46. Marine Biotoxin Profile and Karenia selliformisand Alexandrium minitumOccurrence in Boughrara Lagoon During the Last Decade

Abstract

As part of the routine control of the Tunisian network for the monitoring of the most problematic microalgae species Karenia selliformisand Alexandrium minutumand for the study of hydrophilic and lipophilic marine biotoxin profiles, clams and seawater samples from Boughrara lagoon were analysed during the past decade. The results showed that the abundance of Karenia selliformisand Alexandrium minutumin the Boughrara lagoon exhibited significant variability at annual scales. K. selliformiswas recorded in all sampling years with interannual variability. Among the nine sampled years, 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2017 were, respectively, the most significant in terms of mean abundance (2.85, 2.42, 1.38, 1.69) ∙ 105cells L–1. A. minutumspecies were observed in the water column during all investigated years except in 2013, 2016 and 2017, but in low concentrations compared to K. selliformis(≤ 7.4 ∙ 102cells L–1). Using LC-FLD, traces of paralytic toxins (C1 and GTX-2) were detected in some clam samples. Their concentrations were largely below the regulatory limit. For the first time, N-sulfocarbamoyl gonyautoxin-2 (C-1) and gonyautoxin 2 (GTX-2) were detected in some clam samples from this region. LC-MS/MS analysis confirmed the presence of gymnodimines in some samples. The main peak corresponds to the GYM-A with high concentrations generally above 1 mg kg–1of clams meat, which confirms the persistence of this neurotoxin in Boughrara lagoon.

Abstract

The phytochemical and biological properties of Ononis alba Poir L. (Fabaceae) were investigated for the first time in this study. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts was analysed by GC-MS. The phenolic contents of extracts obtained with different solvents were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the antioxidant activity was evaluated through DPPH and CUPRAC methods. The inhibitory potential of these extracts was evaluated on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, whereas the antimicrobial effect was verified against some bacteria and fungi through the well diffusion method. Ketones and carboxylic acids were the main essential oil constituents. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as the best antioxidant capacity were noticed on the n-butanol extract. All the extracts showed a greater efficiency than acarbose in the inhibition of α-amylase. On the other hand, they demonstrated a mild inhibition effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Fusarium oxysporum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present paper reports on a twenty six year monitoring of the diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Trichodesmium erythraeum in the Gulf of Gabes associated with environmental parameters and meteorological variables. Trichodesmium erythraeum blooms were not recurrent all years and were observed on average 2.11 times per year over the period between 1988 and 2013. Blooms were associated with temperature exceeding 24 °C and wind speed generally less than 5 m s −1 . Trichodesmium erythraeum reached very high densities fluctuating between 0.12×10 6 and 720×10 6 trichomes dm −3 . The wind speed during dust events and the number of dust days per year were highly correlated to Trichodesmium abundances. Two wind regimes during dust events were identified. The South -South East direction crossing the Tunisian desert generated the most intensive blooms. High dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations (2−14.6 µM) and orthophosphate concentrations (0.05–2.79 µM) were observed during bloom events leading to high N/P ratio well above the Redfield ratio and fluctuating linearly as function of Trichodesmium abundance. The anomalous N/P ratio could result from Trichodesmium erythraeum biological N 2 fixation and/or the contribution of atmospheric deposition.

Abstract

Objective: To test the response of the epiphyte community structure and biomass of the Posidonia oceanica (P. oceanica) leaves to natural disturbance. Methods: Sampling of P. oceanica was carried in winter and summer on three sites in Kuriate Islands (western coast of Tunisia) subject to different environments disturbances. Shoots of P. oceanica were preserved in seawater-formalin (5%) solution for macro-epiphytes species identification in the laboratory. The samples were examined for leaf surface per shoot and the coverage (expressed as a percentage of leaf surface) of each morphological group, then carefully scraped with a razor blade. Epiphytes and scraped leaves were oven-dried at 60 °C for 48 h. Biomass was expressed as g dry weight/shoot. Results: The biomass and the percentage cover of macro-epiphytic leaves showed seasonal variation. The highest values of epiphytic leaves were detected in summer whereas the lowest values were registered during winter. ANOVA showed that Kuriate Islands functioned as a single ecosystem in terms assemblage of macro-epiphytic leaves since no significant variation was detected for biomass and percentage cover at the scale site. Our study showed that natural disturbance had no effect on the assemblage distribution and the biomass of macro-epiphyte on the leaves of P. oceanica between the scales of site, whereas variability at the smallest scale was detected. ANOVA showed that exposure to wind and current had no effect on the biomass of macro-epiphytes leaves. Conclusions: Biomass and assemblages of macro-epiphytic leaves of P. oceanica were high in summer and homogenous between all sites investigated. Natural disturbances such as exposure to wind have no effect on the distribution and the biomass of epiphytes on the shallow meadow.
