Abstract

Slovak children spent almost all afternoon with sedentary activities. Such manner negatively influences physical fitness compared to previous generations. Reduction in regular physical activity is linked with daily routine changes of children due to compulsory full-time schooling. Regular physical activity performed from an early children age does not influence only physical fitness, rather favor heathy child growth and reduces risk of overweight and obesity in advanced age. Regular physical activity helps with developing skills, promotes social behaviour, family life and psychosocial health. Daily recommended physical activity for children is 90 min of moderate intensity or 60 min of moderate to vigorous intensity. Physical activities could be split and cumulated. Active movement should be partly performed in schools as a subject of Physical and Sports education, organized in clubs and leisure time. Recommended physical activities include strength training, for its beneficial effects on healthy physical growth, correct body-control, which is fundamental for every physical movement and sport. Our recommendation and guidelines provide basic information for parents and teachers to gauge sufficient physical activities of children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Thirty-one Debouillet ewe lambs were exposed to elevated dietary copper (Cu) after being fed pelleted alfalfa from two separate feed mills which contained 33 and 45 ppm Cu. After consuming about 5.5 lb/day of this diet for approximately 50 days, signs of Cu poisoning became apparent (hemoglobinemia, hemoglobinuria). Cu toxicity was confirmed by a liver Cu concentration of 439 ± 36 (mean± SE) ppm in five dead animals. During the course of Cu exposure, eight of 31 ewe lambs died. Serum was collected from 10 ewe lambs showing extreme signs of Cu poisoning. Total, direct, and indirect bilirubin, and creatine kinase ( CK) were elevated in ewes consuming Cu. Ten extremely affected ewe lambs that had stopped consuming any feed received gelatin capsules (gavage) containing about 2 oz of a livestock salt/gypsum (76% calcium sulfate) mixture (2:1, weight basis) daily for 10 days. After 10 days of calcium sulfate treatment, serum bilirubin and CK were at or near normal concentrations and neither hemoglobinemia nor hemglobinuria were observed. Abstract

A detailed frequency analysis of the azimuthal bearing of ground-observed whistlers by the modified MFPE method (Lichtenberger et al., 1987) based on two and three component digital recordings is presented. Theoretical model calculations by Strangeways (1980) and Strangeways and Rycroft (1980) on systematic azimuthal bearing errors of direction-finding systems are confirmed. Further, directionfinding systems (based on three measured components that do not suffer from polarization error) have no advantage in practice, and are inferior to simple crossed-loop goniometer systems. The MFPE method simulating the latter can be used as a tool for investigating whistler ducts and hence plasmaspheric drifts. An example of this is presented.

Abstract

Waveforms computed using the new whistler model derived from Maxwell's equations were analysed. In the calculations, realistic model values for magnetospheric parameters were used. The results accurately described whistler-mode propagation in the magnetosphere and provide explanations for some features exhibited by real observed whistlers when they are analysed. In particular, solutions of the exact full-wave whistler model can explain the whistler fine structure, and may be used to develop a more accurate (matched filtering) fine-structure analysis method.

38. Trace splitting of whistlers: A signature of fine structure or mode splitting in magnetospheric ducts?

Abstract

Previously, we reported on the discovery of fine structure in whistler data received on the ground at Halley, Antarctica. This structure was not apparent in conventional spectral analysis but was revealed by the technique of digital matched filtering. We have now examined a larger data set, and a commonly observed phenomenon is that single whistler traces become split into two, over various frequency ranges. Examples are presented in the form of time-transformed spectrograms in which reference model whistlers are represented as vertical lines. The splitting is typically 5–15 ms (about 0.5% of the total whistler travel time) and extends over frequency ranges of a few hundred hertz which may occur anywhere between the upper and lower cutoff frequencies of the whistler. The splitting may be either symmetrical or unsymmetrical with respect to the unsplit trace. The effect is unlikely to arise in the spectrum of the lightning source or from propagation under or through the ionosphere. It may, however, be a signature of field-aligned fine spatial structure in plasmaspheric density, and hence refractive index, in the whistler duct. For simple longitudinal propagation, electron density fluctuations of the order of 1% and spatial scale sizes of the order of 50 km in the equatorial plane are implied. It seems possible that the observations could also be interpreted in terms of the mode theory of ducted propagation, assuming the excitation of two modes with group velocities differing by a few tenths of a percent.

50. Dietary Fat and Exercise Conditioning Effect on Metabolic Parameters in the Horse

Abstract

Four isocaloric diets containing 4, 8, 12 and 16% dietary fat (as soybean oil) were fed to four horses at four intervals according to a Latin square design. After 3 weeks of conditioning at each interval, diet effects were evaluated by trotting all horses at 3.2 m/sec for 6 hours. Pre- and posttrotting responses were measured in muscle and liver glycogen, serum long-chain fatty acids, serum electrolytes, serum enzymes, serum cholesterol, plasma glucose, packed cell volume and hemoglobin. Dietary fat was highly correlated with exercise-induced plasma glucose changes and with cholesterol concentrations. Regardless of the diet, linoleate concentration was about eight times higher than that of the other fatty acids, and it increased slightly as dietary fat levels increased. Stearate concentration also increased with increasing dietary fat but palmitic and oleic acid decreased. Increases in fat intake also resulted in slight increases in liver glycogen at the resting level. Conditioning resulted in a significant decrease in exercise-induced fluctuations of serum enzymes and electrolytes but significantly increased elevations of plasma long-chain fatty acid concentrations. Resting muscle glycogen increased by 37% during the study as a result of conditioning, but there was no effect on liver glycogen at rest or after exercise. Feeding of the four levels of dietary fat in the form of soybean oil had no adverse effects and proved a safe and efficient method of providing concentrated energy to working horses.
