Childhood obesity prevalence is continuing to rise in developed countries, including New Zealand. The effect of increased adiposity on children's fitness is relatively unresearched, particularly when using methods other than BMI or skinfold thickness to estimate body fatness. The purpose of the study was to examine the association between fitness and bioelectrical impedance-derived body composition in children. Participants (n = 54) performed a treadmill run to exhaustion, a countermovement vertical jump, and 10m sprint test within 2 weeks of each other. Lean and fat mass were estimated via bioelectrical impedance (MF-BIA2; InBody 230, Biospace, Seoul, Korea). Pearson correlations showed that in females, higher fat mass percentage was associated with lower countermovement jump (r = -0.57), longer 10m sprint time (0.51) and a lower ... O2peak performance (-0.48). In boys, higher fat mass percentage was associated with lower ... O2peak (-0.36). In both boys and girls lean mass percentage was highly correlated with improved performance in all fitness tests (r = 0.40-0.70). We conclude that lean mass in all cases has a beneficial effect on performance, whereas fat mass tends to be detrimental to girls performance and is likely to be detrimental (... This study aimed to evaluate the effect of elastic tape compared to placebo tape and static stretching on recovery of anaerobic power after intensive exercise in untrained females. Thirty-two untrained female volunteers were randomized into an elastic tape (n= 11), a placebo tape (n = 11) or a stretching group (n =10). Prior to, and for up to 7 days after exhaustive eccentric exercise, Kinesio elastic tape and placebo tape were applied to the dominant quadriceps of taping groups, while the stretching group performed static stretching on the quadriceps for 30s x 10 sets 3 times a day. There was no significant difference in muscle pain, creatine kinase, maximum isometric voluntary contraction, jump height and anaerobic power between the three groups over the course of the study. In untrained females, elastic tape did not improve recovery of anaerobic power after exhaustive eccentric exercise compared to placebo tape or static stretching with no tape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and the possible risk factors in Thai athletes. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 96 student athletes (73 males, 23 females) at the Institute of Physical Education Udonthani Thailand. Vitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency (<20 ng/mL) or insufficiency (20-30 ng/mL) was determined using a standard blood test. The mean±SD age was 20.8±1.4 years. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D was 42.7% (8.3% for vitamin D deficiency, 34.4% for vitamin D insufficiency). Factors related to hypovitaminosis D included being a female (OR=2.7, 95% CI 1.0-7.0, P=0.04), and sun exposure of 30 min or less per day (OR=3.1, 95% CI 1.2-8.0, P=0.01). However, types of sport, sunscreen application, and consumption of high vitamin D foods were not significantly related to hypovitaminosis D prevalence. The relatively high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in student athletes suggests these sport athletes (particularly the females) should consider increasing their exposure to vitamin D producing mechanisms.
