Background: Childbirth posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) poses significant challenges, impacting both mothers and infants. This work investigates whether childbirth PTSD is less recognized than PTSD caused by other index events., Methods: In two preregistered experimens we investigated the public and professional perception of PTSD resulting from childbirth compared to other traumatic events (i.e., sexual assault, car accident, terror attack, and an earthquake)., Findings: Study 1, conducted among the general population in the U.S. revealed that a woman depicted as experiencing PTSD symptoms due to childbirth, was less likely to be recognized as suffering from PTSD than a woman with the same symptoms resulting from other traumatic events. Objective: Childbirth can be a stressful event that leads to the development of acute stress. However, little is known about postpartum acute stress among mothers and even less among fathers. The current study aims to expand the understanding of postpartum acute stress symptoms by examining associations with dispositional optimism, subjective birth satisfaction, and social support in a moderated-mediation model., Method: Participants comprised 567 mothers and 109 fathers who gave/were present at birth, sampled at the maternity ward of a tertiary healthcare center. Self-report questionnaires were distributed a few days postpartum: demographic and obstetric information, dispositional optimism (Life Orientation Test-Revised), birth satisfaction (Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised), social support (the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), and acute stress symptoms (National Stressful Events Survey Acute Stress Disorder Short Scale)., Results: For mothers, birth satisfaction mediated the association between dispositional optimism and acute stress, and social support moderated the association between birth satisfaction and acute stress for all levels of social support ( B = .14, SE = .05, CI [.05 to .23]). For fathers, a similar moderated-mediation occurred; however, at high levels of social support, the association between birth satisfaction and acute stress became insignificant ( B = .17, SE = .08, CI [.02 to .32]; index of moderated-mediation = .08, [-.07 to .22])., Conclusions: Optimism through birth satisfaction may reduce acute stress levels following childbirth among parents, while different effects of social support for fathers and mothers were discovered. For fathers, high levels of social support were found to eliminate the association between birth satisfaction and acute stress and therefore buffer the development of postpartum acute stress symptoms. This study took place in one healthcare center with mostly Jewish participants; further studies are thus needed for better generalization. Background: We aimed to examine the hypothesized negative associations between childbirth post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (using the two-factor model of birth-related and general symptoms), social support, and a couple's relationship quality at 8-12 weeks postpartum. This analysis considered the longitudinal positive shared variance with acute stress disorder (ASD) symptoms measured shortly after birth, while accounting for obstetric and demographic variables., Methods: Participants included 246 mothers who gave birth at the maternity ward of a tertiary healthcare center. Self-report questionnaires were used 1-4 days postpartum (T1): Demographic information, the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R), and the National Stressful Events Survey Acute Stress Disorder Short Scale (NSESSS). At T2 (8-12 weeks postpartum), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS-7), and the City Birth Trauma Scale (BiTS)., Results: In partial support of our hypotheses, three hierarchical regression analyses revealed a significant positive contribution of ASD symptoms to childbirth PTSD general symptoms (β = .33, p <.001) and the total score (β = .29, p <.001), but not to birth-related symptoms. Background: The study's aims were to examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increases in depression levels of 21 months postpartum women who were initially sampled before the pandemic and whether COVID-19-related worries mediated the association between women's attachment orientations and this hypothesized increase., Methods: Participants comprised 185 postpartum women sampled in the maternity ward of a tertiary healthcare center in Israel followed from childbirth to 21 months postpartum in four-time points. . We analyzed demographic and obstetric information and the Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) scale at T1; changes in the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) levels at all timepoints (T1-4); and COVID-19-related worries at T4., Results: Results showed a significant increase in depression levels at T4 compared to T2 and T3, and an increase in the prevalence of women at the lower clinical EPDS threshold. COVID-19-related worries mediated the association between anxious attachment and depression (indirect effect: B = .21, p < .05, 95% CI = (.015, .47), R 2 =0.12)., Discussion: The evident effect of COVID-19 on postpartum depression is associated with variability between people. Thus, early assessment of women's attachment orientations might provide a strategy for identifying and treating women at risk.

Background: Previous research suggests that a negative birth experience is associated with symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety in mothers and partners. However, this has mostly been investigated within the first year postpartum and research on the long-term effects is lacking. Additionally, the role of relationship satisfaction and the interdependence between parents have not been considered so far., Methods: Couples (N = 1992) completed questionnaires on their birth experience, relationship satisfaction, and symptoms of depression and anxiety at two months, 14 months, and two years after birth, respectively., Results: Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Models indicated no partner effects, but several significant actor and indirect effects. A more positive birth experience was associated with higher relationship satisfaction and less depression and anxiety symptoms for both parents. Higher relationship satisfaction was in turn associated with less depression (mothers and partners) and anxiety symptoms (mothers). The association between birth experience and depression symptoms was partially mediated by relationship satisfaction for mothers and partners, while the association between birth experience and anxiety symptoms was partially mediated by relationship satisfaction only for mothers., Limitations: Due to the highly educated, very healthy sample with low levels of depression and anxiety as well as high relationship satisfaction, results cannot be generalized to less privileged parents. Moreover, all effects were very small., Conclusions: Results highlight the importance of a positive birth experience for parents' relationship satisfaction and mental health. Introduction: Despite the emerging body of literature on mother-to-infant bonding and the associated variables, there are various definitions of bonding construct. Also, there is a lack of a comprehensive conceptual framework of antecedents and consequences of bonding that would guide empirical work., Objective: Aim of the study was to provide a systematic review and synthesis of concept analysis studies on maternal-foetal, mother-infant, or father-infant bonding., Method: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, EBSCOHost (including PsycINFO), ProQuest, and CINAHL. In addition, a hand search was conducted. Papers were