We aimed to report the 30-day mortality and morbidity of all curative and palliative anti-cancer treatments.Patients and Methods: Adults with solid and hematological malignancies from two large cancer centers in Saudi Arabia, irrespective of the cancer stage and treatment type, were included in this retrospective observational study.Results: Between December 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020, 1694 patients from King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah and King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh were included in the study. Among them, 77.5% were younger than 65 years of age; 72.8% were female; the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension was 35%, 34%, and 28%, respectively; and 66.5% of patients had breast and gastrointestinal cancers. Fifty-nine (3.5%) patients died within 30 days of receiving anti-cancer treatment. Of them, 9 (0.3%) were treated with curative intent, and 50 (3%) were treated with palliative intent.Conclusion: Our results emphasize the need to address preventable metabolic changes and implement innovative, predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) approaches focusing on patient profiles. Reporting the 30-day outcomes of all anti-cancer treatments will also allow the identification of factors underlying mortality and morbidity and lead to an improvement in oncological outcomes via innovative programs designed to improve clinical decision-making.Keywords: cancer, chemotherapy, morbidity, individual outcome, predictive preventive personalized medicine

Protostrongylids, small nematode lungworms, are an integral part of the wild ruminant helminth community, which can damage animals’ health when they are held in captivity or semi-captive conditions. The Sahelo-Saharan antelope species dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas), the scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), and the addax (Addax nasomacculatus), reintroduced to Souss-Massa National Park in Morocco, could be host to many species of Protostrongylids. This study was conducted from January to July 2015 to identify infecting parasite species, and determine their prevalence and abundance in all three antelope species. A total of 180 individual fecal samples were collected, morphologically examined by the Baermann technique, and molecularly identified by PCR amplification and sequencing of the second internal transcribed spacer region of the rDNA (ITS-2).

An approach to evaluate the microwave-detected photoconductance decay (MWPCD) is developed, which allows to extract the minority carrier lifetime as a function of the excess carrier density from a single MWPCD measurement. The method is shown to be applicable to thin (w≤200 μm) silicon wafers with low minority carrier recombination at the surfaces and bulk lifetimes in the range of about 1–100 μs. Comparison of the MWPCD results with minority carrier lifetime measurements using the quasi-steady-state photoconductance method reveals very good agreement between both types of measurement. Only when the photoconductance exceeds 30% of the dark conductivity, is a deviation observed, because then the MWPCD signal is no longer directly proportional to the excess carrier density. Minority carrier trapping is found to affect the MWPCD signal only in the tail of the measured photoconductance decay. The evaluation method is used to map the interstitial iron content with high spatial resolution, as well as to determine the minority carrier trap density. An excellent agreement between numerical simulation and measured MWPCD signal is found revealing the assumptions made for the evaluation approach to be valid. This evaluation of the MWPCD measurement is well suited to characterize silicon of low purity and low crystalline quality, which is often employed to solar cells with high spatial resolution. A detailed study on the quality and morphology of a-Ti[O.sub.2] thin films crystallized by single shot excimer laser irradiation at different laser fluences is reported. The fractal and nucleation theories are applied to explain the laser-induced saturation mechanisms.

Abstract Background Flavonoids, which existed nearly in all fruits and vegetables, are considered as a class of plant-secondary metabolites with a polyphenolic structure and have properties with health-improving potential. Yet, not so many experimental focus on the benefits of flavonoid in vivo after external application. Here we assessed the impacts of naringin in vitro and in vivo in the human glioma U-87 cells implanted into athymic mice. Methods Tumor size and animal survival time were followed in naringin-treated mice bearing subcutaneous gliomas. To define the effects of naringin on angiogenesis, in vitro, tube formation and migration were assayed using endothelial HUVEC cell line. Results Low concentration of naringin remarkably inhibited tubulogenesis and reduced cell invasion. Moreover, naringin has been shown to have a toxicity effect on U-87 cells in a dose-dependent way. Furthermore, naringin administration (120 mg/kg/day) applies serious anti-cancer belongings on glioblastoma, as demonstrated by a slow cancer progression. Conclusions Our study has provided the first evidence on the antitumor effect of naringin, which is somehow due to the inhibition of invasion and angiogenesis.

