Introduction Application of natural organic matter derived components, i.e. humic acid, as fertilizer is a suitable way to improve soil fertility and increase yield and quality of agricultural products. Many researchers reported positive effects of humic acid on water holding capacity, soil aeration, root formation and development, microorganism activities, and availability of mineral nutrients in soil. Antagonistic interaction between soil phosphorus and some micronutrients, especially in calcareous soils, can cause micronutrients deficiency in plants. With regard to positive effects of organic compounds on bioavailability of mineral nutrients, it seems that humic acid can positively affect the phosphorus interaction with micronutrients. Therefore, investigation of the effects of humic acid incorporated into irrigation water, phosphate and iron fertilizers application, on nutrients concentration in plants and their interactions is considerable. Materials and Methods This study was carried out to investigate the effects of application of humic acid in irrigation water, and phosphate and iron fertilizers in soil, on corn growth and concentration of P, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu in corn tissues. To this aim, a factorial experiment was conducted based on completely randomized design, with three replications in greenhouse. The factors included humic acid in 0, 70, and 140 mg kg-1 levels, (7 times as fertigation during growth season; total use equal to 0, 490, and 980 mg kg-1 of soil, respectively), phosphorus (P, as monocalcium phosphate monohydrate) in 0 and 50 mg kg-1 levels, and Fe (as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate) in 0, 10, and 20 mg kg-1 levels. P and Fe treatments were mixed with 4 kg of air-dried soil (<2 mm in diameter) and filled to the pots. Six seeds of maize (Zea maye L. cv. Single cross 704) were seeded per pot, and three seedlings were finally kept and grown for two months. After harvest, fresh and dried weight of shoots were measured. The roots were accurately extracted from the soil, washed, dried at 65°C, and weighed. Sample digestion and measuring concentration of P, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu were done according to conventional methods (P by a UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and metal elements by the GBS Savant Atomic Absorption Spectrometer). Statistical analyses were done by the IBM SPSS Statistics version 26 software. Results and Discussion According to this study results, the main effect of humic acid, on P concentration and dry matter of shoots and roots, was statistically significant. In presence of P (2nd P level), 490 and 980 mg kg-1 humic acid levels significantly increased the mean of dry matter compared to blank while humic acid had no significant effect on means of shoots and roots dry matter in 1st level of P (no P application). Increasing humic acid level from 490 to 980 mg kg-1, significantly decreased mean of shoots dry matter. The interaction effect between humic acid and the other two factors exhibited statistical significance concerning root dry matter. The treatment combination of 50 mg kg-1 of P, 490 mg kg-1 of humic acid, and 20 mg kg-1 of Fe yielded the highest mean root dry matter, which was 97% greater than that of the control. The 2nd level of P significantly increased the means of shoots P concentration in all levels of humic acid and Fe factors, compared to those of the 1st P factor level. There was no significant difference between means of shoots P concentration in different levels of humic acid and Fe factors, at the 1st level of P factor, separately. On the other hand, at the 2nd level of P factor, significant differences were observed between the means of P concentration for both other factors (significant interaction between P and humic acid, and between P and Fe Factors). Applying humic acid could significantly increase the means of shoots P concentration at the 2nd level of P factor, but there was no significant difference between those of 490 and 980 mg kg-1 levels. About the effect of Fe factor on shoots P concentration, only 10 mg kg-1 level of Fe significantly increased it. The main effect of the P and humic acid factors and interaction of the P and Fe factor on roots P concentration, were statistically significant. Roots P concentration increased significantly by 490 and 980 mg kg-1 humic acid levels. A significant increase of roots P concentration was observed in the 1st P factor level and 10 mg kg-1 level of Fe compared to the blank, and in 50 mg kg-1 level of P, Fe factor had no significant effect on it. The results showed that humic acid could not improve P uptake by corn from the soil with low available phosphorus (Olsen extractable P lower than 4 mg kg-1). The humic acid factor had no significant effect on Fe concentration of corn shoots, but its main effect and its triple interaction, with two other factors, on Fe concentration of the roots were statistically significant. There was no significant difference between the means of roots Fe concentration at the 1st level of P factor (9 treatments, various levels of humic acid and Fe factors). The highest mean of root's Fe concentration was found in treatment of the highest level of each factor, significantly more than those of the most of other treatments. About the Mn concentration in corn tissues, the Mn concentration in shoots was significantly increased by P fertilizer application, and Mn concentration in roots was significantly affected and increased by 490 and 980 mg kg-1 humic acid levels. The means of Mn concentration of roots in 490 and 980 mg kg-1 humic acid were not significantly different. The Zn concentration of corn shoots was significantly affected by interaction of the P and humic acid factors as the highest mean of it was in 0 mg kg-1 of P and 980 mg kg-1 humic acid levels, and there was no significant difference between those of other levels. The Zn concentration of corn roots was significantly increased by P applying and affected by the interaction of humic acid and Fe factors. When humic acid was at zero concentration level, Fe application of 20 mg kg-1 significantly decreased the Zn concentration of corn shoots while with humic acid application (490 and 980 mg kg-1) no significant difference was observed between the means. This result showed that humic acid can decrease the antagonistic effects of Fe and Zn in soil. The Cu concentration in shoots was significantly affected by the P and Fe factors. Usage of P fertilizer significantly increased the Cu concentration of corn shoots; on the contrary, the 2nd and 3rd levels of Fe factor (Fe applications) significantly decreased Cu concentration in shoots of corn. Moreover, using humic acid could significantly increase Cu concentration of corn roots without any significant interaction with the other two factors. Conclusion The findings suggest that in soils with very low available P, humic acid alone does not enhance the growth and dry matter yield of corn. However, the efficiency of phosphate fertilizer can be enhanced by applying humic acid fertilizer through irrigation water. Additionally, humic acid has been observed to mitigate antagonistic effects between P and certain micronutrients, as well as reduce antagonistic interactions among metal micronutrients. In order to compare the effect of three nutrient solution replacement methods in an NFT system and pruning on hot pepper, a factorial experiment was conducted. Factors included nutrient solution replacement method (complete nutrient replacement, partial nutrient replacement according to EC, and partial nutrient replacement according to plant requirements) and pruning (pruning and non-pruning). Results showed that the highest vegetative growth was recorded in plants fed by complete replacement of nutrient solution, while plant fed based on EC showed the lowest vegetative growth and nutrients concentration. Leaf Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and Total Chlorophyll (TChl) decreased in plants fed according to EC control and plant requirements compared to complete replacement of nutrient solution. All these traits were higher in non-pruned plants than in pruned plants. Fruit yield decreased in plants fed based on nutrient solution EC and plant requirements, and pruning treatment decreased these traits, but the highest single fruit weight belonged to pruned plants fed based on plant requirements. The highest fruit carotenoid content, Total Soluble Solids (TSS), and