6. Reaction of nitric acid and its esters with organic bases

Abstract

A study of solutions of benzylamine in the solvent carbon tetrachloride has shown that an interaction between these compounds readily occurs leading to the formation of chloroform, ammonia, benzylamine benzylidene, sym-dibenzyl urea and benzylammonium chloride. These products have been isolated from such binary mixtures and a mechanism consistent with their formation is proposed. Considerable difficulties were met with in the analysis of the products, formed in reactions of tertiary amines with alkyl nitrate esters. By employing a wide variety of techniques it has been possible to separate and identify a number of related compounds formed from the interaction of n-propyl nitrate with tri-n-propylamine at elevated temperatures. A detailed kinetic study investigation of the nitration of N-methyl-N-nitrosoaniline by anhydrous nitric acid in carbon tetrachloride solution has been undertaken. The reaction was found to be first order with respect to this aromatic substrate and third order with respect to nitric acid. Catalysis of the nitration was observed by trifluoro-acetic acid and retardation by dimethylformamide and acetonitrile. An interpretation of the latter effect has been made in terms of hydrogen bonding with nitric acid. Using an isotopically labelled nitroso group in the aromatic substrate has permitted differentiation between the four possible reaction pathways - the essential stages of which are (i) direct nitration, (ii) intramolecular nitrosation, (iii) intramolecular nitramine rearrangement and (iv) intermolecular nitrosation. The intermolecular nitrosation route (iv) was found to operate and to give a small deuterium kinetic isotope effect.

Artists in the Archive explores the agency and materiality of the archival document through a stunning collection of critical writings and original artworks. It examines the politics and philosophy behind re-using remains, historicising this artistic practice and considering the breadth of ways in which archival materials inform, inflect and influence new works.\ud \ud Taking a fresh look at the relationships between insider know-how and outsider knowledge, Artists in the Archive opens a vital dialogue between a global range of artists and scholars. It seeks to trouble the distinction between artistic practice and scholarly research, offering disciplinary perspectives from experimental theatre, performance art, choreography and dance, to visual art making, archiving and curating.\ud \ud It includes a chapter by Galia and Pil Kolletiv that argues that reenactment of past events and artworks can be a critical strategy. Using theoretical writings by Friedrich Nietzsche and Guy Debord, the text examines the film Alien: Resurrection to propose a mode of repetition that doesn't collapse into the cyclical production of novelty dictated by the logic of the market.

Abstract

There is a growing evidence base that recovery is contagious and its primary mechanism of spread is through peer champions and groups. This paper examines a model of peer-based recovery support services from Cumbria, England, that uses a hub and spoke method to create visible recovery while actively engaging with and supporting community growth. Three case studies are used to illustrate how peer engagement, using the principles of community connection and assertive linkage, can offer core resources to a local community. The key conclusion is that sustainability of recovery communities rests on effective community engagement and meeting the needs of those communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research for this thesis is concerned with the logistics of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. Specific emphasis is placed on the development of models to determine the optimal mix of air launched missiles (ALMs) to induct for repair each quarter at intermediate level maintenance facilities. The Navy operates three such repair facilities. A set of three models are described which are intended to assist in managing the missile repair process. These models allow for effective control of missile readiness objectives, maintenance budgets, and repair priorities. Abstract

This paper is essentially a brief history of the Gillett and Hancock families of Alpine and their predecessors, the Humphris and Powe families. All of these families moved to the Big Bend in the 1880s. Prior to coming to Alpine, W.B. Hancock drove cattle up the Great Western Trail to Dodge City for five straight years, 1879-84. Henry Harrison Powe was the victim in the famous incident that gave rise to the legend of the Murder Steer. John Humphris was a well-known rancher and store owner in the early days of the Big Bend. This story comes from the author's personal reminiscences gained from stories told by his father, Henry Lee Hancock, and his mother Mary Gillett Hancock. Other references are a 100-page manuscript by the author's paternal grandfather, W.B. Hancock, and a 22-page manuscript written by the author's maternal grandmother, May Gillett. Another important source was May Gillett's diary which she kept from 1889 to 1956. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isobutane chemical ionization mass spectrometry of crown ether acetals (M), derived from ethanal, give [MH]+ ions from which species corresponding to 44 u are successively eliminated. Mechanisms are presented in which these units correspond to (i) ethanal and (ii) oxirane. An accompanying process is the elimination of ethyne. Abstract

Association of carbonyl compounds with protons to give cluster ions can be observed in conventional chemical ionization mass spectrometry. The variation of the relative ion currents of proton bound 'dimers' formed with acetone and methylethyl ketone have been examined as a function of ion source partial pressures. Multiple ion/molecule reactions with N-methylol derivatives of amides and carbamates and repetitive losses of water give protonated oligomeric species. Ions having m/ z values as large as 625 [M6H5H2O]+ have been detected in the chemical ionization spectrum of N-hydroxymethylurethane (M). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Consequential upon determinations of kinetic rate constants of ion/molecule reactions in methane and isobutane, simple equations are presented from which the pressures of methane and isobutane in the ion source of chemical ionization mass spectrometers can be calculated.