eligible for inclusion if they conducted concept analyses on mother or father to foetus/infant bonding. A qualitative meta-synthesis was applied to synthesise the findings., Results: Eight papers on concept analyses were eligible for inclusion. In meta-synthesis, six aspects of parent-to-(unborn) child bonding emerged, including direction, domain, process, timing, endurance, and parental gender. Defining attributes are (i) a close relationship, (ii) filled with positive parental affection, (iii) manifested during pregnancy as monitoring foetal development and behaviour and after childbirth in proximity and interaction. Antecedents, affecting factors, and consequences of the parent-child bonding have been summarised., Conclusion: Parent-infant bonding refers to an emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological tie of the parent to the (unborn) child, as a process from intention to have a child throughout infancy. This is a parental-driven process which can continue to evolve throughout child's and parent's life, characterised as enduring, committed, and engaged. Based on meta-synthesis, a conceptual structure of parent-infant bonding has been provided, which needs further empirical testing.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the trajectory of women's depressive symptoms during the first six months postpartum, identify risk factors (sociodemographic, obstetric and personality) associated with classes, and examine associations between classes and postpartum PTSD at two months and bonding at six months., Methods: The final sample included 212 women who gave birth in the maternity wards of a large tertiary health center that were approached at 1-3 days, two months, and six months postpartum and completed a demographic questionnaire and measures of neuroticism (BFI) and postpartum depression (EPDS), postpartum PTSD (City Birth Trauma Scale) and bonding (PBQ). Obstetric data were taken from the medical files., Results: Cluster analysis revealed three distinctive clusters: "stable-low" (64.2%), "transient-decreasing" (25.9%), and "stable-high" (9.9%). Neuroticism, general-related PTSD symptoms, and bonding were associated with differences between all trajectories. Birth-related PTSD symptoms were associated with differences between both stable-high and transient-decreasing trajectories and the stable-low trajectory. No obstetric or demographic variables were associated with differences between trajectories., Conclusion: We suggest that screening women for vulnerabilities such as high levels of neuroticism and offering treatment can alleviate the possible deleterious effects of high-symptom depression trajectories that may be associated with their vulnerability., (© 2024. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. Objective: The Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) is a self-report questionnaire designed to screen disorders of the mother-infant relationship. The PBQ was adapted to several countries, though there is no agreement on the accepted number of items and factors. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Hebrew version for both mothers and fathers., Methods: Participants (602 mothers and 144 fathers) from two separate samples were randomly recruited in the maternity ward of a large tertiary health centre. The mothers' samples were combined and redivided to form subsamples A and B. At T1 (1-4 days postpartum), the participants completed demographic questionnaire in person the PBQ and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) were administered online at T2 (8-12 weeks postpartum). The PBQ was also administrated at T3 (six-months)., Results: EFA on subsample A resulted in a two-factor structure, which was tested using CFA on subsample B. The model's fit was very good; χ(35) 2  = 83.68, p  < .001, CFI = .97, TLI = .91, RMSEA = .07, SRMR = .03. Additional reliability and validity analyses showed a very good fit for mothers. Scalar measurement invariance across mothers and fathers yielded satisfactory results. CFA among fathers, revealed adequate goodness of fit; χ 2 /df = 87.65/46, p  < .001, CFI = .95, TLI = .89, RMSEA = .08, SRMR = .05., Conclusions: The Hebrew version of the PBQ demonstrated satisfactory validity for both mothers and fathers. The revised version, with 14 items, measures bonding as a continuum rather than measuring bonding disorders like the original version. These findings emphasise the importance of validating the scale in different cultural contexts.

Objective: To compare the effect of a 3D-printed model versus 3D printed pictures on maternal- and paternal-fetal attachment, pregnancy-related anxiety, and depression in parents in the third trimester., Design: Randomized controlled trial., Setting: University- and clinic-affiliated hospital system., Participants: Between August 2020 and July 2021, we screened 419 women for eligibility. A total of 184 participants (n = 95 women and n = 89 men) were included in the intention-to-treat analysis, of whom 47 women and 44 men received the 3D-printed model, whereas 48 women and 45 men received the 3D printed picture., Methods: Participants completed a set of questionnaires before they received third trimester 3D ultrasonography and a second set of questionnaires approximately 14 days after the study ultrasonography. The primary outcome was the global Maternal and Paternal Antenatal Attachment scale scores. Secondary outcomes included the Maternal and Paternal Antenatal Attachment subscale scores, global Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scores, global Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores, and global Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire-Revised (second version) scores. We used multilevel models to estimate the effect of the intervention., Results: We found a statistically significant increase in mean attachment scores after the 3D printed picture and 3D-printed model intervention of 0.26, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.22, 0.31], p < .001. Additionally, we found statistically significant improvement in depression (mean change = -1.08, 95% CI [-1.54, -0.62], p < .001), generalized anxiety (mean change = -1.38, 95% CI [-1.87, -0.89], p < .001), and pregnancy-related anxiety (mean change = -2.92, 95% CI [-4.11, -1.72], p < .001) scores. The research aim was to study the possible effect of epidural analgesia, as well as other possible demographic/obstetric variables and subjective birth experience on postpartum depression, PTSD, and impaired bonding. This was a longitudinal study of 254 women who gave birth at the maternity wards of a large tertiary health center and responded to questionnaires at T1 (Childbirth Experience Questionnaire and level of fatigue question; in person, 1-4 days postpartum) and at T2 (Postnatal Depression Scale, Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire, and the City Birth Trauma Scale; online-two months postpartum). Obstetric and demographic data were taken from medical files. Having a previous psychiatric diagnosis and higher levels of fatigue significantly predicted worse outcomes in all measures (level of fatigue was not associated with the City Birth Trauma birth-related symptoms factor). Having higher education, being primiparous, worse birth experience, and longer second stage of birth predicted worse outcomes in some measures. Although epidural administration had no effect on any of the outcome variables, special attention should be devoted to women who had long second-stage births and/or suffering from postpartum fatigue to prevent postpartum psychopathology. In addition, demographic variables, such as primiparity, education, and prior psychopathology diagnosis should be considered to treat women and prevent postpartum psychopathology.