SARS-CoV-2 has caused a huge pandemic affecting millions of people and resulting innumerous deaths. A better understanding of the correlation between binding antibodies and neutralizing antibodies is necessary to address protective immunity post-infection or vaccination. Here, we investigate the humoral immune response and the seroprevalence of neutralizing antibodies following vaccination with adenovirus-based vector in 177 serum samples. A Microneutralization (MN) assay was used as a reference method to assess whether neutralizing antibody titers correlated with a positive signal in two commercially available serological tests:a rapid lateral flow immune-chromatographic assay (LFIA) and an enzyme-linked Fluorescence Assay (ELFA). Neutralizing antibodies were detected in most serum samples (84%). COVID-19 convalescent individuals showed high antibody titers and significant neutralizing activity. Spearman correlation coefficients between the serological and neutralization results ranged from 0.8 to 0.9, suggesting a moderate to strong correlation between commercial immunoassays test results (LFIA and ELFA) and virus neutralization.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the implementation of Turkish foreign policies and the government support as the key drivers of promoting international students to study in Turkey. As a way of internationalization of higher education, the study also reviewed the recent development of migration policies and the Grand Student Projects Support as related to the trends of international student movement in Turkey as compared to the other countries in the world. In this literature review article, a search for required and reliable source of information has been made with regard to the subject area using computer and electronic databases; Organization for Co-operation and Development (OECD), Routledge, SAGE, Council of Higher Education of Turkey (CoHE) and The Ministry of National Education of Turkey (MoNE), UNESCO Institution for statistics, Turkish National Education Statistics and other reliable sources. The study findings indicate that the Turkish government and higher education institutions (HEIs) continue to recognize the importance of international students as their number increased more doubled than in the past two decades. The growing number of international students studying in Turkey has largely been driven by the Turkish scholarship initiative programs and migration policy reforms. Further, student immigration plays major role in strengthening peace friendly and the tie between Turkey and other nations by demonstrating the educational and cultural interest.

Abstract Background Pyrethroids, such as bifenthrin (BF), are among the most widely used class of insecticides that pose serious risks to human and wildlife health. Pyrethroids are proposed to affect astrocytic functions and to cause neuron injury in the central nervous system (CNS). Microglia are key cells involved in innate immune responses in the CNS, and microglia activation has been linked to inflammation and neurotoxicity. However, little information is known about the effects of BF-induced toxicity in primary microglial cells as well as in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures (OHSCs). Methods Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses induced by BF were evaluated in primary microglial cells and OHSCs incubated with different concentrations of BF (1–20 μM) for 4 and 24 h. mRNA and protein synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nuclear erythroid-2 like factor-2 (Nrf-2), and microsomal prostaglandin synthase-1 (mPGES-1) was also studied by qPCR and Western blot. Cell viability was analyzed by MTT-tetrazolio (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays. Neurotoxicity in OHSCs was analyzed by propidium iodide (PI) staining and confocal microscopy. Results Exposure of microglial cells to BF for 24 h resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in the number of viable cells. At sub-cytotoxic concentrations, BF increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), TNF-alpha synthesis, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, at both 4- and 24-h time points, respectively. Furthermore, BF incubation decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and increased lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and H2O2 formation. In addition, BF significantly induced protein synthesis and mRNA expression of oxidative and inflammatory mediators after 4 and 24 h, including Nrf-2, COX-2, mPGES-1, and nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB). A 24-h exposure of OHSCs to BF also increased neuronal death compared to untreated controls. Furthermore, depletion of microglia from OHSCs potently enhanced neuronal death induced by BF. Conclusions Overall, BF exhibited cytotoxic effects in primary microglial cells, accompanied by the induction of various inflammatory and oxidative stress markers including the Nrf-2/COX-2/mPGES-1/NF-kappaB pathways. Moreover, the study provided evidence that BF induced neuronal death in OHSCs and suggests that microglia exert a protective function against BF toxicity.

