Abstract Lead selenide (PbSe) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are suitable for the development of the next-generation of photovoltaics (PVs) because of efficient multiple-exciton generation and strong charge coupling ability. To date, the reported high-efficient PbSe CQD PVs use spin-coated zinc oxide (ZnO) as the electron transport layer (ETL). However, it is found that the surface defects of ZnO present a difficulty in completion of passivation, and this impedes the continuous progress of devices. To address this disadvantage, fluoride (F) anions are employed for the surface passivation of ZnO through a chemical bath deposition method (CBD). The F-passivated ZnO ETL possesses decreased densities of oxygen vacancy and a favorable band alignment. Benefiting from these improvements, PbSe CQD PVs report an efficiency of 10.04%, comparatively 9.4% higher than that of devices using sol-gel (SG) ZnO as ETL. We are optimistic that this interface passivation strategy has great potential in the development of solution-processed CQD optoelectronic devices. Graphical Abstract

Abstract To enhance the efficiency of catalysis, it is crucial to comprehend the behavior of individual nanowires/nanosheets. A developed on-chip microcell facilitates this study by creating a reaction window that exposes the catalyst region of interest. However, this technology’s potential application is limited due to frequently-observed variations in data between different cells. In this study, we identify a conductance problem in the reaction windows of non-metallic catalysts as the cause of this issue. We investigate this problem using in-situ electronic/electrochemical measurements and atom-thin nanosheets as model catalysts. Our findings show that a full-open window, which exposes the entire catalyst channel, allows for efficient modulation of conductance, which is ten times higher than a half-open window. This often-overlooked factor has the potential to significantly improve the conductivity of non-metallic catalysts during the reaction process. After examining tens of cells, we develop a vertical microcell strategy to eliminate the conductance issue and enhance measurement reproducibility. Our study offers guidelines for conducting reliable microcell measurements on non-metallic single nanowire/nanosheet catalysts.

Abstract Small single-stranded DNA phages of the Microviridae family are diverse and prevalent in oceans. Our understanding of Microviridae phages that infect the ecologically important marine Roseobacter is currently limited, comprising few isolates. Here, we report six roseophages that infect Roseobacter RCA strains. Genomic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that they were new members of the previously identified subfamily Occultatumvirinae. Additionally, 232 marine uncultivated virus genomes (UViGs) affiliated to Occultatumvirinae were obtained from environmental genome datasets. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that marine Occultatumvirinae phages could be further grouped into 11 subgroups. Moreover, meta-omics based read-mapping analysis showed that Occultatumvirinae phages were globally distributed, with two low G + C subgroups showing the most prevalent distribution. Furthermore, one phage in subgroup 2 was found to be extremely ubiquitous. Overall, this study expands our understanding of the diversity and ecology of the Occultatumvirinae microviruses in the ocean and highlights their ecological impacts.

Abstract Melanoma is one of the most prevalent skin cancers, with high metastatic rates and poor prognosis. Understanding its molecular pathogenesis is crucial for improving its diagnosis and treatment. Integrated analysis of multi-omics data from 207 treatment-naïve melanomas (primary-cutaneous-melanomas (CM, n = 28), primary-acral-melanomas (AM, n = 81), primary-mucosal-melanomas (MM, n = 28), metastatic-melanomas (n = 27), and nevi (n = 43)) provides insights into melanoma biology. Multivariate analysis reveals that PRKDC amplification is a prognostic molecule for melanomas. Further proteogenomic analysis combined with functional experiments reveals that the cis-effect of PRKDC amplification may lead to tumor proliferation through the activation of DNA repair and folate metabolism pathways. Proteome-based stratification of primary melanomas defines three prognosis-related subtypes, namely, the ECM subtype, angiogenesis subtype (with a high metastasis rate), and cell proliferation subtype, which provides an essential framework for the utilization of specific targeted therapies for particular melanoma subtypes. The immune classification identifies three immune subtypes. Further analysis combined with an independent anti-PD-1 treatment cohort reveals that upregulation of the MAPK7-NFKB signaling pathway may facilitate T-cell recruitment and increase the sensitivity of patients to immunotherapy. In contrast, PRKDC may reduce the sensitivity of melanoma patients to immunotherapy by promoting DNA repair in melanoma cells. These results emphasize the clinical value of multi-omics data and have the potential to improve the understanding of melanoma treatment.

