1. Influence of Socio-economic Factors on the Use of Information Dissemination Channels among Groundnut Farmers in Northwest Nigeria

Abstract

The study assessed the influence of socio-economic factors in the use of information dissemination channels among groundnut farmers in Northwest Nigeria. The research used primary data collected from 349 smallholder groundnut growers. Chi-squared was used in data analysis. The results indicated that farmers’ place of residence (X2 =169.417, df=15) and sex (X2 =14.049, df=5) had a significant association with the farm visit extension pieces of advice. Also, significant associations were found between respondents’ place of residence (X2 = 169.417, df=15), sex (X2 =14.049, df=5) and income (X2 = 30.956, df= 15) with the use of radio. Furthermore, significant associations were found between respondents’ place of residence (X2 =103.417, df=15), sex (X2 =13.777, df=5) and income (X2 =22.973, df= 15) with the use of mobile phones. The article concludes that farmers’ place of residence, sex and income have a significant effect on their preference to the use of extension visits, radio and mobile phone technology transfer mechanisms in the study areas. It is recommended for constant training and retraining of extension workers to enhance their information delivery skills. Also, government and other stakeholders should give financial and logistic support to the extension workers to make use of diversified information communication channels.

4. The Effects of Study Skills Training on Qualitative Academic Achievement among Students

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of study skills training on the qualitative academic achievement of girl high school students. This study was conducted by using an experimental design with pretest, posttest, and follow-up with the control group. The participants were 32 students from girl high school students of Tehran which were selected by cluster random sampling from girl high schools and then randomly assigned into control and experimental groups (Each group consisted of 16 students). The instruments used were Dortaj Qualitative Academic Achievement Questionnaire and Motevalli Study Skills Training Module. The experimental group received 8 sessions of psycho-educational group therapy and the control group did not receive any training. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was utilized for the analysis of data. Results revealed that there was a significant increase in qualitative academic achievement between pretest with post-test and follow-up among the experimental group. Moreover, there was a significant increase in qualitative academic achievement between post-test and follow-up in the experimental group with the control group. Additionally, the results showed that there is a significant increase in self-efficacy, planning, and motivation and also a significant decrease in emotional effects and lack of outcome control. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that on the basis of deficit theory using learning and study skills training can lead to enhance student's skills to improve qualitative academic achievement. Further studies are required to examine whether exposing students to study skills training programs can lead them to enhance their qualitative academic achievement.

6. Predicting Career Adaptability of Fresh Graduates through Personal Factors

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine the contribution of personal factors towards career adaptability among fresh graduates who had been employed for less than two years. This cohort is considered as entry-level employees in organisations. Several dimensions of personal factors focussed in this study were self-esteem, conscientiousness, spiritual intelligence and social support. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a quantitative approach using a cross-sectional survey. This study sample comprised fresh graduate employees (n = 423) from four Malaysian public universities. Findings: The regression model fitted the data; the personal factors significantly predicted fresh graduates' career adaptability, F (4,418) = 31.982, p < 0.001. Conscientiousness showed the highest contribution compared to other variables, with social support being the lowest. Practical implications: Owing to challenges faced by fresh graduates as entry-level employees, continuous career adaptation in the working environment is crucial for achieving satisfaction and success in life. All stakeholders, especially in higher education institutions, play an important role in inculcating the requisite personal traits in undergraduates to enhance their career adaptability upon joining the job market. Originality/value: This study was conducted with fresh graduates as entry-level employees in Malaysia. It is hoped that the findings of this study would provide a better understanding of the impact of personal factors on career adaptability of fresh graduates in Malaysia so that the stakeholders involved could act accordingly to help fresh graduates enter the job market with the confidence to adapt to changes at the workplace.

Abstract

Introduction: Overweight and obesity among children may have psychological consequences, with potentially lasting effects on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The aims of this study were to compare HRQOL across weight status among children and to determine the factors influencing HRQOL among children with overweight and obesity. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved school children aged 9–16 years that were recruited from eight randomly selected primary and secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur. The validated Malay version of Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) was used to measure HRQOL. Complex sample general linear model was used to determine the significant factors associated with HRQOL among children with overweight and obesity. Results: From 928 students, 41.2% (n = 375) of them had either overweight or obesity. Children with obesity reported lower overall HRQOL, physical functioning, social functioning, and psychosocial health summary, compared to normal weight children. In the final model, children with obesity had significantly lower HRQOL and physical functioning compared to children who were overweight, while those who lived with a single parent reported poorer HRQOL compared to children who lived with both parents. Children with history of being bullied had lower HRQOL and psychosocial health. Whereas those with lower self-esteem reported significantly lower scores in all three domains. Conclusion: Overweight and obesity have negative impacts on HRQOL of children. Among children with overweight and obesity, factors such as degree of obesity, family structure, history of being bullied, and self-esteem were found to be significantly associated with HRQOL. Abstract