Dans le cadre des pays développés, la publication des indices de gouvernance qui synthétisent l’ensemble des mécanismes de contrôle a entraîné la profiliation des travaux empiriques. Toutefois, les recherches qui ont tenté d’établir une relation entre l’indice de gouvernance et la structure de capital sont très rares (Friedman, Johnson et Mitton, 2003; Jiraporn, 2004; et Litov, 2005) et les résultats trouvés sont souvent mitigés. Ainsi l’objectif recherché dans le présent article est d’appréhender la relation entre la structure de gouvernance et le comportement des entreprises en matière d’endettement. Dans le cadre des pays en voie de développement, il s’avère très difficile d’établir un indice de gouvernance qui stipule la qualité des mécanismes de gouvernance à l’image des travaux portant sur le cadre anglo-saxon. En s’inspirant des travaux qui arguent qu’un bon système de gouvernance des entreprises permet généralement de limiter les irrégularités et le lissage des résultats, nous retenons la propension de la manipulation comptable comme un Proxy qui décrit le degré d’efficacité des mécanismes de gouvernance. En se basant sur un échantillon de 41 entreprises tunisiennes, nos résultats ont montré que la variable « accruals discrétionnaires » qui mesure le niveau de manipulation des résultats et qui met l’accent sur la défaillance des mécanismes de gouvernance affecte positivement le recours à l’endettement. Ce résultat confirme les prédictions de la théorie d’agence (Jensen et Meckling, 1976) et la théorie du Free Cash-flows de Jensen (1986). Par ailleurs, nous avons retenu un sous échantillon regroupant seulement les firmes contrôlées. Lorsque le ratio d’endettement est mesuré en valeur du marché, la relation entre la propension de manipulation comptable et l’endettement devienne négative. Ce résultat semble se positionner par rapport au débat portant sur la concentration du capital, l’expropriation des actionnaires minoritaires et le recours à l’endettement (Johnson et al., 2000; Leuz et al., 2003; et Faccio et al., 2004).

Purpose: To measure the out-of-field doses for various treatment planning techniques and assess the impact on fetal dose with and without the use of custom shielding., Materials and Methods: A total of six treatment plans were generated with different treatment techniques such as 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), utilizing both 6 MV flattened beams and flattening filter-free (FFF) beams. The measurements were carried out both out-of-field at the surface and at depth to assess the dose reduction achieved by removing the flattening filter and incorporating shielding., Results: The custom-made frame shielding can effectively reduce the surface dose with a maximum reduction of 15.2% observed in VMAT plans and achieve a maximum reduction of 100% for cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Out-of-field dose measurements conducted at depth, positioned 58 cm inferior to the target isocenter, reveal that the shielding effectiveness consistently remains the greatest for 3DCRT technique. A maximum reduction of 21% is observed when utilizing a flattening filter-free beam., Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the 3DCRT technique exhibits the least amount of scatter radiation both near and far from the treatment isocenter, which is the most suitable approach for radiation therapy of pregnant patients. In cases where meeting dose constraints for critical organs becomes challenging, VMAT technique emerges as the most suitable treatment technique for reducing out-of-field doses. Pathogenic bacterial biofilms present significant challenges, particularly in food safety and material deterioration. Therefore, using Enterococcus mundtii A2, known for its antagonistic activity against pathogen adhesion, could serve as a novel strategy to reduce pathogenic colonization within the food sector. This study aimed to investigate the biofilm-forming ability of E. mundtii A2, isolated from camel milk, on two widely used stainless steels within the agri-food domain and to assess its anti-adhesive properties against various pathogens, especially on stainless steel 316L. Additionally, investigations into auto-aggregation and co-aggregation were also conducted. Plate count methodologies revealed increased biofilm formation by E. mundtii A2 on 316L, followed by 304L. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed a dense yet thin biofilm layer, playing a critical role in reducing the adhesion of L. monocytogenes CECT 4032 and Staphylococcus aureus CECT 976, with a significant reduction of ≈ 2 Log CFU/cm 2 . However, Gram-negative strains, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and E. coli ATCC 25922, exhibit modest adhesion reduction (~ 0.7 Log CFU/cm 2 ). Hospital-acquired infections involving carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae pose significant challenges in the intensive care units. The lack of novel antimicrobial drugs amplifies the urgency to explore innovative management strategies. Nanotechnology, with its ability to generate nanoparticles possessing specific properties beneficial in drug delivery and nanomedicine, stands as a pivotal research domain. The objective of this study was to synthesize, for the first time, biologically silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) from Lavandula mairei Humbert (L. mairei) plant. The biosynthesized Ag-NPs were characterized by UV-visible spectral analysis, X-Ray diffraction Analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Subsequently, the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Ag-NPs were assessed using the micro-dilution method, DPPH test and FRAP assay, respectively. The green-synthesized Ag-NPs exhibited high antibacterial activity against ESBL-producing multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains and against carbapenem-resistant and non-carbapenem-resistant strains of A. baumannii, as well as a very interesting antioxidant activity. The present study suggests that these results hold very promising for the potential application of biologically synthesized Ag-NPs from L. mairei (Ag-LM-NPs) in the invention of novel antibacterial and antioxidant agents., (© 2024. This study focused on optimizing the fermentation-based production of Exopolysaccharides (EPS) from Enterococcus faecium F58 initially isolated from traditional Moroccan Jben, a fresh goat cheese. Using the central composite design, yeast extract, MnSO 4 , and time affect EPS concentration. The highest experimental and predicted EPS production yields were 2.46 g/L ± 0.38 and 2.86 g/L, respectively. Optimal concentrations of yeast extract (4.46 g/L) and MnSO4 (0.011 g/L) were identified after 26 h at 30 °C. Characterization of EPS was conducted using SEM with EDX, XRD, and FTIR analyses. These tests revealed a specific morphology and an amorphous structure. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis indicated adequate EPS stability up to 200 °C with anti-adhesion properties against different pathogens. Enterococcus species are commensal organisms of the gastrointestinal tract and can also be isolated from traditional food products. They are used as probiotics in animals and less often in humans. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial and anti-adhesive activities of twelve food-origin Enterococcus spp. biofilms on stainless steel AISI 316 L against foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes CECT4032, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853, and Escherichia coli ATCC25922. The antimicrobial and co-aggregation abilities of Enterococcus spp. were evaluated using spots-agar test and spectrophotometry aggregation assay, respectively. The anti-adhesive activity of selected strains on pathogenic bacteria was tested using serial dilution technique. Enterococci strains in planktonic mode showed strong inhibition activity against different pathogens tested with a significant difference in co-aggregation capacity. Moreover, L. monocytogenes and E. coli presented a low auto-aggregation rate compared to P. aeruginosa, which showed an amount of 11.25%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that biofilm biomass of Enterococcus spp. increased after 10 days. The thick layer of enterococci biofilms on AISI 316 L caused a low adhesion of L. monocytogenes, resulting in a reduction of approximately 2.8 log CFU/cm² for some selected strains. Additionally, Enterococcus monocultures' biofilms were more efficient than polymicrobial cultures (a cocktail of enterococci strains) in controlling pathogen adhesion. This study aimed to assess, for the first time, the anti-adhesion and antibiofilm effects of Lavandula mairei Humbert essential oil against multidrug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii . Scanning electron microscope was used for visualizing its antibiofilm activity and the effect of this oil on surface physicochemical parameters was examined as a possible anti-adhesive target. Chemical analysis of Lavandulaa mairei essential oil showed a high content of carvacrol composition (79.12%). The oil tested exhibited antibacterial efficacy with inhibition diameters of 33 to 37.33 mm and minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of 1.56 µl ml -1 . The oil inhibited adhesion by 83.66%, detach 73.30% of adherent cells and eliminated 64.02% of the biofilm compared to the untreated control. Lavandula mairei essential oil has proven its possible application as a preventive strategy by intervening in the initial adhesion of Acinetobacter baumannii to polystyrene.

