Some core designs integrate high-enriched fuel and moderator materials to enhance neutron utilization. This combination results in a broad spectrum within the system, posing challenges in resonance calculation. This paper introduces a general framework to realize resonance self-shielding treatment in broad-spectrum fuel lattice problems. The framework consists of three components. First, a new energy group structure is devised to support resonance calculation in the entire energy range and capture spectral transition and thermalization effects during eigenvalue calculation. Second, the subgroup method based on narrow approximation is selected as a universal method to perform resonance calculation. Finally, transport equations for each fissionable region are solved for neutron flux to collapse the fission spectrum. The proposed method is verified against fast, intermediate, and thermal spectrum pin cell problems and an assembly problem featuring a fast-thermal coupled spectrum. Numerical results affirm the accuracy of the proposed method in handling these scenarios, with eigenvalue errors below 154 pcm for pin cell problems and 106 pcm for the assembly problem. The verification results revealed that the proposed method enables accurate resonance self-shielding treatment for broad-spectrum problems.

Rhizosphere microbial communities are believed to be vital in the adaption of dominant plants to strong waterlogging stress in the water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ). However, limited knowledge is available on their patterns in the WLFZ under distinct waterlogging stresses. Here, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities derived from two typical dominant plants (Rumex acetosa L. and Oxybasis glauca) in the WLFZ of Three Gorges Reservoir, China were analysed through high-throughput sequencing. A total of 63 phyla, 173 classes, 259 orders, 287 families and 518 genera of bacteria, as well as 15 phyla, 50 classes, 124 orders, 265 families and 652 genera of fungi were detected in soils with different waterlogging stress intensities. The most dominant bacterial and fungal phyla in each sample are Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, respectively. Bacteria and fungi in soil may increase their microbial ɑ diversity under the intensity of waterlogging stress to cope with this stress. LEfSe analysis showed that the impact of waterlogging stress on fungal community structure in soil is more prominent than that on bacteria. Key fungal biomarkers can be found in each soil sample, but in many samples, key bacterial biomarkers cannot be found. The metabolic pathways related to aerobic respiration type I and de novo biosynthesis of adenosine ribonucleotides dominate in the microbial community. Redundancy analysis revealed that the structure of rhizosphere microbial communities in different plants is significantly influenced by environmental factors. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the relationship between plants and their second genome (rhizosphere microorganisms) in extreme habitats, such as the WLFZ of large reservoirs.

ABSTRACT Klebsiella pneumoniae is a prominent Gram-negative and encapsulated opportunistic pathogen that causes a multitude of infections such as severe respiratory and healthcare-associated infections. Despite the widespread anti-microbial resistance and the high mortality rate, currently, no clinically vaccine is approved for battling K. pneumoniae. To date, messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine is one of the most advancing technologies and are extensively investigated for viral infection, while infrequently applied for prevention of bacterial infections. In the present study, we aim to construct a new mRNA vaccine encoding YidR or combining with a tissue plasminogen activator signal sequence for preventing K. pneumoniae infection. Adaptive immunity was determined in mRNA vaccines-immunized mice and the protective effects of mRNA vaccines were evaluated in K. pneumoniae infected models. The results showed that lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-YidR-mRNA vaccine was produced with good morphology, high the encapsulation efficiency, and the specific antigen was highly expressed in cells in vitro. In addition, immunization with either LNP-YidR or LNP-YidR-SP elicited a Th1-biased immune response, reduced bacterial load, and provided broad protection in the lung infection models. Importantly, the LNP-YidR-SP mRNA vaccine induced strong adaptive humoral and cellular immunity and increased the survivability of mice compared to the other groups. Our findings serve as a focal point for developing a potential mRNA vaccine against K. pneumoniae, indicating the potential of mRNA vaccines for improving next-generation bacterial vaccine.IMPORTANCEK. pneumoniae is a notorious and clinical bacterium that is evolving in community-acquired and nosocomial settings. This opportunistic pathogen causes severe infectious diseases, including urinary tract infection and pneumonia, and causes a concerning global public burden. Despite efforts having been created to develop different types of K. pneumoniae vaccines, there is no licensed vaccine for preventing K. pneumoniae infection. Therefore, to develop an effective tactic is essential to combat K. pneumoniae-caused diseases. This study provides a novel vaccine strategy against K. pneumoniae and a potent platform to elicit high levels of humoral and cell-meditated immunity.

Three types of 7185+TiB2/TiC aluminum matrix composites with different Zn/Mg ratios were prepared in this work through a water-cooled copper casting process. The effects of Zn/Mg ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 20-mm-thick composites were studied by optical microscopy, electron back scattering diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and tensile mechanical testing. The results showed that the addition of appropriate TiB2/TiC particles refined the as-cast microstructure of the alloy, and with a decrease in Zn/Mg ratio, the grain size distribution became more uniform, the crystalline phase content gradually increased, and the uniformity of the alloy increased. After aging, as the Zn/Mg ratio decreased, the size of the precipitated phase decreased, and the strengthening effect of the alloy improved. The tensile strengths of the surface layer, 1/4 layer, and center position of the A3 alloy were 558, 568, and 572 MPa, respectively. The strength difference among the different thickness layers was the smallest, and the elongation rate was greater than 12%, resulting in the best uniformity.

Therapeutic resistance is a major challenge in clinical cancer theranostics, often leading to treatment failure and increased patient mortality. Breaking this therapeutic deadlock, enhancing the efficacy of clinical treatments, and ultimately improving patient survival rates are both highly desirable and significantly challenging goals. Herein, we have developed a new fluorescent luminogen, QM-DMAC, which features aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and exceptional viscosity-responsive properties. The AIE-active QM-DMAC can specifically stain lysosomes in tumor cells, offering a high signal-to-noise ratio and enabling specific visualization of variations in lysosomal viscosity, such as those induced by inflammation or autophagy. Furthermore, QM-DMAC effectively generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) under white light irradiation, which precisely induces ROS-mediated lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) and lysosome rupture. This ultimately causes severe cell damage and restores the sensitivity of tumor cells to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Thus, QM-DMAC serves as a highly efficient lysosome-targeting photosensitizer and an excellent therapeutic sensitizer. This innovative “lysosome hijacking” strategy significantly maximizes the efficacy of photodynamic therapy, conquering therapeutic resistance and boosting the synergistic therapeutic effect when integrated with conventional radiotherapy or chemotherapy. It provides a novel approach to the design of theranostic agents for clinical cancer theranostics.

Close-distance coal seams are common in underground mining, and their spacing is short, which produces strong mining disturbance. In instances where the upper seam has been mined and a goaf has formed, a notable issue arises during the lower seam’s mining, characterized by substantial deformation of the roadway along the goaf. Field exploration and three-dimensional geological modeling have revealed that the fourth and sixth working faces and pillar of seam No. 5 are all under seam No. 2’s goaf, with an average distance of 16.70 m. Simultaneously, the double compression effect of the pillar, induced by the linkage rotation of key blocks of the lower and upper seams, is analyzed. The induction mechanism and path of the large deformation are expounded. It is thus proposed that the pillar’s width should be determined by gob-side entry, driving beneath the goaf, with the roof near the pillar being cut off in advance to realize the path of cutting off the compressed pillar. Through the simulation comparison of five kinds of pillar width combined with engineering practice, it has been determined that the best width is 8 m, and the abutment pressure is distributed in a double-peak saddle shape, with the result that the load-bearing ability is notably significant. Through the comparative simulation of roof-cutting, it was found that roof-cutting helps the roof to collapse near the pillar-side and decreases the vertical stress peak to 16.46 MPa, the shear stress peak to 5.93 MPa, and the J2 peak to 7.23 × 1013 Pa, which further alleviates the pressure on the pillar. In the field, the haulage roadway’s roof was cut by two-way shaped-charge blasting, and the sandy mudstone (5.90 m) was successfully cut off. Concurrently, anchor cable reinforcement was implemented on the roof and two ribs of the ventilation roadway in proximity to the pillar, thereby ensuring stabilization and mitigating the mining effect. The engineering research provides a case and scheme reference for the operation of gob-side entry driving beneath close-distance goafs worldwide.