The application of polymer blends such as epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in immobilizing titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts has enticed many researchers. However, the presence of polymer limits the photocatalytic activity by hindering the surface‐active site of the immobilized TiO2. In this study, photoetching treatment with the presence of dye was successfully applied on the immobilized TiO2/ENR/PVC (TEP) to enhance the photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Priorly, a dip coating technique was used to immobilize the TEP. The dye photoetching treatment was performed for several cycles to determine the reusability of the immobilized TEP. Furthermore, it demonstrated a significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity at which the best performance with the pseudo‐first‐order rate constant, k value of 0.1483 min−1 at the 13th cycle. The nonetched, photoetched TEP without dye and dye photoetched TEP have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and PEC. It is believed that the dye photoetched TEP will produce a good photocatalytic activity and PEC performance due to the presence of dye stimulant during the photoetching treatment. Abstract

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 9 calls for resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation. Echoing this vision, construction industries have prioritised resilient structure and sustainable design while optimising economic and wealth growth. The use of steel fibre (SteFib) as scattered reinforcement in building design and construction had been explored. SteFib has been designed as reinforcement in the structural components of the building namely, raft foundation, floor and roof slabs, wall panel and column. Prototype of an Industrialised Building System (IBS) with two (2) bedrooms, one (1) living area and linked to a small kitchen was constructed using hook ended SteFib, 60 mm long and 0.7 mm in diameter mixed in grade 40 concrete. The prototype has successfully proven that the SteFib is able to stand as fully reinforced structure through this tiny home project. The structural performance analysed and verified using Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis. The analysis results show that steel fibre house has higher stress, forces and moment compared with normal concrete house.

14. Quality of Working Life and Career Engagement of Cancer Survivors: The Mediating Role of Effect of Disease and Treatment

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims at investigating the relationship between the quality of working life and career engagement of cancer survivors and the mediating role of the effect of disease and treatment. Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 cancer survivors in Malaysia. The participants, aged between 18 and 40, were Malaysian citizens undergoing follow-up sessions at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital and the National Cancer Institute of Malaysia. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression analysis that implemented Baron and Kenny's method for mediation were used for analyses. Findings: The effect of treatment and disease was found to significantly mediate the relationship between quality of work-life and career engagement of cancer survivors. Research limitations/implications: The instrument for this study was a self-reported questionnaire, with participants responding to specific items on a five-point Likert scale under the supervision of the researchers. As results from the survey were subjective in nature, the bias in the participants could not be eliminated completely. This study was also limited to the two main parameters, namely, quality of working life and career engagement and a mediator, namely, effects of the disease and treatment. Moreover, as the survey was conducted in only two hospitals in the Klang Valley area, the results cannot be generalized to other cancer survivors in other regions of Malaysia. Practical implications: The results of this study indicated that the mediating role of the effects of disease and treatment on the relationship of the quality of working life subscales with career engagement. Practical implications, cancer survivor consciousness of the effects of disease and treatment is very important and should be addressed and could be notable to improve the quality of working life. Originality/value: This study gives valuable insight to managers and practitioners by investigating the relationship between the quality of working life and career engagement and mediates by the effects of disease and treatment. The findings highlight the challenges cancer survivors face on their return to working life. The findings also highlight the need for management to take steps to help cancer survivors cope with career engagement for better work performance.

20. Alternative Splicing (AS) and Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) programming in cellular model of breast cancer

