Abstract

This is the second part of a two-part investigation on the method of a reliability-based seismic design. To account for large uncertainties in structural design under seismic load, a method of calibration of the design parameters in seismic codes is proposed based on the consideration of satisfactory performance under future earthquakes in terms of reliability. The calibration is carried out by a minimization of the difference between target and actual reliabilities against serviceability and ultimate limit states over a given period of time. The response surface method (RSM) in conjunction with a central composite design is used to expedite the minimization solution process. To reduce the computational effort required for reliability evaluation under seismic loads, the equivalent nonlinear system (ENS) developed in part 1 is used for dynamic-response analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) inelastic structures. Numerical examples on the calibration of the earthquake load factor and drift limit for selected target limit-state probabilities are given. Parametric studies are also carried out to examine the dependence of these parameters on the target reliability levels against both serviceability and ultimate limit states.

Abstract

This is the first part of a two-part investigation on the method of reliability-based seismic design. In reliability analysis and reliability-based design under stochastic loads such as seismic excitations, repeated time-history solutions of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) inelastic structures are often required, which can become computationally expensive. To alleviate this difficulty, an approximate method is developed by replacing the MDOF system with a simple equivalent nonlinear system (ENS) that retains the dynamic characteristics of the first two modes and the global yielding behavior of the system. The equivalence is achieved by the use of two empirical response modification factors based on regression analyses of responses to a large number of actual ground accelerations recorded in past earthquakes. Numerical examples on reliability analysis of the special moment resistant space frame (SMRSF) under seismic excitations are given. The computational advantage and accuracy of the method are demonstrated.

Abstract

The valence states and electronic structures of transition-metal ions in spinel [Fe.sub.1-x][Cu.sub.x] [Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4] (0.1 [less than or equal to] x [less than or equal to] 0.5) have been investigated by using scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), photoemission spectroscopy (PES), soft-X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The experimental data have been compared to the calculated density of states (DOS). It is found that the valence states of Cr and Cu ions are nearly trivalent ([Cr.sup.3+]) and monovalent ([Cu.sup.+]), respectively. The Fe 2p XAS spectra of [Fe.sub.1-x][Cu.sub.2][Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4] are very similar to that of Fe metal, indicating that Fe 3d states are strongly hybridized to S 3p states. The XMCD measurements for Fe, Cr, and Cu 2p states show evidence that the magnetic moments of Cr ions are antiparallel to those of Fe ions and that Cu ions are weakly polarized parallel to Fe ions. Valence-band PES reveals that Cr 3d states are located at ~ -1.5 eV, while Fe 3d states are very broad, in agreement with the calculated DOS. This study indicates that the minority-spin [e.sub.g] states of Fe 3d electrons are located very close to EF, suggesting that the hybridized Fe [e.sub.g]-S 3p states near EF play an important role in determining the transport properties of [Fe.sub.1]-x [Cu.sub.x[Cr.sub.2][S.sub.4] for x [less than oe equal to] 0.5. Index Terms--Fe[Cr.sub.2][S.sub.4], [Fe.sub.0.5][Cu.sub.0.5][Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4], photoemission spectroscopy (PES), scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), spinel, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD).

Abstract

Embolization is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that deliberately blocks a blood vessel. Although several embolic particles have been commercialized, their much wider applications have been hampered owing mainly to particle size variation and uncontrollable degradation kinetics. Herein we introduce a microfluidic approach to fabricate highly monodisperse gelatin microparticles (GMPs) with a microshell structure. For this purpose, we fabricate uniform gelatin emulsion precursors using a microfluidic technique and consecutively cross-link them by inbound diffusion of glutaraldehyde from the oil continuous phase to the suspending gelatin precursor droplets. A model micromechanic study, carried out in an artificial blood vessel, demonstrates that the extraordinary degradation kinetics of the GMPs, which stems from the microshell structure, enables controlled rupturing while exhibiting drug release under temporary chemoembolic conditions.

Abstract

Electronic structures of Fe[Cr.sub.2][X.sub.4] (X = S and Se) are examined by using the soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Fe and Cr 2p XMCD study has provided evidence for the antiparallel alignment between Cr and Fe spins and the spin hybridization between the Fe 3d and X p electrons.