The paper comprehensively describes the evolution of metastable microstructures in a cast low-Ta-containing γ-TiAl alloy during cooling-tempering-lamellarization heat treatments. The behavior and mechanism of microstructure refinement are discussed. The rapid cooling generates metastable microstructures, including Widmanstätten, feathery, and massive structures, with many γ variants in small sizes and different orientations. It significantly refines the coarsened colonies and randomizes the texture. The tempering can effectively stabilize the metastable microstructures. During tempering, the γ→α phase transformation is more active at higher temperatures while coarsening and recrystallization dominate at lower temperatures. After tempering, a refined microstructure with spherical grains and convoluted structures forms. Subsequent lamellarization treatment optimizes the microstructure and obtains a fine-grained nearly-lamellar microstructure with small colonies (∼70 μm) and dispersed fine γ grains (∼10 vol%), which yielded a 1.0 % elongation with a 487 MPa yield strength (0.2%) and a 589 MPa ultimate tensile strength at room temperature. Finally, the unique promotion effects and mechanism of a small amount of Ta addition on the nucleation, growth, evolution, and stabilization of metastable microstructures are concluded and discussed, which is crucial for the refinement of cast γ-TiAl alloy by heat treatment alone.

Background and objective As a new technique developed in recent years, bronchoscopic intervention therapy has the advantages of minimal invasion, high safety and repeatability. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics of bronchopleural fistula (BPF) induced by surgeries for lung malignancies or benign diseases and the effect of bronchoscopic intervention therapy for BPF, so as to provide support for prevention and treatment of BPF. Methods Data 64 patients with BPF who were treated by bronchoscopic intervention in Respiratory Disease Center of Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine from June 2020 to September 2023 were collected. Patients with fistula diameter ≤5 mm were underwent submucous injection of macrogol, combined with blocking therapy with N-butyl cyanoacrylate, medical bioprotein glue or silicone prosthesis. Patients with fistula diameter >5 mm were implanted with different stents and cardiac occluders. Locations and characteristics of fistulas were summarized, meanwhile, data including Karnofsky performance status (KPS), shortbreath scale (SS), body temperature, pleural drainage volume and white blood cell count before and after operation were observed. Results For all 64 patients, 96 anatomic lung resections including pneumonectomy, lobectomy and segmentectomy were executed and 74 fistulas occurred in 65 fistula locations. The proportion of fistula in the right lung (63.5%) was significantly higher than that in the left (36.5%). Besides, the right inferior lobar bronchial fistula was the most common (40.5%). Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and highly malignant tumor, which includes the following five pathologic types: pleomorphic carcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, giant cell carcinoma, carcinosarcoma and pulmonary blastoma. The onset of PSC is occult with non-specific clinical symptoms and signs. The clinical manifestations include irritating cough, bloody sputum, dyspnea, chest pain and so on, which are closely related to the growth and invasion site of the tumor. PSC tends to metastasize early, so most patients are already in local advanced stage or advanced stage with a median survival of 9 months at the time of hospital visit. A patient with primary PSC which led to 90% stenosis in central airway was treated by combined method of vascular and tracheoscopic intervention in our respiratory center. This treatment prolonged the patient’s survival time and got a satisfactory effect at 19-month follow-up after surgery. Herein we report the case for clinical reference.

With the large-scale use of power electronic devices, the alternating current side of the system produces decaying direct current components, greatly reducing the performance of the phasor estimation algorithms. To address this problem, this paper presents a phasor estimation algorithm based on sinc interpolation. First, an equivalent cosine model is proposed to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the decaying direct current component. Second, based on the boundary conditions, the optimal frequency band of the equivalent cosine model is determined iteratively to reconstruct the decaying direct current component. Last, the phasor form of the components to be measured is modeled via sinc interpolation, and the phasor parameters are obtained via least squares. In the simulation, the accuracy of the equivalent cosine model is improved by 319.56% compared with that of the traditional method. The proposed algorithm satisfies the accuracy requirement of 1% total vector error in the protection class phasor measurement unit framework.

Given the increasing demand for fruit safety assurance and environmental protection, plant essential oils have gained significant attention as natural alternatives for control of postharvest decay caused by various pathogens. In postharvest management, it is particularly important to effectively control postharvest decay without compromising the quality attributes of fruits. Although oregano essential oil (OEO) has been extensively studied for its antimicrobial properties against various postharvest pathogens, few studies have focused on its interactions with postharvest fruits. In this study, OEO was applied for management of postharvest decay of Pyrus sinkiangensis caused by Penicillium expansum, and its antifungal mechanisms and impacts on the quality attributes of pears were investigated. The OEO exhibited notable inhibitory effects, with determined MIC (0.02%) and MFC (0.04%) against P. expansum, which highlighted its potential as a viable alternative to synthetic fungicides. Our findings revealed that OEO disrupted P. expansum by compromising the integrity of the fungal plasma membrane, as evidenced by changes in plasma membrane permeability and the leakage of cellular components. The OEO treatment significantly reduced weight loss, maintained firmness, and preserved soluble-solid content in the treated pears. In addition, OEO treatment stimulated the intrinsic antioxidant mechanisms of pears, as demonstrated by elevated activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase during storage. This study provides compelling evidence for the antifungal and quality-preserving properties of OEO in the postharvest management of pears, underscoring its potential as an alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling postharvest decay. The elucidation of the interaction between OEO and P. sinkiangensis would greatly enhance our comprehensive understanding of the biological activities of OEO and facilitate its practical application in the postharvest management of pears.

In order to improve the gel properties and flavor quality of silver carp surimi products, frozen silver carp surimi was studied, where the effects of different amounts of taro powder (0, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% (w/w)) on the water-holding capacity, cooking loss rate, whiteness, moisture distribution, gel properties, sensory quality and odor characteristics of silver carp surimi products were mainly investigated. The results showed that as the additive amount of taro powder increased, the water-holding capacity, hardness, chewiness and gel strength of the surimi products were increased first and then decreased, while the cooking loss rate was decreased first and then increased. When the additive amount of taro powder was 0.25%, the water-holding capacity, hardness, chewiness and gel strength of surimi products were all increased to the maximum values of 78.61%, 1815.65±23.47 g, 1446.85±70.28 g and 831.19 g·cm, respectively, while the cooking loss rate was decreased to the minimum value of 13.42%. When the additive amount of taro powder was 0.1%~0.25%, more taro powder was absorbing water and swelled, and filled in the network structure of surimi protein to lock more water, so that the bound water and immobile water in surimi products were increased continuously, and the gel properties of surimi products were enhanced ultimately. However, when the additive amount of taro powder was greater than 0.25%, too much taro powder would hinder the cross-linking of surimi protein, leading to the increase of free water and the gel properties weakening of surimi products. The sensory evaluation and electronic nose analysis showed that the flavor quality of surimi products could be improved when the optimal amount of taro powder was 0.25%. This study provides a theoretical basis for the production of high quality surimi products.

