Abstract

In this paper the problems of integrable and linearizable Lotka-Volterra equations with $(\delta:-3 \delta:\delta)$-resonance are studied. The necessary conditions for both problems are obtained in the case when $\delta=1$ and it's sufficiency are proved. It is also shown that non-standard analysis has an important role in proving the sufficient integrable conditions in some cases. The non-standard analysis approaches have been used for both perturbed and unperturbed cases for integral aspects of the given system.

Abstract

Background: Patients >40 years with an atrial septal defect (ASD) may have atrial arrhythmia which warrants treatment. It is unclear whether preventive left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion should be performed simultaneously during ASD closure in these patients. Objective: This study aimed to examine the incidence of de novo atrial arrhythmia in patients >40 years old post transcatheter closure of ASD. Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective study involving all consecutive patients who have undergone device closure of ASDs at age >40 years. Standard 12-lead ECGs were performed pre-procedure and during every clinic follow-up. Ambulatory monitors were applied when indicated. Results: Eighty-eight patients (mean age: 51.81 ± 8.01 years; male: 22.7%) were recruited and followed up over a median duration of 3.6 years (range: 1–6.5). Seven patients (8%) had documented atrial arrhythmia (AA) pre and post ASD closure. Two patients (2.5%) developed de novo atrial fibrillation and one patient (1.2%), ectopic atrial rhythm during follow-up. In univariate analyses, age >61.3 years (p 25.15cm2 pre-closure (p = 0.004); dilated right and left atrium immediately post ASD closure (p = 0.016 & 0.001) and pulmonary vascular resistance >1.31Woods unit (p = 0.036) were associated with increased risk of AA. However, on multivariate analyses, none were significantly associated with AA. Conclusions: De novo atrial arrhythmia after ASD device closure is uncommon.

Abstract

The adsorbate dynamics during simultaneous action of desorption and lateral adsorbate diffusion is studied in a simple lattice-gas model by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the action of the coverage-conserving diffusion process during the course of the desorption has two distinct, competing effects: a general acceleration of the desorption process, and a coarsening of the adsorbate configuration through Ostwald ripening. The balance between these two effects is governed by the structure of the adsorbate layer at the beginning of the desorption process.

21. Parameter Estimation by Density Functional Theory for a Lattice-gas Model of Br and Cl Chemisorption on Ag(100)

Abstract

We study Bromine and Chlorine chemisorption on a Ag(100) surface, using a lattice-gas model and the quantum-mechanical Density Functional Theory (DFT) method. In this model the Br and Cl ions adsorb at the fourfold hollow sites of the Ag(100) surface, which can be represented by a square lattice of adsorption sites. Five different coverages were used for each kind of adsorbate. For each adsorbate and coverage, we obtained the minimum-energy configuration, its energy, and its charge distribution. From these data we calculated dipole moments, lateral interaction energies, and binding energies. Our results show that for Br the lateral interactions obtained by fitting to the adsorption energies obtained from the DFT calculation are consistent with long-range dipole-dipole lateral interactions obtained using the dipole moments calculated from the DFT charge distribution. For Cl we found that, while the long-range dipole-dipole lateral interactions are important, short-range attractive interactions are also present. Our results are overall consistent with parameter estimates previously obtained by fitting room-temperature Monte Carlo simulations to electrochemical adsorption isotherms [I.\ Abou Hamad et al., J.\ Electroanal. Chem.\ 554 (2003), 211; Electrochim.\ Acta 50 (2005), 5518].

Abstract

Many partitioning methods may be used to partition a network into smaller clusters while minimizing the number of cuts needed. However, other considerations must also be taken into account when a network represents a real system such as a power grid. In this paper we use a simulated annealing Monte Carlo (MC) method to optimize initial clusters on the Florida high-voltage power-grid network that were formed by associating each load with its "closest" generator. Abstract

