Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.

Abstract

This research investigates the fabrication and analysis of plastic scintillators using an epoxy matrix. Plastic scintillators are widely used in radiation detection because of their low cost, ease of fabrication, resistance to moisture, and rapid decay time. The production process involved dissolving primary and secondary dopants, p-terphenyl (p-TP) and 1,4-bis [2-(phenyloxazolyl)]-benzene (POPOP), respectively, into a low-viscosity of cycloaliphatic amine as hardener B, which was then combined with Bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether as epoxy A. The ratio of primary and secondary dopants was varied in the experiment. The resulting scintillators were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to analyze the functional groups that constitute the epoxy before and after curing. The morphology of the scintillator sample was evaluated using SEM and The thermal properties were evaluated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The optical properties of the scintillator were studied using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer and a Fluorescence Spectrophotometer. The performance of the scintillator in detecting gamma rays was evaluated using a module comprising a Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) and a Multichannel Analyzer (MCA) with sources of gamma Cesium 137. The results showed that epoxy-based scintillators can provide a detective response to gamma rays. This study demonstrates the potential of epoxy-based plastic scintillators for use in radiation detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper we present the prompt photofission neutron detection performance of undoped CaF2 scintillator using Threshold Activation Detection (TAD). The study is carried out in the frame of C-BORD Horizon 2020 project, during which an efficient toolbox for high volume freight non-intrusive inspection (NII) is under development. Technologies for radiation monitoring are the part of the project. Particularly, detection of various radiological threats on country borders plays an important significant role in Homeland Security applications. Detection of illegal transfer of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) - 235U, 233U and 239Pu - is particular due to the potential use for production of nuclear weapon as well as radiological dispersal device (RDD) V known also as a “dirty bomb”. This technique relies on activation of 19F nuclei in the scintillator medium by fast neutrons and registration of high-energy β particles and γ-rays from the decay of reaction products. The radiation from SNM is detected after irradiation in order to avoid detector blinding. Despite the low 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O reaction cross-section, the method could be a good solution for detection of shielded nuclear material. Results obtained with the CaF2 detector were compared with the previous study done for BaF2 and 3He detector. These experimental results were obtained using 252Cf source and 9 MeV Varian Linatron M9 linear accelerator (LINAC). Finally, performance of the prompt neutron detection system based on CaF2 will be validated at Rotterdam Seaport during field trails in 2018.

Abstract

Scintillators are materials that are able to emit photons when impinged with ionizing radiations. This family of materials is covered by both organic and inorganic structures, with some similarities but also with different photophysical processes occurring underneath. The scientific fields and communities are in fact rather separated, while it would benefit from more interactions and collaborations. This book is mostly focused on plastic scintillators, which are polymer-based materials, and the purpose of this chapter is to introduce and link them to well-known inorganic scintillators. In addition, hybrids materials are new developments based on inorganic nanocrystals in organic host. In such hybrid materials, a complex interplay occurs along the energy relaxation leading to the emission of light. Thanks to their chemical versatility, plastic scintillators can easily be modified. Whereas the first decades have seen their use as "all-purpose" detectors, the most recent developments afford specialization of the materials toward a given application. Thus, various modification stages are possible: the simplest is to tune its chemical properties. Finally yet importantly, current developments in artificial intelligence, as well as highly sophisticated algorithms, are used to overcome intrinsic limitations of plastics properties. This chapter thus gives a historical perspective on the development of plastic scintillators with a mention of past and current main actors. Then, a discussion follows on the basic principles in plastic scintillation design. Their main properties are finally presented and compared with inorganic scintillators. Abstract

In this chapter, we present an overview of the field of plastic scintillation through a chemical point of view. More particularly, we focus on their design by the homogenous incorporation of organometallic dopant in the wide sense of the term. This chapter is organized into sections representing the main application and the associated choice of metal dopant. We present and evaluate in these contexts different chemical strategies, focusing on the inherent tradeoff that comewith loading a plastic scintillator with organometallics. Abstract

Taking advantage of lanthanide chemistry and coordination dynamics, a method was elaborated to embed high amounts of organometallic complexes inside a polymeric matrix. The use of a carbonylated cross‐linker allows more than a 10‐fold increase of the solubility in monomeric solution, which can afford samples reaching up to 1 wt% incorporation of lanthanides atoms. Derivatives of these samples were used as plastic scintillators to observe total gamma‐ray absorption (Photoelectric [PE] effect) of a 241Am source. The analysis was conducted on the PE occurrence rate, which showed a discontinuity along the lanthanide row, confirming that the observed signal is indeed due to PE events. These methods also provide mechanically durable samples with stable photophysical properties comparable to a solution study of lanthanides complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