Abstract We have clarified the study area has a history of 65 years and has been restored for 6 years. This study investigated the carbon storage characteristics of undisturbed natural forests and restored mining vegetation in Yunnan Province, China. The goal was to quantify carbon reserves and increments to inform ecological restoration strategies. Four vegetation components (tree, shrub, herb, litter) and five soil layers (0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–60 cm) were analyzed. The effects of Ta alloying on the isothermal oxidation behavior and mechanism of a cast Ti-48Al-3Nb-1.5Ta (at.%) TiAl alloy are investigated. It exhibits excellent oxidation resistance with mass gains of 0.95 and 1.29 mg·cm−2 after 900 °C oxidation for 100/200 h in the air, similar to 8 at.% Nb-containing TiAl alloys. The oxide scale shows a complex multi-layer structure, where the Al2O3 layer and continuous dense nitride layer act as protective layers against diffusion and metal oxidation. The oxidation mechanisms are discussed thermodynamically and kinetically. Compared with Nb, Ta is more significant in inhibiting diffusion and promoting the formation of the protective continuous nitride layer, thus being more effective in improving the oxidation resistance of cast TiAl alloy. Consequently, without considering the influence of microstructure, the oxidation resistance of cast Nb-containing TiAl alloy can be further improved by replacing some Nb with a small amount of Ta. It is supposed to provide new insights into the design of oxidation-resistant TiAl alloys.

Cold treatment has been extensively employed for the phytosanitary control of fruit flies for citrus cultivation worldwide. Trials with artificial infestation methods on navel and Valencia oranges at 3 °C and 2 °C against the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) were conducted, following standard bioassay protocols and large-scale testing. The results showed that the third instar larval stage was the most tolerant stage in both cultivars. The maximum estimated cold treatment time at 3 °C required to produce 99.9968% mortality (LT99.9968) with a 95% confidence level was 16.6 days and 16.2 days for the navel orange and Valencia orange, respectively. Meanwhile, the estimated cold treatment time at 2 °C was 14.8 days for both navel and Valencia oranges, with a 95% confidence level. Furthermore, it was also observed that no survivors came from a total of 104,420 estimated (51,396 for the navel cultivar and 53,024 for the Valencia cultivar) third instar larvae in orange fruits after being subjected to a cold treatment of 3 °C for 17 days. Meanwhile, there were also no survivors from a total of 100,556 (50,740 for the navel cultivar and 49,816 for the Valencia cultivar) third instar larvae in orange fruits after being subjected to a cold treatment of 2 °C for 15 days. The treatments at 3 °C for 17 days and 2 °C for 15 days on oranges, including navel and Valencia, against the oriental fruit fly, surpassed the required mortality assurance of 99.9968% at a 95% confidence level and also met the probit-9 mortality standard. Overall, the application of these results will provide more flexibility for the citrus industry to satisfy quarantine treatment requirements.

Colonization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the lung environments frequently leads to the enrichment of strains displaying enhanced antibiotic resistance and reduced production of quorum-sensing (QS) controlled products. However, the relationship between the emergence of QS deficient variants and antibiotic resistance remains less understood. In this study, 67 P. aeruginosa strains were isolated from the lungs of 14 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, followed by determining their genetic relationship, QS-related phenotypes and resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The integrity of P. aeruginosa QS system was checked by DNA sequencing. The relationship between the QS system and antibiotic resistance was then assessed by correlation analyses. The function of the LasR protein and bacterial virulence were evaluated through homology modeling and nematode-infection assay. The influence of antibiotic on the development of extracellular protease production ability of P. aeruginosa was tested by an evolutionary experiment. The results showed that P. aeruginosa clinical strains displayed abundant diversity in phenotype and genotype. The production of extracellular proteases was significantly negatively correlated with antibiotic resistance. The strains with enhanced antibiotic resistance also showed a notable overlap with the mutation of lasR gene, which is the core regulatory gene of P. aeruginosa QS system. Molecular docking and Caenorhabditis elegans infection assays further suggested that P. aeruginosa with impaired LasR protein could also have varying pathogenicity. Moreover, in vitro evolution experiments demonstrated that antibiotic-mediated selective pressure, particularly from Levofloxacin contributed to the emergence of extracellular protease-negative strains. Therefore, this study provides evidence for the connection of P. aeruginosa QS system and antibiotic resistance, and holds significance for developing targeted strategies to address antibiotic resistance and improving the management of antibiotic-resistant infections in chronic respiratory diseases.

To study the formation mechanism and hydration characteristics of geothermal resources and provide a reference for the comprehensive utilization and development of resources. Collect the water samples from Midi River in Bijie City, Guizhou Province, analyze the hydrochemical characteristics, and adopt the Piper trilinear diagram, geothermal and landmark method and audio magnetotelluric method to study the geothermal hydration and formation mechanism of Midi River. The research indicates: affected by Pingzhai dome structure, the internal joint structure in the dome is very developed in this region, which is conducive to the migration of deep thermal water to the relatively low area in the dome, forming the convective underground thermal water resources of the fold dome structure.Through regional fault detection, it is inferred that there are five shattered fault zones (or fissures) in this region, among which F4 and F13 faults have steep occurrence and shallow downward extension; F9 is more pronounced and tends to be northwest; F1 has a nearly northsouth trend, tends to northwest, and extends deeper; F17 and F18 are more obvious, but the extension is shallow. It is inferred that the F1 fault has good thermal control lability and is a favorable position for underground thermal water upwelling. Heating of the surrounding rock is obtained within 2 500 m depth of runoff after receiving infiltration recharge water from atmospheric precipitation in the rim of Pingzhai dome, and a deep pressure-bearing thermal reservoir is formed in the dolomite of Dengying Formation of Sinian System under the action of overlying Cambrian clastic rock water-resisting and heat-preservation overburden. The analysis of hydrochemical characteristics shows that geothermal water is low-salinity water. Na+ is the main positive ion in geothermal well water, accounting for approximately 45%, followed by Ca2+ and Mg2+, accounting for approximately 49%. HCO3- accounts for the main negative ion, SO42- accounts for 39%, and Cl- accounts for almost no, so the chemical type of geothermal water is HCO3-·SO42--Na·Ca; the geothermal reservoir temperature of the geothermal well is 53.98℃, the geothermal gradient is 2.85℃/100 m, and the circulation depth of the geothermal water is approximately 2 500 m.The research results have a good guiding significance for the exploitation and utilization of geothermal resources in Bijie City, Guizhou Province.

We present MMNeRF, a simple yet powerful learning framework for highly photo-realistic novel view synthesis by learning Multi-modal and Multi-view features to guide neural radiance fields to a generic model. Novel view synthesis has achieved great improvement with the significant success of NeRF-series methods. However, how to make the method generic across scenes has always been a challenging task. A good idea is to introduce 2D image features as prior knowledge for adaptive modeling, yet RGB features lack geometry and 3D spatial information, which causes shape-radiance ambiguity issues and lead to blurry and low-resolution results in the synthesis images. We propose a multi-modal multi-view method to make up for the existing methods. Specifically, we introduce depth features besides RGB features into the model and effectively fuse these multi-modal features by modality-based attention. Furthermore, Our framework innovatively adopts the transformer encoder to fuse multi-view features and uses the transformer decoder to adaptively incorporate the target view with global memory. Extensive experiments are carried out on both categories-specific and category-agnostic benchmarks, and the results demonstrate that our MMNeRF achieves state-of-the-art neural rendering performance.

Finite mixture of linear regression (FMLR) models are among the most exemplary statistical tools to deal with various heterogeneous data. In this paper, we introduce a new procedure to simultaneously determine the number of components and perform variable selection for the different regressions for FMLR models via an exponential power error distribution, which includes normal distributions and Laplace distributions as special cases. Under some regularity conditions, the consistency of order selection and the consistency of variable selection are established, and the asymptotic normality for the estimators of non-zero parameters is investigated. In addition, an efficient modified expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm and a majorization-maximization (MM) algorithm are proposed to implement the proposed optimization problem. Furthermore, we use the numerical simulations to demonstrate the finite sample performance of the proposed methodology. Finally, we apply the proposed approach to analyze a baseball salary data set. Results indicate that our proposed method obtains a smaller BIC value than the existing method.