This work describes the spatiotemporal analysis of microplastics (MPs) pollution in sediments collected on a high urbanized beach located in Taghazout coast, central Atlantic part of Morocco. The study area is mainly composed of moderately well-sorted fine sands with an average density of MPs that ranged between 915 MPs/kg in 2018 and 1448 MPs/kg in 2019. The most polluted sites were in the south part of Taghazout coast, close to facilities of where beachgoers are often found. Microplastic Pollution Index (MPPI), Microplastic Impact Coefficient (CMPI), Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC), and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) revealed spatiotemporal variation of MPs pollution. Thus, the principal component analysis (PCA) showed a low correlation between the sediment characteristics (i.e., grain size, sorting, skewness) and MPs densities. Overall, the outputs of this baseline recommend implementing plastic management strategies to eliminate or at least minimize the collateral effects generated by MPs pollution in sediments of urbanized beaches., (Copyright © 2022. Glioblastoma is a common primary brain tumor that has a high mortality rate. Reports of intrathoracic metastases are uncommon, with the most commonly reported site for metastases are the lung and pleura. However, involvement of the mediastinum is not well documented, and few reports of confirmed mediastinal metastases diagnosed by endobronchial ultrasound-transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) exist. Herein, we report a rare case of metastatic glioblastoma to the thorax. A lady in her 40s has been previously diagnosed with intracranial glioblastoma with multiple incidences of disease recurrence despite treatment with chemoradiotherapy, adjuvant chemotherapy, and repeated surgical resections. She presented with dyspnea and pleural effusion, for which radiological imaging revealed lung, pleural, and mediastinal lesions. Further diagnostic workup with EBUS and pleural fluid sampling confirmed metastatic disease to both sites. The pleural fluid showed highly atypical cells positive for GFAP, and EBUS-TBNA immunostains were GFAP, S100, and synaptophysin positive, giving an overall picture consistent with metastatic glioblastoma.