Abstract Kumquat pomace non‐extractable polyphenols (KNEP), which contains celobiotics and has anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant effects, are one of the main components in kumquats. We aimed to determine the preventive and inhibitory effects of KNEP on dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)‐induced inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The disease activity index (DAI) score, H&E staining, high‐throughput sequencing technology, quantitative analysis, ELISA, and western blotting were used to explore the effect of KNEP in an IBD mouse model. The DAI score and H&E staining results showed that compared with the DSS treatment group, the DAI and pathological status of IBD in the DSS + 3% KNEP (low‐dose) and DSS + 6% KNEP (high‐dose) intervention groups were significantly improved. High‐throughput sequencing showed that the composition of the intestinal flora was restored under KNEP, and the abundance of pathogenic bacteria decreased and that of beneficial bacteria increased. Quantitative analysis of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) showed that the SCFAs content in the cecum of IBD mice increased in a dose‐dependent manner. ELISA results showed that KNEP at different doses could inhibit the expression of TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IFN‐γ, and other inflammatory factors, and that 6% KNEP had the most potent inhibitory effect. Western blotting results showed that KNEP inhibited the expression of TLR4, NF‐κB, and NLRP3 in the colon of mice with DSS‐induced colitis in a dose‐dependent manner. These results indicate that KNEP can significantly improve DSS‐induced acute colitis in mice, and the higher the KNEP content, the more pronounced the improvement in IBD.

The recent proliferation of Fifth-Generation (5G) networks and Sixth-Generation (6G) networks has given rise to Vehicular Crowd Sensing (VCS) systems which solve parking collisions by effectively incentivizing vehicle participation. However, instead of being an isolated module, the incentive mechanism usually interacts with other modules. Based on this, we capture this synergy and propose a Collision-free Parking Recommendation (CPR), a novel VCS system framework that integrates an incentive mechanism, a non-cooperative VCS game, and a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm, to derive an optimal parking strategy in real time. Specifically, we utilize an LSTM method to predict parking areas roughly for recommendations accurately. Its incentive mechanism is designed to motivate vehicle participation by considering dynamically priced parking tasks and social network effects. In order to cope with stochastic parking collisions, its non-cooperative VCS game further analyzes the uncertain interactions between vehicles in parking decision-making. Then its multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm models the VCS campaign as a multi-agent Markov decision process that not only derives the optimal collision-free parking strategy for each vehicle independently, but also proves that the optimal parking strategy for each vehicle is Pareto-optimal. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that CPR can accomplish parking tasks at a 99.7% accuracy compared with other baselines, efficiently recommending parking spaces.

Emulsion gels mimic the rheological properties of solid and semi-solid fats, offering a viable solution to replace conventional fats in low-fat food formulations. In this study, gel emulsions stabilized with stigmasterol (ST) and polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) complexes were prepared. Initially, we examined the effect of the ST/PGPR complex on the mechanism of gel emulsion stabilization. Our findings revealed that the gel emulsion formulated with 3% PGPR and ST exhibited a robust structure, effectively stabilizing the entire system and ensuring uniform distribution, and increasing ST concentration led to greater stability of the gel emulsion system. Stability assessments demonstrated that gel emulsions containing 3% PGPR and varying ST concentrations exhibited remarkable thermal stability and effectively delayed oil oxidation. These results underscore the high stability of gel emulsions stabilized with the ST/PGPR complex, highlighting their potential as a margarine substitute.

The ultrasound-assisted extraction technique was used for extracting polysaccharides of Tricholoma matsutake (PTM) in this work. The effects of different parameters, i.e., solid-to-liquid ratio, ultrasonic power, extraction time, and extraction temperature on the PTM yield were optimized using a rotatable, orthogonal central composite design. In the derived optimal conditions, the PTM yield was 16.97 ± 0.06%, which corresponded well with the regression model predicted value of 16.85%. The extracted PTM was purified, and the structural characteristics and antioxidant activities were investigated. The PTM was found to be composed mainly of fructose, mannose, glucose, and galactose with a molar molecular ratio of 1:2.25:9.35:5, and an average molecular weight of 90,100 Da. High antioxidant effects of PTM were seen in the tests of DPPH, hydroxyl, and ABTS radical scavenging, along with a moderate superoxide radical scavenging rate.

To address the challenges of multiple design variables, long evaluation times, and poor global search capability of traditional surrogate-assisted algorithms that rely on the complete substitution of accurate function evaluations in the turbine aerodynamic optimization process, a pre-screening surrogate-assisted elitist preservation genetic algorithm (pre-SAEGA) optimizer is proposed. Pre-screening strategy in the pre-SAEGA can screen samples instead of directly estimating them, thereby reducing expensive evaluations in each generation. The directly manipulated free-form deformation (DFFD) method is applied to parameterized multi-stage axial turbines, and multi-degree-of-freedom flexible control is realized. Combining the pre-SAEGA with the DFFD method, a data-driven multi-stage axial turbine optimization platform is established. A two-stage axial turbine is the research object, and 44 design variables are selected for the combined optimization design of flow path and blade rows. The results show that the isentropic efficiency and flow rate improve by 1.33 % and 1.81 % respectively, and the pressure ratio decreases by 0.47 % at the turbine design point. The presented optimization platform not only improves the aerodynamic optimization effect but also significantly reduces the number of design variables and real evaluation samples, making it suitable for solving multi-stage turbine optimization problems with multiple degrees of freedom.