Abstract Extra‐thick coal seams are widely distributed in the Datong mine area in China. The rapid stopping of mining and the support withdrawal technology for extra‐thick coal seams need to be developed urgently. The reasonable stopping top coal caving distance, main roof's fracture line position, and large section roadway during the stopping period (LSRSP) support method of the header face of 15 m extra‐thick coal seam are systematically studied by using field measurement, experiment, numerical simulation, and similar material simulation methods. With the increase in stopping coal caving distance, the range of the medium and low displacement zone of the LSRSP overburden gradually expands. In contrast, the depth of the plastic zone decreases. The scope and intensity of the high‐stress area of the overlying rock in front gradually decrease and shift from deep to the outside, while the peak stress area shifts from the top coal area to the coal rib of the retracement channel. Comparing the stopping of medium‐thick and thick coal seam working face, the interaction between “main roof−unmined top coal−supports” is analyzed. The unique characteristics of the extra‐thick coal seam working face are derived: when the stopping coal caving distance is shorter than the length of the key block, the dropped coal body cannot effectively restrict the movement of key blocks. Mutual compression and subsidence occur between key blocks, making the broken coal rock block squeeze into the supports. By the simulation study of each index, the stopping coal caving distance of the extra‐thick coal seam is optimal when it is slightly larger than the length of the key block (i.e., the periodic weighting step), simultaneously, the main roof fracture line behind the supports is most favorable for stopping mining. After ensuring the stability of the LSRSP's overburden structure, the differentiated support scheme of “controlled zoning−strength grading” was proposed, and the scheme was modified and verified by simulating the support prestress field. After field practice, the roof of the retracement channel is better controlled in deformation under the joint horizontal and vertical support, the robust control effect of the combined anchor cable is noticeable, the integrity of the polyurethane network is more substantial, and the working face supports have successfully achieved a safe and rapid evacuation.

Abstract Introduction Combined forceps and cryoprobe biopsy during bronchoscopy are increasingly used. However, the adult standard cuffed endotracheal tube (SCETT) is can be limited by general anaesthesia and neuromuscular blockade. An adult uncuffed endotracheal tube (UCETT) might provide simple and safe airway support in stable patients during forceps and cryoprobe biopsy under spontaneous respiration. Methods A retrospective review of stable patients undergoing forceps and cryoprobe biopsy was performed. They were divided into a UCETT group (N = 33) and a SCETT group (N = 27). The primary technical outcome was the successful intubation and completion of bronchoscopy. The primary safety outcome was the incidence of desaturation events. Recovery time and side effects were also recorded. Results UCETTs and SCETTs were successfully inserted, and bronchoscopic procedures were completed in all patients. Only 3/33 (9.1%) patients in the UCETT group exhibited a drop of SPO2

X-ray irradiation and modified atmospheres (MAs) provide eco-friendly, chemical-free methods for pest management. Although a low-oxygen atmospheric treatment improves the performance of some irradiated insects, its influence on the irradiation of quarantine insects and its impacts on pest control efficacy have yet to be investigated. Based on bioassay results, this study employed direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine metabolic profiles of late third-instar B. dorsalis larvae under normoxia (CON, Air), hypoxia (95% N2 + 5% O2, HY), super-hypoxia (99.5% N2 + 0.5% O2, Sup-HY), irradiation-alone (116 Gy, IR-alone), hypoxia + irradiation (HY + IR) and super-hypoxia + irradiation (Sup-HY + IR). Our findings reveal that, compared to the IR-alone group, the IR treatment under HY and Sup-HY (HY + IR and Sup-HY + IR) increases the larval pupation of B. dorsalis, and weakens the delaying effect of IR on the larval developmental stage. However, these 3 groups further hinder adult emergence under the phytosanitary IR dose of 116 Gy. Moreover, all IR-treated groups, including IR-alone, HY + IR, and Sup-HY + IR, lead to insect death as a coarctate larvae or pupae. Pathway analysis identified changed metabolic pathways across treatment groups. Specifically, changes in lipid metabolism-related pathways were observed: 3 in HY vs. CON, 2 in Sup-HY vs. CON, and 5 each in IR-alone vs. CON, HY + IR vs. CON, and Sup-HY + IR vs. CON. The treatments of IR-alone, HY + IR, and Sup-HY + IR induce comparable modifications in metabolic pathways. However, in the HY + IR, and Sup-HY + IR groups, the third-instar larvae of B. dorsalis demonstrate significantly fewer changes. Our research suggests that a low-oxygen environment (HY and Sup-HY) might enhance the radiation tolerance in B. dorsalis larvae by stabilizing lipid metabolism pathways at biologically feasible levels. Additionally, our findings indicate that the current phytosanitary IR dose contributes to the effective management of B. dorsalis, without being influenced by radioprotective effects. These results hold significant importance for understanding the biological effects of radiation on B. dorsalis and for developing IR-specific regulatory guidelines under MA environments.

The investigation into trade-offs among plant functional traits sheds light on how plants strategically balance growth and survival when facing environmental stress. This study sought to evaluate whether trade-offs observed at both community and individual species levels could indicate adaptive fitness across an intensity of flooding intensity. The study was conducted at 25 sampling sites spanning approximately 600 km along the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The findings revealed that, along the flooding gradient, the overall riparian community did not exhibit significant trade-offs between leaf and root traits. Examining three broadly distributed dominant species (Cynodon dactylon, Xanthium strumarium, and Abutilon theophrasti), perennial plants showed pronounced trade-offs under low flooding intensity, while annuals exhibited trade-offs under moderate and low flooding intensity. The trade-offs were evident in traits related to nitrogen-carbon resources, such as specific leaf area, root tissue density, and photosynthetic rate. However, under strong flooding intensity, the relationship between leaf and root traits of the species studied was decoupled. Furthermore, the study identified a significant correlation between soil nitrogen and the trade-off traits under moderate and low flooding intensity. Integrating results from the CSR (Competitors, Stress-tolerators, Ruderals) strategy model, species niche breath analysis, and nitrogen-regulated trade-off, the study revealed that, in the face of high flooding intensity, perennial species (C. dactylon) adopts an S-strategy, demonstrating tolerance through a conservative resource allocation that decouples leaf-root coordination. Annual species (X. strumarium and A. theophrasti), on the other hand, exhibit niche specialization along the flooding gradient, employing distinct strategies (R- and C-strategy). As flooding stress diminishes and soil nitrogen level decreases, plant strategies tend to shift towards an R-strategy with a competition for reduced N resources. In conclusion, the study highlighted the pivotal roles of soil nitrogen and flooding intensity acting as the dual determinants of species growth and tolerance. These dynamics of growth-tolerance balance were evident in the diverse trade-offs between leaf and root traits of individual plant species with different life histories, underscoring the array of adaptive strategies employed by riparian plants across the flooding intensity gradient.

Abstract Long‐lived luminescent materials possess wide application prospects in various areas, but their constructions still face a huge challenge, especially the achievement in solution. Manipulating aggregate is an effective method to attain intriguing luminescence, thus it is expected to build long‐lived materials in solution. In this work, a series of new gold(I) complexes were developed by employing unique carbazole and phosphine as the ligands, and these resulting systems exhibited rare long lifetimes of milliseconds in the aggregate state. It was well unveiled that these complexes emitted blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with the lifetimes of several microseconds in dilute solution; while orange‐red phosphorescence with much longer lifetimes of several milliseconds were achieved in the aggregate state. To our knowledge, this is the first implementation of aggregation‐induced conversion from TADF to phosphorescence. Based on their excellent luminescent properties, we successfully applied these complexes in cell imaging and inhibition of cancer cells.

