Acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo) have been a familiar item at produce stands for decades in the United States and Canada, but little known or appreciated elsewhere. Following the breeding and development of sweet-fleshed acorn squash in Israel and its commercial introduction in 2007, acorn squash became a high-priced, popular produce item there. Scarcity of supply in winter has led to attempts to fill the consumer demand by using available protected cultivation infrastructure in the relatively mild area of southwestern Israel for production. Such production has proven feasible but it was not determined whether it would be preferable to allow the plants to simply grow sprawling on the ground or vertically, using trellises to train the plants to grow erect. Two sweet acorn squash hybrid cultivars differing in fruit size were compared, growing on the ground or on trellises, for yield, quality, and storability of the fruits. The hybrids bore fully ripe fruits from December through February, producing 56% higher yields when trellised rather than when allowed to grow on the ground. The fruits of trellised plants of both hybrids were more uniformly black-green and firmer than those of ground-grown plants. Their dry matter content at harvest and after 78 days of storage was very high, averaging 28% and 25%, respectively. Total soluble solids content of the fruit flesh from trellised plants was 19% at harvest and an extraordinary 20% after storage at 10°C, 70% RH. The fruit flesh of trellised plants was also more highly colored and had higher carotenoid, ascorbate, and anti-oxidant contents. Overall, trellising of sweet acorn squash during the winter under protected cultivation resulted in significantly higher yields and the finest fruit quality.

Objectives. Most patients who undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) experience moderate to severe pain in the first 24 hours after surgery. The transversus abdominal plane (TAP) is currently used for post-LC analgesia. Posterior, subcostal, or rectus sheath TAP blocks are the conventional approaches used. The aim of the current study was to compare the efficacy of combinations of various peripheral blocks on pain intensity and the use of pain killers, shortly after LC. Methods. This was a prospective, double-blind study, in which 200 patients who were about to undergo a LC procedure were recruited and randomized into 4 groups: patients receiving one of the following: TAP block alone, subcostal Tap block alone, subcostal TAP block with a TAP block, or subcostal TAP with a rectus sheath block. The intensity of pain (VAS score) and the use of painkillers were monitored in the recovery unit and in the department for up to 24 hours after surgery. Results. Pain levels decreased with time from 3.6 ± 3.2 at 30 minutes to 0.9 ± 2.0 at 24 hours after the surgery. Nevertheless, no difference between the various block types groups was noted. The percentage of patients who consumed analgesic medications decreased over time, from 83% at 30 to 21% at 24 hours after surgery. The mean/median number of medications consumed by each of the patients was lower among the patients who received a combination of 2 blocks compared to those who received a single one (mean/median of 2.7/3 and 2.8/3 for the TAP or subcostal TAP blocks, respectively; 2.5/2 and 2.3/2 for the subcostal TAP + TAP or subcostal TAP + rectus sheath blocks, respectively). Conclusion. A combination of peripheral nerve blocks reduced the use of analgesic consumption during the 24 hours after LC surgery, compared to standalone blocks.

Acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo) is a familiar fruit vegetable in North America, appreciated for its attractive appearance, good flavor, nutritional content and long storage life. A breeding program in Israel has produced three new acorn squash hybrids of enhanced sweetness and flavor. Presently, we evaluated productivity, quality, and storability of these new cultivars in fall plantings. The plants were grown trellised, in an insect-proof greenhouse, for fruit production during the winter to meet consumer demand. The plants were highly productive and bore fruits of superb quality, but there was a high incidence of fungal rots during postharvest cold storage. Pre-treating the fruits with hot water brushing and rinsing before storage was found effective in reducing rot incidence of the fruits stored at 15 °C, but only for one cultivar. Storing the fruits at 10 °C with reduced humidity (Rh 70%) enabled a 3-month shelf life with significantly reduced fruit-rot incidence and minimal effect on fruit quality of all three cultivars. Storage at 20 °C with reduced humidity was suitable for a 1-month period. These protocols for prolonging storage life will help attain controlled, gradual year-round marketing of quality acorn squash at uniform, reasonable price levels for farmers and consumers, and could facilitate overseas export.

Child maltreatment, especially during health crises, is a major public health issue transcending cultural, social, and racial contexts. We assessed the sociodemographic and related risk factors associated with the types and rates of child maltreatment. We also assessed the economic, social, and environmental characteristics of child maltreatment victims and their perpetrators, as they were reported to the Saudi National Family Safety Program (NFSP), with consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact. A secondary data analysis of a retrospective review was conducted to compare types and rates before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, utilizing descriptive and multivariate analyses on anonymized data from the NFSP. According to a predetermined list of relevant risk factors for child maltreatment outlined by the NFSP, these anonymized data were obtained and analyzed with no exclusion criteria (n = 1304). The findings showed that a child’s age correlated significantly and positively with their odds of being physically maltreated; as a child’s age increased by one year, on average, their corresponding predicted odds of being physically maltreatment tended to rise by a factor equal to 7.6% (p < 0.001). Neglected children, compared to those who had not been previously neglected, were predicted to be almost twice (2.23 times more) as likely to be victims of physical maltreatment on average (p < 0.001). Children were notably more likely to experience sexual abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic than those exposed to abuse during the period before (1.69 times). The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with significantly lower odds of physical child maltreatment (47.7% less). This study found no statistically significant effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s odds of being emotionally maltreated (p = 0.169). These findings support the existence of specific risk factors for child maltreatment for both child victims and perpetrators. They also attest to the significant differences between different types of maltreatment. A systematic, proactive system is needed to screen and document child maltreatment with a higher degree of integration with community reporting systems.