Medicago ruthenica is a promising leguminous forage crop due to its lack of saponins, which prevents bloat in livestock from excessive consumption. Legume/grass mixed cropping is an effective forage planting method widely used in agricultural and pastoral regions. However, there is a lack of research on using legume-grass mixed cropping to establish perennial, high-yield, and high-quality cultivated grasslands in the Longxi Loess Plateau. This study conducted a legume/grass intercropping experiment in the Longxi Loess Plateau region of northwestern China, using Medicago ruthenica and Bromus inermis. Experimental plots were established in 2021, with field sampling and laboratory analysis starting in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The research aimed to investigate the effects of intercropping Medicago ruthenica with Bromus inermis on forage yield and quality, and to determine the optimal intercropping ratios. The experiment tested various intercropping ratios of Medicago ruthenica and Bromus inermis in the fall (2:8, 3:7, 4:6, 5:5, 6:4, 7:3, 8:2), with sole crops of each species serving as controls. Results showed that, in the second and third years of mixed cropping, the forage yield under mixed cropping treatments was significantly higher than that of Medicago ruthenica and Bromus inermis monoculture, with increases of 40.89–70.88% and 13.97–38.22% in the second year, and 131.91–199.13% and 44.06–85.82% in the third year. When the legume proportion in the mixed cropping system was around 30%, competition between the two forages reached equilibrium, demonstrating the benefits of mixed cropping. The crude protein and ether extract content of mixed forage were significantly higher than those of monoculture, while the neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents were significantly lower, indicating a higher feeding value for the mixed forage. The legume proportion was a key factor influencing the yield of mixed forage. In conclusion, a mixed planting ratio of Medicago ruthenica and Bromus inermis at 3:7 resulted in higher yield and nutritional quality, making it an optimal ratio for establishing cultivated forage fields in the Longxi Loess Plateau.

Abstract Background Elevated evidence suggests that the SENPs family plays an important role in tumor progression. However, the role of SENPs in AML remains unclear. Methods We evaluated the expression pattern of SENP1 based on RNA sequencing data obtained from OHSU, TCGA, TARGET, and MILE datasets. Clinical samples were used to verify the expression of SENP1 in the AML cells. Lentiviral vectors shRNA and sgRNA were used to intervene in SENP1 expression in AML cells, and the effects of SENP1 on AML proliferation and anti-apoptosis were detected using in vitro and in vivo models. Chip-qPCR, MERIP-qPCR, CO-IP, RNA pulldown, and dual-luciferase reporter gene assays were used to explore the regulatory mechanisms of SNEP1 in AML. Results SENP1 was significantly upregulated in high-risk AML patients and closely related to poor prognosis. The AKT/mTOR signaling pathway is a key downstream pathway that mediates SENP1's regulation of AML proliferation and anti-apoptosis. Mechanistically, the CO-IP assay revealed binding between SENP1 and HDAC2. SUMO and Chip-qPCR assays suggested that SENP1 can desumoylate HDAC2, which enhances EGFR transcription and activates the AKT pathway. In addition, we found that IGF2BP3 expression was upregulated in high-risk AML patients and was positively correlated with SENP1 expression. MERIP-qPCR and RIP-qPCR showed that IGF2BP3 binds SENP1 3-UTR in an m6A manner, enhances SENP1 expression, and promotes AKT pathway conduction. Conclusions Our findings reveal a distinct mechanism of SENP1-mediated HDAC2-AKT activation and establish the critical role of the IGF2BP3/SENP1signaling axis in AML development.

Acting as a central hub in regulating brain functions, the thalamus plays a pivotal role in controlling high-order brain functions. Considering the impact of preterm birth on infant brain development, traditional studies focused on the overall development of thalamus other than its subregions. In this study, we compared the volumetric growth and shape development of the thalamic hemispheres between the infants born preterm and full-term (Left volume: P = 0.027, Left normalized volume: P < 0.0001; Right volume: P = 0.070, Right normalized volume: P < 0.0001). The ventral nucleus region, dorsomedial nucleus region, and posterior nucleus region of the thalamus exhibit higher vulnerability to alterations induced by preterm birth. The structural covariance (SC) between the thickness of thalamus and insula in preterm infants (Left: corrected P = 0.0091, Right: corrected P = 0.0119) showed significant increase as compared to full-term controls. Current findings suggest that preterm birth affects the development of the thalamus and has differential effects on its subregions. The ventral nucleus region, dorsomedial nucleus region, and posterior nucleus region of the thalamus are more susceptible to the impacts of preterm birth.