Restoration of degraded riparian zones is the primary challenge for ensuring the sustainability of watershed ecosystems. An essential aspect of this endeavor is gaining a deep understanding of how riparian plant communities are assembled. The main focus of this study was to investigate how riparian plant communities respond to varying levels of flooding stress along the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China’s Yangtze River. To accomplish this, we calculated the diversity of plant taxonomy, traits and phylogeny, and used a null model to reflect the plant community assembly rules within the riparian zones along the TGR. The riparian zones were divided into four regions based on water regime: the fluctuating backwater area, the permanent backwater area, mainstream and tributaries of the TGR, covering the reservoir area of 1084 km2 with 180 sampling sites surveyed. Our results showed that within the permanent backwater area of the tributaries, the gradient variation in taxonomic and trait diversity of the riparian community was strongly aligned with the varying levels of flooding stress, which suggests that strong environmental selection plays a significant role in this section. Furthermore, through analysis of phylogenetic and trait structures based on the null model, we found that environmental filtering and random processes were the primary mechanisms shaping plant communities in the riparian zones across the entire study area. However, by further examining single traits, we found that seed mass was the sole trait displaying noteworthy divergence in the riparian communities throughout the study area. This finding highlights that seed mass appears as a pivotal divergent trait in the herb succession stage of the riparian communities that is strongly governed by filtering and random processes. In conclusion, we recommend prioritizing seed mass differences in ecological restoration efforts for herb succession in flooding-stressed riparian communities. This approach is crucial for enhancing source utilization, facilitating community assembly, and improving overall recovery outcomes.

The thermal compression tests of Ti–Nb alloy under T = 790–940 °C and ε˙ = 0.001–10s−1 were carried out on the thermal simulation testing machine of Gleeble-3500. The flow stress curves were obtained, and the high-temperature rheological properties of the alloy were analyzed. The 3D activation energy maps were calculated and constructed. The LSSVM model of constitutive relation was established, and the penalty coefficient γ and kernel parameter δ of the LSSVM model were optimized by the genetic algorithm (GA). The constitutive model of the alloy based on the GA-LSSVM algorithm was constructed. The predicted value of the model was also compared with the experimental data. The polar reciprocity model (PRM) and dynamic material model (DMM) were used to establish the 3D processing map of the alloy and appropriate thermal processing parameters. The results indicated that T and ε˙ have a great influence on the flow stress of Ti–Nb alloy. Ti–Nb alloy is a negative temperature-sensitive and a positive strain rate-sensitive material. The correlation coefficient (R) of the GA-LSSVM algorithm constitutive model is 0.9958. The model has high prediction accuracy and strong generalization ability, which provide a new method for establishing a high-temperature constitutive model of materials. The PRM processing map is more accurate in optimizing the processing parameters of Ti–Nb alloy than that of the DMM processing map through analyzing the 3D processing map and observing the microstructure. The instability modes in the instability region of the alloy mainly include local flow. The stability region's predominant deformation mechanism is DRX. The 870–940 °C and 0.001–0.01s−1 are the best parameters during the processing of Ti–Nb alloy.

In this study, Ti-48Al-3Nb-1.5Ta powders were manufactured from cast bars by the supreme-speed plasma rotating electrode process (SS-PREP) and used to prepare hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) material at 1050–1260 °C with 150 MPa for 4 h. The phase, microstructure and mechanical performance were analyzed by XRD, SEM, electrical universal material testing machine and other methods. The results revealed that the phase constitution changed from γ phase to α2 phase and then to γ phase with the material changing from as-cast to powders and then to as-HIPed. Compared with the as-cast material, the grain size and element segregation were significantly reduced for both powders and as-HIPed. When the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) temperature was low, the genetic characteristics of the powder microstructure were evident. With the HIP temperature increasing, the homogeneity of the composition and microstructure increased, and the prior particle boundaries (PPBs) gradually disappeared. The elastic moduli of powder and as-HIPed were superior to those of as-cast, which increased with the HIP temperature increasing. The hardness of as-HIPed was lower than that of the powder. The compressive strength, compressive strain, bending strength, and tensile strength of as-HIPed were higher than those of as-cast. With an increase in the HIP temperature, the compressive strength decreased gradually, and the compressive strain first decreased and then increased.

Abstract B10 cells are regulatory B cells capable of producing IL-10 for maintaining immune homeostasis. Dysregulation of B10 cells occurs in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Modulation or adoptive transfer of B10 cells is a promising therapeutic strategy. The short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), the metabolites of microbiota, play a critical role in maintaining immune homeostasis and are the potential drugs for the modulation of B10 cells. It is not clear whether and how SCFAs upregulate the frequency of B10 cells. Here, we found that SCFAs could promote murine and human B10 cell generation in vitro. Upregulation of B10 cells by butyrate or pentanoate was also observed in either healthy mice, mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis, or mice with collagen-induced arthritis. Moreover, SCFA treatment could ameliorate clinical scores of colitis and arthritis. Adoptive transfer of B cells pretreated with butyrate showed more alleviation of DSS-induced colitis than those without butyrate. A further study demonstrates that SCFAs upregulate B10 cells in a manner dependent on their histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitory activity and independent of the G-protein-coupled receptor pathway. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the MAPK signaling pathway was enriched in B10 cells treated with butyrate. A study with inhibitors of ERK, JNK, and p38 MAPK demonstrated that activating p38 MAPK by butyrate is critical for the upregulation of B10 cells. Moreover, HDAC inhibitor has similar effects on B10 cells. Our study sheds light on the mechanism underlying B10 cell differentiation and function and provides a potential therapeutic strategy with SCFAs and HDAC inhibitors for inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

Abstract Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) as a crucial antioxidant enzyme has drawn attentions for its utilization in preventing cells from oxidative stress responses by efficiently scavenging H2O2 in plants. For eliminating the specific inactivation of natural APXs and regulating the catalytic activity, single‐atom nanozymes are considered as promising classes of alternatives with similar active sites and maximal atomic utilization efficiency to natural APXs. Herein, graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) anchored with isolated single copper atoms (Cu SAs/CN) is designed as an efficient nanozyme with intrinsic APX mimetic behavior. The engineered Cu SAs/CN exhibits comparable specific activity and kinetics to the natural APXs. Based on the density functional theory (DFT), Cu‐N4 moieties in the active center of Cu SAs/CN are determined to exert such favorable APX catalytic performance, in which the electron transfer between Cu and coordinated N atoms facilitates the activation and cleavage of the adsorbed H2O2 molecules and results in fast kinetics. The constructed Cu SAs/CN nanozyme with superior APX‐like performance and high biocompatibility can be applied for effectively protecting the H2O2‐treated cells against oxidative injury in vitro. These findings report the single‐atom nanozymes as a successful paradigm for guiding nanozymes to implement APX mimetic performance for reactive oxygen species‐related biotherapeutic.

The external ventilation conditions have a great influence on the heating performance of the air source heat pump (ASHP) systems. The outdoor units of residential household air source heat pumps are often installed in narrow spaces such as balconies. The ventilation conditions of the outdoor unit will influent the heating performance of the air source heat pump. It is necessary to study the effect of the outdoor unit ventilation conditions on the heating performance of residential household heat pumps. This paper experimentally studied the heating performances of an air source heat pump system with the outdoor unit mounted in a balcony in different external ventilation conditions. The results indicate that the ventilation conditions for the outdoor units have a significant effect on the heating performance of the system. When the inlet of the outdoor unit was close to the sliding door and completely blocked, the ventilation environment was the worst and the coefficient of performance (COP) was the lowest. In addition, the unfavorable ventilation environment could result in a reduction of the COP by 26.2%. When the inlet of the outdoor unit was partially blocked, the heating performance could be improved and the COP was also slightly improved. The great heating performance was obtained under the cross-ventilation condition. This paper can guide the design of the installation position of the household air source heat pump outdoor units in actual engineering.