Objective: As mother-infant bonding difficulties are potentially detrimental to child development, it is of importance to study its etiology and associated factors. Only a minority of studies have focused on the role of personality and postpartum depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the etiology of bonding difficulties. The present article attempted to ascertain the association of vulnerability (Neuroticism) and resilience (Dispositional Optimism) with bonding, wherein postpartum depression and PTSD symptoms were possible mediators., Method: There were 504 mothers of infants, 0-13 months, who were sampled cross-sectionally using social media. Respondents completed an online survey consisting of the following questionnaires: demographic details, Neuroticism (subscale of the Big Five Inventory, BFI), Dispositional Optimism (Life Orientation Test-Revised), postpartum PTSD symptoms (City Birth Trauma Scale, BiTS), postpartum depression symptoms (Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale, EPDS), and mother-infant bonding difficulties (Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire, PBQ)., Results: Path analysis revealed 5 significant indirect paths: Dispositional Optimism affected bonding through EPDS (β = -0.04, p = .010) and through BiTS general symptoms (β = -.02, p = .019), and BFI-Neuroticism affected bonding through EPDS (β = 0.14, p = .001), BiTS birth-related symptoms (β = -0.03, p = .013), and BiTS general symptoms (β = 0.11, p = .001)., Conclusions: Both Dispositional Optimism and Neuroticism correlated with bonding difficulties, mediated by postpartum depression and PTSD symptoms. When all variables were measured in a single model, postpartum PTSD birth-related symptoms predicted fewer bonding difficulties while general postpartum PTSD symptoms were associated with more bonding difficulties. Taken together, these results can promote better understanding of postpartum psychopathology and mother-infant bonding to allow for better treatments. The purpose of this paper was to assess the impact and the post-traumatic potential of late termination of pregnancy (TOP) and stillbirth on medical staff and characterise personal attributes that modulate these possible outcomes. Fifty-one participants involved in the treatment of women undergoing late TOPs and stillbirths answered questionnaires including demographics, Neuroticism subscale of the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) and questions regarding exposure to stillbirths and late TOPs. None of the participants met the full post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) criteria. A correlation with a marginal significance was found between the number of TOP's/stillbirths attended during the past year and traumatic symptoms. Neuroticism moderated the association between presence in TOP's/stillbirths and post-traumatic symptoms among those who attended this event over the past month. According to our results, medical personnel do not appear to develop long-term and lingering posttraumatic symptoms following attending TOP's/stillbirths. Impact Statement What is already known on this subject ? There is a very little research on the ways in which medical personnel respond to Stillbirths, late miscarriages and terminations of pregnancy (TOP) of their patients and on the possible effect of their personality traits in this response. What do the results of this study add ? According to our results, medical personnel do not appear to develop long-term and lingering posttraumatic symptoms following attending TOP's/stillbirths. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research ? Further studies are warranted to better assess the impact of exposure to traumatic events in general and on the effect of late TOP and stillbirths in particular, on medical personnel and to identify interventions that may prevent posttraumatic symptoms among staff members when they happen.

Although continuous support during childbirth is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and has well-established benefits, the practice is still not routinely implemented in all maternity settings. We studied the possible effect of an additional lay companion (other than the partner) on childbirth experience and postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Two hundred and forty-six women, who gave birth in maternity wards of a large tertiary health center in Israel, responded to questionnaires in person at 1-4 days (Demographic questions and the childbirth experience questionnaire) and on-line at 8-10 weeks postpartum (City Birth Trauma Scale). Obstetric data were taken from the medical files. Women who were accompanied by their partners and an additional companion were lower in birth-related PTSD symptoms (M = 1.17, SD = 2.61) than women accompanied by only their partner (M = 1.53, SD = 2.79) (F(2, 240) = 4.0, p < 0.05). Women who had a single companion (M = 1.44, SD = 2.61) showed more birth-related PTSD symptoms than women who had two or more companions (M = 1.17, SD = 2.52) (F(1, 241) = 6.4, p < 0.05). In addition, women who had a single companion were higher in general PTSD symptoms (M = 3.91, SD = 4.73) than women who had two or more companions (M = 2.31, SD = 4.29) (F(1, 241) = 4.2, p < 0.05). No differences were found in childbirth experiences of women with single or multiple companions. Allowing more than one lay companion (other than the partner) may be a simple cost-effective way of providing beneficial support in all birth settings, promoting respectful maternity care and reducing childbirth-related PTSD levels and by that future psychopathology sequela., (© 2022. The aim of this study was to ask whether a substantial external stressor, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, affects the association between postpartum depression (PPD) and mother-infant bonding. Specifically, we aimed to determine whether worry regarding such an external threat differentially affected PPD and bonding by analyzing a longitudinal sample of postpartum women assessed before and during the pandemic. One-hundred forty women responded to online questionnaires at (T1) Pre-COVID-19: Six months postpartum (February 2018 to December 2019), and (T2) During COVID-19: Twenty-one months postpartum (April 2020 to January 2021). The strength of correlation between mother-infant bonding and PPD significantly declined from before (T1: R = 0.64, p < 0.00) to during the pandemic (T2: R = 0.44, p < 0.001; Difference = 0.20, p = 0.05). Furthermore, only PPD correlated with the worry due to the pandemic; thus the PPD-bonding association was weaker among women who were less concerned about the pandemic (F(3, 136) = 15.4, R 2  = 0.25). The study suggests that emotions and cognitions related to motherhood, such as mother-infant bonding, may be more resilient to external pressures such as a pandemic than affective states such as PPD. Mothers who experienced childhood neglect are at increased risk of parenting difficulties in adulthood, but adult attachment relationships may be protective. Eighty-eight postpartum women seeking outpatient psychiatric care completed self-report measures on adverse childhood experiences, adult attachment, mental health symptoms, and bonding. Beyond the effects of maternal mental health on bonding, childhood neglect predicted bonding difficulties only in mothers with more insecure attachments, suggesting adult attachment as a potential point of intervention to reduce the intergenerational transmission of risk., (© 2021. Childbirth-related PTSD is generally believed to result from multiple factors, including negative objective and subjective experiences and patient predisposing factors. There is conflicting evidence regarding whether severe childbirth pain affects development of PTSD. We hypothesize that a woman's retrospective subjective appraisal of birth pain is a greater predictor of postpartum-onset PTSD than medically documented measures of pain, and that a positive subjective experience communicating with medical providers during labor also reduces risk for postpartum-onset PTSD. A sample of 112 women, who screened positive for psychopathology within a year postpartum, were interviewed probing for their subjective labor experiences. Interviews were coded for subjective labor pain perception and quality of provider communication. Regression analyses tested associations between subjective labor pain perception and quality of provider communication with postpartum PTSD. Pain scores recorded during labor were not significantly associated to probable PTSD at any recorded time point up to 12 months postpartum. Positive perception of birth pain was associated with reduced risk of probable PTSD at 6 weeks postpartum (aOR = 0.34, p = 0.03). Positive provider communication was associated with reduced risk of probable PTSD at 6 months (aOR = 0.29, p = 0.02) and 12 months (aOR = 0.2, p = 0.03) postpartum. Pain recorded during childbirth is not necessarily a negative experience leading to trauma. For some women, even severe pain may be seen positively, and lacks traumatizing elements. Interventions to positively shift women's childbirth pain appraisal and educate medical workforce in patient-provider communication may reduce rates of postpartum PTSD. Parental bonding (recollection of own parents' parenting), adult attachment, and mother-infant bonding are all closely related yet distinct concepts of the parent-child relationship, sometimes used interchangeably in the literature. This study aimed to examine the associations between these concepts in a longitudinal path analysis design. A total of 262 postpartum women who gave birth at the maternity ward of a large tertiary health center in Israel completed a demographic questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR), the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) at 1-4 days postpartum, and the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) at 2 months postpartum. Parental care factor (PBI) was found to be associated with mother-infant bonding (PBQ), directly and indirectly through insecure anxious attachment (ECR). Denial of autonomy factor (PBI) was found to be associated with mother-infant bonding (PBQ) only through insecure anxious attachment (ECR). Encouragement of behavioral freedom factor (PBI) was found to be associated with mother-infant bonding (PBQ) in a simple correlation but not in the complete model. Objective: Although breastfeeding provides benefits for mothers and infants, multiple factors prevent women from breastfeeding. This article aims to explore the role of mothers' personal and contextual risk factors to breastfeeding rates with a special emphasis on understanding breastfeeding among African American mothers at 6 months postpartum. Design: This secondary analysis was capitalizing on previously collected postpartum data from a longitudinal cohort study on the consequences of maternal childhood trauma on mother and infant outcomes. Postpartum mothers ( n  = 188) completed questionnaires on demographics, childhood trauma history, postpartum depression, social support, and breastfeeding status at 6 months postpartum. Results: All risk factors (i.e., demographic and social support risk, childhood trauma history, and postpartum depression) were associated with lower breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum. When risk factors were examined in a single comprehensive model, only cumulative demographic risk emerged as significant. When partialing-out by race, being African American was the only variable associated with lower breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum. Conclusions: Our study confirms that African American mothers report lower breastfeeding rates at 6 months postpartum than non-African American mothers. This association held even when controlling for demographic and social support risk, childhood trauma history, and postpartum depression. We discuss our findings from an intergenerational and historical trauma, racism, chronic discrimination perspective that considers the multifactorial nature of past and current impacts on breastfeeding among African American women in the United States.

Objective: Full rooming-in, that is, mother and baby staying together for 24 hours per day after birth in the hospital, has been suggested as beneficial for positive maternal bonding. However, it has never been studied directly. We aimed to examine the association of full versus partial rooming-in and maternal bonding to her infant during the post-childbirth hospital stay., Study Design: Longitudinal questionnaire study., Setting: Maternity ward of a large tertiary health care center in Israel., Participants: The sample consisted of postpartum women (N = 293) in a maternity ward of a tertiary health care center who were fully or partially rooming-in., Measurements and Findings: Questionnaires were administered at two time points, immediately after childbirth (T1; days 1-4) and 2 months postpartum (T2). The Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), breastfeeding questions, and the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) were administered at T1; the PBQ was repeated at T2. Regression analysis revealed that the rooming-in mode did not significantly predict bonding at 1-4 days postpartum. However, the rooming-in mode was a significant predictor of bonding at two months postpartum only for women who practiced the rooming-in mode they had initially planned (Beta = 0.12, p < .05), while controlling for other demographic as well as obstetric variables. Women who chose and practiced partial rooming-in manifested more bonding difficulties than those who chose and practiced full rooming-in. Background: There is substantial evidence that postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with a poor mother-infant bond, however, fewer studies have examined the role of other postpartum psychopathologies such as birth-related PTSD or relevant trait variables such as adult attachment styles in the quality of the mother-infant bond., Methods: 210 postpartum women were sampled in a maternity ward of a tertiary health care center. Participants completed questionnaires at three-time points. Demographics questionnaire and the Adult Attachment style scale were administrated at 1-4 days postpartum, the City Birth Trauma Scale and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale two months postpartum and the Postpartum Bonding questionnaire at six months postpartum., Results: The associations between adult attachment styles and postpartum bonding were fully mediated by postpartum psychopathology. Avoidant attachment had indirect effects on bonding through general PTSD symptoms (Beta=0.05, p=.019) and PPD (Beta=0.06, p=.010). Anxious attachment also had indirect effects on bonding through general PTSD symptoms (Beta=0.04, p=.044) and PPD (Beta=0.10, p=.001). In contrast, birth-related PTSD symptoms were not associated with bonding. The model presented a good fit., Limitations: Women sampled from one health-care center and self-report measures used., Conclusions: Our results suggest that although birth-related PTSD symptoms may cause difficulties, importantly they may not be associated with bonding difficulties six months postpartum. Therefore, women could be reassured that their birth-related PTSD symptoms, may not impact on bonding. Consequently, if interventions are specifically aimed at improving the mother-infant bond, the general-related PTSD, PPD symptoms and insecure attachment styles should be the focus of treatment., (Copyright © 2020. Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication of childbearing, and recent studies have attempted to examine risk factors associated with it. The main study hypothesis was that a protective situational factor at a sensitive time period (full rooming-in postpartum) would moderate the associations between insecure attachment dimensions and PPD. Three hundred twelve women, in either full or partial rooming-in, participated in a longitudinal study at the maternity ward of a tertiary healthcare center. A Demographic questionnaire and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale were administered at 1-4 days postpartum, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale at 2 months postpartum. PPD was significantly associated with both anxious and avoidant attachment dimensions, but not with rooming-in conditions. In addition, women in partial rooming-in showed a positive correlation between insecure attachment dimensions and PPD, whereas no such correlation was found for full rooming-in women. A situational factor such as full rooming-in, which occurs at a critical time point for the mother-infant relationship, can moderate the association between maternal avoidant or anxious attachment dimensions and the mother's PPD levels. The study aimed to investigate the association of the Muslim religion, as a multidimensional factor, with social pressures related to body image concerns, among Muslim women in Israel. Four hundred and Seventy-five Israeli Muslim women ages between 18 and 30 years completed questionnaire measures of strength of religious faith, wearing a traditional head cover (the Hijab), positive and negative body image, media exposure, societal pressures to conform to Western body ideals and its internalization, from 2016 to 2018. Strength of religious faith and wearing the Hijab were positively associated with positive aspects of body image, while only strength of religious faith negatively correlated with body dissatisfaction. Further, mediation analyses revealed that the relationship between the strength of religious faith and both positive body image and body dissatisfaction was mediated by media pressures. Notably, reduced peer pressures had more influence on positive body image, while reduced family pressures were more influential for negative body image. These results are discussed with regard to promoting a more intricate and multicultural understanding of body image concepts.