Jones polynomials were introduced as a tool to distinguish between topologically different links. Recently, they emerged as the central building block of topological quantum computation: by braiding non-Abelian anyons it is possible to realise quantum algorithms through the computation of Jones polynomials. So far, it has been a formidable task to evaluate Jones polynomials through the control and manipulation of non-Abelian anyons. In this study, a photonic quantum system employing two-photon correlations and non-dissipative imaginary-time evolution is utilized to simulate two inequivalent braiding operations of Majorana zero modes. The resulting amplitudes are shown to be mathematically equivalent to Jones polynomials at a particular value of their parameter. The high-fidelity of our optical platform allows us to distinguish between a wide range of links, such as Hopf links, Solomon links, Trefoil knots, Figure Eight knots and Borromean rings, through determining their corresponding Jones polynomials. Our photonic quantum simulator represents a significant step towards executing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms based on topological quantum encoding and manipulation.

Quantum computing offers potential solutions for finding ground states in condensed-matter physics and chemistry. However, achieving effective ground state preparation is also computationally hard for arbitrary Hamiltonians. It is necessary to propose certain assumptions to make this problem efficiently solvable, including preparing a trial state of a non-trivial overlap with the genuine ground state. Here, we propose a classical-assisted quantum ground state preparation method for quantum many-body systems, combining Tensor Network States (TNS) and Monte Carlo (MC) sampling as a heuristic method to prepare a trial state with a non-trivial overlap with the genuine ground state. We extract a sparse trial state by sampling from TNS, which can be efficiently prepared by a quantum algorithm on early fault-tolerant quantum computers. Our method demonstrates a polynomial improvement in scaling of overlap between the trial state and genuine ground state compared to random trial states, as evidenced by numerical tests on the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model. Furthermore, our method is a novel approach to hybridize a classical numerical method and a quantum algorithm and brings inspiration to ground state preparation in other fields.

The precision of quantum metrology is widely believed to be restricted by the Heisenberg limit, corresponding to a root mean square error that is inversely proportional to the number of independent processes probed in an experiment, N. In the past, some proposals have challenged this belief, for example using non-linear interactions among the probes. However, these proposals turned out to still obey the Heisenberg limit with respect to other relevant resources, such as the total energy of the probes. Here, we present a photonic implementation of a quantum metrology protocol surpassing the Heisenberg limit by probing two groups of independent processes in a superposition of two alternative causal orders. Each process creates a phase space displacement, and our setup is able to estimate a geometric phase associated to two sets of N displacements with an error that falls quadratically with N. Our results only require a single-photon probe with an initial energy that is independent of N. Using a superposition of causal orders outperforms every setup where the displacements are probed in a definite order. Our experiment features the demonstration of indefinite causal order in a continuous-variable system, and opens up the experimental investigation of quantum metrology setups boosted by indefinite causal order.

Optimization problem, which is aimed at finding the global minimal value of a given cost function, is one of the central problem in science and engineering. Various numerical methods have been proposed to solve this problem, among which the Gradient Descent (GD) method is the most popular one due to its simplicity and efficiency. However, the GD method suffers from two main issues: the local minima and the slow convergence especially near the minima point. The Natural Gradient Descent(NGD), which has been proved as one of the most powerful method for various optimization problems in machine learning, tensor network, variational quantum algorithms and so on, supplies an efficient way to accelerate the convergence. Here, we give a unified method to extend the NGD method to a more general situation which keeps the fast convergence by looking for a more suitable metric through introducing a 'proper' reference Riemannian manifold. Our method generalizes the NDG, and may give more insight of the optimization methods.

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) state has been searched intensively in Kitaev-like materials, such as the Iridium oxides $A_2$IrO$_3$ and $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. The half-filled Kitaev-Hubbard model with bond dependent hopping terms is used to describe the Kitaev-like materials, which is calculated using the state-of-the-art fermionic projected entangled pair states (fPEPS) method. We find a QSL phase near the Mott insulator transition, which has a strong first-order transition to the semi-metal phase with the decrease of Hubbard $U$. We suggest that a promising routine to find the QSL is to find the Iridium oxides that are near the Mott insulator transitions.