BackgroundHigh BMI (Body Mass Index) is a significant factor impacting health, with a clear link to an increased risk of leukemia. Research on this topic is limited. Understanding the epidemiological trends of leukemia attributable to high BMI risk is crucial for disease prevention and patient support.MethodsWe obtained the data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, analyzing the ASR (age-standardized rates), including ASDR (age-standardized death rate) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate, and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) by gender, age, country, and region from 1990 to 2019.ResultsIn 2019, deaths and DALYs have significantly increased to 21.73 thousand and 584.09 thousand. The global age-standardized death and DALYs rates have slightly increased over the past 30 years (EAPCs: 0.34 and 0.29). Among four common leukemia subtypes, only CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) exhibited a significant decrease in ASDR and age-standardized DALYs rate, with EAPC of -1.74 and -1.52. AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) showed the most pronounced upward trend in ASDR, with an EAPC of 1.34. These trends vary by gender, age, region, and national economic status. Older people have been at a significantly greater risk. Females globally have borne a higher burden. While males have shown an increasing trend. The regions experiencing the greatest growth in ASR were South Asia. The countries with the largest increases were Equatorial Guinea. However, It is worth noting that there may be variations among specific subtypes of leukemia. Regions with high Socio-demographic Index (SDI) have had the highest ASR, while low-middle SDI regions have shown the greatest increase in these rates. All ASRs values have been positively correlated with SDI, but there has been a turning point in medium to high SDI regions.ConclusionsLeukemia attributable to high BMI risk is gradually becoming a heavier burden globally. Different subtypes of leukemia have distinct temporal and regional patterns. This study’s findings will provide information for analyzing the worldwide disease burden patterns and serve as a basis for disease prevention, developing suitable strategies for the modifiable risk factor.

The component analysis of raw meal is critical to the quality of cement. In recent years, near-infrared (NIR) has been emerged as an innovative and efficient analytical method to determine the oxide content of cement raw meal. This study aims to utilize NIR spectroscopy combined with machine learning and chemometrics to improve the prediction of oxide content in cement raw meal. The Savitzky-Golay convolution smoothing method is applied to eliminate noise interference for the analysis of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), silicon dioxide (SiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and ferric oxide (Fe2O3) in cement raw materials. Different wavelength selection techniques are used to perform a comprehensive analysis of the model, comparing the performance of several wavelength selection techniques. The back-propagation neural network regression model based on particle swarm optimization algorithm was also applied to optimize the extracted and screened feature wavelengths, and the model prediction performance was checked and evaluated using Rp and RMSE. In conclusion, the results indicate that NIR spectroscopy in combination with ML and chemometrics has great potential to effectively improve the prediction performance of oxide content in raw materials and highlight the importance of modeling and wavelength selection techniques. By enabling more accurate and efficient determination of oxide content in raw materials, NIR spectroscopy coupled with meta-modeling has the potential to revolutionize quality assurance practices in cement manufacturing.

The present study aimed to modify the structure of ginger peel polysaccharides (GPPs) with Cr (III) and to evaluate the in vivo anti-inflammatory activities of the GPPs and GPP-Cr (III) complexes and their underlying mechanisms. The response surface methodology optimized the preparation process to a GPPs-Cr (III) mass ratio of 1:0.06, a temperature of 60 °C, and a pH of 6.8, with the greatest chelation rate of 91.1%. The modification of Cr (III) increased the molecular weight and altered the glucose proportion of the GPPs, through targeting the O–H of hydroxyl groups and affecting the C–O/O–C–O structures. The GPP-Cr (III) complexes had a similar crystallinity and conformation to the parent polysaccharides, but were more thermally stable than the GPPs (in the region of < 130 °C and > 332 °C). In CuSO4-induced inflammation in zebrafish, the GPP-Cr (III) complexes (dose: 50 and 100 μg/mL) showed significantly stronger anti-inflammatory activity than the GPPs did via down-regulating the expression of relevant transcription factors and cytokines in the MyD88/NF-κB/MAPK/iNOS signaling pathway. Therefore, GPP-Cr (III) complexes might be promising dietary formulations with anti-inflammatory effects, Cr (III) supplements, or functional food components, which substantially facilitated the high-value utilization of ginger peel by-products.

