In this study, MNPs were functionalized with pyrocatechol (CAT), pyrogallol (GAL), caffeic acid (CAF), and nitrodopamine (NDA) at pH 8 and pH 11. The functionalization of the MNPs was successful, except in the case of NDA at pH 11. The thermogravimetric analyses indicated that the surface concentration of the catechols was between 1.5 and 3.6 molecules/nm2. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) of the functionalized MNPs were higher than the starting material. XPS analyses showed only the presence of Fe(III) ions on the surface, thus refuting the idea of the Fe being reduced and magnetite being formed on the surfaces of the MNPs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for two modes of adsorption of CAT onto two model surfaces: plain and adsorption via condensation. The total magnetization of both adsorption modes remained the same, indicating that the adsorption of the catechols does not affect the Ms. The analyses of the size and the size distribution showed an increase in the average size of the MNPs during the functionalization process. This increase in the average size of the MNPs and the reduction in the fraction of the smallest (i.e., <10 nm) MNPs explained the increase in the Ms values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we present the synthesis of two analogues of a lactic acid derivative selectively deuterated on phenyl and biphenyl moieties together with a detailed investigation of their properties within the Twist Grain Boundary smectic A* (TGBA*), the ferroelectric Smectic C* (SmC*) and the crystal E phases. The main structural features of the two liquid crystalline phases, namely TGBA* and SmC* phases, were determined by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, electro-optical techniques, Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and 2H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (2H NMR) measurements. Preliminary results from Neutron Spin-Echo (NSE) spectroscopy, a technique rarely applied to study chiral liquid crystalline materials, are reported. The effect of the external magnetic field on the supramolecular structure of the ferroelectric phase was studied by means of 2H-NMR experiments under different external magnetic fields. The supramolecular and orientational ordering properties of this ferroelectric lactic acid derivative and its deuterated homologues are discussed in the frame of actual knowledge in the field of ferroelectric liquid crystal materials. This is a brief overview on recent studies on liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) based on polysiloxane chain, in the form of monodomain films, selectively 2H-labeled in different parts of the LCE samples, i.e. on the crosslinker or mesogenic units. 2H NMR spectroscopic techniques were used to measure the temperature dependence of the quadrupolar splittings, line widths and relaxation times, T1 and T2. From these data, several information about the orientational order parameter, S, of various LCE fragments, thermodynamic features of the isotropic-nematic transition and main motional processes could be generalized for this type of elastomers. Solid State 2H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was applied to the structural and orientational studies of a selectively labelled ‘de Vries’ liquid crystal compound. Measurements were performed at five values of the magnetic field, ranging from 4.70 to 18.80 T. The trend of the orientational order S and tilt angle θ of the 2H-labeled moiety in the SmA and SmC* phases at different magnetic fields confirms previous results and allows us to better characterize the SmA-SmC* transition. A liquid crystalline compound with the azo group in the molecular core and three lactic acid units in the chiral chain (n = 3) was synthesised and its mesomorphic properties established. Spontaneous polarisation and tilt angle were determined in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic C phases. Dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range of 1 Hz-10 MHz was performed within the temperature range of smectic phases showing the characteristic modes in each phase. Small-angle X-ray diffraction was performed and temperature dependences of layer spacing value calculated. Comparison with previously studied compounds with one (n = 1) and two lactate units (n = 2) is presented to establish the effect of lactate unit number on the liquid crystalline properties. Novel lactic acid derivatives containing an azo group in their molecular core have been synthesised and their mesomorphic properties established. Compounds with a short aliphatic non-chiral chain exhibited the SmA* phase and ferroelectric (FE) SmC* phase. The monotropic antiferroelectric (AF) phase was found in the homologues with a longer terminal chain. Spontaneous polarisation and tilt angle were measured for the FE and AF phases. Dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 1 Hz-10 MHz was carried out and dielectric properties established within the temperature range of the smectic phases. Two high frequency modes were detected in the AF phase. Small-angle X-ray measurements were conducted, and the temperature dependence of layer spacing values is established and discussed.