Exceptional points (EPs), at which more than one eigenvalue and eigenvector coalesce, are unique spectral features of Non-Hermiticity (NH) systems. They exist widely in open systems with complex energy spectra. We experimentally demonstrate the appearance of paired EPs in a periodical driven degenerate optical cavity along the synthetic orbital angular momentum (OAM) dimension with a tunable parameter. The complex-energy band structures and the key features of EPs, i.e. their Fermi arcs, parity-time symmetry breaking transition, energy swapping, and half-integer band windings are directly observed by detecting the cavity's transmission spectrum. Our results advance the fundamental understanding of NH physics and demonstrate the flexibility of using the photonic synthetic dimensions to implement NH systems.

Synthetic dimensions based on particles' internal degrees of freedom, such as frequency, spatial modes and arrival time, have attracted significant attention. They offer ideal large-scale lattices to simulate nontrivial topological phenomena. Exploring more synthetic dimensions is one of the paths toward higher dimensional physics. In this work, we design and experimentally control the coupling among synthetic dimensions consisting of the intrinsic photonic orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum degrees of freedom in a degenerate optical resonant cavity, which generates a periodically driven spin-orbital coupling system. We directly characterize the system's properties, including the density of states, energy band structures and topological windings, through the transmission intensity measurements. Our work demonstrates a novel mechanism for exploring the spatial modes of twisted photons as the synthetic dimension, which paves the way to design rich topological physics in a highly compact platform.

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are widely applied in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era and are expected to demonstrate quantum advantage. However, training VQAs faces difficulties, one of which is the so-called barren plateaus (BP) phenomenon, where gradients of cost functions vanish exponentially with the number of qubits. In this paper, inspired by transfer learning, where knowledge of pre-solved tasks could be further used in a different but related work with training efficiency improved, we report a parameter initialization method to mitigate BP. In the method, a small-sized task is solved with a VQA. Then the ansatz and its optimum parameters are transferred to tasks with larger sizes. Numerical simulations show that this method could mitigate BP and improve training efficiency. A brief discussion on how this method can work well is also provided. The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm intending to find the ground state of a target Hamiltonian. Theoretically, QAOA can obtain the approximate solution if the quantum circuit is deep enough. Actually, the performance of QAOA decreases practically if the quantum circuit is deep since near-term devices are not noise-free and the errors caused by noise accumulate as the quantum circuit increases. In order to reduce the depth of quantum circuits, we propose a new ansatz dubbed as "Shortcuts to QAOA" (S-QAOA), S-QAOA provides shortcuts to the ground state of target Hamiltonian by including more two-body interactions and releasing the parameter freedoms. To be specific, besides the existing ZZ interaction in the QAOA ansatz, other two-body interactions are introduced in the S-QAOA ansatz such that the approximate solutions could be obtained with smaller circuit depth. Considering the MaxCut problem and Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, numerically computation shows the YY interaction has the best performance. The reason for this might arise from the counterdiabatic effect generated by YY interaction. On top of this, we release the freedom of parameters of two-body interactions, which a priori do not necessarily have to be fully identical, and numerical results show that it is worth paying the extra cost of having more parameter freedom since one has a greater improvement on success rate.

Genuine multipartite entanglement represents the strongest type of entanglement, which is an essential resource for quantum information processing. Standard methods to detect genuine multipartite entanglement, e.g., entanglement witnesses, state tomography, or quantum state verification, require full knowledge of the Hilbert space dimension and precise calibration of measurement devices, which are usually difficult to acquire in an experiment. The most radical way to overcome these problems is to detect entanglement solely based on the Bell-like correlations of measurement outcomes collected in the experiment, namely, device-independently (DI). However, it is difficult to certify genuine entanglement of practical multipartite states in this way, and even more difficult to quantify it, due to the difficulty to identify optimal multipartite Bell inequalities and protocols tolerant to state impurity. In this work, we explore a general and robust DI method which can be applied to various realistic multipartite quantum state in arbitrary finite dimension, while merely relying on bipartite Bell inequalities. Our method allows us both to certify the presence of genuine multipartite entanglement and to quantify it. Several important classes of entangled states are tested with this method, leading to the detection of genuinely entangled states. We also certify genuine multipartite entanglement in weakly-entangled GHZ states, thus showing that the method applies equally well to less standard states.