Abstract Soft tissue sarcoma is a broad family of mesenchymal malignancies exhibiting remarkable histological diversity. We portray the proteomic landscape of 272 soft tissue sarcomas representing 12 major subtypes. Hierarchical classification finds the similarity of proteomic features between angiosarcoma and epithelial sarcoma, and elevated expression of SHC1 in AS and ES is correlated with poor prognosis. Moreover, proteomic clustering classifies patients of soft tissue sarcoma into 3 proteomic clusters with diverse driven pathways and clinical outcomes. In the proteomic cluster featured with the high cell proliferation rate, APEX1 and NPM1 are found to promote cell proliferation and drive the progression of cancer cells. The classification based on immune signatures defines three immune subtypes with distinctive tumor microenvironments. Further analysis illustrates the potential association between immune evasion markers (PD-L1 and CD80) and tumor metastasis in soft tissue sarcoma. Overall, this analysis uncovers sarcoma-type-specific changes in proteins, providing insights about relationships of soft tissue sarcoma.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), categorized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are difficult to degrade, exhibiting reproductive toxicity and carcinogenicity. Exposure to dust and soil particles containing BFRs may cause various health problems. The research aimed to assess the concentrations, potential origins, and health risks associated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel BFRs (NBFRs) in road dust and green belt soil in Harbin. The study revealed that ΣPBDE concentrations ranging from 0.15 to 193.75 ng/g (median: 48.01 ng/g) in road dust and 8.07 to 195.33 ng/g (median: 38.19 ng/g) in green belt soil. Notably, TBBPA contributed the most to the ΣPBDEs concentrations. And the concentrations of ΣNBFRs ranged from 2.34 to 130.53 ng/g (median: 18.48 ng/g) in road dust and 2.50 to 46.70 ng/g (median: 7.85 ng/g) in green belt soil. And tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) was the most dominant compound in both samples. Highways exhibited lower ΣPBDE concentrations in dust samples but higher ΣNBFR concentrations in soil samples compared to other roads. Moreover, most of the BFRs had a positive correlation with each other, suggesting that they may have similar sources. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested BFRs sources in road dust may come from wire, paint, building materials or commercial products, likewise, BFRs in green belt soil may come from household or industrial products. Health risk assessment indicated that BFRs in both types of samples in Harbin had no non-carcinogenic risk to residents. These findings provide valuable insights into understanding BFR pollution characteristics, identifying specific sources, and recognizing health hazards in dust and soil samples on roads from Harbin.

Isolation of new plant-derived lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is highly prioritized in developing novel starter cultures for plant-based fermentation. This study explores the diversity of LAB in Danish flowers and their potential use for plant-based food fermentation. A total of 46 flower samples under 34 genera were collected for LAB isolation. By introducing an enrichment step, a total of 61 LAB strains were isolated and identified using MALDI-TOF and 16S rRNA sequencing. These strains represent 24 species across 9 genera, predominantly Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Fructobacillus fructosus, Apilactobacillus ozensis, and Apilactobacillus kunkeei. Phenotypic screening for exo-cellular polysaccharide production revealed that 40 strains exhibited sliminess or ropiness on sucrose-containing agar plates. HPLC analysis confirmed that all isolates produced exo-cellular polysaccharides containing glucose, fructose, or galactose as sugar monomers. Therefore, the strains were glucan, fructan, and galactan producers. The suitability of these strains for plant-based fermentation was characterized by using almond, oat, and soy milk. The results showed successful acidification in all three types of plant-based matrices but only observed texture development in soy by Leuconostoc, Weissella, Lactococcus, Apilactobacillus, and Fructobacillus. The findings highlight the potential of flower-derived LAB strains for texture development in soy-based dairy alternatives.

Culter alburnus (topmouth culter)is an economically valuable freshwater fish. However, its insufficient tolerance to dissolved oxygen (DO) and ammonia nitrogen (AN) hinders its industrialisation. 360 experimental fish (4.87 ± 1.10 g) were placed in breathing chambers (oxygen level was 0.70–6.50 mg/L) or water tanks (control AN, 0 mg/L; low AN, 8 mg/L; high AN, 16 mg/L). This study analysed the effects of DO and AN on C. alburnus at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. (1) Physiology level: the floating point, coma critical point, and coma point at 20 °C group were significantly higher than those at 30 °C. The oxygen consumption rate of C. alburnus at 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C was (256.65 ± 25.87), (470.47 ± 83.84), and (520.87 ± 55.40) mg/kg.h. The LC50 of AN after 96 h was 24.13 mg/L, and the safe concentration was 2.41 mg/L. The survival rate in the high AN group was significantly lower than that in the other two groups. (2) Biochemistry level: The change curves of antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver tissue under hypoxic stress reached a maximum at 12 h and then decreased. In addition, the increase and decrease in enzyme activity (except malondialdehyde) in the high AN group was lower than that in the low AN group. (3) Molecular level: the angiotensin-converting enzyme and carboxypeptidase genes were the major differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in hypoxic stress, and the DEGs were mainly enriched in the ABC transporter signal transduction pathway. In addition, the serum/glucocorticoid-regulated kinase, stearoyl-CoA desaturase, and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase genes were among the major DEGs under high AN stress. The DEGs were mainly enriched in steroid biosynthesis or glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism transporter signal transduction pathways. In summary, it is necessary to focus on the DO and AN during C. alburnus breeding.