Based on large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we propose a new charging method that should be capable of charging a Lithium-ion battery in a fraction of the time needed when using traditional methods. This charging method uses an additional applied oscillatory electric field. Our simulation results show that this charging method offers a great reduction in the average intercalation time for Li+ ions, which dominates the charging time. The oscillating field not only increases the diffusion rate of Li+ ions in the electrolyte but, more importantly, also enhances intercalation by lowering the corresponding overall energy barrier., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We propose a new, cyclic-voltammetry based experimental technique that can not only differentiate between discontinuous and continuous phase transitions in an adsorbate layer, but also quite accurately recover equilibrium behavior from dynamic analysis of systems with a continuous phase transition. The Electrochemical first-order reversal curve (EC-FORC) diagram for a discontinuous phase transition (nucleation and growth), such as occurs in underpotential deposition, is characterized by a negative region, while such a region does not exist for a continuous phase transition, such as occurs in the electrosorption of Br on Ag(100). Moreover, for systems with a continuous phase transition, the minima of the individual EC-FORCs trace the equilibrium curve, even at very high scan rates. Since obtaining experimental data for the EC-FORC method would require only a simple reprogramming of the potentiostat used in conventional cyclic-voltammetry experiments, we believe that this method has significant potential for easy, rapid, in-situ analysis of systems undergoing electrochemical deposition., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 211th ECS Meeting

Abstract

Background Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment landscape of hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2−) metastatic breast cancer, with an impressive efficacy and safety profile. Cytopenia is the main adverse event, which is both predictable and manageable. Here, we report a case of CDK4/6 inhibitor-induced vitiligo-like lesions. Vitiligo or vitiligo-like lesions are a rare adverse event; only a few cases are reported in the literature. Case Presentation A 71-year-old female patient was diagnosed initially with early-stage right breast cancer (HR+/HER2−) and was treated with breast-conserving surgery followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormonal therapy. A few years later, she developed metastatic disease to the hilar lymph nodes, and to multiple skeletal sites, including the left scapula, left shoulder, left iliac bone, and dorsal vertebrae, for which she was treated with ribociclib and letrozole. While on treatment, she developed hypopigmented lesions involving both hands, feet, and face, which were described as vitiligo-like lesions. Conclusion CDK4/6 inhibitor-induced vitiligo is a rare and unpredictable adverse event. This case report highlights the rarity of this adverse event, the dilemma related to the optimal treatment, and decisions related to continuation, holding, or switching CDK4/6 inhibitors.

48. Entecavir for the treatment of real-life chronic hepatitis B patients: a study from Saudi Arabia

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Entecavir is a nucleoside analog used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. The efficacy of ETV has not been studied in the Saudi population. The objective of the study was to find undetectable HBV DNA after 48 weeks completion of ETV treatment in real-life versus clinical trial patients. DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective study in a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia of patients treated from 2006 January to 2010 June. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 43 eligible patients, 24 patients were treatment-naïve and 19 were treatment refractory. RESULTS: Mean HBV DNA viral load was 51 million IU/mL prior to treatment and decreased to 0.16 million IU/mL at 48 weeks. Mean HBV DNA log10 IU/mL was 6.3 before treatment and decreased to 2.3 log10 IU/mL (P=.001) at 48 weeks. After 48 weeks treatment, ALT significantly decreased from a mean ALT of 88.7 U/L before treatment to 37.5U/L (P=.04). After 48 weeks, the HBV DNA was undetectable in 14 (58.4%) in treatment-naïve patients and in 6 (31.6%) treatment-refractory patients. At 48 weeks 17 (60.7%) of HBeAg-negative patients and 3 (20%) HBeAg-positive patients achieved undetectable HBV DNA (P=.003). When the treatment was extended for a median of 24 months (range 12 months to 60 months), 29 (67.4%) achieved undetectable HBV DNA. Among 29 patients who achieved undetectable HBV DNA, the treatment refractory patients reached undetectability within a mean of 32.4 (18.6) months and treatment-naïve patients in a mean of 18.8 (10.5) months (P=.01). Two (13.3%) of HBeAg-reactive patients converted to HBeAg-negative status and one patient (2.3%) lost HBsAg. CONCLUSION: After treatment with entecavir, HBV DNA undetectable at 48 weeks in 58.4% of naïve patients. The response rate was better in HBeAg-negative and treatment-naïve patients compared to HBeAg-positive and treatment-refractory patients.

Abstract

The work in this paper is a continuation of the recent work in [10] that the local integrability of a three dimensional Lotka-Volterra system is studied. More precisely, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of two independent analytic first integrals of the considered system. Here, in this paper, for particular parametric subsystems of threedimensional Lotka-Volterra systems in [10], the non-existence of polynomial first integrals are investigated. Moreover, we mainly used the contradiction technique to prove that the given subsystems admits no polynomial first integrals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