The non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function are central objects in number theory. In particular, they enable one to reproduce the prime numbers. They have also attracted the attention of physicists working in Random Matrix Theory and Quantum Chaos for decades. Here we present an experimental observation of the lowest non-trivial Riemann zeros by using a trapped ion qubit in a Paul trap, periodically driven with microwave fields. The waveform of the driving is engineered such that the dynamics of the ion is frozen when the driving parameters coincide with a zero of the real component of the zeta function. Scanning over the driving amplitude thus enables the locations of the Riemann zeros to be measured experimentally to a high degree of accuracy, providing a physical embodiment of these fascinating mathematical objects in the quantum realm., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

A major challenge in practical quantum computation is the ineludible errors caused by the interaction of quantum systems with their environment. Fault-tolerant schemes, in which logical qubits are encoded by several physical qubits, enable correct output of logical qubits under the presence of errors. However, strict requirements to encode qubits and operators render the implementation of a full fault-tolerant computation challenging even for the achievable noisy intermediate-scale quantum technology. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of the threshold in a special fault-tolerant protocol. Four physical qubits are implemented using 16 optical spatial modes, in which 8 modes are used to encode two logical qubits. The experimental results clearly show that the probability of correct output in the circuit, formed with fault-tolerant gates, is higher than that in the corresponding non-encoded circuit when the error rate is below the threshold. In contrast, when the error rate is above the threshold, no advantage is observed in the fault-tolerant implementation. Quasiparticle poisoning, expected to arise during the measurement of Majorana zero mode state, poses a fundamental problem towards the realization of Majorana-based quantum computation. Parafermions, a natural generalization of Majorana fermions, can encode topological qudits immune to quasiparticle poisoning. While parafermions are expected to emerge in superconducting fractional quantum Hall systems, they are not yet attainable with current technology. To bypass this problem, we employ a photonic quantum simulator to experimentally demonstrate the key components of parafermion-based universal quantum computation. Our contributions in this article are twofold. First, by manipulating the photonic states, we realize Clifford operator Berry phases that correspond to braiding statistics of parafermions. Second, we investigate the quantum contextuality in a topological system for the first time by demonstrating the contextuality of parafermion encoded qudit states. Importantly, we find that the topologically-encoded contextuality opens the way to magic state distillation, while both the contextuality and the braiding-induced Clifford gates are resilient against local noise. Using the concept of non-degenerate Bell inequality, we show that quantum entanglement, the critical resource for various quantum information processing tasks, can be quantified for any unknown quantum states in a semi-device-independent manner, where the quantification is based on the experimentally obtained probability distribution and beforehand knowledge on quantum dimension only. Specifically, as an application of our approach on multi-level systems, we experimentally quantify the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of distillation for qutrit-qutrit quantum systems. In addition, to demonstrate our approach for multi-partite systems, we further quantify the geometry measure of entanglement of three-qubit quantum systems. Quantum state verification provides an efficient approach to characterize the reliability of quantum devices for generating certain target states. The figure of merit of a specific strategy is the estimated infidelity $\epsilon$ of the tested state to the target state, given a certain number of performed measurements n. Entangled measurements constitute the globally optimal strategy and achieve the scaling that \epsilon is inversely proportional to n. Recent advances show that it is possible to achieve the same scaling simply with non-adaptive local measurements, however, the performance is still worse than the globally optimal bound up to a constant factor. In this work, by introducing classical communication, we experimentally implement an adaptive quantum state verification. The constant-factor is minimized from ~2.5 to 1.5 in this experiment, which means that only 60% measurements are required to achieve a certain value of \epsilon compared to optimal non-adaptive local strategy. The quantum walk (QW), as the quantum analog of classical random walk, provides a feasible platform to study the topological phenomenon and non-equilibrium dynamics. Here, we propose a novel scheme to realize the quantum walk with a single trapped ion where the Fock states provides the walk space and zero phonon state $\left|n=0\right\rangle $ serves as its natural boundary. Thus, our scheme offers the unique opportunity to investigate the dynamics of the bound states of the corresponding topological systems. Particularly, the quench dynamics of the bound states can be extensively studied by tuning the bulk parameters and the local boundary operator, which are experimentally accessible. The concept of supersymmetry developed in particle physics has been applied to various fields of modern physics. In quantum mechanics, the supersymmetric systems refer to the systems involving two supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians, whose energy levels are degeneracy except one of the systems has an extra ground state possibly, and the eigenstates of the partner systems can be mapped onto each other. Recently, an interferometric scheme has been proposed to show this relationship in ultracold atoms [Phys. Rev.A 96, 043624 (2017)]. Here this approach is generalized to linear optics for observing the supersymmetric dynamics with photons. The time evolution operator is simulated approximately via Suzuki-Trotter expansion with considering the realization of the kinetic and potential terms separately. The former is realized through the diffraction nature of light and the later is implemented using phase plate. Additionally, we propose an interferometric approach which can be implemented perfectly using amplitude alternator to realize the non-unitary operator. Relativity theory severely restricts the ability to perform nonlocal measurements in quantum mechanics. Studying such nonlocal schemes may thus reveal insights regarding the relations between these two fundamental theories. Therefore, for the last several decades, nonlocal measurements have stimulated considerable interest. However, the experimental implementation of nonlocal measurements imposes profound restrictions due to the fact that the interaction Hamiltonian cannot contain, in general, nonlocal observables such as the product of local observables belonging to different particles at spacelike-separated regions. In this work, we experimentally realize a scheme for nonlocal measurements with the aid of probabilistic quantum erasure. We apply this scheme to the tasks of performing high accuracy nonlocal measurements of the parity, as well as measurements in the Bell basis, which do not necessitate classical communication between the parties. Unlike other techniques, the nonlocal measurement outcomes are available locally (upon successful postselection). The state reconstructed via performing quantum tomography on the system after the nonlocal measurement indicates the success of the scheme in retrieving nonlocal information while erasing any local data previously acquired by the parties. This measurement scheme allows realizing any controlled-controlled-gate with any coupling strength. Entanglement and wave function description are two of the core concepts that make quantum mechanics such a unique theory. A method to directly measure the wave function, using Weak Values, was demonstrated by Lundeen et al., Nature \textbf{474}, 188(2011). However, it is not applicable to a scenario of two disjoint systems, where nonlocal entanglement can be a crucial element since that requires obtaining the Weak Values of nonlocal observables. Here, for the first time, we propose a method to directly measure a nonlocal wave function of a bipartite system, using Modular Values. Macroscopic realism is a classical worldview that a macroscopic system is always determinately in one of the two or more macroscopically distinguishable states available to it, and so is never in a superposition of these states. The question of whether there is a fundamental limitation on the possibility to observe quantum phenomena at the macroscopic scale remains unclear. Here we implement a strict and simple protocol to test macroscopic realism in a light-matter interfaced system. We create a micro-macro entanglement with two macroscopically distinguishable solid-state components and rule out those theories which would deny coherent superpositions of up to 76 atomic excitations shared by 10^10 ions in two separated solids. These results provide a general method to enhance the size of superposition states of atoms by utilizing quantum memory techniques and to push the envelope of macroscopicity at higher levels., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the 2D t-J model at a hole doping of $\bar{n}_h$=1/8 using recently developed high accuracy fermionic projected entangled pair states(fPEPS) method. By applying stochastic gradient descent method combined with Monte Carlo sampling technique, we obtain the ground state hole energy $E_{\rm hole}$=-1.6186 for $J/t$=0.4. We show that the ground state has stable diagonal stripes instead of vertical stripes with width of 4 unit cells, and stripe filling $\rho_l$=0.5. We further show that the long range superconductivity order is suppressed at this point.