Due to the uncertainty of object motion, object tracking is a more difficult state estimation problem. The traditional tracking method based on particle filter has come into wide use, but it has high complexity and poor real-time performance in the process of tracking. As long as there are enough training data, the method based on deep neural network can fit any mapping well. In this paper, a structured Long Short-Term Memory Network based on Particle Filter(LSTM-PF) is proposed to learn and model video sequences with high uncertainty. This network draws on the idea of particle filter, which uses a set of weighted particles to approximate the latent variable and updates the latent state distribution through the LSTM gating structure according to Bayesian rules. We conduct a comprehensive experiment on two benchmark datasets: OTB100 and VOT2016. The experimental results show that our tracker has better performance than other trackers, which can effectively reduce the calculation redundancy and improve the tracking accuracy.

The development of dark pro‐aggregation‐induced‐emission luminogens (pro‐AIEgens) based on the solid‐state intramolecular motion–caused quenching effect has been rarely reported in biochemical analysis. Herein, an azo‐conjugated pro‐AIEgen derived from tetraphenylethene is constructed. Due to the active molecular motion of the azo bond, it retains a nonemissive property in both solution and solid forms. The obtained pro‐AIEgen can be internalized by living cells and undergo reductase‐modulated derotation under hypoxia to emit light. It shows increasing fluorescence when the intracellular oxygen concentration becomes lower, making it a potential probe to sense the hypoxic environment. The present probe can also visualize the hypoxic environment created by photodynamic therapy treatment.

According to the development requirements of green mining of coal resources, it is imperative to improve the extraction rate of coal and the application of safe and efficient mining technology. Pre-splitting and roof cutting technology is widely used in reducing residual coal pillars and safe pressure relief mining, which has become the crucial technology for pillar-free mining methods. Therefore, it is essential to review and discuss the research hotspots, cutting-edge methods, principles of action, and application areas of the development of this technology. Above all, the research data on pre-splitting and roof-cutting development in the past ten years are summarized and outlined. The research’s hot spots are pressure relief technology and gob-side entry retaining technology. Then, the functional forms of pre-splitting and roof cutting technology are discussed and compared, including explosive blasting (directional energy gathering blasting, liquid explosive blasting, and composite blasting), hydraulic fracturing, liquid CO2 gas fracturing, and mechanized roof cutting (chain arm saw machine and directional cutting roof rig). Through the analysis of field application cases, the application field is divided into three major areas: non-coal pillar mining (gob-side entry driving with narrow coal pillar, gob-side entry retaining with the filling body, completely gob-side entry retaining, and “N00” construction method), pressure relief at working face (thick and hard main roof cracking and end area hard roof cracking), and pressure relief at roadway (gob-side roadway pressure relief and blasting pressure relief technology for roadways). By detailing the process of each application technology one by one, the principle and mode of pre-splitting in each technology are expounded. Finally, the development prospects of pre-splitting and roof cutting in new technical methods, deep pressure relief mining, intelligent unmanned mining, and green and efficient mining are prospected, providing references for similar projects.

Close-distance coal seams are widely distributed in China, and the mining of overlying coal seams leads to floor damage. To grasp the properties and the fracture spans of the damaged main roof in the underlying coal seam, combining the calculation of the floor damage depth with rock damage theory and the formulas for calculating the first and periodic weighting intervals of the damaged main roof and the instability conditions of the damaged key blocks are obtained. Three interaction stability mechanics models are proposed for key blocks with different properties of the upper and lower main roof, and the instability conditions of the lower damaged key blocks are obtained when the fracture lines overlap. When combined with a specific example, the field monitoring verified the calculation results. The research results are as follows: (1) The first and periodic weighting intervals, horizontal thrust between blocks, and critical load of instability of the damaged main roof are significantly reduced. Still, there are differences in its reduction under different loads, rotation angles, and lumpiness. (2) When the fracture lines of the upper and lower main roofs overlap, the stability of the damaged key blocks is the lowest. There are three linkage stability regions in the critical load curves of the two key blocks. (3) In this case, the damage equivalent of the main roof is 0.397, which belongs to the local damage type. Its first and periodic weighting intervals are 40 m and 16 m, which is 22% and 24% less than when there is no damage. (4) A supporting load of 0.489 MPa is required to maintain the stability of the upper key block, and the lower damaged key block is prone to rotary and sliding instability during the first and periodic weighting, respectively. Thus, the supports need to bear a total of 0.988 MPa and 0.761 MPa to maintain the stability of the two key blocks simultaneously. The ground pressure data monitored on-site is in accord with the calculation results.

The study on the fast-growing traits of trees, mainly valued by tree height (TH) and diameter at breast height (DBH), is of great significance to promote the development of the forest industry. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping based on high-density genetic maps is an efficient approach to identify genetic regions for fast-growing traits. In our study, a high-density genetic map for the F1 population was constructed. The genetic map had a total size of 5,484.07 centimorgan (cM), containing 5,956 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) based on Specific Length Amplified Fragment sequencing. Six fast-growing related stable QTL were identified on six chromosomes, and five stable QTL were identified by a principal component analysis (PCA). By combining the RNA-seq analysis for the two parents and two progenies with the qRT-PCR analysis, four candidate genes, annotated as DnaJ, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase 1 (ACO1), Caffeic acid 3-O-methyltransferase 1 (COMT1), and Dirigent protein 6 (DIR6), that may regulate height growth were identified. Several lignin biosynthesis-related genes that may take part in height growth were detected. In addition, 21 hotspots in this population were found. The results of this study will provide an important foundation for further studies on the molecular and genetic regulation of TH and DBH.

Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) is used to recovery shallow geothermal energy, a widely distributed green energy source. Due to the imbalance between heat rejection and extraction, heat buildup underground is commonly associated with the long-term operation of GCHPs, which undermine system performance. Heat buildup intrinsically results the irreversibilities (entropy production) in subsurface heat sink, in which thermodynamic and transport properties are largely influenced by hydrogeologic properties, especially the existence of fractures and groundwater. This study investigates the influence of water flow in fractures on the thermodynamic performance of a single borehole heat exchanger (BHX) and heat buildup in the underground heat exchange zone (UHXZ). Potential influence factors were screened out, and new terms were proposed to quantify the scale of fractures and available heat and cold in the heat sink. Governing equations were established to calculate the impacts of vertical and horizontal fractures on the heat exchange rate in BHX as well as on the heat flow across the UHXZ. The analysis results show that water flow in fractures can significantly enhance heat transfer, reduce required number of boreholes, mitigate heat buildup and reduce irreversibilities underground. The results also suggest that the role of fracture scales and water velocity in GCHP operation should be carefully evaluated. Therefore, detailed hydrogeological survey is necessary. The study results provide a guide on more accurately evaluating the risk of heat buildup and how to take advantage of hydrogeological characters to improve the performance of GCHPs.

Horizontal ground heat exchangers (HGHEs) have advantages such as convenient construction and low cost; however, their application and popularization are restricted owing to traditional linear HGHEs occupying large space and presenting low total heat transfer capacity. Spiral-coil and slinky-coil HGHEs have been proposed, but currently a comprehensive comparison and evaluation for these types of HGHEs are still needed. In this study, a three-dimensional heat transfer model of the three types of HGHEs for ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) was established. Based on the simulation results, the long-term heat transfer performances were investigated, including the temperature field of surrounding energy-storage soils, outlet working fluid temperature, coefficient of performance (COP) of units, and surplus temperature of the energy-storage soils. A new concept named heat transfer capacity per heat-affected area was proposed in this paper. It is found that the spiral-coil HGHEs have the best performances in terms of working-fluid outlet temperature, unit COP, total heat transfer capacity, heat transfer rate heat-affected area. The linear HGHEs shows the best performances in terms of mitigating heat imbalance risk and heat transfer rate per length. The results provide a reliable basis for selection of HGHE types in engineering practice and improvement guide in the future.

