Topological acoustics provides new opportunities for materials with unprecedented functions. In this work, we report a design of topological valley acoustic interferometers by Y-shaped valley sonic crystals. By tight-bounding calculation and experimental demonstration, we successfully tune the acoustic energy partition rate by configuring the channel. An analytical theory proposed to explain the transmission property matches well with experimental observations. An additional {\pi} Berry phase is verified to accumulate circling along the shape-independent topological valley acoustic interferometer, unique in the pseudospin half systems. Based on the spectral oscillation originating from the accumulated dynamic phase and {\pi} Berry phase, a simplified method to measure acoustic valley interface dispersion is explored, which overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional fast Fourier transform method and improves the measuring efficiency by simply analyzing the peaks and dips of the measured transmission spectrum. Moreover, an effective approach to tuning its transmissions, as well as the spectral line shapes proposed and realized by the local geometry design of the interferometer, exhibits strong tunability under an unchanged physical mechanism. Our work opens an avenue to design future acoustic devices with the function of sound wave manipulation based on the physical mechanism of interference and Berry phase.

The study of topological states has developed rapidly in electric circuits, which permits flexible fabrications of non-Hermitian systems by introducing non-Hermitian terms. Here, nonreciprocal coupling terms are realized by utilizing a voltage follower module in non-Hermitian topological electric circuits. We report the experimental realization of one- and two- dimensional non-Hermitian skin interface states in electric circuits, where interface states induced by non-Hermitian skin effects are localized at the interface of different domains carrying different winding numbers. Our electric circuit system provides a readily accessible platform to explore non-Hermitian-induced topological phases, and paves a new road for device applications.

We report a realization of three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic void space. Despite occupying a finite volume of space, such a medium is optically equivalent to an infinitesimal point where electromagnetic waves experience no phase accumulation. The 3D void space is realized by constructing all-dielectric 3D photonic crystals such that the effective permittivity and permeability vanish simultaneously, forming a six-fold Dirac-like point with Dirac-like linear dispersions at the center of the Brillouin Zone. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that such a 3D void space exhibits unique properties and rich functionalities absent in any other electromagnetic media, such as boundary-control transmission switching and 3D perfect wave-steering mechanisms. Especially, contrary to the photonic "doping" effect in its two-dimensional counterpart, the 3D void space exhibits an amazing property of "impurity-immunity". Our work paves a road towards the realization of 3D void space where electromagnetic waves can be manipulated in unprecedented ways.

An astroid-shaped loop of exceptional points (EPs), comprising four cusps, is found to spawn from the triple degeneracy point in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a Lieb lattice with nearest-neighbor hoppings when non-Hermiticity is introduced. The occurrence of the EP loop is due to the realness of the discriminant which is guaranteed by the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. The EPs at the four cusps involve the coalescence of three eigenstates, which is the combined result of the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry and mirror-T symmetry. The EP loop is exactly an astroid in the limit of an infinitesimal non-Hermiticity. The EP loop expands from the $M$ point with increasing non-Hermiticity and splits into two EP loops at a critical non-Hermiticity. The further increase of non-Hermiticity contracts the two EP loops towards and finally to two EPs at the $X$ and $Y$ points in the BZ, accompanied by the emergence of Dirac-like cones. The two EPs vanish at a larger non-Hermiticity. The EP loop disappears and several discrete EPs are found to survive when next-nearest hoppings are introduced to break the non-Hermitian chiral symmetry. A topological invariant called the discriminant number is used to characterize their robustness against perturbations. Both discrete EPs and those on the EP loop(s) are found to show anisotropic asymptotic behaviors. Finally, the experimental realization of the Lieb lattice using a coupled waveguide array is discussed.

We constructed an electrical circuit to realize a modified Haldane lattice exhibiting the unusual phenomenon of antichiral edge states. The circuit consists of a network of inductors and capacitors with interconnections reproducing the effects of a magnetic vector potential. The next nearest neighbor hoppings are configured differently from the standard Haldane model, and as predicted by earlier theoretical studies, this gives rise to antichiral edge states that propagate in the same direction on opposite edges and co-exist with bulk states at the same frequency. Using pickup coils to measure the voltage distributions in the circuit, we experimentally verify the key features of the modified Haldane lattice, including the group velocities of the antichiral edge states.