The Riemann hypothesis, one of the most important open problems in pure mathematics, implies the most profound secret of prime numbers. One of the most interesting approaches to solve this hypothesis is to connect the problem with the spectrum of the physical Hamiltonian of a quantum system. However, none of the proposed quantum Hamiltonians have been experimentally feasible.Here, we report the first experiment to identify the first non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function and the first two zeros of P\'olya's fake zeta function, using a novel Floquet method, through properly designed periodically driving functions. According to this method, the zeros of these functions are characterized by the occurrence of crossings of quasi-energies when the dynamics of the system are frozen. The experimentally obtained zeros are in excellent agreement with their exact values. We report the first implementation of the von Neumann instantaneous measurements of nonlocal variables which becomes possible due to technological achievements in creating hyperentangled photons. Tests of reliability and of the nondemolition property of the measurements have been performed with high precision showing the suitability of the scheme as a basic ingredient of numerous quantum information protocols. The method allows to demonstrate for the first time with strong measurements a special feature of pre- and postselected quantum systems: the failure of the product rule. It has been verified experimentally that for a particular pre- and postselected pair of particles a single measurement on particle $A$ yields with certainty $\sigma_x^A=-1$, a single measurement on particle $B$ yields with certainty $\sigma_y^B=-1$, and a single nonlocal measurement on particles $A$ and $B$ yields with certainty $\sigma_x^A \sigma_y^B=-1$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PRL