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely-used, 10-item measure of a core facet of positive body image. To extend its use internationally, we examined the factor structure and conducted a preliminary assessment of the psychometric properties of a novel Hebrew translation of the BAS-2. A sample of 613 Israeli adults (362 women, 251 men; age M = 29.52, SD = 9.47) completed the BAS-2 alongside demographic items and previously-validated measures of life satisfaction, self-esteem, self-compassion, and body investment. Exploratory factor analyses with a semi-random split-half subsample (n = 377) indicated that BAS-2 scores reduced to a single dimension with all 10 items. This factor structure was equivalent across women and men. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a second split-half subsample (n = 235) showed the 1-dimensional factor structure had adequate fit following one modification and multi-group CFA showed that the model was invariant across sex. Men had significantly higher BAS-2 scores than women, but the effect size was small (d = 0.22). Evidence of construct validity was demonstrated through positive associations with indices of life satisfaction, self-esteem, self-compassion, and body investment. The Breast Size Satisfaction Survey (BSSS) was established to assess women's breast size dissatisfaction and breasted experiences from a cross-national perspective. A total of 18,541 women were recruited from 61 research sites across 40 nations and completed measures of current-ideal breast size discrepancy, as well as measures of theorised antecedents (personality, Western and local media exposure, and proxies of socioeconomic status) and outcomes (weight and appearance dissatisfaction, breast awareness, and psychological well-being). In the total dataset, 47.5 % of women wanted larger breasts than they currently had, 23.2 % wanted smaller breasts, and 29.3 % were satisfied with their current breast size. There were significant cross-national differences in mean ideal breast size and absolute breast size dissatisfaction, but effect sizes were small (η 2  = .02-.03). The results of multilevel modelling showed that greater Neuroticism, lower Conscientiousness, lower Western media exposure, greater local media exposure, lower financial security, and younger age were associated with greater breast size dissatisfaction across nations. In addition, greater absolute breast size dissatisfaction was associated with greater weight and appearance dissatisfaction, poorer breast awareness, and poorer psychological well-being across nations. Objectives: Although the associations between religion and spirituality and mental health and trauma have been studied extensively across various populations, relatively few studies have focused on the postpartum period. This study aimed to shed light on specific domains of religiosity and spirituality that may be resiliency factors for positive postpartum adjustment defined as low depression and high quality of life in mothers oversampled for childhood trauma histories., Methods: We examined several religion and spirituality variables among 108 women at 6 months postpartum as well as prospective relations from religion and spirituality to postpartum depression and quality of life at 12 and 15 months postpartum., Results: We found that the personal aspects of self-forgiveness and forgiveness for others were most relevant as resiliency factors predicting lower postpartum depression and better quality of life even when controlling for other risks (trauma and demographics). Surprisingly, no other religion and spirituality domain had associations with postpartum depression or quality of life, with the exception of a significant negative association for organizational religiousness with quality of life at 12 months postpartum., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that forgiveness, especially to self and to others, in women who have been physically and mentally hurt as children may be associated with mental wellness and quality of life in the late postpartum period. Background: Bonding refers to emotions and cognitions towards one's infant. Breastfeeding is believed to facilitate bonding, yet only a handful of studies have empirically tested this assertion. This study aimed to confirm whether a positive association between breastfeeding and bonding exists and whether breastfeeding may be protective against the negative consequences of mood and sleep disturbances on bonding., Method: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of Israeli mothers of infants ages 1-9 months. The main outcome measures were breastfeeding history, bonding (Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire, PBQ), mood (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, EPDS) and sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI)., Results: Two hundred seventy-one mothers (21-46 years) completed the survey. 65.7% reported current breastfeeding, 22.1% past breastfeeding, 12.2% never nursed. The PBQ correlated with both the EPDS and PSQI. Breastfeeding was associated with greater daytime fatigue, but not with any other sleep problem, and was not associated with bonding. This negative result was confirmed with Bayesian analysis demonstrating that the probability for the null hypothesis was 4.5 times greater than the hypothesized effect. Further, hierarchical regression revealed a positive relationship between bonding, daytime fatigue and depression symptoms only among women who were currently breastfeeding., Conclusions: These findings suggest that among healthy mothers, breastfeeding may not be a central factor in mother-infant bonding, nor is it protective against the negative impact of mood symptoms and bonding difficulties. Theoretical and methodological bases of these findings are discussed.

As many as third of the women perceive their childbirth as traumatic and although prevalence rates vary between studies, around 2-5% of women in community samples may develop childbirth-related postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PPTSD). The City Birth Trauma Scale (BiTS) was developed to address the need for a DSM-5-based instrument that assesses PPTSD. The BiTS is a self-report questionnaire, which covers all DSM-5 PTSD criteria, including the four symptom clusters - re-experiencing, avoidance, negative mood and cognitions and hyperarousal symptoms. The present study aimed to describe the psychometric properties and validate the Hebrew version of the BiTS. Five hundred and four mothers of 0- to 12-month-old infants were sampled using social media and the snowball method. Respondents completed an online survey consisting of a demographic questionnaire and the Hebrew versions of the BiTS, the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R), the Edinburgh postpartum depression scale (EPDS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Hebrew BiTS demonstrated high internal consistency for the total scale (Cronbach α = 0.90) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.75-0.85) for the subscales. An exploratory factor (EFA) analysis yielded a two-factors solution, accounting for 45% of variance, with general symptoms loaded on Factor 1, and childbirth-related symptoms loaded on Factor 2, with both factors demonstrating high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.90, 0.85, respectively). High convergent validity for the symptom cluster subscales was demonstrated with the parallel IES-R subscales, EPDS and PSQI. A two-step cluster analysis indicated that dysphoric and hyperarousal symptoms best differentiated the severity of symptoms of respondents across measures. In sum, the Hebrew BiTS was psychometrically sound, indicating its utility for clinical and non-clinical research. The EFA and cluster analyses support the differentiation between symptoms of dysphoria and hyperarousal from trauma (i.e., childbirth) specific symptoms, suggesting that symptoms relating to specific aspects of the trauma differ qualitatively from general symptom in the phenomenology of PPTSD. Further research using clinical samples and comparing the BiTS to DSM-5 diagnosis using clinical interview is needed.