Abstract High‐throughput gene sequencing has identified various genetic variants as the culprits for some common hereditary cancers. However, the heritability of a substantial proportion of cancers remains unexplained, which may result from rare deleterious mutations hidden in a myriad of nonsense genetic variations. This poses a great challenge to the understanding of the pathology and thus the rational design of effective treatments for affected patients. Here, whole genome sequencing is employed in a representative case in which one monozygotic twin is discordant for lung inflammatory myofibroblastoma to disclose rare tumor‐related mutations. A missense single nucleotide variation rs61955126 T>C in the lysine methyltransferase SETD8 (accession: NM_020382, SETD8C302R) is exposed. It is shown that SETD8 is vital for genomic integrity by promoting faithful DNA replication, and its C302R mutation downregulates the p53/p21 pathway. Importantly, the SETD8C302R mutation significantly increases the sensitivity of cancer cells to WEE1 inhibition. Given that WEE1 inhibitors have shown great promise for clinical approval, these results impart a potential therapeutic approach using WEE1 inhibitor for cancer patients carrying the same mutation, and indicate that genome sequencing and genetic functional studies can be integrated into individualized therapies.

Micro rotary structures have attracted increasing attention in many industrial applications. However, the fabrication of complex micro rotary structures with high strength, high hardness, and low rigidity, poses a significant challenge to traditional machining methods. To solve this difficult problem, this study proposes a novel method of fabricating complex micro rotary structures by using wire electrochemical grinding (WECG), which is an anodic dissolution process and has no machining force. WECG, a type of ECM, has some major advantages over wire electrical discharge grinding (WEDG): no electrode wear, absence of residual stress, good surface quality, low machining cost, and high machining efficiency. Firstly, this study investigated the influences of the process parameters on the dimensional accuracy of the micro grooves produced, then optimized these process parameters. A qualitative simulation of WECG was conducted to reveal the reason for the trumpet-like micro grooves fabricated by WECG. Finally, based on the optimal process parameters, several different kinds of rotary structures were successfully produced by WECG. The experimental results demonstrate that WECG is a promising method for fabricating complex rotary structures of difficult-to-cut materials at low cost and with high efficiency.

Academic blogs have become increasingly important as a means of disseminating research and attracting wider non-academic audiences or like-minded peers to new areas of scholarly activity. The heterogeneity and unfamiliarity of the audience means that writers need to present information in perhaps unfamiliar ways, creating interest and encouraging readers to engage with the topics. In this paper, we explore academics’ perceptions of this challenge and particularly how they go about establishing a relationship which will hook and then persuade these new readers. Based on semi-structured interviews with 22 UK academics from a variety of disciplines, we explore the perceptions and practices of writers and how these differ from when they are engaged in writing research papers. We also compare their perceptions with academics who routinely read blogs as part of their scholarly work. The results show key ways in which writers go about interacting with readers and how they seek to draw them into the text through a range of rhetorical devices. We also observe that these rhetorical practices exhibit features of both academic and disciplinary conventions, suggesting that academic blogs are very much an academic genre

Background: Thoracogastric-airway fistula (TGAF) post-thoracic surgery is a rare and challenging complication for esophagectomy. The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of airway stenting for TGAF patients and find related factors coupled with healing of fistula. Methods: This is a retrospective study involving patients with TGAF who were treated with airway stentings. Based on different TGAF locations and sizes on chest computed tomography, covered metallic or silicon airway stents were implanted to cover orifices under interventional bronchoscopy. TGAF healing was defined as the primary outcome, and complete sealing of TGAF as the second outcome. The predictors for TGAF healing were analyzed in univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 58 TGAF patients were included, of whom 7 received straight covered metallic stents, 5 straight silicon stents, 3 L-shaped covered metallic stents, 21 large Y-shaped covered metallic stents, 17 large Y-shaped silicon stents, and 5 with Y-shaped covered metallic stents. Healing was achieved in 20 (34.5%) patients, and complete sealing in 45 (77.6%) patients. There were no significant differences in healing rate and complete sealing rate between patients receiving metallic stents and those with silicon stents. In univariate analysis, lacking a previous history of radiotherapy or chemotherapy, nonmalignant fistulas, small fistulas, and shorter postesophagectomy duration were found associated with a higher rate of TGAF healing. Only shorter postesophagectomy duration was associated with TGAF healing in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Both silicon and covered metallic airway stenting are effective methods to close TGAF. A shorter postesophagectomy period may predict better TGAF healing. The reviews of this paper are available via the supplemental material section.

Background and objective It is very difficult to deal with the comprehensive central airway diseases, especially the malignant airway obstruction. The aim of this study is to explore the clinical effects of multiple interventional bronchoscopies for the treatment of 112 cases with comprehensive malignant central airway diseases so as to evaluate the clinical applications of thermoablation and cryosurgery. Methods The 112 cases with malignant airway diseases retrospectively reviewed for bronchoscopic interventions performed in more than two lesions of carina and/or bifurcation. The age was from 22 to 90 years, which including 55 cases with squamous carcinoma (SQ), 16 adenocarcinoma (AD), 15 adenocystic carcinoma (ACC), 10 metastasis tumor (MT), 8 small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and 8 mixed carcinoma (MC). All bronchoscopic interventions such as argon plasma coagulation (APC), cryosurgery, electronic snare and stenting were performed under rigid bronchoscopy combined with electric bronchoscopy in general anesthesia. Results The 460 bronchoscopic procedures were successfully performed in 112 cases. Cryosurgery and APC were the most used in every group. Stent was more common in patients with MT, balloon dilation was more common in patients with ACC and AD. Electric snare and radioactive seeds implantation were frequently used in cases with SCLC. Trachea stricture is more severe in MT than that in others, while bronchus stricture is more severe than that of trachea in SQ and ACC group. Karnofsky performance score (KPS) is lower and shortness of breath score (SBS) is higher in MC, MT and SCLC group. Trachea and bronchus stricture is improved after comprehensive treatment in 5 groups except of mixed group. KPS increased and SS decreased significantly in 5 groups except of adenocarcinoma. In follow-up, the overall survival time (OS) is 15 months and median survival time is 10 months, especially OS is 28.4 months in ACC and 21.7 months in AD, 8.9 months in SCLC and 7.4 months in mixed group. Conclusion APC combination with Cryosurgery and other bronchoscopic interventions are indicated for the treatment of complex or difficult airway diseases whether they are located in trachea or bronchus. It is a safe and rapid during procedure.

Background and objective Pulmonary sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor in soft tissues. Resection is the preferred option to treat this tumor. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of interventional bronchoscopies in the treatment of pulmonary sarcoma if the patient is inoperable. Methods Sixteen cases with pulmonary sarcoma were retrospectively reviewed in our hospital from November 2008 to July 2014. The mean age was (53.1±5.4) years old. Rigid bronchoscopy was applied for the first procedure with general anesthesia, and electronic bronchoscopy was used for the second procedure or slight patients. Results Sixteen cases, which include 10 sarcomatoid carcinoma, 2 fibrosarcoma, 2 sarcoma, 1 fibromucoid sarcoma, and 1 spindle cell synovial sarcoma, were collected in this study. Eleven cases (68.8%) were peripheral and mainly located in the right upper lobe and left lower lobe. Five cases (31.2%) were central. Of these cases, 82% (9/11) were mixed and primary tumors in pulmonary tumor. Meanwhile, 56% (9/16) were intraluminal and 69% (11/16) were metastatic in central airway. All of the four cases with whole atelectasis were completely relieved through postbronchoscopic interventions. Three of the seven cases with segment atelectasis were completely reopened; two of them were partially relieved; and the remaining two had no response. The obstructive degree, Karnofsky performance status (KPS), and shortness of breathless score improved significantly after the treatment. Conclusion Interventional bronchoscopy could rapidly and efficiently remove endobronchial tumor, relieve airway obstruction, and improve clinical symptoms.