vitamin C were recorded in plants fed according to nutrient solution EC, and these traits were higher in the pruned plants compared to non-pruned ones. A greenhouse study was carried out to determine the effect of nitrogen forms and different O2 levels on growth and mineral nutrient concentrations of eggplant. The experimental design was a completely randomized factorial experiment with two factors, namely: (i) Two nitrogen forms (Ca(NO3)2 and (NH4)2SO4) and (ii) Three O2 levels of the nutrient solutions (1'0.3, 2'0.3, 3'0.3, and 4'0.3 mg L-1 O2). The results showed that ammonium application reduced all measured parameters of vegetative growth, whereas high oxygen levels increased the vegetative growth. Comparing with nitrate-N, ammonium application increased the concentrations of NPK and Zn in leaves and Zn and Cu in roots, while it decreased the concentration of Mg, Ca, Cu, Mn, and Na in leaves and Ca, Mg, Mn, and Na in roots. High levels of O2 increased N, Mg, Ca, Cu, and Mn content of leaves, as well as Mn and Na content in roots, while it decreased the concentration of K in leaves and P and Zn in roots. According to the results, the increase in O2 amount of the nutrient solutions partly alleviated ammonium toxicity in eggplant. Therefore, in floating hydroponic cultures, O2 level and its distribution should be controlled and must not be lower than 4 mg L-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to determine the best growing media for Gerbera jamesonii under alkaline conditions, a factorial experiment was conducted with two factors, namely: (i) Growing medium, and (ii) Concentrations of bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in nutrient solution. Results showed that increasing the concentration of NaHCO3 from 0 to 40 mM in nutrient solution significantly decreased plant growth, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), photosynthesis Performance Index (PI), Glutamine Synthetase (GS) activity, Leaf Relative Water Content (LRWC), Chlorophylls (Chl a, b and tota Chl) and carotenoids. Under alkalinity stress, reduction in vegetative growth, Fv/Fm, PI, LRWC, GS activity and photosynthesis pigments content was the lowest in Coconut Fiber (CF) substrate compared to the other substrates. Furthermore, plants grown in CF substrate had higher soluble sugars and proline content than those in other substrates. On the other hand, plants grown on Perlite (P) substrate had the highest reduction in growth and physiological characteristic in alkaline conditions. The alleviation of alkalinityinduced growth inhibition of plants by CF substrate may be related to improvement of photosynthesis, enhancement of GS enzyme activity and osmotic regulation. It is concluded that the use of CF substrate could provide a useful tool to improve alkalinity tolerance of gerbera plants under NaHCO3 stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shakedown and ratcheting behaviors of pipes under thermo-mechanical loading have an important role in their design. In this study, Plastic, Elastic shakedown and ratcheting limit of the pipelines with different types of defects were analyzed. The pipelines were subjected to the constant internal pressure and the cyclic thermal gradient. Different dimensions of these defects were also studied. Nonlinear kinematic hardening model of Armstrong–Frederick coupled with continuum damage mechanics was used and material properties were considered temperature-dependent. The unified Lemaitre’s model was used in continuum damage mechanics. Interaction diagrams (Bree's diagram) of the defective pipelines were obtained and parametric studies involving different types and dimensions of part-through slot in the defective pipeline were investigated. Background and Objectives The most common marker used for HBV infection diagnosis in blood donors is screening for HBsAg. The failure of HBsAg detection in blood donors cause of either the window period, or the mutation in S gene, or the reduction in the antigen synthesis can lead to transfusion-transmitted HBV in blood recipients. There have been reported hepatitis cases following the transfusion of anti-HBc positive blood and blood components. The prevalence of anti-HBc in populations is proportional to the prevalence of HBsAg. It is better then for studies about the prevalence of anti-HBc to be conducted in HBV highly prevalent regions. Thus, the aim of this study was to survey anti-HBc and anti-HBs prevalence rates in blood donors in Sistan-o-Baluchestan. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study, 1500 HBsAg negative samples were collected from Sistan-o-Baluchestan and tested for anti-HBc. All anti-HBc positive samples were tested for anti-HBs. All data were analyzed statistically using Chi-square test. Results Out of 1500 blood donors who were negative for HBsAg, 144 (9.6%) were positive for anti-HBc with 74.3% having the immunity titer of anti-HBs. Conclusions In this study, the prevalence rate of anti-HBc was very high. Most of anti-HBc positive blood donors were positive for anti-HBs. Background and Objectives Micro RNAs are a class of small non-coding RNAs which have been recently shown to play a crucial role in major cellular processes such as development and differentiation through posttranscriptional regulation. The role of these epigenetic elements has been also demonstrated in hematopoietic lineage differentiation and there is a large body of evidence that miR-150 and miR-146a are responsible for T lymphocyte differentiation. Our goal was to examine the effect of miR-150 and miR-146a overexpression in hematopoietic stem cells and its ability to differentiate these cells into a T lymphoid cell. Materials and Methods In this experimental study CD133+ stem cells were employed as hematopoietic stem cells and permanent overexpression of miR-150 and miR-146a was established. The differentiation progress was tracked by flowcytometry for lymphocyte markers such as CD4 and CD8. Moreover, expression of miR-146a and miR-150 by RT-PCR and quantitative real time PCR after 7 days was studied. Results The cells showed T lymphoid characteristics 7 days after transduction. CD4 and especially CD8 expression significantly increased. Conclusions In conclusion, miR-150 and miR-146a overexpression is an effective factor in T cytotoxic differentiation and they have the ability of directing CD133+ hematopoietic stem cells to express T lymphoid characteristics. Objective: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, with atherosclerosis serving as a primary factor in their development. Platelets, leukocytes, and their interactions play a crucial role in initiating and amplifying atherosclerosis. This study aims to evaluate the levels of platelet-monocyte aggregates (PMA) and specific integrins involved in leukocyte recruitment, including macrophage-1 antigen (Mac-1) and lymphocyte functionassociated antigen-1 (Lfa-1), in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS)., Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, thirty-two subjects with ACS and 30 healthy individuals participated. It aimed to evaluate PMA expression and the median fluorescence intensity (MFI) of Mac-1 and Lfa-1 using flow cytometry. Dot plots and Pearson correlation coefficient were employed to examine the relationship between PMA, Mac-1, and Lfa-1. Multilevel model analysis was used to explore the effects and relationships of various parameters, including Mac-1 and Lfa-1, on PMA. Finally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to assess the diagnostic accuracy of PMA, Mac-1, and Lfa-1 markers., Results: It was observed that patients had higher PMA levels compared to the control group (58.99 ± 16.27 vs. 29.99 ± 4.19 in controls, P<0.001), which correlated with PLT (ρ=0.512, P=0.035). Additionally, CD18 and CD11b expression on monocytes were significantly elevated in patients (P<0.001) and were positively associated with PMA (β=19.09, P<0.001; β=6.90, P=0.022), but no significant relationship between CD11a and PMA was observed (β=5.06, P=0.315). PMA and Mac-1 were identified as better markers for differentiating patients from healthy individuals. (respectively, AUC=0.94, Sensitivity= 0.84, specificity=0.98; AUC=0.84, Sensitivity= 0.93, specificity=0.70)., Conclusion: The study results indicated an increase in both Mac-1 and PMA levels in patients with ACS. Additionally, the significant association observed between Mac-1 and PMA in the patient group suggests a potential relationship between these markers and ACS.