Recollections of own maternal care measured by parental bonding were found to be important in the pregnant woman's construction of herself as a mother. Although these recollections were studied with regard to various variables, there is a dearth of studies associated with pregnancy and childbirth. In this cross-sectional study, 341 pregnant women were recruited. Measures included a Sociodemographics-Obstetric History Questionnaire; the Childbirth Choices Questionnaire (H. Preis, M. Gozlan, U. Dan, & Y. Benyamini, 2018); the Parental Bonding Instrument (G. Parker, H. Tupling, & L.B. Brown, 1979); a question regarding the planned presence of the woman's mother at delivery; and the Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale (M.S. Cranley, 1981). Parental recollections of Care were associated with fewer natural birth choices (hence, a more "medicalized" delivery), lower maternal-fetal attachment, and a wish for the mother's mother to be present at the birth. Parental recollections of Encouragement of Behavioral Freedom in childhood were associated with more natural choices regarding childbirth. In addition, women with higher scores on the parental bonding Denial of Autonomy factor reported stronger maternal-fetal attachment. Thus, early recollections of experiences with caregivers as manifested in parental bonding may be a possible influence on the transition to motherhood, and working through possible difficulties associated with these recollections may improve adjustment to motherhood., (© 2018 Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health.)

Purpose: Although childbirth has been studied extensively with regard to postpartum sexuality, the association between the psychological aspects of childbirth and postpartum sexuality has rarely been examined. This research is aimed at studying the possible association of mode of delivery, childbirth experience, sexual functioning, and sexual satisfaction., Methods: Three hundred seventy-six primiparous and nulliparous women completed this web-based survey 100-390 days postpartum. The participants completed a socio-demographic and delivery details questionnaire, the Childbirth Perception Questionnaire (CPQ), the Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) and the Sexual Function Questionnaire's Medical Impact Scale (SFQ-MIS)., Results: Structural equation modeling showed that there are indirect effects of mode of delivery on sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction through childbirth experience. Specific significant indirect paths were found: mode of delivery to sexual functioning through childbirth experience [B = - 0.26, p = 0.023, 95% CI = (- 0.40, - 0.10)] and from mode of delivery to sexual satisfaction through childbirth experience [B = 0.11, p = 0.013, 95% CI = (0.05, 0.21)]. No significant direct effects were found between mode of delivery and sexual functioning or sexual satisfaction., Conclusions: The results point to the association of the psychological experience of childbirth, sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction. In addition, we found a possible indirect link between mode of delivery and postpartum sexuality. It can be concluded that the psychological factors associated with childbirth are important to the understanding of postpartum sexuality.

Objectives: The diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders may involve subjective self-report symptom measures that may be related to personality traits. We aimed to construct a model that integrates pelvic floor disorders, personality variables (optimism and neuroticism), psychological distress, and related demographic variables., Methods: In a cross-sectional study, conducted between August 2014 and June 2015, 155 women following an intake to an urogynecology outpatient clinic of a tertiary health center completed personality questionnaires of optimism and neuroticism (Life Orientation Test-Revised, 10-item Big Five Inventory), pelvic floor symptoms (Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory Short Form), psychological distress (18-item Brief Symptom Inventory), and a demographic questionnaire., Results: A path analysis mediation model showed that patients who had more pelvic floor symptoms felt more psychological distress and that psychological distress increased as the level of neuroticism increased. As for optimism, the correlation to pelvic floor symptoms was nearly significant. Optimism and neuroticism had indirect effects on psychological distress through pelvic floor symptoms in women with urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Neuroticism had a direct effect on psychological distress in these women as well., Conclusions: Our suggested statistical path analysis model supports the important role of personality traits in pelvic floor disorder self-reports and the effect of these traits on psychological distress. Therefore, the optimal treatment for pelvic floor symptoms should include psychological interventions in addition to traditional medical or surgical therapy in hope of reducing psychology distress associated with urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

Objective: There is conflicting evidence regarding the impact of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse on overall sexual function. However, psychological variables thought to be associated with sexual function, have not been fully explored. We assessed the sexual functioning of women with pelvic floor disorders while measuring for psychological factors such as distress and genital self-image., Study Design: In a cross-sectional study, 155 women in an urogynecology outpatient clinic of a tertiary health center completed a demographic questionnaire, the Brief Symptom Index-18 (BSI-18), Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20), Genital Self-Image Scale-20 (GSIS-20) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI)., Results: Linear regression showed that when controlling for age and depression, GSIS significantly predicted FSFI total score (Beta=0.38, p<0.001) and the Desire subscale (Beta=0.55, p<0.001). Due to the low response rate in the GSIS and FSFI questionnaires, a preliminary analysis was conducted to characterize the responders. On univariate logistic regression, response to the GSIS was negatively correlated with age (OR=0.94, p=0.02) and being in a relationship (OR=2.3, p=0.016), yet the effect of being in a relationship was diminished in a multivariate model that included age., Conclusion: The main variable associated with overall sexual function in women with pelvic floor disorders was low genital self-image. This variable is more important than self-reported symptoms, type of specific disorder or other demographic variables. Older women tended not to complete the scales concerning more intimate matters. Objective: To examine a possible association between maternal-request caesarean section (CS) and two intrapsychic psychoanalytic personality variables: object relations (OR) and unconscious defences., Background: While maternal-request CS is a growing phenomenon, studies are lacking regarding personality variables that may be associated with it., Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire was conducted in one delivery ward. During 2009, 59 primigravida, healthy women were recruited; 28 who had requested and delivered by CS without an obstetrical indication and 31 who opted for a spontaneous vaginal delivery. Due to missing data for some measures, only 27 participants were analysed in each group. All women completed the fear of childbirth (FOC) questionnaire, and the object relations (SCORS) and unconscious defences (DMM) measures of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), as well as questionnaires assessing background variables. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and a logistic hierarchical multiple regression were performed., Results: Preliminary MANOVA showed significant differences between groups in age, FOC and use of the defence mechanism projection. Hence, these variables entered as predictors of maternal-request CS to a logistic hierarchical multiple regression model. The model was found to have a good fit [χ 2 (4) = 38.19, p < 0.001]. Age, FOC and projection defence were found to be significant factors associated with maternal-request CS., Conclusion: Maternal-request CS was found to be strongly associated with age and FOC. Except for unconscious defence of projection, intrapsychic variables were not found to be associated with maternal-request CS. Possible implications are discussed.