Abstract

It is increasingly evident that alternative pre-mRNA splicing events (AS) play a profound role in tumor progression and metastasis, frequently via the activation of cellular processes that can trigger epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program in the cells. Alterations in mRNA splicing pattern can arise from altered expression of splicing factors as well as interactions with cancer-related signal transductions. This study investigated the potential role of key hormones, estrogen and CRH, in the regulation of pre-mRNA splicing mechanism, and the molecular pathways mediating CRH actions in promoting EMT in ER (+) MCF7 and ER (-) SKBR3 breast cancer cell line. Estrogen signaling has been reported to be involved in the alternative splicing of specific set of genes, and this study found that estrogen can induce the phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of a key splicing kinase, SRPK1 via Akt dependent pathway, and thus triggers the production of CD44s splice variant. Additionally, CRH regulates numerous protein kinases including Akt, therefore the effects of CRH on SRPK1 status was also investigated. In this study, CRH was shown to modulate SRPK1 activity via similar pathway as E2 did in MCF7 cells, resulted in the accumulation of CD44v6 mRNA isoform. Apparently, while this effect of CRH on SRPK1 was not seen in SKBR3 cells, increased expression of CD44v6 mRNA was detected, suggesting that CRH exerted its effects via different pathways in SKBR3 cells. Furthermore, increased level of CD44 splice variant, particularly CD44v6 in the stimulated cells positively correlated with EMT gene expression Twist/Snail as well as the migration and invasion properties of the cells. Additionally, EMT gene profiling analysis revealed that in addition to Twist and Snail, CRH was able to drive the transcription of several other prominent EMT markers such as VIM, TGFB1/2, NOTCH1, MMP9 and Wnt5A when either Akt or SRPK1 kinase was inhibited in the cells, thus signifying the potential convergence of CRH signaling pathway in the MCF7 cells. Given that the role and the mechanism of E2 and CRH actions in the progression of breast cancer are still not fully elucidated, the link between these two key hormones with alternative splicing events and the activation of EMT in ER+ cells demonstrated in this project may contribute considerably to the current understanding of breast cancer development and progression.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti is responsible for transmitting various mosquito-borne diseases. Recently, there have been concerns about the negative impacts of the insecticides used in vector control including insecticide resistance development in the mosquito population. These circumstances lead to efforts to develop other strategies for controlling mosquito vectors. As technology in nanoparticles advances, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have the potential as the alternative for chemical pesticides for mosquito larvicides due to their optical properties and widespread usage in different industries. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles towards Ae. aegypti larvae and to examine the physiologies of Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae treated with ZnO nanoparticles at LC50 level. Toxicity bioassays were carried out to determine LC50 and LC90 values. The larvae surface and midgut treated with LC50 ZnO were examined using the Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The LC50 and LC90 concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles after 4 hr of direct UV exposure against Ae. aegypti larvae were 49.141 mg/L and 64.195 mg/L, respectively. After exposure to ZnO nanoparticles, Ae. aegypti larvae showed morphological abnormalities, including distorted and shrunk body parts as well as midgut rupture. Overall, the findings suggest that ZnO nanoparticles have the potential to replace chemical pesticides as a means of reducing the populations of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, is an insect pest that can pose severe harm to stored grains. Rice weevils, both adults and larvae, cause significant economic losses because they can infest a wide range of plants and stored goods. Nanoparticle insecticides are created and studied to replace the overly-used synthetic chemical insecticides. The purpose of this study is to investigate the susceptibility of several commercialized rice brands towards S. oryzae infestation and to assess the toxicity of different types of zinc oxide (ZnO) against S. oryzae. The study involved twelve rice brands, and S. oryzae infestation rates were observed in the laboratory for 17 weeks. The infestation rates were obtained at the end of the observation period. To obtain the required dosages of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8% (w/w), four different concentrations of each type of ZnO nanoparticle that had undergone various reactivity modifications were mixed with rice for bioassays test. S. oryzae has been proven to be susceptible to almost all commercialized rice brands studied in this research. Based on the data, it can be concluded that the ZnO nanoparticle modified with gamma-ray is the most effective at controlling S. oryzae, as 100% mortality was seen after three days of treatment at concentrations between 0.4 to 0.08% (w/w). The slow emergence of pests in monitored rice brands is attributed to the protectants and their residue, which work by eradicating eggs and adults that have consumed the grain. Zinc oxide type 7A is the most toxic towards S. oryzae because of its exposure to gamma-ray which has the highest energy compared to neutron and beta rays. Concerning corporate management's rapid increase in debt issuance, alternative financing has been widely introduced in the financial market to minimize the use of debt instruments. According to that, debt-based financing was a huge contributor to the global economic collapse. Therefore, as a means of achieving financial sustainability, this paper unleashes the possibility of equity-based financing offered by a number of sectors as an alternative to debt. To achieve this objective, this paper examines the differences in credit risk exposure between debt-based and equity-based financing for a number of Malaysian sectors within the phase of GFC until COVID-19. Equity-based financing's ability to advance financial sustainability for companies and investors was investigated using the Monte Carlo simulation approach. Through a simulation using sectorial price index data, given that the return to investors is contingent upon the firm's performance, this paper demonstrates that equity-based financing can mitigate credit risk exposure for firms across different sectors. The results of zero default exposure recorded by all sectors during the crisis phase show that equity-based financing is significant in fostering financial sustainability for firms and investors. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent of multiscale currency risk using wavelet analysis for 9 healthcare firms listed in the Bursa Malaysia. The study is motivated from the dynamic nature of foreign exchange rate risk across different time horizons. The highlight on the Malaysian healthcare sector is attributable to its vigorous trading in healthcare goods and services around the globe. The study adopts Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT) approach to decompose a given data series into various time intervals from January 2019 to December 2022. The study indicates that exchange risk concentration is non-monotonic from low to high time scale. Specifically, firm's profitability becomes more susceptible to changes in foreign currency as time horizon expands. Therefore, firm managers and investors should factor in the length of transactions in foreign exchange risk assessment for optimal hedging strategies given the noticeable time scale effect on currency risk. Abstract