Background: One of the major problems for patients with severe hemophilia A (HA) is the development of neutralizing antibodies against factor VIII. This study aimed to analyze the molecular and clinical profiles of patients with severe HA and to determine if certain genetic variants predispose to inhibitor development in these patients., Methods: A single-center study was conducted among patients with severe HA between March 20, 2000, and June 31, 2023. Demographic data and laboratory results of patients were collected. The inverse-shifting PCR (IS-PCR) technique was initially used to screen patients for intron 22 and 1 inversions (Inv-22 and Inv-1)., Results: A total of 480 patients with severe HA (408 without inhibitors and 72 with inhibitors) were enrolled in this study. The median age of the patients at the time of diagnosis was 6 months (IQR: 3 months to 18 months). Inv-22 was observed in 199 (41.5 %) of the cases. Among those patients who developed inhibitors, 53 (73.6 %) were classified as high-titer and 19 (26.4 %) as low-titer. Inv-22, positive family history of inhibitor formation, and history of intense injections revealed a statistically significant association with the risk of inhibitor development., Conclusion: The results of this study confirm the important role of different genetic variants, family history of inhibitor formation, and history of intense injections for the formation of inhibitors in patients with severe HA. Metal contamination in soil poses a significant environmental concern worldwide, necessitating effective remediation strategies such as phytoremediation. The present study investigated the effects of EDTA dosage (1.5 and 3 mmol kg -1 ) and two Trichoderma species (T. harzianum and T. aureoviride) on copper (Cu) content and growth of maize plants grown in a Cu-contaminated soil, as well as Cu fractionation in the soil. In the absence of EDTA, only inoculation with T. harzianum led to a significant increase in shoot biomass. Combining fungal inoculum with EDTA only yielded a significant increase in shoot biomass when using T. aureoviride at a low EDTA rate, highlighting the interplay between fungal species and EDTA rates on plant growth. Results also indicated that EDTA application increased Cu bioavailability, enhancing Cu dissolution and root (not shoot) Cu concentrations. Conversely, inoculation with both Trichoderma species reduced Cu mobility and bioavailability in soil, thereby decreasing the shoot Cu concentrations of plants. When combined with EDTA, only application of T. harzianum resulted in an enhanced shoot Cu concentration, whereas combined application of T. aureoviride and EDTA did not make a significant change compared to the corresponding control (no fungal inoculation, no EDTA), possibly due to a lower compatibility of the T. aureoviride isolate with EDTA. Our results demonstrated that EDTA application, in both non-inoculated and inoculated treatments, increased Cu availability by facilitating its redistribution and transformation from less plant-available fractions (residual, Fe/Mn oxide-bound, and carbonate-bound) to the more readily plant-available forms (water-soluble and exchangeable fractions). In conclusion, although individual Trichoderma application proved beneficial for phytostabilization by reducing Cu content and mitigating Cu toxicity in plants, the combined application of EDTA and a compatible Trichoderma isolate (here, the T. harzianum isolate) holds promise for enhancing the phytoextraction capacity of plants. Although using maize has the advantage of being a food crop, to optimize phytoextraction, plant species with superior metal tolerance and phytoextraction capabilities should be selected, exceeding those of maize., (© 2024. Background: There is a high prevalence of inherited bleeding disorders in Iran, such as hemophilia A (HA) and hemophilia B (HB). This study aimed to analyze the molecular and clinical profiles of patients with HB., Methods: A single-center study was conducted among patients with severe HB between March 20, 2000, and June 31, 2023. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was used for all of the major regions, such as the promoter, the exons, the adjacent intronic regions, and the untranslated regions of the F9 gene. Finally, Sanger sequencing was performed on the PCR products., Results: A total of 111 HB patients (17 with HB [Leyden +] and 94 with HB [Leyden -]) were enrolled in this study. Among 94 patients with HB (Leyden -), 59 (62.8 %) had missense, 21 (22.3 %) had nonsense, and 8 (8.5 %) had frameshift mutations. Moreover, the most frequent pathogenic variant in HB (Leyden +) was c.-17 A>G in this study., Conclusion: The results of this study confirm that HB is caused by a wide range of molecular defects in Iran. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different replacement methods of nutrient solution (complete replacement, electrical conductivity (EC)- based replacement, and replacing based on the plant needs) and different LED light spectra (monochromic white, red, blue, and a combination of red/blue) on the uptake of mineral nutrients, water and electricity consumption and biomass production of two varieties of lettuce (Lollo Rossa and Lollo Bionda; Lactuca sativa var. crispa) in the hydroponic systems. The results showed that replacement methods based on the plant needs and based on EC increased shoot fresh mass and yield index in the NFT system. Also, results showed that the combination of red/blue light increased shoot fresh mass and yield index in the NFT system and in the plant factory under treatment by replacement method based on plant needs. Increasing the concentrations of N, K, and Zn and loss of Fe in nutrient solution were observed in all three replacement methods of nutrient solution in the NFT system. Water consumption was decreased under plant nutrition based on plant needs and based on EC. In the plant factory, the application of LED light spectrum also decreased electricity consumption and cost against fluorescent lamps. In general, it is concluded that nutrient solution replacement based on the plant needs and based on EC and the use of different LED light spectra (especially the combination of red and blue light) can be used to reduce the consumption of water and nutrients in the hydroponic cultivation of lettuce., (© 2023. Background: The identification of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has marked a new era in the molecular understating of the disease. This study investigated the correlation between the changes in the expression of lncRNAs, including HOTAIR, PVT-1, and CRNDE, and the alteration in the expression profile of FLT-3, c-Myc, STAT3, STAT5, and p27 in AML patients. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collected from forty-one newly diagnosed AML patients and ten healthy individuals to evaluate the expression levels of the study genes using qRT-PCR analysis. The probable correlation between the gene expressions was determined using Pearson's correlation test. Results: The results showed that while there was a significant elevation in the expression of FLT3, c-Myc, STAT3, and HOTAIR, p27 expression remarkably diminished in AML patients compared to the control group. Also, a correlation was found between the expression of FLT-3 and p27 and the expression of HOTAIR and STAT3. It was assumed that FLT-3 had a role in increasing the proliferative and survival capacity of AML cells, at least partly, through c-Myc-mediated suppression of p27. Moreover, lncRNA HOTAIR showed to be involved in leukemia proliferation assumably by enhancing the expression of STAT3. Conclusion: Overall, the results of gene profile analysis suggested that studying the expression of HOTAIR, FLT-3, c-Myc, STAT3, and p27 could be helpful to AML patients, and each of these genes could be a valuable target for pharmaceutic intervention., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Tehran University of Medical Sciences.)