Background: Although the impact of emergency procedures on the childbirth experience has been studied extensively, a possible association of childbirth experience with indications for emergency interventions has not been reported., Objectives: To compare the impacts on childbirth experience of 'planned' delivery (elective cesarean section and vaginal delivery) versus 'unplanned' delivery (vacuum extraction or emergency cesarean section); the intervention itself (vacuum extraction versus emergency cesarean section); and indications for intervention (arrest of labor versus risk to the mother or fetus)., Study Design: A total of 469 women, up to 72 hours post-partum, in the maternity ward of one tertiary health care institute completed the Subjective Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (score: 0-4, a higher score indicated a more negative experience) and a Personal Information Questionnaire. Intra-partum information was retrieved from the medical records. One-way analysis of variance and two-way analysis of variance, followed by analysis of covariance, to test the unique contribution of variables, were used to examine differences between groups in outcome. Tukey's Post-Hoc analysis was used when appropriate., Results: Planned delivery, either vaginal or elective cesarean section, was associated with a more positive experience than unplanned delivery, either vacuum or emergency cesarean section (mean respective Subjective Childbirth Experience scores: 1.58 and 1.49 vs. 2.02 and 2.07, P <0.01). The difference in mean Subjective Childbirth Experience scores following elective cesarean section and vaginal delivery was not significant; nor was the difference following vacuum extraction and emergency cesarean section. Interventions due to immediate risk to mother or fetus resulted in a more positive birth experience than interventions due to arrest of labor (Subjective Childbirth Experience: 1.9 vs. 2.2, P <0.01)., Conclusions: Compared to planned interventions, unplanned interventions were shown to be associated with a more negative maternal childbirth experience. However, the indication for unplanned intervention appears to have a greater effect than the nature of the intervention on the birth experience. Women who underwent emergency interventions due to delay of birth (arrest of labor) perceived their birth experience more negatively than those who underwent interventions due to risk for the mother or fetus, regardless of the nature of the intervention (vacuum or emergency cesarean section). The results indicate the importance of follow-up after unexpected emergency interventions, especially following arrest of labor, as negative birth experience may have repercussions in a woman's psychosocial life and well-being., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Parent-infant bonding has long-term consequences for the psychological wellbeing of the child. Considering the centrality of infant sleep patterns in infant-caregiver interactions in the first year of life, we propose that infant sleep patterns act as a catalyst or disruptor for mother-infant relationship, such that infant sleep patterns contribute to maternal mood, maternal sleep quality, perception of infant temperament, and her bonding experience. One hundred fifty-two Israeli mothers, of 5-8-month-old infants, responded to Internet-based questionnaires regarding their sleep, their mood, their infant's sleep, the infant's temperament, and their bonding experience. Eight percent of the mothers reported clinically significant depression, while 67 % reported significant sleep difficulties. Infant sleep difficulties correlated with maternal mood and sleep quality, infant fussiness, and bonding. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that maternal sleep partially mediated the relationship between infant sleep and maternal mood. Additionally, 22 % of the variance in bonding was explained by infant sleep problems and temperament. Notably, maternal depression moderated this effect such that infant sleep problems correlated with bonding only in those mothers who were depressed. The results suggest that infant sleep is a vector by which maternal cognitions and mood are transmitted to her child, with long-term implications for psychological development.

Objective: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an accepted diagnostic tool for infertility workup and is considered an invasive procedure that is generally regarded as uncomfortable and painful, though research on psychological consequences is scarce and outdated. The study objective was to investigate women's experience of HSG in terms of fear, anxiety and pain, as compared to colposcopy., Study Design: This cross sectional questionnaire study was conducted at two public women's health clinics in Israel between January 2013 and March 2014. 137 women were included in the study. 42 consecutively sampled women referred for outpatient HSG and 95 consecutively sampled women referred for outpatient diagnostic colposcopy. The main outcome measures were: state-trait anxiety, information seeking behavior, fear of pain, fear of the results, retrospective pain., Results: Compared to those undergoing colposcopy, women undergoing HSG expressed significantly higher anxiety prior to the procedure, feared the pain involved more, and rated the procedure as more painful retrospectively. HSG patients tended to report a higher degree of information seeking. Information seeking was correlated with higher anxiety among HSG but not colposcopy patients., Conclusion(s): HSG is a highly stressful procedure associated with fear, anxiety, pain and information seeking. Research is needed to find possible ways of ameliorating these emotions and behaviors as they may have negative impact on patient cooperation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objective: to study home, natural hospital, and medical hospital births, and the association of these birth models to resilience and birth experience., Design: cross-section retrospective design., Setting: participants were recruited via an online survey system. Invitations to participate were posted in five different Internet forums for women on maternity leave, from September 2014 to August 2015., Participants: the sample comprised 381 post partum healthy women above the age of 20, during their maternity leave. Of the participants: 22% gave birth at home, 32% gave birth naturally in a hospital, and 46% of the participants had a medical birth at the hospital., Measurements: life Orientation Test Revised (LOT-R), General Self-Efficacy Scale, Sense of Mastery Scale, Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ)., Findings: women having had natural births, whether at home or at the hospital, significantly differed from women having had medical births in all aspects of the birth experience, even when controlling for age and optimism. Birth types contributed to between 14% and 24% of the explained variance of the various birth experience aspects., Key Conclusions: home and natural hospital births were associated with a better childbirth experience. Optimism was identified as a resilience factor, associated both with preference as well as with childbirth experience., Implications for Practice: physically healthy and resilient women could be encouraged to explore the prospect of home or natural hospital births as a means to have a more positive birth experience., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: Research of psychological factors associated with imminent preterm labor (PTL) is sparse, compared with considerable research of preterm birth. We explored state and trait psychological variables associated with PTL, both pre- and postpartum., Methods: During 2012-2014, 56 women hospitalized due to PTL, and 33 pregnant women without PTL, responded during gestational week 20-33, to a demographic questionnaire, the Big-Five Inventory (BFI), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the Fear of Childbirth Questionnaire, and the Maternal-Fetal Attachment Inventory (MFAS). At 4-6 weeks postpartum, 35 and 23 of the women in the respective groups responded online to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Mother to Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS)., Results: Compared to women without PTL, women with PTL scored higher on neuroticism, openness to experience, and MFAS (p < 0.01 each), scored lower on consciousness and agreeableness (p < 0.01 each), and showed greater fear of childbirth (p < 0.05). Significant differences were not found in the postpartum variables of EPDS and MIBS. In the PTL group, MFAS (β = 0.36, p < 0.01), but not fear of childbirth (β = 0.08, p = NS), remained higher, after controlling for demographic variables and neuroticism., Conclusions: PTL was associated with personality variables, but not with psychological consequences, other than elevated prepartum attachment to the fetus.

