Abstract

The chromium(II) orthophosphate {\alpha}-Cr3(PO4)2 is a weak ferrimagnet with the Curie temperature TC = 29 K confirmed by a \lambda-type peak in specific heat. Dominant antiferromagnetic interactions in this system are characterized by the Weiss temperature {\Theta} = - 96 K, indicating an intermediate frustration ratio |{\Theta}|/TC ~ 3. In its magnetically ordered states {\alpha}-Cr3(PO4)2 exhibits a remarkable sequence of temperature-induced magnetization reversals sensitive to the protocol of measurements, i.e. either field-cooled or zero-field-cooled regimes. The reduction of the effective magnetic moment 4.5 {\mu}B/Cr2+, as compared to the spin-only moment 4.9 {\mu}B/Cr2+, cannot be ascribed to the occurence of the low-spin state in any crystallographic site of the Jahn-Teller active 3d4 Cr2+ ions. X-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge indicate divalent chromium and unravel the high-spin state of these ions at the L2,3-edges. Weak ferrimagnetism and multiple magnetization reversal phenomena seen in this compound could be ascribed to incomplete cancellation and distortion of partial spontaneous magnetization functions of Cr2+ in its six crystallographically inequivalent positions., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

The benefits of physical activity, including decreased risk for heart disease and diabetes as well as improved body image and self-esteem, far outweigh the risks. However, a select population of adolescent and young adult females may experience symptoms related to the female athlete triad (Triad), which refers to the interrelatedness of energy availability, menstrual function, and bone mineral density (BMD). These conditions often manifest clinically as disordered eating behaviors, menstrual irregularity, and stress fractures; an individual may suffer from 1 or all of the Triad components simultaneously. Because of the complex nature of the Triad, treatment is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Team members often include a physician, psychologist or psychiatrist, nutritionist or dietitian, physical therapist, athletic trainer, coach, family members, and most importantly, the patient. A thorough physical examination by a primary care physician is essential to identify all organs/systems that may be impacted by Triad-related conditions. Laboratory tests, assessment of bone density, nutritional assessment, and behavior health evaluation guide the management of the female athlete with Triad-related conditions. Treatment of the Triad includes adequate caloric consumption to restore a positive energy balance; this is often the first step in successful management of the Triad. In addition, determining the cause of menstrual dysfunction (MD) and resumption of menses is very important. Nonpharmacologic interventions are the first choice; pharmacologic treatment for MD is reserved only for those patients with symptoms of estrogen deficiency or infertility. Lastly, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is critical for lifelong bone health. For this review, a comprehensive search of relevant databases from the earliest dates to July 2016 was performed. Keywords, including female athlete triad, adolescent female athlete, disordered eating, eating disorder, low energy availability, relative energy deficit, anorexia, bulimia, menstrual dysfunction, amenorrhea, oligoamenorrhea, bone mineral density, osteopenia, osteoporosis, stress fracture, and stress reaction, were utilized to search for relevant articles. Articles that directly addressed assessment and management of any 1 or all of the Triad components were included in this comprehensive review. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide the reader with the latest terms used to define the components of the female athlete triad, to discuss examination and diagnosis of the Triad, and lastly, to provide the reader with the latest evidence to successfully implement a multidisciplinary treatment approach when providing care for the adolescent female athlete who may be suffering from Triad-related components. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Development and progression of heart failure (HF) involve endothelial and myocardial dysfunction as well as a dysregulation of the nitric oxide - soluble guanylyl cyclase - cyclic guanosine monophosphate (NO-sGC-cGMP) signalling pathway. Recently, we reported that the sGC stimulator riociguat (RIO) has beneficial effects on cardiac remodelling and progression of HF in response to chronic pressure overload. Here, we examined if these favourable RIO effects are also reflected in alterations of the myocardial proteome and microRNA profiles. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Male C57BL/6N mice underwent transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and sham operated mice served as controls. TAC and sham animals were randomised and treated with either RIO or vehicle for five weeks, starting three weeks post-surgery when cardiac hypertrophy was established. Afterwards we performed mass spectrometric proteome analyses and microRNA sequencing of proteins and RNAs, respectively, isolated from left ventricles (LV). KEY RESULTS: TAC-induced changes of the LV proteome were significantly reduced by RIO treatment. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that RIO improved TAC-induced cardiovascular disease related pathways, metabolism and energy production, e.g. reversed alterations in the levels of myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7), cardiac phospholamban (PLN), and ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 1 (ANKRD1). RIO also attenuated TAC-induced changes of microRNA levels in the LV. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: The sGC stimulator RIO has beneficial effects on cardiac structure and function during pressure overload, which is accompanied by a reversal of TAC-induced changes of the cardiac proteome and microRNA profile. Our data support the potential of RIO as a novel HF therapeutic.

Abstract

In the 12,000 years preceding the Industrial Revolution, human activities led to significant changes in land cover, plant and animal distributions, surface hydrology, and biochemical cycles. Earth system models suggest that this anthropogenic land cover change influenced regional and global climate. However, the representation of past land use in earth system models is currently oversimplified. As a result, there are large uncertainties in the current understanding of the past and current state of the earth system. In order to improve representation of the variety and scale of impacts that past land use had on the earth system, a global effort is underway to aggregate and synthesize archaeological and historical evidence of land use systems. Here we present a simple, hierarchical classification of land use systems designed to be used with archaeological and historical data at a global scale and a schema of codes that identify land use practices common to a range of systems, both implemented in a geospatial database. The classification scheme and database resulted from an extensive process of consultation with researchers worldwide. Our scheme is designed to deliver consistent, empirically robust data for the improvement of land use models, while simultaneously allowing for a comparative, detailed mapping of land use relevant to the needs of historical scholars. To illustrate the benefits of the classification scheme and methods for mapping historical land use, we apply it to Mesopotamia and Arabia at 6 kya (c. 4000 BCE). The scheme will be used to describe land use by the Past Global Changes (PAGES) LandCover6k working group, an international project comprised of archaeologists, historians, geographers, paleoecologists, and modelers. Beyond this, the scheme has a wide utility for creating a common language between research and policy communities, linking archaeologists with climate modelers, biodiversity conservation workers and initiatives.