The use of light-emitting diode (LED) technology represents a promising approach to improve plant growth and metabolic activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different light spectra: red (656 nm), blue (450 nm), red/blue (3:1), and white (peak at 449 nm) on biochemical properties, photosynthesis and gene expression in two lettuce cultivars (Lollo Rossa and Lollo Bionda) grown under different methods of nutrient solution replacement in hydroponics. Complete replacement and EC-based replacement of nutrient solution increased content of proline and soluble sugars and activity of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, GPX and SOD) under the red/blue LED and red LED light treatments in both cultivars. In addition, the red/blue and the monochromatic red light increased the soluble protein content and the antioxidant activity in the Lollo Rosa cultivar under the replacement method according to the needs of the plant. An increase in flavonoid content in the EC-based method in the Lollo Rosa variety treated with a combination of red and blue light was also observed. The red/blue light had the greatest induction effect on anthocyanin content, expression of the UFGT, CHS, and Rubisco small subunit genes, and the net photosynthetic rate. Data presented here will directly contribute to the development of nutrient solution and LED spectrum management strategies to significantly improve plant growth and metabolism, while avoiding water and nutrient waste, and environmental pollution., (© 2023. Objective: Platelet microRNAs (miRs) have been indicated as a diagnostic biomarker in various diseases, including acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study aimed to investigate the expression of miR-223-5p, miR-126-5p, miR-484, and miR-130a-3p in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD)., Methods: Forty subjects with CAD and 13 healthy individuals were under study. The expression of miR-223-5p, miR-126-5p, miR-484, and miR-130a-3p was measured in platelets by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The relationship between miRNA expression and various parameters of the subjects was analyzed using analysis of variance and Spearman and t-tests., Results: The miR-484 expression was significantly upregulated in the ACS subjects (P = .0097). Moreover, miR-484 had diagnostic value for screening subjects with unstable angina vs controls (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.978, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.92-1, P = .0006) and NSTEMI patients versus controls (AUC = 0.910, 95% CI 0.74-1, P = .005)., Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the upregulated expression of miR-484 in ACS patients might be used as a diagnostic biomarker in ACS., (© The Author(s) 2022. Background: The accumulation of oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) in macrophages in association with platelet activity leads to the formation of foam cells, which play a key role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and coronary artery diseases (CAD). Here, in this study, we aimed to investigate the simultaneous effect of ox-LDL and platelets on foam cell formation, as well as modification in cell markers., Method: First, the U937, a human monocytic cell line, was cultured in RPMI-1640. Then, isolated platelets were co-cultured with the U937 and exposed to ox-LDL (80 µg/ml) to evaluate the impact of ox-LDL on foam cell formation using Oil red O (ORO) staining. Also, the expression of foam cells' surface markers and CD36, ABCA1, SR-B1, ACAT1, and LXRα genes, which are involved in macrophage metabolism and ox-LDL uptake, was measured by flow cytometry and real-time PCR, respectively., Results: Our findings suggest that platelets promoted foam cell formation (ORO-positive cells), accompanied by a higher level of CD163+ M2 macrophages. Furthermore, the expression of CD36, ABCA1, SR-B1, ACAT1 , and LXRα genes, which are implicated in cholesterol accumulation in macrophages, was significantly upregulated in the ox-LDL+ platelets group compared to the control (P < 0.05). Background: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules mediate critical roles in determining responsiveness or non-responsiveness of the immune system, especially in transplantation. Some studies have shown a possible association between certain HLA alleles and some allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) outcomes such as acute/chronic graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD/cGVHD) and overall survival (OS). In the current study, we investigated any possible association of HLA subclasses and acute/chronic GVHD occurrence as well as OS in patients receiving HLA-matched sibling allo-HSCT., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the association of various HLA alleles with the incidence of aGVHD, cGVHD, and OS of 162 patients who received allo-HSCT from HLA-matched sibling between 2009-2018 at Taleghani hospital in Tehran., Results: We found that the incidence of aGVHD grades II-IV was higher among patients who had HLA-B*07 ( P =0.031) and HLA-DRB1*07 ( P =0.052). The presence of HLA-A*01 was associated with 4.5-fold greater odds of incidence in the extensive-type of cGVHD ( P =0.009). Furthermore, HLA-A*03 ( P =0.089), HLA-B*13( P =0.013), HLA-B*40 ( P =0.042), HLA-DRB1*02 ( P =0.074), and HLA-DRB1*04 ( P =0.039) were associated with a lower rate of OS., Conclusion: This study suggests that certain HLA alleles might influence the incidence and severity of acute or chronic GVHD in the context of HLA-matched sibling allo-HSCT. In addition, some specific HLA alleles help predict OS in allo-HSCT recipients. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulting from the demolition of β-cells that are responsible for producing insulin in the pancreas. Treatment with insulin (lifelong applying) and islet transplantation (in rare cases and severe diseases), are standards of care for T1D. Pancreas or islet transplantation have some limitations, such as lack of sufficient donors and longtime immune suppression for preventing allograft rejection. Recent studies demonstrate that autologous hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) can regenerate immune tolerance against auto-antigens. Taking advantage of this feature, autologous HSC transplantation (auto-HSCT) is likely the only treatment for T1D that is associated with lasting and complete remission. None of the other evaluated immunotherapies worldwide had the clinical efficacy of auto-HSCT. Therapy with auto-HSCT is insulin-independent rather than reducing insulin needs or delaying loss of insulin production. Laboratory services are a crucial part of medical care and contribute to physicians' treatment-related decision-making. However, paper-based information exchanges between physicians' offices and laboratories waste physicians' time and prevent them from using outpatient test results in a timely and effective manner. To solve this problem, improve the safety and quality of patient care, and save patients' time and energy, the present study developed a web-based system for electronic information exchange between laboratories and offices in Microsoft Visual Studio with the ASP.net technology and the Microsoft SQL Server database. The developed web-based software met the needs of the users and stakeholders (physicians, laboratory personnel, and patients) in the laboratory service cycle. To evaluate the software, user satisfaction was assessed in terms of user interface, operational functionality, and system performance, indicating the acceptability of all the criteria from the viewpoint of the stakeholders. The developed web-based software enables electronic communication between offices and laboratories (two important healthcare bases), establishes information exchange (sending requests and receiving laboratory results) between these two bases, and also notifies the patients. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative option for various hematologic malignancies. However, fatal complications, such as relapse and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) hampered favorable HSCT outcomes. Cancer cells remained in the body following the conditioning regimen, or those contaminating the autologous graft can cause relapse. Although the relapse is much lesser in allogeneic HSCT, GVHD is still a life-threatening complication in this type of HSCT. Researchers are seeking various strategies to reduce relapse and GVHD in HSCT with minimum effects on the engraftment and immune-reconstitution. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are emerging anti-cancer agents with promising results in battling solid tumors. OVs can selectively replicate in the malignant cells in which the antiviral immune responses have defected. Hence, they could be used as a purging agent to eradicate the tumoral contamination of autologous grafts with no damages to hematopoietic stem cells. Moreover, they have been shown to alleviate GVHD complications through modulating alloreactive T cell responses. Primary results promise using OVs as a strategy to reduce both relapse and GVHD in the HSCT without affecting hematologic and immunologic engraftment. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains a major complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). T cell response plays a critical role in inducing long-term immunity against CMV infection/reactivation that impairs during HSCT. Adoptive T cell therapy (ACT) via transferring CMV-specific T cells from a seropositive donor to the recipient can accelerate virus-specific immune reconstitution. ACT, as an alternative approach, can restore protective antiviral T cell immunity in patients. Different manufacturing protocols have been introduced to isolate and expand specific T cells for the ACT clinical setting. Nevertheless, HLA restriction, long-term manufacturing process, risk of alloreactivity, and CMV seropositive donor availability have limited ACT broad applicability. Genetic engineering has developed new strategies to produce TCR-modified T cells for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious disease. In this review, we presented current strategies required for ACT in posttransplant CMV infection. We also introduced novel gene-modified T cell discoveries in the context of ACT for CMV infection. Background: The intertwining between cancer pathogenesis and aberrant expression of either oncogenes or tumor suppressor proteins ushered the cancer therapeutic approaches into a limitless road of modern therapies. For the nonce and among the plethora of promising anticancer agents, intense interest has focused on pioglitazone, a first in-class of Thiazolidinedione (TZD) drugs that is currently used to treat patients with diabetes., Objective: Intrigued by the overexpression of PPARγ in Acute Promylocytic Leukemia (APL), this study was designed to investigate the effects of pioglitazone in APL-derived NB4 cells., Methods: To assess the anti-leukemic effect of pioglitazone on myeloid leukemia cell lines, we used MTT and trypan blue assays. Given the higher expression level of PPARγ in NB4 cells, we then expanded our experiments on this cell line. To ascertain the molecular mechanism action of pioglitazone in APL-derived NB4 cells, we evaluated the expression levels of a large cohort of target genes responsible for the regulation of apoptosis, autophagy and cell proliferation. Afterward, to examine whether there is a correlation between PPARγ and the PI3K signaling pathway, the amount of Akt phosphorylation was evaluated using western blot analysis., Results: Our results showed that pioglitazone exerted its cytotoxic effect in wild-type PTEN-expressing NB4 cells, but not in leukemic K562 cells harboring mutant PTEN; suggesting that probably this member of TZD drugs induced its anti-leukemic effects through a PTEN-mediated manner. Moreover, we found that not only pioglitazone reduced the survival rate of NB4 through the induction of p21-mediated G1 arrest, also elevated the intracellular level of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which was coupled with upregulated FOXO3a. Notably, this study proposed for the first time that the stimulation of autophagy as a result of the compensatory activation of PI3K pathway may act as a plausible mechanism through which the anti-leukemic effect of pioglitazone may be attenuated; suggestive of the application of either PI3K or autophagy inhibitors along with pioglitazone in APL., Conclusion: By suggesting a mechanistic pathway, the results of the present study shed more light on the favorable anti-leukemic effect of pioglitazone and suggest it as a promising drug that should be clinically investigated in APL patients., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

The objective of this research was to determine the combined effects of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on the phytostabilization of Cd, Pb, and Zn by corn and chemical fractionation of these elements in soil. Three heavy metal-resistant bacteria (P18, P15, and P19) were selected. All strains, belonging to the fluorescent pseudomonads, exhibited plant growth-promoting properties, including phosphorus solubilization and production of siderophore, indole acetic acid, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase. Applying EDTA individually or in combination with bacterial strains (P18 and P15) significantly increased shoot biomass. The highest dry shoot biomass was recorded in the combined treatment of EDTA and P15-inoculated pots. Application of EDTA in PGPR-inoculated pots increased concentrations of heavy metals in corn shoots and roots compared to the control. The highest concentration of Zn in corn root and shoot was observed in P15 + EDTA treatment, which were 2.0-fold and 1.3-fold higher than those in the untreated soil. Results of chemical speciation showed that the co-application of EDTA and fluorescent pseudomonads strains increased the bioavailability of Zn, Pb, and Cd by their redistribution from less soluble fractions to water-soluble forms. It was concluded that bacterial inoculation could improve the efficiency of EDTA in phytostabilization of heavy metals from multi-metal contaminated soils.