Western Sichuan region has a variety of traditional heating methods and excellent outdoor air quality, and the difference with the city is clear. The indoor air quality of the western Sichuan region is worth studying. The diffusion law of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentration under different heating methods can be explored to provide effective data support for environmental governance. In this context, the indoor air quality under different heating methods in Songpan County was measured with PM2.5 concentration assessment of indoor air quality (IAQ). By analyzing the indoor air quality under different heating modes, the following conclusions can be drawn: the influence degree of indoor activity on indoor particle concentration level depends on the source and characteristics of the house. Air leakage is one of the main reasons for the rise of indoor PM2.5. Heating methods disturb the indoor air, which significantly affects the migration of PM2.5.

The hot compression tests of Ti-12Mo-4Zr-5Sn alloy were tested on the thermo-mechanical simulator of Gleeble-3500 under isothermal and constant strain rate. We studied this alloy’s behavior during thermal deformation at the conditions of T = 670~820 °C, ε ˙ = 0.001~10 s−1, and deformation degree 70%. The rheological stress curves of the alloy were modified, the characteristics of the rheological stress curves were analyzed, and the activation energy map of hot deformation was established. A physical constitutive model of the alloy based on strain compensation was established, which has taken the relationship between Young’s modulus and self-diffusion coefficient and temperature into account. Moreover, the intrinsic hot workability ξ map of the alloy was established based on the polar reciprocity model. The results show that this alloy’s rheological stress will descend when the temperature of deformation rises and grow when the strain rate increases, and has negative sensitivity of temperature and positive sensitivity of strain rate. According to the error calculation, the physical constitutive model’s correlation coefficient is 0.9910 and the average relative error is 3.97%, which has good accuracy. Through the analysis of the microstructures of the instability zone and the stability zone, it was found that the instability mode of the instability zone was dominated by the local flow, and the deformation mechanism of the stability zone was dominated by the dynamic recrystallization. The optimum processing parameters of the alloy known from ξ map and metallographic structure are the following: T = 790~820 °C and ε ˙ = 0.001~0.01 s−1.

Impure salt rock strata are extensively distributed in China, giving them great significance in the study of the physical properties of impure salt rock for the construction of underground gas storage in salt mines. To investigate the confining pressure and impurity effects on the mechanical properties and gas permeability characteristics of salt rock, permeability tests under hydrostatic confining pressure and conventional triaxial compression (CTC), on salt rock samples with different impurity contents, were carried out. The results demonstrate that the confining pressure effects cause an increase in triaxial compression strength, but a decrease in permeability. However, impurity enhances the bearing capacity and permeability of the salt rock; both rock strength and permeability increase with an increase in impurity content. Moreover, the broken salt rock specimens were analyzed after the CTC test using Computed Tomography (CT) equipment. To understand the relationships between pore volume and permeability, considering the confining pressure and impurity effects, the cracks were divided into four groups according to different crack diameter ranges: ~0.05 mm, 0.05−1 mm, 1−10 mm and ~10 mm. The CT analysis results show that while the pore volume of smaller cracks shows an “increasing−decreasing” trend by increasing confining pressure, the pore volume of large cracks gradually decreases, indicating that the rock permeability is highly related to macro-cracks. However, impurity has more complicated implications on rock permeability and cracks, and needs further investigation.

The instability of machining process caused by the difficulty of the electrolyte refresh in electrochemical micromachining (EMM) of micro through-hole has been an unsolved problem. Thus, this paper investigates the electrochemical micromachining of micro through-hole by using a micro helical electrode combining with the jetting electrolyte. With the help of high-speed rotation of micro helical electrode and its spiral shape, the internal electrolyte can be stirred while the external jetting electrolyte can flow into the hole along the spiral groove to refresh the electrolyte effectively, thereby, improving the machining stability of EMM. Firstly, the influence of the process parameters on the fabrication of micro through-hole in the EMM by using micro helical electrode without non-conductive mask is investigated. Based on the optimization of the process parameters, a micro through-hole with an inlet dimension of 121.6 μm and an outlet dimension of 114.9 μm is obtained successfully. Furthermore, this paper also tries to use the micro helical electrode coated with the non-conductive mask to decrease the bad influence of the stray corrosion attack. It is found that the non-conductive mask coated on the surface of micro helical electrode can improve the machining accuracy significantly under the condition of low pulse frequency (≤1 KHz). However, its good effect on preventing the stray corrosion decreases along with the increase of the pulse frequency.

Background and objective To observe the clinical effects and safety of endobronchial electrocautery snare combined with CO2 cryosurgery for the treatment of tracheobronchial obstructive lesions. Materials and methods Seventy-seven patients with airway tumor or granuloma were retrospectively reviewed, including 70 malignant airway obstruction and 7 benign airway lesions, for the treatment of endobronchial electrocautery snare plus CO2 cryosurgery and argon plasma coagulation (APC). Results Eighty-five endobronchial snares were performed in 77 cases. 42.9% of the obstructive lesions were located in right bronchial orifice, 38.3% in main trachea 21.4% in left bronchial orifice. 89.7% of the malignant tumor was mixed type of lesions (endobronchial plus bronchial or external bronchial), only 10.3% was endobronchial. Background and objective The locations of mediastinal malignant tumor lesions are deep and occult, and are close to the pericardium, trachea, or major vessels. Therefore, the possibility of surgical resection is slim, and cryoablation and thermal ablation are restricted. In current study, image and life quality data were compared before and after 125I seeding therapy to investigate its safety and clinical effects. Methods From July 2010 to July 2011, a 43-patient follow-up of pathologically confirmed cancers, including 21 cases of primary mediastinal squamous lung cancer, 9 cases of primary esophagus cancer, and 13 cases of lymph node metastases were completed. Among these, 18 cases presented with tracheal stenosis >50%, 9 cases had esophageal obstruction, and 9 cases had superior vena cava reflux disorder. Each lesion was implanted with 10 to 60 pieces of 125I particles, with an average of 30.79±14.23. CT data at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months after therapy were obtained to evaluate the local lesion outcome. The quality of life of the patients as well as survival data was also recorded. Results The overall success rate of the operation was 100%. The longest time of follow-up was 12 months. At 6 months, 37 patients were alive, and the half-year survival rate was 85.0%. In terms of local lesions, 30 cases of PR and 7 cases of NC were found. The clinical effective rate was 81.08%, and the clinical beneficial rate was 100%. At 12 months after therapy, 31 patients were alive, and the one-year survival rate was 60.5%. In terms of local lesions, 16 cases of CR, 7 cases of PR, 2 cases of NC, and 6 cases of PD were found. The clinical effective rate was 74.19%, and the clinical beneficial rate was 80.65%. The KPS score increased after the treatment (P=0.000). Three cases of pneumothorax presented after treatment, and no severe complications, such as vessel, trachea, recurrent laryngeal nerve, or pericardiocentesis injuries, were found. Conclusion Radiation seed implantation in mediastinal malignant tumors is a relatively safe technique with high success rate, considerable efficacy, and clear clinical value in advanced cancer treatment.