We report the experimental measurement of the winding number in an unitary chiral quantum walk. Fundamentally, the spin-orbit coupling in discrete time quantum walks is implemented via birefringent crystal collinearly cut based on time-multiplexing scheme. Our protocol is compact and avoids extra loss, making it suitable for realizing genuine single-photon quantum walks at a large-scale. By adopting heralded single-photon as the walker and with a high time resolution technology in single-photon detection, we carry out a 50-step Hadamard discrete-time quantum walk with high fidelity up to 0.948$\pm$0.007. Particularly, we can reconstruct the complete wave-function of the walker that starts the walk in a single lattice site through local tomography of each site. Through a Fourier transform, the wave-function in quasi-momentum space can be obtained. With this ability, we propose and report a method to reconstruct the eigenvectors of the system Hamiltonian in quasi-momentum space and directly read out the winding numbers in different topological phases (trivial and non-trivial) in the presence of chiral symmetry. By introducing nonequivalent time-frames, we show that the whole topological phases in periodically driven system can also be characterized by two different winding numbers. Entanglement generation in discrete time quantum walks is deemed to be another key property beyond the transport behaviors. The latter has been widely used in investigating the localization or topology in quantum walks. However, there are few experiments involving the former for the challenges in full reconstruction of the final wave function. Here, we report an experiment demonstrating the enhancement of the entanglement in quantum walks using dynamic disorder. Through reconstructing the local spinor state for each site, von Neumann entropy can be obtained and used to quantify the coin-position entanglement. We find that the enhanced entanglement in the dynamically disordered quantum walks is independent of the initial state, which is different from the entanglement generation in the Hadamard quantum walks. Quantum processes of inherent dynamical nature, such as quantum walks (QWs), defy a description in terms of an equilibrium statistical physics ensemble. Up to now, it has remained a key challenge to identify general principles behind the underlying unitary quantum dynamics. Here, we show and experimentally observe that split-step QWs admit a characterization in terms of a dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP). This integer-quantized DTOP measures, at a given time, the winding of the geometric phase accumulated by the wave-function during the QW. We observe distinct dynamical regimes in our experimentally realized QWs each of which can be attributed to a qualitatively different temporal behavior of the DTOP. Upon identifying an equivalent many-body problem, we reveal an intriguing connection between the nonanalytic changes of the DTOP in QWs and the occurrence of dynamical quantum phase transitions.

Quantum entanglement is the key resource for quantum information processing. Device-independent certification of entangled states is a long standing open question, which arouses the concept of self-testing. The central aim of self-testing is to certify the state and measurements of quantum systems without any knowledge of their inner workings, even when the used devices cannot be trusted. Specifically, utilizing Bell's theorem, it is possible to place a boundary on the singlet fidelity of entangled qubits. Here, beyond this rough estimation, we experimentally demonstrate a complete self-testing process for various pure bipartite entangled states up to four dimensions, by simply inspecting the correlations of the measurement outcomes. We show that this self-testing process can certify the exact form of entangled states with fidelities higher than 99.9% for all the investigated scenarios, which indicates the superior completeness and robustness of this method. Our work promotes self-testing as a practical tool for developing quantum techniques.

Probing collective spin dynamics is a current challenge in the field of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and has important applications in material analysis and quantum information protocols. Recently, the rare-earth ion doped crystals are an attractive candidate for making long-lived quantum memory. Further enhancement of its performance would benefit from the direct knowledge on the dynamics of nuclear-spin bath in the crystal. Here we detect the collective dynamics of nuclear-spin bath located around the rare-earth ions in a crystal using dynamical decoupling spectroscopy method. From the measured spectrum, we analyze the configuration of the spin bath and characterize the flip-flop time between two correlated nuclear spins in a long time scale ($\sim $1s). Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that the rare-earth ions can serve as a magnetic quantum sensor for external magnetic field. These results suggest that the rare-earth ion is a useful probe for complex spin dynamics in solids and enable quantum sensing in the low-frequency regime, revealing promising possibilities for applications in diverse fields., Comment: The unit in Fig.4 has been corrected

