Abstract

Abstract. The febrile child with a painful bone or joint still presents a difficult pediatric diagnostic problem. Acute hematogenous osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and cellulitis are the most common causes of this symptom. Thirty-seven patients with these disorders were studied. Because findings from technetium-99m phosphate bone scans and roentgenograms are often normal in patients in the early stages of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis, children suspected of having this disorder were tested using gallium-67 citrate scans in addition to the other diagnostic procedures. The increased diagnostic accuracy of this approach over that of bone scan and roentgenogram studies alone was observed in the children with fever and bone or joint pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

THE DEVELOPMENT of radiopharmaceuticals that localize within the hepatobiliary system has facilitated evaluation of many difficult clinical problems, particularly differentiation between surgical and medical jaundice.In 1909, Abel and Rountree found that certain phenolphthalein dyes were excreted almost exclusively by the biliary system, and developed a clinical test of liver function based on measurement of fecal excretion of the dye. Sulfobromophthalein was later found to be superior to the other dyes for hepatic-clearance study, and in 1923 rose bengal was introduced by Delprat as a possible alternative. With use of fluorescent techniques, Mendeloff showed that stable rose bengal concentrated only in the polygonal cells and not in the reticuloendothelial cells. This knowledge led to Taplin's labeling of rose bengal with iodine 131, and permitted detection and imaging of the labeled dye as it was cleared from the blood, localized in the hepatocytes, and excreted into the bile en route to

30. Hydrops of Gallbladder Premature Neonate

Abstract

Gallbladder disease is uncommon in newborns, and its diagnosis by standard radiographic methods has rarely been reported.1 The use of the newer imaging modalities, ultrasonography, and hepatobiliary scanning using technetium Tc 99m to evaluate the neonatal gallbladder has not, to our knowledge, been previously reported.Report of a Case.—A 1.49-kg neonate was born to a 35-year-old woman (gravida 4, para 2, abortus 1) after a 31-week gestation that was complicated by bleeding just before delivery, which was by cesarean section. Apgar scores were 5 and 6 at one and five minutes, respectively. He was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit because of respiratory distress and prematurity and to rule out sepsis. An initial arterial blood sample on 50% oxygen, administered by hood, showed the following values: pH, 7.23; Po2, 52 mm Hg; and Pco2, 49 mm Hg. A chest roentgenogram showed moderate hyaline membrane disease

Abstract

Globally, lung cancer has risen to the leading cause of cancer mortality in both sexes. Currently, the only potentially curable stage of the disease is the pulmonary nodule. Since numerous studies have documented that in any population of nodules only approximately fifty percent ultimately prove to be neoplastic, non-invasive evaluation of nodules to reduce surgical morbidity, mortality and cost is desirable. Recent nuclear medicine imaging modalities have shown promise in the accurate non-invasive characterization of pulmonary nodules. These new technologies exploit the biomolecular alterations of neoplastic cells. The somatostatin receptor is relatively over-expressed in pulmonary neoplastic tissue when compared to most benign tissue processes. A somatostatin analog-technetium ligand ((99m)Tc depreotide) has shown significant promise in the rapid, convenient, accurate and cost effective characterization of lung nodules with conventional gamma camera systems. The development of this agent required synthesis of a somatostatin receptor ligand of high affinity for the receptor subtypes operative in pulmonary neoplasia and the incorporation of technetium without loss of pharmacore specificity.
