Abstract

Web semantic access in specific domains calls for specialized search engines with enhanced semantic querying and indexing capacities, which pertain both to information retrieval (IR) and to information extraction (IE). A rich linguistic analysis is required either to identify the relevant semantic units to index and weight them according to linguistic specific statistical distribution, or as the basis of an information extraction process. Recent developments make Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques reliable enough to process large collections of documents and to enrich them with semantic annotations. This paper focuses on the design and the development of a text processing platform, Ogmios, which has been developed in the ALVIS project. The Ogmios platform exploits existing NLP modules and resources, which may be tuned to specific domains and produces linguistically annotated documents. We show how the three constraints of genericity, domain semantic awareness and performance can be handled all together.

Abstract

The paper describes the ALVIS annotation format designed for the indexing of large collections of documents in topic-specific search engines. This paper is exemplified on the biological domain and on MedLine abstracts, as developing a specialized search engine for biologists is one of the ALVIS case studies. The ALVIS principle for linguistic annotations is based on existing works and standard propositions. We made the choice of stand-off annotations rather than inserted mark-up. Annotations are encoded as XML elements which form the linguistic subsection of the document record.

15. Improving Term Extraction with Terminological Resources

Abstract

Studies of different term extractors on a corpus of the biomedical domain revealed decreasing performances when applied to highly technical texts. The difficulty or impossibility of customising them to new domains is an additional limitation. In this paper, we propose to use external terminologies to influence generic linguistic data in order to augment the quality of the extraction. The tool we implemented exploits testified terms at different steps of the process: chunking, parsing and extraction of term candidates. Experiments reported here show that, using this method, more term candidates can be acquired with a higher level of reliability. We further describe the extraction process involving endogenous disambiguation implemented in the term extractor YaTeA.

Abstract

International audience; Modal verbs in English communicate delicate shades of meaning, there being a large range of verbs both on the necessity side (must, have to, should, ought to, need, need to) and the possibility side (can, may, could, might, be able to). They therefore constitute excellent test ground to apply and compare different methodologies that can lay bare the factors that drive the speaker’s choice of modal verb. This book is not merely concerned with a purely grammatical description of the use of modal verbs, but aims at advancing our understanding of lexical and grammatical units in general and of linguistic methodologies to explore these. It thus involves a genuine effort to compare, assess and combine a variety of approaches. It complements the leading descriptive qualitative work on modal verbs by testing a diverse range of quantitative methods, while not ignoring qualitative issues pertaining to the semantics-pragmatics interface. Starting from a critical assessment of what constitutes the meaning of modal verbs, different types of empirical studies (usage-based, data-driven and experimental), drawing considerably on the same data sets, shows how method triangulation can contribute to an enhanced understanding. Due attention is also given to individual variation as well as the degree to which modals can predict L2 proficiency level.

National audience; Les modèles de langue prodonds encodent les propriétés linguistiques et sont utilisés comme entrée pour des modèles plus spécifiques. Utiliser leurs représentations de mots telles quelles pour des domaines peu dotés se révèle être moins efficace. De plus, ces modèles négligent souvent les informations globales sur le vocabulaire au profit d’une plus forte dépendance à l’attention. Nous considérons que ces informations influent sur les résultats des tâches en aval. Leur combinaison avec les représentations contextuelles est effectuée à l’aide de réseaux de neurones à base de graphes. Nous montrons que l’utilité de cette combinaison qui surpassent les performances de baselines.

Abstract

L’édition 2020 du défi fouille de texte (DEFT) a proposé deux tâches autour de la similarité textuelle et une tâche d’extraction d’information. La première tâche vise à identifier le degré de similarité entre paires de phrases sur une échelle de 0 (le moins similaire) à 5 (le plus similaire). Les résultats varient de 0,65 à 0,82 d’EDRM. La deuxième tâche consiste à déterminer la phrase la plus proche d’une phrase source parmi trois phrases cibles fournies, avec des résultats très élevés, variant de 0,94 à 0,99 de précision. Ces deux tâches reposent sur un corpus du domaine général et de santé. La troisième tâche propose d’extraire dix catégories d’informations du domaine médical depuis le corpus de cas cliniques de DEFT 2019. Les résultats varient de 0,07 à 0,66 de F-mesure globale pour la sous-tâche des pathologies et signes ou symptômes, et de 0,14 à 0,76 pour la sous-tâche sur huit catégories médicales. Les méthodes utilisées reposent sur des CRF et des réseaux de neurones.
