Laminar separation bubbles around airfoils lead to the growth of instability waves, which enhances to acoustic scattering at the trailing-edge, forming a feedback loop that produces to tonal noise. To reduce the trailing-edge tonal noise, an array of roughness elements was used over a NACA0012 airfoil, at low angles of attack and moderate Reynolds number. Aeroacoustics and flow visualization experiments were performed for four configurations: a baseline smooth airfoil, two configurations with roughness elements on either airfoil surface (pressure side or suction side), and a fourth configuration with roughness elements at both airfoil surfaces. The roughness elements are made up of a row of spanwise periodically spaced cylinders, which were placed close to the mid-chord position. It is expected the proposed array of roughness elements stabilizes the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mechanism that is present on the separated shear layer through the induction of streak structures. The separation bubble is assessed using oil flow visualizations, and the cases with roughness elements show the generation of streaks downstream of the array cylinders, disrupting the separation bubble. Acoustic measurements results show a decrease, and in some cases the total suppression, of the tonal noise at Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.6$\times$10$^5$ to 2.5$\times$10$^5$, and angles of attack ranging from 0 to 4 degrees., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

In a combined experimental and numerical effort we investigate airfoil tonal noise generation and reduction. The means of noise control are streak generators in form of cylindrical roughness elements. These elements are placed periodically along the span of airfoil at the mid chord streamwise position. Experiments are performed for a wide range of Reynolds number and angle of attack in a companion work (Alva et al. 2024). In the present work we concentrate on numerical investigations for a further investigation of selected cases. We have performed wall-resolved large-eddy simulations for a NACA 0012 airfoil at zero angle of attack and Mach 0.3. Two Reynolds numbers (80,000 and 100,000) have been investigated, showing acoustic results consistent with experiments at the same Reynolds but lower Mach numbers. Roughness elements attenuate tones in the acoustic field and, for the higher Reynolds number, suppress them. Through Fourier decomposition and spectral POD analysis of streamwise velocity data, dominating structures have been identified. Further, the coupling between structures generated by surface roughness and instability modes (Kelvin-Helmholtz) of shear layer has been identified through stability analysis, suggesting stabilisation mechanisms by which the sound generation by the airfoil is reduced by the roughness elements., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

Modern communication, navigation, and radar systems rely on low noise and frequency-agile microwave sources. In this application space, photonic systems provide an attractive alternative to conventional microwave synthesis by leveraging high spectral purity lasers and optical frequency combs to generate microwaves with exceedingly low phase noise. However, these photonic techniques suffer from a lack of frequency tunability, and also have substantial size, weight, and power requirements that largely limit their use to laboratory settings. In this work, we address these shortcomings with a hybrid opto-electronic approach that combines simplified optical frequency division with direct digital synthesis to produce tunable low-phase-noise microwaves across the entire X-band. This results in exceptional phase noise at 10 GHz of -156 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and fractional frequency instability of 1x10^-13 at 0.1 s. Spot tuning away from 10 GHz by 500 MHz, 1 GHz, and 2 GHz, yields phase noise at 10 kHz offset of -150 dBc/Hz, -146 dBc/Hz, and -140 dBc/Hz, respectively. The synthesizer architecture is fully compatible with integrated photonic implementations that will enable a versatile microwave source in a chip-scale package. Together, these advances illustrate an impactful and practical synthesis technique that shares the combined benefits of low timing noise provided by photonics and the frequency agility of established digital synthesis.

Under action of free-stream turbulence (FST), elongated streamwise streaky structures are generated inside the boundary layer, and their amplitude and wavelength are crucial for the transition onset. While turbulence intensity is strongly correlated with the transitional Reynolds number, characteristic length scales of the FST are often considered to have a slight impact on the transition location. However, a recent experiment by Fransson & Shahinfar (2020} shows significant effects of FST scales. They found that, for higher free-stream turbulence levels and larger integral length scales, an increase in the length scale postpones transition, contrary to established literature. Here, we aim at understanding these results by performing a series of high-fidelity simulations. These results provide understanding why the FST integral length scale affects the transition location differently. These integral length scales are so large that the wide streaks introduced in the boundary layer have substantially lower growth in the laminar region upstream of the transition to turbulence, than streaks induced by smaller integral length scales. The energy in the boundary layer subsequently propagate to smaller spanwise scales as a result of the non-linear interaction. When the energy has reached smaller spanwise scales larger amplitude streaks results in regions where the streak growth are larger. It takes longer for the energy from the wider streaks to propagate to the spanwise scales associated with the breakdown to turbulence, than for the those with smaller spanwise scales. Thus there is a faster transition for FST with lower integral length scales in this case.

