In this conversation David L. Eng and Shinhee Han sit down with the guest editor of this issue, Mary Kim Brewster, to speak informally about their 25-year collaboration, how they came to write together about the psychic lives of Asian Americans, their observations regarding the mental health and well-being of Asian Americans from their individual perspectives of the clinic and the classroom, and their recent work exploring the racial rage and racial guilt that Asian Americans are socialized to hold for others. Reflecting on the arc of their writing and clinical work Eng and Han speak to how centering the experience of the unthought Asian American subject, in the context of an untaught Asian American history, illuminates the disturbing thought of race at the heart of psychoanalytic theory and practice. This article comments on essays written by Andrew Asibong, Sandra Park, and Michelle Stephens in response to our theories about racial rage, racial guilt, and the uses of anger in Asian America. It argues that until we address the history of an unthought Asian American subject in the face of the subject of an untaught Asian American history, we will not be able to undo the dissociated knowledge constituting the disturbing thought of race at the heart of psychoanalytic theory and practice. Undoing such dissociated knowledge promises to yield both emotional literacy and racial kinship such that racial melancholia can be rendered productive and persecutory guilt can be transformed into reparative guilt. Asian Americans are conventionally described as "middle-man minorities," outside of dominant racial paradigms of White and Black, adjunct to White privilege and exempt from the brunt of systemic violence directed against Black people. Historical accounts of the in-betweenness of Asian Americans trace their origins to how Asian coolie labor has served to triangulate White capital and African slavery over the course of European modernity. If this is the material history of in-betweenness, what is the psychic corollary of the middle-man thesis? Through an analysis of the Netflix dark comedy series Beef, as well as case histories of Asian American patients and students, we argue that the psychic effects of occupying a racially intermediate position implicate an unexplored terrain of racial rage and racial guilt that Asian Americans are insistently socialized to hold on behalf of others. The Dialogue-Awareness-*Tolerance (DA*T) Model stresses dialogue, intrapersonal and interpersonal, to (a) raise personal and community awareness, (b) reengage positive moral self-sanctioning mechanisms, (c) support those who are targets of intolerance, violence or harassment or have witnessed it, (d) stabilize and deescalate crisis and conflict situations, (e) acknowledge one's vulnerability/discomfort/ambiguity in such dialogs, (f) increase tolerance to such reactions, (g) process the dissonance and (h) take action toward change. The DA*T Model incorporates and expands upon the processes of deconstructing the moment, critical incident stress debriefing, critical-dialogic intergroup dialogue and social action to make the experience manageable, safe and productive.