Effective monitoring of atmospheric concentrations is vital for assessing the Stockholm Convention's effectiveness on persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This task, particularly challenging in polar regions due to low air concentrations and temperature fluctuations, requires robust sampling techniques. Furthermore, the influence of temperature on the sampling efficiency of polyurethane foam discs remains unclear. Here we employ a flow-through sampling (FTS) column coupled with an active pump to collect air samples at varying temperatures. We delved into breakthrough profiles of key pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and examined the temperature-dependent behaviors of the theoretical plate number (N) and breakthrough volume (VB) using frontal chromatography theory. Our findings reveal a significant relationship between temperature dependence coefficients (KTN, KTV) and compound volatility, with decreasing values as volatility increases. While distinct trends are noted for PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs in KTN, KTV values exhibit similar patterns across all chemicals. Moreover, we establish a binary linear correlation between log (VB/m3), 1/(T/K), and N, simplifying breakthrough level estimation by enabling easy conversion between N and VB. Finally, an empirical linear solvation energy relationship incorporating a temperature term is developed, yielding satisfactory results for N at various temperatures. This approach holds the potential to rectify temperature-related effects and loss rates in historical data from long-term monitoring networks, benefiting polar and remote regions.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the distribution of the incidence and genotypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) among women with cervical cancer (CC) and precancerous cervical lesions in Yueyang City, China, to develop prevention and control strategies for CC. Methods A total of 3674 patients with cervical lesions and cervical cancer who attended 7 hospitals in Yueyang City between September 2019 and September 2022 were included. They included 1910 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, 718 CIN II, 576 CIN II and 470 CC, respectively. The HPV genotyping of the above patients was detected by Real time-PCR in the laboratory department of each hospital. Results The total HPV prevalence was 74.69% (95% CI 73.28–76.09%) in 3674 patients. The incidence of high- and low-risk HPV was 73.46% and 7.21%, respectively. The prevalence of HPV in CIN I, CIN II, CIN III, and invasive CC (ICC) groups was 66.65% (1273/1910, 95% CI 64.53–68.77%), 80.78% (580/718, 95% CI 77.89–83.67%), 83.88% (483/576, 95% CI 80.84–86.87%), and 86.81% (408/470, 95% CI 83.74–89.88%), respectively. The top three HPV subtypes in ICC are HPV16, HPV52, and HPV58. Abstract The past decade has witnessed rapid progress in deep learning for molecular design, owing to the availability of invertible and invariant representations for molecules such as simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES), which has powered cheminformatics since the late 1980s. However, the design of elemental components and their structural arrangement in solid-state materials to achieve certain desired properties is still a long-standing challenge in physics, chemistry and biology. This is primarily due to, unlike molecular inverse design, the lack of an invertible crystal representation that satisfies translational, rotational, and permutational invariances. To address this issue, we have developed a simplified line-input crystal-encoding system (SLICES), which is a string-based crystal representation that satisfies both invertibility and invariances. The reconstruction routine of SLICES successfully reconstructed 94.95% of over 40,000 structurally and chemically diverse crystal structures, showcasing an unprecedented invertibility. Furthermore, by only encoding compositional and topological data, SLICES guarantees invariances. We demonstrate the application of SLICES in the inverse design of direct narrow-gap semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. As a string-based, invertible, and invariant crystal representation, SLICES shows promise as a useful tool for in silico materials discovery.

Objective To evaluate the biomechanical stability of anterior transarticular crossing screw (ATCS) and compare it with anterior transarticular screw (ATS) which may provide basic evidence for clinical application. Methods Eight human fresh cadaveric specimens (occiput-C4) were tested with 5 conditions including the intact status, the injury status (type II odontoid fracture), the injury+ATS fixation status (traditional bilateral ATS fixation); the injury+unilateral ATCS fixation status; and the injury+bilateral ATCS fixation status. Specimens were applied to a pure moment of 1.5 Nm in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, respectively. The range of motions (ROMs) and the neutral zones (NZs) of C1 to C2 segment were calculated and compared between 5 status. Results ATS and ATCS fixations significantly reduced the motions in all directions when compared with the intact and injury statues (p < 0.05). In flexion-extension, the ROMs of ATS, unilateral ATCS, and bilateral ATCS were 4.7° ±2.5°, 4.1° ±1.9°, and 3.2° ±1.2°, respectively. Bilateral ATCS resulted in a significant decrease in ROM in flexion-extension when compared with ATS and unilateral ATCS (p = 0.035 and p = 0.023). In lateral bending and axial rotation, there was no significant difference in ROM between the 3 fixations (p > 0.05). Three fixations resulted in similar NZs in all directions (p > 0.05). Conclusion ATCS is a biomechanically effective alternative or supplemental method for atlantoaxial instability.