The spin coherence time of $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$ which substitutes the yttrium at site 1 in Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal has been extended to 6 hours in a recent work [\textit{Nature} \textbf{517}, 177 (2015)]. To make this long-lived spin coherence useful for optical quantum memory applications, we experimentally characterize the hyperfine interaction of the optically-excited state $^5$D$_0$ using Raman-heterodyne-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. The effective spin Hamiltonians for excited and ground state are fitted based on the experimental spectra obtained in 200 magnetic fields with various orientations. To show the correctness of the fitted parameters and potential application in quantum memory protocols, we also characterize the ground-state hyperfine interaction and predict the critical magnetic field which produces the 6-hour-long coherence time. The complete energy level structure for both the $^7$F$_0$ ground state and $^5$D$_0$ excited state at the critical magnetic field are obtained. These results enable the design of quantum memory protocols and the optimization of optical pumping strategy for realization of photonic quantum memory with hour-long lifetime.

Geometric phases, generated by cyclic evolutions of quantum systems, offer an inspiring playground for advancing fundamental physics and technologies, alike. Intriguingly, the exotic statistics of anyons realised in physical systems can be interpreted as a topological version of geometric phases. However, non-Abelian statistics has not yet been demonstrated in the laboratory. Here we employ an all optical quantum system that simulates the statistical evolution of Majorana fermions. As a result we experimentally realise non-Abelian Berry phases with the topological characteristic that they are invariant under continues deformations of their control parameters. We implement a universal set of Majorana inspired gates by performing topological and non-topological evolutions and investigate their resilience against perturbative errors. The projected entangled pair states (PEPS) methods have been proved to be powerful tools to solve the strongly correlated quantum many-body problems in two-dimension. However, due to the high computational scaling with the virtual bond dimension $D$, in a practical application PEPS are often limited to rather small bond dimensions, which may not be large enough for some highly entangled systems, for instance, the frustrated systems. The optimization of the ground state using time evolution method with simple update scheme may go to a larger bond dimension. However, the accuracy of the rough approximation to the environment of the local tensors is questionable. Here, we demonstrate that combining the time evolution method with simple update, Monte Carlo sampling techniques and gradient optimization will offer an efficient method to calculate the PEPS ground state. By taking the advantages of massive parallel computing, we can study the quantum systems with larger bond dimensions up to $D$=10 without resorting to any symmetry. Benchmark tests of the method on the $J_1$-$J_2$ model give impressive accuracy compared with exact results.

By using a state of art tensor network state method, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the square lattice with frustrated next-nearest neighboring tunneling. In the hardcore limit, tunneling frustration stabilizes a peculiar half supersolid (HSS) phase with one sublattice being superfluid and the other sublattice being Mott Insulator away from half filling. In the softcore case, the model shows very rich phase diagrams above half filling, including three different types of supersolid phases depending on the interaction parameters. The considered model provides a promising route to experimentally search for novel stable supersolid state induced by frustrated tunneling in below half filling region with dipolar atoms or molecules.

Standard weak measurement (SWM) has been proved to be a useful ingredient for measuring small longitudinal phase shifts. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 033604 (2013)]. In this letter, we show that with specfic pre-coupling and postselection, destructive interference can be observed for the two conjugated variables, i.e. time and frequency, of the meter state. Using a broad band source, this conjugated destructive interference (CDI) can be observed in a regime approximately 1 attosecond, while the related spectral shift reaches hundreds of THz. This extreme sensitivity can be used to detect tiny longitudinal phase perturbation. Combined with a frequency-domain analysis, conjugated destructive interference weak measurement (CDIWM) is proved to outperform SWM by two orders of magnitude., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally show that nonlocality can be produced from single-particle contextuality by using two-particle correlations which do not violate any Bell inequality by themselves. This demonstrates that nonlocality can come from an {\em a priori} different simpler phenomenon, and connects contextuality and nonlocality, the two critical resources for, respectively, quantum computation and secure communication. The Kibble-Zurek mechanism is the paradigm to account for the nonadiabatic dynamics of a system across a continuous phase transition. Its study in the quantum regime is hindered by the requisite of ground state cooling. We report the experimental quantum simulation of critical dynamics in the transverse-field Ising model by a set of Landau-Zener crossings in pseudo-momentum space, that can be probed with high accuracy using a single trapped ion. Here we present the quantum storage of three-dimensional orbital-angular-momentum photonic entanglement in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal. The properties of the entanglement and the storage process are confirmed by the violation of the Bell-type inequality generalized to three dimensions after storage ($S=2.152\pm0.033$). The fidelity of the memory process is $0.993\pm0.002$, as determined through complete quantum process tomography in three dimensions. An assessment of the visibility of the stored weak coherent pulses in higher-dimensional spaces, demonstrates that the memory is highly reliable for 51 spatial modes. These results pave the way towards the construction of high-dimensional and multiplexed quantum repeaters based on solid-state devices. The multimode capacity of rare-earth-based optical processor goes beyond the temporal and the spectral degree of freedom, which might provide a useful tool for photonic information processing., Comment: Published version