Objectives: Dental behaviour support (DBS) describes all specific techniques practiced to support patients in their experience of professional oral healthcare. DBS is roughly synonymous with behaviour management, which is an outdated concept. There is no agreed terminology to specify the techniques used to support patients who receive dental care. This lack of specificity may lead to imprecision in describing, understanding, teaching, evaluating and implementing behaviour support techniques in dentistry. Therefore, this e-Delphi study aimed to develop a list of agreed labels and descriptions of DBS techniques used in dentistry and sort them according to underlying principles of behaviour. Methods: Following a registered protocol, a modified e-Delphi study was applied over two rounds with a final consensus meeting. The threshold of consensus was set a priori at 75%. Agreed techniques were then categorized by four coders, according to behavioural learning theory, to sort techniques according to their mechanism of action. Results: The panel (n = 35) agreed on 42 DBS techniques from a total of 63 candidate labels and descriptions. Complete agreement was achieved regarding all labels and descriptions, while agreement was not achieved regarding distinctiveness for 17 techniques. In exploring underlying principles of learning, it became clear that multiple and differing principles may apply depending on the specific context and procedure in which the technique may be applied. Discussion: Experts agreed on what each DBS technique is, what label to use, and their description, but were less likely to agree on what distinguishes one technique from another. All techniques were describable but not comprehensively categorizable according to principles of learning. While objective consistency was not attained, greater clarity and consistency now exists. The global coronavirus pandemic sparked widespread lockdowns and travel restrictions, leading to a significant economic downturn. However, the subsequent development of vaccines prompted governments to ease restrictions and explore technology-driven strategies for tourism revival, including the use of mobile applications and augmented reality (AR). In light of the progress of AR, this study addresses the lack of AR applications for promoting tourism in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand and Malaysia, where language barriers hinder cross-cultural communication. Therefore, this study aims to develop a content-specific AR mobile application to enhance tourists' exploration of cultural heritage and facilitate communication in these multicultural and Islamic-influenced regions. This study adopts the design thinking approach for a solution-based methodology. The developed AR mobile application aims to enhance the tourist experience by providing immersive and informative content specific to the culture and heritage. The prototype undergoes a heuristic evaluation by ten experts in human-computer interaction (HCI). The results show a positive consensus on many aspects, highlighting the potential of the AR mobile application to promote culture and heritage effectively. Introduction: Nursing is a physically demanding profession; they must be in good physical condition to do the physical tasks such as lifting or positioning the patient. Studies on nurses were mostly carried out in public sectors in Malaysia and investigation among nurses in private sector is limited. Even though there are investigations on physical activity level with quality of life, however, the quality of life explored were general. Therefore, the study aims to determine the association between physical activity (PA) and quality of working life (QoWL) among nurses working in private hospitals. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The nurses were recruited by using the snowball sampling method during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study involved 64 nurses (61 female and three male) in private hospitals. Using Google Form, sociodemographic data, physical activity (PA), and quality of the working life (QoWL) were gathered online and analysed using SPSS version 22. PA was evaluated using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), whereas QoWL was measured for the Work-Related Quality of Life Scale (WRQoL). Spearman Correlation, the Mann-Whitney Test, and the Kruskal-Wallis Test were applied to determine PA and QoWL. Results: According to the findings, the WRQoL score and age had a significant correlation (p<0.05). The PA was also shown to have a significant on two of the six elements of the WRQoL scale, which represent the control at work and stress at work. The association between physical activity and general well-being also was found significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study identified private nurses in Malaysia were physically active and having relatively good quality of working life.
