First-principles calculations in crystalline structures are often performed with a planewave basis set. To make the number of basis functions tractable two approximations are usually introduced: core electrons are frozen and the diverging Coulomb potential near the nucleus is replaced by a smoother expression. The norm-conserving pseudopotential was the first successful method to apply these approximations in a fully ab initio way. Later on, more efficient and more exact approaches were developed based on the ultrasoft and the projector augmented wave formalisms. These formalisms are however more complex and developing new features in these frameworks is usually more difficult than in the norm-conserving framework. Most of the existing tables of norm- conserving pseudopotentials, generated long ago, do not include the latest developments, are not systematically tested or are not designed primarily for high accuracy. In this paper, we present our PseudoDojo framework for developing and testing full tables of pseudopotentials, and demonstrate it with a new table generated with the ONCVPSP approach. The PseudoDojo is an open source project, building on the AbiPy package, for developing and systematically testing pseudopotentials. At present it contains 7 different batteries of tests executed with ABINIT, which are performed as a function of the energy cutoff. The results of these tests are then used to provide hints for the energy cutoff for actual production calculations. Our final set contains 141 pseudopotentials split into a standard and a stringent accuracy table. In total around 70.000 calculations were performed to test the pseudopotentials. The process of developing the final table led to new insights into the effects of both the core-valence partitioning and the non-linear core corrections on the stability, convergence, and transferability of norm-conserving pseudopotentials. ..., Comment: abstract truncated, 17 pages, 25 figures, 8 tables

Fully-nonlocal two-projector norm-conserving pseudopotentials are shown to be compatible with a systematic approach to the optimization of convergence with the size of the plane-wave basis. A new formulation of the optimization is developed, including the ability to apply it to positive-energy atomic scattering states, and to enforce greater continuity in the pseudopotential. The generalization of norm-conservation to multiple projectors is reviewed and recast for the present purposes. Comparisons among the results of all-electron and one- and two-projector norm-conserving pseudopotential calculations of lattice constants and bulk moduli are made for a group of solids chosen to represent a variety of types of bonding and a sampling of the periodic table.

We review the formalisms of the self-consistent GW approximation to many-body perturbation theory and of the generation of optimally-localized Wannier functions from groups of energy bands. We show that the quasiparticle Bloch wave functions from such GW calculations can be used within this Wannier framework. These Wannier functions can be used to interpolate the many-body band structure from the coarse mesh of Brillouin zone points on which it is known from the initial calculation to the usual symmetry lines, and we demonstrate that this procedure is accurate and efficient for the self-consistent GW band structure. The resemblance of these Wannier functions to the bond orbitals discussed in the chemical community led us to expect differences between density-functional and many-body functions that could be qualitatively interpreted. The atomic-level control achievable in artificially-structured oxide superlattices provides a unique opportunity to explore interface phases of matter including high-density 2D electron gases. Electronic-structure calculations show that the charge distribution of the 2D gas is strongly modulated by electron-phonon interactions with significant ionic polarization. Anharmonic finite-temperature effects must be included to reproduce experiment. The methods of density-functional perturbation theory may be used to calculate various physical response properties of insulating crystals including elastic, dielectric, Born charge, and piezoelectric tensors. These and other important tensors may be defined as second derivatives of the total energy with respect to atomic-displacement, electric-field, or strain perturbations, or as mixed derivatives with respect to two of these perturbations. The resulting tensor quantities tend to be coupled in complex ways in polar crystals, giving rise to a variety of variant definitions. For example, it is generally necessary to distinguish between elastic tensors defined under different electrostatic boundary conditions, and between dielectric tensors defined under different elastic boundary conditions. Here, we describe an approach for computing all of these various response tensors in a unified and systematic fashion. The direct calculation of the elastic and piezoelectric tensors of solids can be accomplished by treating homogeneous strain within the framework of density-functional perturbation theory. By formulating the energy functional in reduced coordinates, we show that the strain perturbation enters only through metric tensors, and can be treated in a manner exactly paralleling the treatment of other perturbations. We present an analysis of the strain perturbation of the plane-wave pseudopotential functional, including the internal strain terms necessary to treat the atomic-relaxation contributions. A globally-adaptive curvilinear coordinate formalism is shown to be easily convertible to a class of curvilinear transformations locally optimized around atom sites by a few parameters. Parameter transferability is established for a demanding test case, and the results of the two methods are shown to be comparable.