The realization of Majorana zero modes is in the centre of intense theoretical and experimental investigations. Unfortunately, their exchange that can reveal their exotic statistics needs manipulations that are still beyond our experimental capabilities. Here we take an alternative approach. Through the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the Kitaev's chain supporting two Majorana zero modes is mapped to the spin-1/2 chain. We experimentally simulated the spin system and its evolution with a photonic quantum simulator. This allows us to probe the geometric phase, which corresponds to the exchange of two Majorana zero modes positioned at the ends of a three-site chain. Finally, we demonstrate the immunity of quantum information encoded in the Majorana zero modes against local errors through the simulator. The ability to reach a maximally entangled state from a separable one through the use of a two-qubit unitary operator is analyzed for mixed states. This extension from the known case of pure states shows that there are at least two families of gates which are able to give maximum entangling power for all values of purity. It is notable that one of this gates coincides with a maximum discording one. We give analytical proof that such gate is indeed perfect entangler at all purities and give numerical evidence for the existence of the second one. Further, we find that there are other gates, many in fact, which are perfect entanglers for a restricted range of purities. This highlights the fact that many perfect entangler gates could in principle be found if a thorough analysis of the full parameter space is performed.

Fernando Galve \emph{et al.} $[Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{110}, 010501 (2013)]$ introduced discording power for a two-qubit unitary gate to evaluate its capability to produce quantum discord, and found that a $\pi/8$ gate has maximal discording power. This work analyzes the entangling power of a two-qubit unitary gate, which reflects its ability to generate quantum entanglement in another way. An upper bound between the information gain and state reversibility of weak measurement was first developed by Y. K. Cheong and S. W. Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 150402 (2012)]. Their results are valid for arbitrary d-level quantum systems. In light of the commonly used qubit system in quantum information, a sharp tradeoff relation can be obtained. In this letter, this tradeoff relation is experimentally verified with polarization encoded single photons from a quantum dot. Furthermore, a complete traversal of weak measurement operators is realized, and the mapping to the least upper bound of this tradeoff relation is obtained. Our results complement the theoretical work and provide a universal ruler for the characterization of weak measurements.

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) captures the key physics in the non-equilibrium dynamics of second-order phase transitions, and accurately predict the density of the topological defects formed in this process. However, despite much effort, the veracity of the central prediction of KZM, i.e., the scaling of the density production and the transit rate, is still an open question. Here, we performed an experiment, based on a nine-stage optical interferometer with an overall fidelity up to 0.975$\pm$0.008, that directly supports the central prediction of KZM in quantum non-equilibrium dynamics. In addition, our work has significantly upgraded the number of stages of the optical interferometer to nine with a high fidelity, this technique can also help to push forward the linear optical quantum simulation and computation.

We study the capacitance-coupled Josephson junction array beyond the small-coupling limit. We find that, when the scale of the system is large, its Hamiltonian can be obtained without the small-coupling approximation and the system can be used to simulate strongly frustrated one-dimensional Ising spin problems. To engineer the system Hamiltonian for an ideal theoretical model, we apply a dynamical decoupling technique to eliminate undesirable couplings in the system. Using a 6-site junction array as an example, we numerically evaluate the system to show that it exhibits important characteristics of the frustrated spin model., Comment: 8 pages
