2. Achievement Gaps: How Black and White Students in Public Schools Perform in Mathematics and Reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Statistical Analysis Report. NCES 2009-455

Abstract

Mathematics and reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have increased among students attending elementary and secondary schools since the first time the assessment was administered. These score increases have been observed both for Black and White students; statistically significant score differences between the two racial/ethnic groups have also been observed. This statistical analysis report, "Achievement Gaps: How Black and White Students in Public Schools Perform in Mathematics and Reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress," examines achievement gaps between Black and White public-school students at both the national and state levels. The report uses data from two assessment programs--main NAEP and Long-Term Trend (LTT) NAEP. While both programs assess reading and mathematics, they are different in three major respects: (1) main NAEP assesses performance of students in 4th- and 8th-grades, while LTT NAEP assesses performance of students ages 9 and 13; (2) main NAEP reports results for both the national and state levels, while LTT NAEP reports results for the national level only; (3) main NAEP was first administered in the 1990s, while LTT NAEP was first administered in the 1970s. The report uses results from all assessment years including the 2007 main NAEP and the 2004 LTT NAEP. All results are for public school students. The percentages of Black and White students in individual states vary by state. Some states' trends could not be reported because there were not enough Black or White students in the sample to have reportable results. This report is organized as follows. Following an introduction, the remainder of this report presents first mathematics and then reading results. In each section, long-term trend results are presented first, giving national results only for public school students ages 9 and 13. These are followed by both national and state results for public school fourth- and eighth-graders from main NAEP. National data from main NAEP are also presented by (1) gender; and (2) eligibility categories for the National School Lunch Program. The last section consists of two appendixes that contain relevant technical notes and supplemental tables. (Contains 12 footnotes, 11 tables, and 24 figures.) 3. Personality and Occupational Stress in Elite Performers.

Abstract

Performing Arts Psychology has recently emerged as a unique subspecialty comparable to that of Sports Psychology. Attention has been focused on problems common to all performers (e.g., performance anxiety); however, the various stresses within each art form often remain hidden from view. To assess the psychological aspects of different art forms, this study compared two groups of professionals in dance and music. Dancers were members of two national ballet companies and had achieved either soloist or principal status. Musicians were violinists and violists who performed in a variety of solo positions. Performers (N=48) completed demographic information and were then administered measures of personality and occupational stress, strain, and coping. The results revealed that the dancers were less educated than the musicians, a fact that can lead to problems with career transitions. Dancers also experienced greater occupational stress due to conflicting demands from their dance supervisors and unclear professional evaluations. Musicians, who are subjected to an enforced equality between the sexes, reported more interpersonal strain. Negative personality traits (e.g., hostility) were present in both professions, but were highlighted in male performers. The men used fewer rational/cognitive coping skills, had less social support, and reported more symptoms associated with poor health. These data suggest that job-related stress varies according to the art form and that male performers may be less able to cope effectively. (Author/NB)

7. Construct Validity of the Multidimensional Structure of Bullying and Victimization: An Application of Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract

Existing research posits multiple dimensions of bullying and victimization but has not identified well-differentiated facets of these constructs that meet standards of good measurement: goodness of fit, measurement invariance, lack of differential item functioning, and well-differentiated factors that are not so highly correlated as to detract from their discriminant validity and substantive usefulness in school settings. Here we demonstrate exploratory structural equation modeling, an integration of confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis. On the basis of responses to the 6-factor Adolescent Peer Relations Instrument (verbal, social, physical facets of bullying and victimization), we tested invariance of factor loadings, factor variances-covariances, item uniquenesses, item intercepts (a lack of differential item functioning), and latent means across gender, year in school, and time. Using a combination of relations with student characteristics and a multitrait-multimethod analysis, we showed that the 6 bully/victim factors have discriminant validity over time and in relation to gender, year in school, and relevant psychosocial correlates (e.g., depression, 11 components of academic and nonacademic self-concept, locus of control, attitudes toward bullies and victims). However, bullies and victims are similar in many ways, and longitudinal panel models of the positive correlations between bully and victim factors suggest reciprocal effects such that each is a cause and an effect of the other. What knowledge, skills, and values do psychologists need to consult in the performing arts? As with sport psychology, clinicians in this subspecialty often use cognitive-behavioral techniques that enhance performance. However, performing arts consultation differs in several important ways. First, because peak performance cannot be measured by a 'perfect score' performing arts consultants focus on the art form's esthetic and technical requirements. Common occupational pressures, resulting in physical and mental stress, also are addressed. Finally, effective interventions are tailored to art-specific issues for each performer. Ballet students, who are close to their ideal weights are prone to eating disorders and injuries as they have to be on diet to attain the perfect body needed for professional ballet. Students, who completed the 2-year intervention study, are naturally thinner unlike those who left the study incomplete. The dancers, who completed the study were less subject to dieting behavior, and are at lower risk from eating disorders. Pupils who did not complete the study are more inclined to gain weight, which can lead to the end of their ballet studies.

An experimental study of ornamental traits such as colorful bird plumage in newly hatched American coot chicks reveals that parents prefer young chicks with strange ornamental plumes for feeding. The preferential treatment offered to ornamental chicks over non-ornamented chicks leads to enhanced growth rates and endurance for ornamented chicks. Parental choice exhibits a relative selection of specific traits.
