromatic structure ratio (Al/Ar) decreases. The AD process leads to an increase in percentage lignin content in cell walls, and the increase is higher for plants harvested during vegetation. It has been shown in studies that the methane fermentation of miscanthus and sorghum produces waste containing a large amount of lignin, the structure of which is altered relative to native lignin. The quantity and the new, simplified structure of lignin create new possibilities for using this aromatic polymer.

The results of anaerobic digestion (AD) of buttermilk (BM) and cheese whey (CW) with a digested sewage sludge as inoculum is described. The substrate/inoculum mixtures were prepared using 10% buttermilk and 15% cheese whey. The essential parameters of the materials were described, including: total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), pH, conductivity, C/N ratio (the quantitative ratio of organic carbon (C) to nitrogen (N)), alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand (COD). The potential directions of biodegradation of the organic waste types, as used in this study, are also presented. Appropriate chemical reactions illustrate the substrates and products in each phase of anaerobic decomposition of the compounds that are present in buttermilk and cheese whey: lactic acid, lactose, fat, and casein. Moreover, the biogas and biomethane production rates are compared for the substrates used in the experiment. The results have shown that buttermilk in AD generates more biogas (743 m3/Mg VS), including methane (527 m3/Mg VS), when compared with cheese whey (600 m3/Mg VS, 338 m3/Mg VS for biogas and methane, respectively).

The increase in energy demand creates a need to look for new ways of energy production, as fossil fuel resources are limited and nuclear energy is not always well perceived, thus new directions for fuel production are being sought for. One of them is agricultural biogas obtained in the process of methane fermentation, the by-product of which is digested pulp (digestate), having a fertilizing potential, often underestimated. The purpose of the following study is to determine the fertilizer value of digested pulp coming from a Polish biogas plant. The obtained results of digestate chemical analyzes and available information on mineral fertilizers enabled to estimate the value of digestate from the analyzed biogas plant. Based on the adopted methodology, it has been calculated that the value of the analyzed digestate is 24,9 PLN. It should be emphasized, however, that there are more nutrients in the digestate than just the analyzed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and therefore its value increases.

The work aims to examine and discuss the fertilizing properties of digestate (digested pulp) from three different agricultural biogas plants in terms of the substrates used. Based on the market prices of fertilizers, the economic value of the digestate has been assessed. For a selected biogas plant, the economic balance has been calculated, taking into account the income resulting from the sale of the digestate. The results obtained allow for stating that samples of digestate were rich in nitrogen (up to 6.58 g kg−1), and potassium (up to 16.3 g kg−1) in fresh matter (FM). The value of the digestate for installations was estimated in the range of 6.08–15.36 EUR·Mg−1. The analysis for one of the 1 MW biogas plants shows that under current conditions of supporting systems, the daily income for a biogas plant is 1,414 EUR and the digestate produced is worth another 334.4 EUR. Its application, especially on fields adjacent to biogas plants, is part of the principle of nutrient recovery in the circular economy.

In the described study, the relationships between the percentage and structure of selected lignocellulosic components and the efficiency of their anaerobic digestion and the quality of the produced biogas were analyzed. This research included various lignocellulosic raw materials. The biogas efficiency and quality tests were carried out according to DIN standard 38 414-8 (1985) and VDI standard 4630 (2016). Multiple TAPPI standards and the Seifert method were used to determine the chemical composition of the lignocellulose materials. Lignin structure analysis was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Wide-angle X-Ray scattering analysis was used to determine the degree of crystallinity of cellulose. The biogas was positively correlated with C=O and the syringyl to guaiacyl ratio, and negatively correlated with the crystalline structure of cellulose, lignin, cellulose, and extractives. In addition, methane was positively correlated with holocellulose and extractives and negatively correlated with the crystalline structure of cellulose, cellulose, substances soluble in NaOH, and the OH groups. The found independent features accounted for 86.0% of the biogas variability and 68.0% of the methane variability.