A pair of anisotropic exceptional points (EPs) of arbitrary order are found in a class of non-Hermitian random systems with asymmetric hoppings. Both eigenvalues and eigenvectors exhibit distinct behaviors when these anisotropic EPs are approached from two orthogonal directions in the parameter space. For an order-$N$ anisotropic EP, the critical exponents $\nu$ of phase rigidity are $(N-1)/2$ and $N-1$, respectively. These exponents are universal within the class. The order-$N$ anisotropic EPs split and trace out multiple ellipses of EPs of order $2$ in the parameter space. For some particular configurations, all the EP ellipses coalesce and form a ring of EPs of order $N$. Based on the tight-binding model calculations and photonic experimental visualization on graphene, we report the domain-wall-induced gapped topological kink states and topological corner states. In graphene, domain walls with gapless topological kink states could be induced either by sublattice symmetry breaking or by lattice deformation. We find that the coexistence of these two mechanisms will induce domain walls with gapped topological kink states. Significantly, the intersection of these two types of domain wall gives rise to topological corner state localized at the crossing point. Artificial magnetic field in electromagnetism is becoming an emerging way as a robust control of light based on its geometric and topological nature. Other than demonstrating topological photonics properties in the diffractive regime using photonic crystals or arrays of waveguides, it will be of great interest if similar manipulations can be done simply in the long wavelength limit, in which only a few optical parameters can be used to describe the system, making the future optical component design much easier. Here, by designing and fabricating a metamaterial with split dispersion surface, we provide a straight-forward experimental realization of spin-dependent gauge field in the real space using a biaxial material. A "magnetic force bending" for light of desired pseudospins is visualized experimentally by such a gauge field as a manifestation of optical spin Hall effect. The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. The Dirac equation for relativistic electron waves is the parent model for Weyl and Majorana fermions as well as topological insulators. Simulation of Dirac physics in three-dimensional photonic crystals, though fundamentally important for topological phenomena at optical frequencies, encounters the challenge of synthesis of both Kramers double degeneracy and parity inversion. Here we show how type-II Dirac points---exotic Dirac relativistic waves yet to be discovered---are robustly realized through the nonsymmorphic screw symmetry. The emergent type-II Dirac points carry nontrivial topology and are the mother states of type-II Weyl points. The proposed all-dielectric architecture enables robust cavity states at photonic-crystal---air interfaces and anomalous refraction, with very low energy dissipation.

The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transportation. The topological photonic crystal made of dielectric material can pave the road towards steering light propagations and contribute to novel communication technology.

We propose to simulate 3D Dirac points and line-nodes with nontrivial $Z_2$ topology in nonsymmorphic all-dielectric photonic-crystals with space-time reversal symmetry, which can be realized at infrared and microwave frequencies. Double degeneracy of all Bloch states in high symmetry planes is achieved via nonsymmorphic screw symmetries despite the fundamental obstacle of no Kramers degeneracy in photonic crystals. Two orthogonal screw axes lead to 3D $Z_2$ Dirac points on high symmetry Brillouin zone boundary lines. On the other hand, $Z_2$ line-nodes emerge as protected twofold degeneracy of Bloch bands with opposite mirror parities on the $k_z=0$ plane. The lowest frequency line-node is deterministic because of a degenerate-partner switching mechanism guaranteed by the fundamental properties of Maxwell equations and the nonsymmorphic screw symmetry. A pair of Fermi arcs with opposite chirality due to $Z_2$ topological Dirac points emerge below the light-line on (100) and (010) photonic-crystal-air interfaces. These robust surface states offer an unique opportunity to realize an "open cavity" with strong interaction between quantum emitters and engineered vacuum with nontrivial Berry phases --- an important step toward topological states of strongly interacting bosons. Realistic calculation for resonant coupling between cavity-photons and phonons in boron nitride thin film yields ultrastrong coupling with vacuum Rabi splitting reaching to $23\%$ of photon frequency. We also show that type-II Dirac cones have anomalous valley selective refraction: birefringence with both positive and negative refractions for one valley, while no refraction for the other.

Absorption of microwave by metallic conductors is exclusively inefficient, though being natively broadband, due to the huge impedance mismatch between metal and free space. Reducing the thickness to ultrathin conductive film may improve the absorbing efficiency, but is still bounded by a maximal 50% limit induced by the field continuity. Here, we show that broadband perfect (100%) absorption of microwave can be realized on a single layer of ultrathin conductive film when it is illuminated coherently by two oppositely incident beams. Such an effect of breaking the 50% limit maintains the intrinsic broadband feature from the free carrier dissipation, and is frequency-independent in an ultrawide spectrum, ranging typically from kilohertz to gigahertz and exhibiting an unprecedented bandwidth close to 200%. In particular, it occurs on extremely subwavelength scales, ~{\lambda}/10000 or even thinner, which is the film thickness. Our work proposes a way to achieve total electromagnetic wave absorption in a broadband spectrum of radio waves and microwaves with a simple conductive film.

A strategy is proposed to realize robust transport in time reversal invariant photonic system. Using numerical simulation and microwave experiment, we demonstrate that a chiral guided mode in the channel of a three-dimensional dielectric woodpile photonic crystal is immune to the scattering of a square patch of metal or dielectric inserted to block the channel.