Abstract

The phrase after Auschwitz plays a central role in Adorno's oeuvre. To him, the industrialized genocide of Jews, Sinti and Roma, and Slavic people at death camps like Auschwitz, the systematic mass killing of human beings labeled “life unworthy of life” by their murderers and the ideologues behind them, the ruthlessness and utter contempt for humanity of the Nazi German perpetrators of these unimaginable crimes, give those who live after Auschwitz certainties about the extent of human cruelty as well as human torment that undermine any trust in civilization and social progress, in traditional appeals to meaning, beauty, truth, or goodness. The clearest theoretical expression of these certainties can be found in Adorno's impossibility claims about poetry and art, about the good life, about metaphysical fundamentals. This contribution will examine these impossibility claims in order to clarify the philosophical role of Adorno's phrase after Auschwitz in his own works, but also in order to place Adorno's reflections on life and thought after Auschwitz with respect to our contemporary situation.

46. In-situ single submicron particle composition analysis of ice residuals from mountain-top mixed-phase clouds in Central Europe

Abstract

This paper presents results from the "INUIT-JFJ/CLACE 2013" field campaign at the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch in January/February 2013. The chemical composition of ice particle residuals (IPR) in a size diameter range of 200–900 nm was measured in orographic, convective and non-convective clouds with a single particle mass spectrometer (ALABAMA) under ambient conditions characterized by temperatures between −28 and −4 °C and wind speed from 0.1 to 21 km h−1. Additionally, background aerosol particles in cloud free air were investigated. The IPR were sampled from mixed-phase clouds with two inlets which selectively extract small ice crystals in-cloud, namely the Counterflow Virtual Impactor (Ice-CVI) and the Ice Selective Inlet (ISI). The IPR as well as the aerosol particles were classified into seven different particle types: (1) black carbon, (2) organic carbon, (3) black carbon internally mixed with organic carbon, (4) minerals, (5) one particle group (termed "BioMinSal") that may contain biological particles, minerals, or salts, (6) industrial metals, and (7) lead containing particles. For any sampled particle population it was determined by means of single particle mass spectrometer how many of the analyzed particles belonged to each of these categories. Accordingly, between 20 and 30% of the IPR and roughly 42% of the background particles contained organic carbon. The measured fractions of minerals in the IPR composition varied from 6 to 33%, while the values for the "BioMinSal" group were between 15 and 29%. Four percent to 31% of the IPR contained organic carbon mixed with black carbon. Both inlets delivered similar results of the chemical composition and of the particle size distribution, although lead was found only in the IPR sampled by the Ice-CVI. The results show that the ice particle residual composition varies substantially between different cloud events, which indicates the influence of different meteorological conditions, such as origin of the air masses, temperature and wind speed.

Abstract

Aerosol radiative forcing estimates suffer from large uncertainties as a result of insuffi-cient understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions. The main source of these uncertain-ties are dynamical processes such as turbulence and entrainment but also key aerosolparameters such as aerosol number concentration and size distribution, and to a much lesser extent, the composition. From June to August 2011 a Cloud and Aerosol Char-acterization Experiment (CLACE) was performed at the high-alpine research stationJungfraujoch (Switzerland, 3580 m a.s.l.) focusing on the activation of aerosol to formliquid-phase clouds (in the cloud base temperature range of−8 to 5◦C). With a boxmodel the sensitivity of the effective peak supersaturation (SSpeak), an important parameter for cloud activation, to key aerosol and dynamical parameters was investigated.It was found that the updraft velocity, defining the cooling rate of an air parcel, is the pa-rameter with the largest influence on SSpeak. Small-scale variations in the cooling ratewith large amplitudes can significantly alter CCN activation. Thus, an accurate knowl-edge of the air parcel history is required to estimate SSpeak. The results show that the cloud base updraft velocities estimated from the horizontal wind measurements madeat the Jungfraujoch can be divided by a factor of approximately 4 to get the updraftvelocity required for the model to reproduce the observed SSpeak. Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrinopathy in patients with thalassemia major, but the occurrence of hemoglobinopathies is rare in Germany and Western Europe. The longitudinal German-Austrian DPV (Diabetes Patienten Verlaufsdokumentation) registry allows a comprehensive characterization of this group of patients. Patients/methods: Patients from the DPV-registry aged<30 years with thalassemia major or other hemoglobinopathies were compared to patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) using the statistical software SAS 9.4. Results: 94 patients (0.13% of patients) with hemoglobinopathies are registered in DPV. 82.4% of 17 patients with thalassemia major, 100% of 12 patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and >90% of 65 patients with other hemoglobinopathies receive insulin treatment. In the majority of patients with thalassemia major, hemosiderosis is documented. Patients with thalassemia major developed diabetes at a median age of 14.6 [IQR 8.4-18.0] years (9.0 years [5.3-12.5] in T1D; 18.7 years [14.2-25.6] in TD2; both p<0.01). They show high HbA1c/fructosamine levels and frequent hypoglycemia, reflecting poor metabolic control. Conclusion: Diabetes in thalassemia major is probably caused by hemosiderosis due to polytransfusion, while patients with SCD/thalassemia minor are most likely affected by T1D. The high rate of hypoglycemia in patients with ss-thalassemia major may be caused by liver fibrosis and a lack of hepatic glycogen stores.
