A composite ion exchange material, polyaniline stannic silicate was prepared under different experimental conditions. Ion exchange material synthesized at pH 1.0 shows an ion exchange capacity 1.6 meq/g for Na+ ions. The exchanger has been characterized on the basis of X-ray and TGA. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration, elution and distribution studies were also carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures has been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant mediums. The practical utility of the material was explored by achieving quantitative separation of toxic metal ions in synthetic mixtures.

Schiff base tetraazamacrocyclic ligand, L (C 40 H 28 N 4 ) and its complexes of types, [MLX 2 ] and [CuL]X 2 (M = Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II); X = Cl − , NO 3 − ) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, mass, 1 H NMR, IR, UV–vis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance data. An octahedral geometry has been proposed for all the complexes except the copper(II) complexes which have a square planar environment. The reducing power of the Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes have been checked and compared. The ligand (L) and its complexes have also been screened against different fungi and bacteria in vitro.

A series of 14 and 16‐membered octaazamacrocyclic complexes [ML1X2] and [ML2X2] [M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II), X = Cl or NO3] have been synthesized by a template condensation reaction of hydrazine with 1,3‐dibromopropane or 1,2‐dibromoethane and formaldehyde in methanol. The complexes and their overall geometry and stereochemistry have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, EPR, UV–Visible, magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements. An octahedral geometry is suggested for all of the complexes where two coordination sites are occupied by Cl or NO3 and the other four sites by secondary amines. The low conductivity data suggest that the complexes are non‐ionic.

Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) containing macrocyclic tetradentate nitrogen donor (N4) ligand have been synthesized from the template condensation reaction between o-phthalaldehyde and o-phenylenediamine. The newly synthesized ligand and its complexes have been characterized on the basis of results of elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, FT-IR, electronic, 1H FT NMR spectral data and Job's method. Their thermal behaviour has been studied by the thermogravimetric analysis. An octahedral geometry has been proposed for all of these complexes except the copper complexes, which show distorted octahedral geometry. The low conductivity data suggest their non-ionic nature. The biological activities of the metal complexes have also been studied against different bacteria.

A novel family of hexaazamacrocyclic complexes [MLX2] [M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), X = Cl or NO3] containing pyridine and imine groups as part of the macrocyclic framework have been synthesized by the condensation of o‐phthalaldehyde with 2,6‐diaminopyridine in the presence of metal ions as templates in methanol as solvent. The complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, EPR, UV‐Visible, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity measurements at room temperature. An octahedral geometry has been proposed for all of these complexes. The low conductivity data suggest their non‐ionic nature.