Abstract High levels of East Asian black carbon (BC) aerosols affect ecological and environmental sustainability and contribute to climate warming. Nevertheless, the BC sources in China, after implementing clean air actions from 2013‒2017, are currently elusive due to a lack of observational constraints. Here we combine dual-isotope-constrained observations and chemical-transport modelling to quantify BC’s sources and geographical origins in Shanghai. Modelled BC concentrations capture the overall source trend from continental China and the outflow to the Pacific. Fossil sources dominate (~70%) BC in relatively clean summer. However, a striking increase in biomass burning (15‒30% higher in a fraction of biomass burning compared to summer and 2013/2014 winter), primarily attributable to residential emissions, largely contributes to wintertime BC (~45%) pollution. It highlights the increasing importance of residential biomass burning in the recent winter haze associated with >65% emissions from China’s central-east corridor. Our results suggest clearing the haze problem in China’s megacities and mitigating climate impact requires substantial reductions in regional residential emissions, besides reducing urban traffic and industry emissions.

To thoroughly investigate the impact of meteorological conditions and emission changes on winter PM2.5 variation in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2015 to 2019, we leveraged advanced modeling techniques, namely, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the Nested Air Quality Prediction Model System (NAQPMS). The results revealed that a notable trend of high-PM2.5-concentration regions shifted from coastal areas towards to the inland regions. While emission reduction can effectively reduce the concentration of PM2.5, meteorological changes exert a significant impact on PM2.5 concentration. Unfavorable meteorological changes in 2018 and 2019 emerged as crucial factors driving PM2.5 pollution in the region (up 0~50 µg·m−3). Our findings also shed light on the potential sources and transport pathways of PM2.5 pollution in key cities within the YRD, indicating that the coastal channel of Hebei–Shandong–Jiangsu and the inland channel bordering Hebei, Henan, Shandong, and Anhui serve as major contributors. Light and moderate pollution was predominantly influenced by the medium-distance coastal channel (48~70%). Remarkably, short-distance inland (19~54%) and coastal transportation (33~53%) channels emerged as the primary causes of severe PM2.5 pollution in the YRD. To effectively combat this issue, it is imperative to bolster key control and prevention measures in these regions.

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are one of the most widely used plasticizers globally, extensively employed in various decoration materials. However, studies on the impact of these materials on indoor environmental PAE pollution and their effects on human health are limited. In this study, forty dust samples were collected from four types of stores specializing in decoration materials (flooring, furniture boards, wall coverings, and household articles). The levels, sources, exposure doses, and potential health risks of PAEs in dust from decoration material stores were assessed. The total concentrations of Σ9PAE (the sum of nine PAEs) in dust from all decoration-material stores ranged from 46,100 ng/g to 695,000 ng/g, with a median concentration of 146,000 ng/g. DMP, DEP, DBP, and DEHP were identified as the predominant components. Among all stores, furniture board stores exhibited the highest Σ9PAE (159,000 ng/g, median value), while flooring stores exhibited the lowest (95,300 ng/g). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that decoration materials are important sources of PAEs in the indoor environment. The estimated daily intakes of PAEs through non-dietary dust ingestion and dermal-absorption pathways among staff in various decoration-material stores were 60.0 and 0.470 ng/kg-bw/day (flooring stores), 113 and 0.780 ng/kg-bw/day (furniture board stores), 102 and 0.510 ng/kg-bw/day (wall covering stores), and 114 and 0.710 ng/kg-bw/day (household article stores). Particularly, staff in wall-covering and furniture-board stores exhibited relatively higher exposure doses of DEHP. Risk assessment indicated that although certain PAEs posed potential health risks, the exposure levels for staff in decoration material stores were within acceptable limits. However, staff in wall covering stores exhibited relatively higher risks, necessitating targeted risk-management strategies. This study provides new insights into understanding the risk associated with PAEs in indoor environments.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have received extensive attention in green chemistry because of their ease of preparation, cost-effectiveness, and low toxicity. Pickering emulsions offer advantages such as long-term stability, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness. The oil phase in some Pickering emulsions is composed of solvents, and DESs can serve as a more effective alternative to these solvents. The combination of DESs and Pickering emulsions can improve the applications of green chemistry by reducing the use of harmful chemicals and enhancing sustainability. In this study, a Pickering emulsion consisting of a DES (menthol:octanoic acid = 1:1) in water was prepared and stabilized using starch nanoparticles (SNPs). The emulsion was thoroughly characterized using various techniques, including optical microscopy, transmission microscopy, laser particle size analysis, and rheological measurements. The results demonstrated that the DES-in-water Pickering emulsion stabilized by the SNPs had excellent stability and retained its structural integrity for more than 200 days at room temperature (20 °C). This prolonged stability has significant implications for many applications, particularly in the field of storage and transportation. This Pickering emulsion based on DESs and SNPs is sustainable and stable, and it has great potential to improve green chemistry practices in various fields.