Laboratory services form an integral part of medical care in the decision-making of physicians, including those working at ambulatory care centers. Information exchange is essential between ambulatory care centers and laboratories. Inevitable errors have always existed in the exchange of such information on paper, which can be to some extent avoided by developing appropriate computer-based interfaces. Therefore, this review aimed to examine studies conducted to determine the effect of electronic communication between ambulatory care centers and laboratories. This systematic review was conducted on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Studies were searched in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science, and those written in English and published between 2000 and February 2019 with full texts available were selected. From a total of 3898 papers retrieved from the studied databases, 24 papers were eligible for entering this study after removing similar and nonrelated studies. Electronic exchanges between ambulatory care centers and laboratories can have numerous benefits in terms of financial, organizational, and quality. The success in the identification of BCR/ABL tyrosine kinase role in the pathogenesis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) went as far as to find a path to cure this leukemia; however, compensatory activation of leukomogenic signals get across the message that the small molecule inhibitors of oncogenic pathways, along with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, might be a beneficial approach in CML treatment. The results of the present study showed that the abrogation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway using pan-PI3K inhibitor BKM120 exerted a cytotoxic effect against CML-derived K562 cells through both the induction of p21-mediated G2/M arrest and the stimulation of apoptosis. Notably, the apoptotic effect of the inhibitor was further confirmed by the molecular analysis showing that BKM120 significantly increased the expression of pro-apoptotic genes. To the best of our knowledge, the involvement of autophagy in resistance to BKM120 has not been yet described and our study suggests for the first time that the elevation of autophagy-related genes might serve as a compensatory pathway to cease the anti-leukemic effect of BKM120 in K562; since we found a reinforced anti-survival event when the cells were treated with BKM120 in combination with autophagy inhibitor. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that the abrogation of PI3K using BKM120 might be a befitting approach in CML treatment, either as a single agent or in a combined-modal strategy; however, further evaluations including clinical trials and in vivo investigations are demanded to ascertain the safety and the efficacy of the inhibitor in treatment strategies., (© 2020 International Federation for Cell Biology.)

The indulgent success of arsenic trioxide (ATO) in the induction of complete remission in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients has accommodated this agent into the therapeutic protocols. However, the intrusion of unfavorable side effects had put an unanswered question on the way of the application of this agent; whether the benefits of ATO may outweigh its drawbacks. In this study, we found that when ATO is accompanied by an activator of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors gamma (PPARγ), even the lower concentrations could induce significant inhibitory effects on the survival of NB4 through diminishing the ability of the cells to replicate DNA in the S phase of cell cycle. We also found that through suppression of the PI3K pathway, the combination of pioglitazone and ATO provided a signal through which the induction of apoptotic cell death was enhanced probably via the elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). With respect to the tight connection between PI3K pathway and autophagy system and given to the inhibitory effect of pioglitazone-plus-ATO on PI3K, we found that the combination of these agents not only suppressed the expression of autophagy-related genes, but also their efficacy was augmented when autophagy was inhibited in NB4; clarifying the encouraging role of autophagy in the survival maintenance of APL cells. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) are including the most important cytokines which have been associated with the biological behavioral and immune responses in malignancies. Based on the critical roles which these two cytokines play against tumor cells, the present study was aimed to investigate the genes expression level of IL6 and IFN-γ in patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and compare with normal controls. Fifty-two patients with ALL and 13 healthy volunteer were under studied. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells of all patients and normal controls were separated by ficoll. The expression of interferon gamma and interleukin 6 genes were determined by RQ-PCR. Finally all data were analyzes using T student, one way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests were use to analyze all samples data. Our finding showed that the level of IFN-γ gene expression was significant decreased in patients with All as compared with healthy controls (83 change fold, p < 0.0001). The level of IL-6 Gene expression was not changeable in B-ALL patients as compared with healthy control (p = 0.4), but in T-ALL patients, was significantly reduced (p < 0.01). The results of present study indicated that IFN-γ gene expression reduced in ALL patients. It provides a valuable insight that immune system may disrupted in patients with ALL, which cause tumor cells escape from immune surveillance.

Remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils is essential for safe agricultural or urban land use, and phytoremediation is among the most effective methods. The success of phytoremediation relies on the size of the plant biomass and bioavailability of the metal for plant uptake. This research was carried out to determine the effect of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) ligand and Cu-resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on phytoremediation efficiency of selected plants as well as fractionation and bioavailability of copper (Cu) in a contaminated soil. The test conditions included three plant species (maize: Zea mays L., sunflower: Helianthus annuus L., and pumpkin: Cucurbita pepo L.) and six treatments, comprising two PGPR strains (Pseudomonas cedrina K4 and Stenotrophomonas sp. A22), two PGPR strains with EDTA, EDTA, and control (without PGPR and EDTA). The combination of EDTA and PGPR enhanced the Cu concentration in both shoot and root tissues and increased the plant biomass. The Cu specific uptake was at a maximum level in the shoots of pumpkin plants when treated with the PGPR strain K4 + EDTA (202 μg pot -1 ), and the minimum amount of Cu was recorded for sunflower with no PGPR or EDTA addition (29.6 μg pot -1 ). The result of the PGPR-EDTA treatments showed that the combined application of EDTA and PGPR increased the shoot Cu-specific uptake approximately fourfold in pumpkin. Pumpkin with the highest shoot Cu specific uptake and maize with the highest root Cu specific uptake were the most effective plants in phytoextraction and phytostabilization, respectively. The effectiveness of different PGPR-EDTA treatments in increasing Cu specific uptake by crop plants was assessed by measuring the amount of Cu extracted from the rhizosphere soil adhering to the roots of crop species, by the use of the single extractants Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), H 2 O, NH 4 NO 3 , and NH 4 OAc. PGPR-EDTA treatments increased the amount of water-extractable Cu from rhizosphere soils more than ten times that of the control. The combined application of the EDTA and PGPR reduced the carbonated Fe and Mn oxide-bound Cu in the contaminated soil, and increased the soluble and exchangeable concentration of Cu. Pumpkin, with high shoot biomass and the highest shoot Cu specific uptake was found to be the most effective field crop in phytoextraction of Cu from the contaminated soil. The results of this pot study demonstrated that the EDTA+PGPR treatment could play an important role in increasing the Cu bioavailability and specific uptake by plants, and thus increasing the phytoremediation efficiency of plants in Cu-contaminated areas.

Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have accelerated atherosclerosis as a pro thrombotic state that is associated with the platelet activation priming. Platelets, which undergo the continuous mild stimulation, may lose their sensitivity to react to a strong stimulation. The present study aimed to investigate activation responses of platelets to mild and subsequent strong stimulations in patients with T2DM and healthy individuals., Methods: Blood samples, which were taken from 40 patients with T2DM and 35 healthy individuals, were collected into the citrate containing tubes. The samples were subjected to the soft centrifugation to prepare the platelet rich plasma (PRP). Platelets in PRP samples were treated at a low (1 μM) concentration and then at a high (10 μM) concentration of ADP. Before and after stimulation with different doses of ADP, levels of CD62P expression and formation of platelet micro particles (PMPs) were measured using a flow cytometry method., Results: The platelets from patients with T2DM had higher levels of CD62P expression before any stimulation (P = 0.003) than control samples. Platelets, which underwent the mild stimulation, indicated lower responses to CD62P expression, but higher PMPs formation after stimulation with high dose of ADP. Patients with T2DM had higher platelet micro particles in all states with the ADP stimulation. (P = 0.004, SD: ±74.52)., Conclusions: The flow cytometry data indicated that platelets were pre-active and associated with metabolic conditions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The induction of desensitization state helped platelets to reduce the platelet activation and sensitivity to ADP in a diabetic environment. Furthermore, the production of platelets micro-particles was high in the patients; and desensitized platelets were more susceptible to shedding of micro-particles.

Objective: Far beyond hemostasis and thrombosis, significant evidence has indicated the critical role of platelets in atherosclerosis. SDF-1 is among the pro-inflammatory chemokines that are increased in platelets of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The goal of the current work is to identify the in vitro effect of platelets from either CAD patients or healthy volunteers on the induction of macrophages and foam cells., Materials and Methods: The expression of SDF-1 on platelet surfaces in CAD patients and healthy volunteers was investigated using flow cytometry. We also evaluated the CXCR4/CXCR7 expression on monocytes from buffy coats of healthy volunteers. The effect of platelets from CAD patients and healthy volunteers on differentiation of monocytes and foam cell formation was evaluated using Oil Red O (ORO) staining. Flow cytometry and real-time PCR were also employed to evaluate surface markers and mRNA expression of genes involved in this process after co-culture of platelets with monocytes., Results: Monocytes in co-culture with platelets acquired a spindleshape appearance and ORO-positive lipid droplets. In addition, platelets could induce CD163 expression, as an important marker of M2 macrophage, and upregulate the mRNA expression of the SRB, CD36, ACAT, LXR-α , and ABCA1 genes in monocytes. Notably, platelets of CAD patients with higher expression of SDF-1, increased the expression of genes encoding SRB and CD36 as compared to platelets of healthy volunteers., Conclusion: Our results indicate that platelets from CAD patients could provoke monocyte differentiation into macrophages with an M2 phenotype, which in turn may participate in an atheroprotective process.

Background: Bone marrow hypoxia can promote leukemia progression in human cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In addition, low oxygen tension is able to regulate the expression of different genes involved in malignancy. In this study, we hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) genes were assessed as principal regulators of hypoxia in do novo AML patients. Methods: Peripheral blood and bone marrow samples were collected from 57 AML patients and 17 normal control subjects with informed consent. Expression of HIF1α and VEGF-A was then evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR (Q-Real time PCR) and data were analyzed with SPSS 16. Result: HIF1α and VEGF-A showed overexpression in AML patients compared to normal controls (P <0.0001 and P<0.005, respectively). The expression level of HIF1α was significantly higher in AML-M3 cases versus AML-non M3 cases. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between HIF1α and VEGF-A ( P <0.0001 and r = 0.497). Conclusion: Adding to the many studies on the role of hypoxia in solid tumors, our data indicate that HIF1a and VEGF-A overexpression also occurs in AML patients. Warfarin is an anticoagulant that inhibits vitamin K-dependent clotting factors including factor (F) II, FVII, FIX and FX. Different factors can change the effect of this anticoagulant in clinic. Therefore we assessed impact of VKORC1 -1639 G>A polymorphism and demographic factors on required maintenance dose in Iranian patients under warfarin therapy. The study population included 95 patients with a mean age of 61.3 ± 12.6 years. Target INR range of 2-3 was considered for these patients. The frequency of VKORC1 -1639 G>A polymorphism was assessed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Finally the obtain data were analyzed by SPSS software. Our study revealed that 30.5%, 49.5%, and 20% of the patients had VKORC1 (G/G), (G/A), and (A/A) genotypes, respectively. Carriers of VKORC1 G/G genotype required a higher warfarin dose as compared to A/A carriers (4.48 ± 1.32 and 2.7 ± 1.16 mg/day, respectively; P  < 0.01). In addition, patients with higher age required lower warfarin therapeutic dose (r = - 0.3, P  < 0.01). Introduction: The human scavenger receptor class B type 1 (hSR-B1), which serves as a high affinity receptor for HDL, is expressed on platelet surface and mediates various anti-atherogenic functions. Based on the anti-thrombotic effect of HDL and the importance of HDL-SR-B1 in the formation of atherosclerotic plaque, the present study was aimed to investigate and compare the expression level of hSR-B1on platelets of CAD patients with that of normal controls., Methods: The expression of the hSR-B1 on platelets of 31 CAD patients with atherosclerotic plaque and 20 healthy controls were detected using flowcytometry and western blotting. Moreover, platelet function in response to the agonists was examined by aggregometry, and the lipid panel tests were assayed using chemistry autoanalyzer., Results: Our findings showed that the expression of hSR-B1 was significantly reduced on the surface of platelets from CAD patients with atherosclerotic disease, as compared with healthy controls (6/8% vs. 13/6%) (P < 0,001). Of particular of interest, we also found that the formation of aggregates after stimulation of the platelets with ADP was higher in patients with atherosclerotic disease than the controls; indicating an inverse relationship between hSR-B1 expression and the function of human platelets., Conclusion: Taken together, the results of the present study raise the possibility that the measurement of hSR-B1 expression on human platelets may provide a valuable insight that reflects the status of RCT in patients with atherosclerosis.