Objective: To assess the effect of pre-procedural variables on post-procedural outcomes following colposcopy., Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Concord Women's Health Center in Israel between March 1, 2013, and March 31, 2014. Women waiting for colposcopy were approached and asked to complete questionnaires about anxiety, information-seeking patterns, fear associated with the examination, and demographics. After the procedure, participants answered questions about pain and state anxiety. The physician performing the procedure assessed the participant's levels of distress. A path analysis model was constructed., Results: Path analysis showed direct and indirect effects of both demographic and psychological variables on the main outcome measures. Physician's appraisal was related to fear, information seeking, state anxiety, and pain. Post-procedural state anxiety was related to fear, trait anxiety, pre-procedural state anxiety, past experience, pain, and information seeking. Pain was related to information seeking and age. Information seeking, pre-procedural state anxiety, and subjective pain served as mediators for some of these relationships., Conclusion: The effect of various psychological and demographic variables on psychological outcome variables following colposcopy should not be measured independently but rather as inter-related variables., (Copyright © 2015 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Purpose: This study was aimed at investigating the delivery continuum starting from constant personality variables and their association with Fear of childbirth (FOC) pre-partum, following the association of FOC pre-partum with the delivery process (as measured by birth outcome variables and subjective experience) and the effect of all of these variables over FOC post-partum., Methods: In this prospective questionnaire study, 101 nulliparous, singleton pregnancy, healthy parturients were randomly recruited during 2011. Questionnaires were administered on admittance to the delivery ward (FOC, anxiety-sensitivity index, demographic information) and 2 days post-partum (FOC, Big five inventory and a question regarding the birth experience). Medical Variables were taken from medical records., Results: FOC pre- and post-partum were associated with neuroticism (p < 0.05; p < 0.01) and anxiety sensitivity (p < 0.01). FOC pre-partum was correlated with mode of delivery, higher FOC pre-partum associated with instrumental delivery and emergency CS (p < 0.01). FOC post-partum was associated with both mode of delivery and length of the second phase of delivery (p < 0.05). Hierarchical regression analysis showed FOC pre-partum (β = 0.35, p < 0.01), anxiety sensitivity (β = 0.38, p < 0.01), mode of delivery (β = 0.19, p < 0.05) and birth experience (β = -0.17, p < 0.05) as major predictors for high FOC post-partum explaining 61 % of variance (F (7,84) = 16.82; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The difference between FOC levels pre- and post-partum was associated with personality variables and birth outcomes resulting in a model describing the variance in FOC post-partum by all of the above mentioned variables. As the implications of FOC over delivery outcomes are evident, women suffering from FOC pre-partum should be screened routinely before delivery and offered proper care.

This study examines the relationship between the psychoanalytic concept of object relations and real life behavior of being in an intimate relationship among heterosexual women. In a multi-method approach we used two different measures; the self-report Bell Object Relations and Reality Testing Inventory (BORRTI; Bell, Billington & Becker, 1986) and the performance based Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) Social Cognition & Object Relations Scale- Global Rating Method SCORS-G (Westen, 1995) to measure the object relations of 60 women. The Alienation subscale of the BORRTI and understanding of social causality subscale of the SCORS-G explained 34.8% of variance of the intimate relationship variable. Thus, women involved in a romantic relationship reported lower rates of alienation on the BORRTI and produced TAT narratives that were more adaptive with regard to understanding of social causality as measured by the SCORS-G than those not currently in a relationship. Objectives:  To investigate both the psychological traits and the demographic factors associated with cesarean section on maternal demand. , Design:  Cross-sectional questionnaire study. , Setting:  Delivery ward, Edith Wolfson Medical Center, Holon, Israel. , Sample:  Fifty-nine healthy primigravida with a singleton pregnancy were recruited during 2009, of whom 28 requested and were delivered by cesarean section without obstetrical indication, whereas 31 opted for spontaneous vaginal delivery. , Methods:  All questionnaires were administered to the two groups at term. Various psychological (fear of childbirth questionnaire, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III, Anxiety Sensitivity Index, State-Trait Anxiety Index and social support scale) as well as demographic variables were measured before labor and compared. A priori power calculation yielded a power of 95%., Main Outcome Measures: Fear of childbirth, various personality disorders and psychiatric clinical syndromes (29 Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III scales), Anxiety Sensitivity, State Anxiety Index, social support and demographic variables. , Results:  Differences in age and method of conceiving (p<0.001) were found between the groups. The study group reported a higher level of fear of childbirth (p<0.001), but no differences were found in all other personality characteristics measured (29 Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III scales, State-Trait Anxiety, Anxiety Sensitivity and social support scale). The origin of the difference regarding the fear of childbirth was located to two specific questions: 'Have you always been afraid of giving birth?' and 'Have you sometimes thought of the delivery as something unnatural?' , Conclusions:  The only psychological variable associated with the choice for cesarean section on maternal request was the fear of childbirth., (© 2011 The Authors Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica © 2011 Nordic Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Evidence regarding the effect of clients' choice of treatment on treatment outcome is inconsistent. This possible effect was examined by presenting participants with two treatments of test anxiety: advanced muscle relaxation and changing of internal dialogue. Clients (N=73) were allocated to three groups: choice (participants chose their preferred treatment), no choice (participants were assigned to their preferred treatment but were led to believe they couldn't choose the treatment they were assigned to), and wait-list control (participants received no treatment until the end of the study). There was a significant linear pattern, with the choice group performing better than the no-choice group with no feeling of control, which in turn performed better than the control group. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