Surface ozone (O3), a critical air pollutant, poses significant challenges in urban environments, as exemplified by the city of Chaozhou in southeastern China. This study employs a novel combination of trend analysis and spatial source attribution techniques to evaluate the long-term dynamics of surface ozone and identify its sources. Utilizing the Kolmogorov–Zurbenko (KZ) filter and percentile regression, we analyzed the temporal trends of daily maximum 8 h moving average ozone (MDA8 O3) concentrations from 2014 to 2023. Our analysis revealed a general long-term downward trend in MDA8 O3 values alongside notable monthly fluctuations, with peak concentrations typically occurring in October and April. Additionally, the percentile regression analysis demonstrated a significant downward trend in MDA8 O3 concentrations across nearly all percentiles, with larger decline rates at higher percentiles, highlighting the effectiveness of local and regional O3 management strategies in Chaozhou. The changes in MDA8 O3 concentrations were mainly influenced by the short-term component, contributing 62.2%, while the contribution of the long-term fraction is relatively small. This suggests a significant influence of immediate meteorological conditions and transient pollution events on local O3 levels. To further elucidate the origins of high O3 concentrations, trajectory cluster analysis, trajectory sector analysis (TSA), and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis were conducted. The trajectory cluster analysis revealed that the northeast air mass was the main transport air mass in Chaozhou during the study period, accounting for 39.1% of occurrences. The northeast cluster C with medium-distance trajectories corresponds to higher concentration of O3, which may be the main transport pathway of O3 pollution in Chaozhou. TSA corroborates these findings, with northeast sectors 1, 2, and 3 accounting for 50.3% of trajectory residence time and contributing 52.2% to O3 levels in Chaozhou. PSCF results further indicate potential high O3 sources from the northeast, especially in autumn. This comprehensive analysis suggests that Chaozhou’s elevated O3 levels are influenced by both regional transport from the northeast and local emissions. These findings offer crucial insights into the temporal dynamics of surface O3 in Chaozhou, paving the way for more effective and targeted air quality management strategies.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the gut microbiota plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Carnosic acid (CA) is a major antioxidant component of rosemary and sage. Herein, we investigated the protective effects of dietary CA on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model with an emphasis on its impact on the composition and metabolic function of gut microbiota. We found that CA effectively attenuated DSS-stimulated colitis in mice, as evidenced by reduced disease activity index (DAI), and systemic and colonic inflammation. Additionally, CA restored microbial diversity and improved the composition of gut microbiota in DSS-treated mice. Moreover, Spearman’s correlation coefficient showed a significant correlation between the fecal metabolites and the gut microbiota species. Changes in gut microbiota and the correlated metabolites might partially explain CA’s anti-inflammatory effects against colitis. Future clinical trials are needed to determine the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of CA on IBD in humans.

Abstract MOx (M = Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ce) nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in porous C with uniform diameter and dispersion were synthesized, with potential application as S-absorbents to protect catalysts from S-poisoning in catalytic hydrothermal gasification (cHTG) of biomass. S-absorption performance of MOx/C was evaluated by reacting the materials with diethyl disulfide at HTG conditions (450 °C, 30 MPa, 15 min). Their S-absorption capacity followed the order CuOx/C > CeOx/C ≈ ZnO/C > MnOx/C > FeOx/C. S was absorbed in the first four through the formation of Cu1.8S, Ce2S3, ZnS, and MnS, respectively, with a capacity of 0.17, 0.12, 0.11, and 0.09 molS molM −1. The structure of MOx/C (M = Zn, Cu, Mn) evolved significantly during S-absorption reaction, with the formation of larger agglomerates and separation of MOx particles from porous C. The formation of ZnS NPs and their aggregation in place of hexagonal ZnO crystals indicate a dissolution/precipitation mechanism. Note that aggregated ZnS NPs barely sinter under these conditions. Cu(0) showed a preferential sulfidation over Cu2O, the sulfidation of the latter seemingly following the same mechanism as for ZnO. In contrast, FeOx/C and CeOx/C showed remarkable structural stability with their NPs well-dispersed within the C matrix after reaction. MOx dissolution in water (from liquid to supercritical state) was modeled and a correlation between solubility and particle growth was found, comforting the hypothesis of the importance of an Ostwald ripening mechanism. CeOx/C with high structural stability and promising S-absorption capacity was suggested as a promising bulk absorbent for sulfides in cHTG of biomass.