Optical frequency division (OFD) has revolutionized microwave and mmWave generation and set spectral purity records owing to its unique capability to transfer high fractional stability from optical to electronic frequencies. Recently, rapid developments in integrated optical reference cavities and microresonator-based optical frequency combs (microcombs) have created a path to transform OFD technology to chip scale. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-low phase noise mmWave oscillator by leveraging integrated photonic components and Kerr optical frequency division. The oscillator derives its stability from an integrated CMOS-compatible SiN coil cavity, and the optical frequency division is achieved spontaneously through Kerr interaction between the injected reference lasers and soliton microcombs in the integrated SiN microresonator. Besides achieving record-low phase noise for integrated mmWave oscillators, our demonstration greatly simplifies the implementation of integrated OFD oscillators and could be useful in applications of Radar, spectroscopy, and astronomy., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Large-eddy simulations of a flat-plate boundary layer, without a leading edge, subject to multiple levels of incoming free stream turbulence are considered in the present work. Within an input-output model where non-linear terms of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are treated as an external forcing, we manage to separate inputs related to perturbations coming through the intake of the numerical domain, whose evolution represents a linear mechanism, and the volumetric non-linear forcing due to triadic interactions. With these, we perform the full reconstruction of the statistics of the flow, as measured in the simulations, to quantify pairs of wavenumbers and frequencies more affected by either linear or non-linear receptivity mechanisms. Inside the boundary layer, different wavenumbers at near-zero frequency reveal streaky structures. Those that are amplified predominantly via linear interactions with the incoming vorticity occur upstream and display transient growth, while those generated by the non-linear forcing are the most energetic and appear in more downstream positions. The latter feature vortices growing proportionally to the laminar boundary layer thickness, along with a velocity profile that agrees with the optimal amplification obtained by linear transient growth theory. The numerical approach presented is general and could potentially be extended to any simulation for which receptivity to incoming perturbations needs to be assessed.

The low-frequency modal and non-modal stability characteristics of an incompressible, pressure-gradient-induced turbulent separation bubble (TSB) are investigated with the objective of studying the mechanism responsible for the low-frequency contraction and expansion (breathing) commonly observed in experimental studies. The configuration of interest is a TSB generated on a flat test surface by a succession of adverse and favourable pressure gradients. The base flow selected for the analysis is the average TSB from the direct numerical simulation of Coleman et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 847, 2018). Global linear stability analysis reveals that the flow is globally stable for wavenumbers. The mode closest to the stability threshold appears to occur at zero frequency and low, non-zero spanwise wavenumber. Resolvent analysis is then employed to examine the forced dynamics of the flow. At low frequency, a region of low, non-zero spanwise wavenumber is also discernible, where the receptivity appears to be driven by the identified weakly damped global mode. The results from resolvent analysis are compared to the unsteady experimental database of Le Floc'h et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 902, 2020) in a similar TSB flow. The alignment between the optimal response and the first spectral proper orthogonal decomposition mode computed from the experiments is shown to exceed 95 %, while the spanwise wavenumber of the optimal response is consistent with that of the low-frequency breathing motion captured experimentally. This indicates that the fluctuations observed experimentally at low frequency closely match the response computed from resolvent analysis. Based on these results, we propose that the forced dynamics of the flow, driven by the weakly damped global mode, serve as a plausible mechanism for the origin of the low-frequency breathing motion commonly observed in experimental studies of TSBs.

