7. "'As In Life, So in Drama': COVID, the NHS and the 'Very Special' Return of Casualty ".

Abstract

In January 2021 the BBC continuing medical drama Casualty (1986-present) returned to UK television screens for the start of its thirty-fifth series, with the premiere serving as the first episode of the show to have been produced and broadcast since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused production to stop suddenly in March 2020. It was, in many ways, a "Very Special Episode," and not least because it was the first new episode of the series to be seen by audiences for four months. Set during spring and summer of 2020, the episode begins with a title card that reads "June 2020. Days into the lockdown: 90." This article takes the position that this first episode of Casualty to screen on UK television following the March 2020 production shutdown (Ritman 2020) is productively understood as a "Very Special Episode" (VSE), with a view to arguing for its status as quietly radical television. 14. Postfeminist fatherhood and contemporary Hollywood stardom

Abstract

Contemporary Hollywood cinema is rife with representations of fatherhood, and such depictions have been mediated most visibly and ubiquitously through major stars such as Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks and Eddie Murphy, via their screen personae and wider publicity images. This is indicative of a media culture inflected with values specific to a postfeminist ideological climate. Postfeminism operates to naturalise these images of fatherhood as both progressive in terms of the gender politics they purport to depict, and inevitable given the effects, perceived or otherwise, of second-wave feminism on contemporary Western consensuses regarding parenting and gender equity. This representational phenomenon is also symptomatic of a socio-political state of affairs with a hegemonic ideological viewpoint, perpetuated with aid from these judiciously mediated images of postfeminist fatherhood, that have emerged from a media culture that seems superficially to dissipate the insidious aspects of this postfeminist yet patriarchal ideology.

Abstract

This is the edited text of a roundtable held at City University London, UK in November 2014, organised by Alison Winch and Jo Littler. The event aimed to pay attention to the ways in which age and generation shape mediated conversation about feminist politics: to problematise the dominant media representations of intergenerational “cat fights,” or feminist bickering, while simultaneously interrogating the ways in which mediated conflicts and connections shape the potential to work together to enact feminist social change. It therefore aimed to explore a number of different questions in relation to this issue, including: what kind of shared conversations do women have across age groups, and how do these circulate in media cultures? How can intergenerational alliances be built while still remaining sensitive to differences of experience? How are feminist connections being formed by digital media, technology, and platforms? How is feminist conflict mediated, and how might it operate productively?