Introduction: Many genetic studies are conducted on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). however, a high-throughput examination of proteome profile of this severe disease has not been performed yet., Methods: Here, the proteomic study of OCD patients' serum samples was conducted by the application of Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis (2DE) followed by Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-TOF)., Results: A total of 240 protein spots were detected and among them, five significant differentially expressed protein spots with the fold change of ≥1.5 were considered for further evaluations. These proteins include IGKC, GC, HPX, and two isoforms of HP. While IGKC and HP show down-regulation, GC and HPX indicate up-regulation. Moreover, a validation study of overall HP levels in patients' serum via nephelometric quantification confirmed the lower levels of this protein in the serum of OCD patients. Additionally, enrichment analysis and validation test revealed that inflammation is one of most dominant processes in OCD., Conclusion: It is suggested that these candidate proteins and their underlying processes (especially, inflammation) may be linked to OCD pathophysiology and can promise a clinical use after extensive validation studies., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The impressive advances carried out in designing pharmacological strategies with the aim of telomerase inhibition in cancers emerged a consensus that telomerase-targeted therapies could be exciting prospect in repertoire of future cancer strategies. The results of the present study indicated that targeting telomerase using an oligonucleotide-based molecule against human telomerase RNA template (hTR ASODN) reduced the survival rate of NB4 cells and induced a caspase-3-dependent apoptosis. Our finding was even noticeable in the synergistic experiments, where we found an enhanced reduction in the viability of the cells after short-term treatment with ATO in combination with the inhibitor. The resulting data delineated that short-term treatment of the cells with hTR ASODN either as single agent or in combination with ATO resulted in apoptotic cell death through activation of DNA damage response via up-regulation of p73 and ATM coupled with down-regulation of c-Myc. Moreover, we found that induction of p21 and subsequent disturbance of the death promoter to death repressor genes may contribute to the enhanced growth suppressive effect of the drugs combination. Overall, our findings support the idea that telomerase activity may have pivotal role in attenuating ATO effectiveness and combination of ATO with telomerase inhibitor seems to be a novel promising strategy, which may increase APL cure rates., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Elaeagnus angustifolia L., which is commonly known as oleaster or Russian olive, is a deciduous plant from Elaeagnacea family. This plant can tolerate and survive a wide variety of environmental conditions. Different parts of E. angustifolia plant, especially the fruits and flowers, have been used traditionally in treating a variety of common illnesses such as nausea, cough, asthma, fever, jaundice, and diarrhea. The use of fruit powder and extract of E. angustifolia L. have shown to be effective in alleviating pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and also in reducing the healing time of wounds in injured person. In addition, some recent reports have indicated the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer and some other properties of oleaster plant. The other important property of this plant would be its role in bio-monitoring the environment for some toxic elements and also its action as a bio-fertilizer agent in distressed lands. It seems that with more advanced studies on E. angustifolia L. and its bioactive components, this plant might be potentially effective and can be used as a natural alternative resource in pharmaceutical industries for treating chronic and serious problems, Fig. 1.

Background. Biclustering algorithms for the analysis of high-dimensional gene expression data were proposed. Among them, the plaid model is arguably one of the most flexible biclustering models up to now. Objective. The main goal of this study is to provide an evaluation of plaid models. To that end, we will investigate this model on both simulation data and real gene expression datasets. Methods. Two simulated matrices with different degrees of overlap and noise are generated and then the intrinsic structure of these data is compared with biclusters result. Also, we have searched biologically significant discovered biclusters by GO analysis. Results. When there is no noise the algorithm almost discovered all of the biclusters but when there is moderate noise in the dataset, this algorithm cannot perform very well in finding overlapping biclusters and if noise is big, the result of biclustering is not reliable. Conclusion. The plaid model needs to be modified because when there is a moderate or big noise in the data, it cannot find good biclusters. This is a statistical model and is a quite flexible one. In summary, in order to reduce the errors, model can be manipulated and distribution of error can be changed.

Cinnamon has been used traditionally in food preparations and as an herbal medicine to treat a variety of ailments and their symptoms. Cinnamon is known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and other therapeutic properties. New studies reaffirm the importance of cinnamon as a spice but also suggest that it may be a natural remedy to treat serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes, chronic digestion problems, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer and Alzheimer's disease. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the botanical, chemical, and pharmacological aspects of cinnamon.

Immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpurea (ITP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the increased anti-platelet antibodies in the patient's sera and decreased platelets in the blood circulation. This study has determined and characterized the antiplatelet glycoproteins in children with ITP. Thirty eight children, who were hospitalized with clinical signs of ITP in Mofid Children Hospital (Tehran, Iran) during 18 months, went under our clinical studies in a research project. ELISA, Flow cytometry and MAIPA (Monoclonal Antibody Immobilization of Platelet Antigens) methods were employed to determine serum anti-platelet antibodies level. The anti-platelet antibodies level above mean + 3SD of control group was assumed as positive. The platelet counts ranged between 2 × 10(9)/L and 100 × 10(9)/L. Among the patients 63.5% of them were anti-platelet antibodies positive with ELISA method. Results of platelet lysate method showed that 51.7% of patients had antibodies against platelet antigens. Antibody against platelet GPIIb/IIIa, GPIb/IX and GPIa/IIa using MAIPA method were 48%, 54% and 25% respectively. In flow cytometry 62% of patients showed anti-platelet antibodies. The comparison of three methods shows that since MAIPA is the specific method for the detection of very small amount of antibody against glycoprotein antigens, it has the advantage of differentiating between immune and non-immune thrombocytopenia.