This research report explores the role of eye gaze in human-robot interactions and proposes a learning system for detecting objects gazed at by humans using solely visual feedback. The system leverages face detection, human attention prediction, and online object detection, and it allows the robot to perceive and interpret human gaze accurately, paving the way for establishing joint attention with human partners. Additionally, a novel dataset collected with the humanoid robot iCub is introduced, comprising over 22,000 images from ten participants gazing at different annotated objects. This dataset serves as a benchmark for the field of human gaze estimation in table-top human-robot interaction (HRI) contexts. In this work, we use it to evaluate the performance of the proposed pipeline and examine the performance of each component. Furthermore, the developed system is deployed on the iCub, and a supplementary video showcases its functionality. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach as a first step to enhance social awareness and responsiveness in social robotics, as well as improve assistance and support in collaborative scenarios, promoting efficient human-robot collaboration.

Laminar-turbulent transition on a rotating wind turbine blade at a chord Reynolds number of $1 \times 10^5$ and varying angles of attack ($AoA$) is studied with direct numerical simulations and linear stability theory. The rotation effects depend on the streamwise pressure gradient and direct/reverse flow state. In the $AoA=12.8^\circ$ case, rotation retards the flow in the laminar separation bubble (LSB) and renders the mixed Tollmien-Schlichting/Kelvin-Helmholtz (TS/KH) instability more unstable. Rotation fosters an oblique secondary instability mechanism, rapidly breaking the KH rolls into small-scale turbulence. A sub-harmonic mechanism is dominant in the non-rotating case, retarding transition. However, rotation accelerates the boundary layer upstream of separation, subject to a strong adverse pressure gradient (APG), stabilizing TS waves and delaying transition in $3\%$ and reattachment in $4\%$. In the $AoA=4.2^\circ$ and $AoA=1.2^\circ$ cases, rotation decelerates the flow upstream of separation, subject to a favorable pressure gradient (FPG), which makes TS waves more unstable. Nonetheless, rotation accelerates the separated flow, partially stabilizing the KH mechanism. Rotation further promotes the appearance of inflectional crossflow velocity profiles that triggers stationary and traveling crossflow modes. These modes are less unstable than the TS/KH mechanism of the separated shear layer but lead to the formation of coherent spanwise-velocity structures. For $AoA=4.2^\circ$, rotation strengthens the sub-harmonic secondary instability mechanism in the rotating case over the oblique one under no rotation. For $AoA=1.2^\circ$, the sub-harmonic mechanism is dominant regardless of rotation. Notice that the transition location is not changed by rotation in the $AoA=4.2^\circ$ and $AoA=1.2^\circ$ cases. Numerous modern technologies are reliant on the low-phase noise and exquisite timing stability of microwave signals. Substantial progress has been made in the field of microwave photonics, whereby low noise microwave signals are generated by the down-conversion of ultra-stable optical references using a frequency comb. Such systems, however, are constructed with bulk or fiber optics and are difficult to further reduce in size and power consumption. Our work addresses this challenge by leveraging advances in integrated photonics to demonstrate low-noise microwave generation via two-point optical frequency division. Narrow linewidth self-injection locked integrated lasers are stabilized to a miniature Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity, and the frequency gap between the lasers is divided with an efficient dark-soliton frequency comb. The stabilized output of the microcomb is photodetected to produce a microwave signal at 20 GHz with phase noise of -96 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz offset frequency that decreases to -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset--values which are unprecedented for an integrated photonic system. All photonic components can be heterogeneously integrated on a single chip, providing a significant advance for the application of photonics to high-precision navigation, communication and timing systems.

The generation of ultra-low noise microwave and mmWave in miniaturized, chip-based platforms can transform communication, radar, and sensing systems. Optical frequency division that leverages optical references and optical frequency combs has emerged as a powerful technique to generate microwaves with superior spectral purity than any other approaches. We demonstrate a miniaturized optical frequency division system that can potentially transfer the approach to a CMOS-compatible integrated photonic platform. Phase stability is provided by a large-mode-volume, planar-waveguide-based optical reference coil cavity and is divided down from optical to mmWave frequency by using soliton microcombs generated in a waveguide-coupled microresonator. Besides achieving record-low phase noise for integrated photonic microwave/mmWave oscillators, these devices can be heterogeneously integrated with semiconductor lasers, amplifiers, and photodiodes, holding the potential of large-volume, low-cost manufacturing for fundamental and mass-market applications., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures
