4. Group consensus and psychological well-being: a large field study

Abstract

Models of group process propose that stressful social environments develop when there is a lack of consensus among group members about issues of relevance to the group. based on these models, we expected that levels of consensus would be positively related to the average levels of psychological well-being in naturally occurring work groups. An examination of data from 3,546 respondents within 73 work groups revealed that levels of consensus about leadership and peer relations were positively related to the average psychological well-being of the group members, even after controlling for absolute level effects and covariates. In contrast, levels of consensus were not related to the average psychological well-being of group members when identical analyses were conducted using pseudogroups.

5. Individual and nomothetic models of job stress: an examination of work hours, cohesion, and well-being

Abstract

Many models of job stress are implicitly based on the assumption that there is considerable variability in how individuals perceive and respond to their environments. In this paper, we introduce a nomothetic perspective of job stress. The nomothetic perspective assumes that despite individual differences there will be consistencies in how groups of individuals perceive and respond to similar work environments. To contrast the individual and nomothetic perspectives, we analyzed data from 7,382 respondents from 99 groups. In the analyses, we examined individual- and group-level relationships using both real groups and randomly formed groups. The results revealed that respondents from the same work group agreed about perceptions of the work climate. The results also revealed that both individual and nomothetic perspectives were useful in describing the relationship between cohesion and psychological well-being. The relationship between work hours and psychological well-being, however, was best modeled from a nomothetic perspective.

Abstract

Over 350,000 US soldiers were in the Persian Gulf Region during Operation Desert Shield and Storm (ODS/S). This deployment required rapid short-notice deployment of Active Army Units and Army Reserve and National Guard Unit Soldiers. The Individual Ready Reserve soldier was the focus of the present study. Given the fact that the reserve soldiers differ from active duty soldiers on a number of dimensions, the unique deployment and activation experiences of IRR soldiers offers a number of valuable lessons regarding the effects of stressors, stress buffers, mediators, and family and unit support. Of the findings, two were most significant: (1) Because Individual Ready Reservists were not a part of any particular unit, they and their families felt isolated in many respects and (2) soldiers and their families were still experiencing impact from their deployments several years after Operation Desert Shield and Storm.

14. Psychological Well-Being and Physical Health Symptoms of Soldiers Deployed for Operation Uphold Democracy. A Summary of Human Dimensions Research in Haiti.

Abstract

A Human Dimensions Research (HDR) team was formed and sent to Haiti to assess the psychological status and adaptation of the U.S. Army force deployed for Operation Uphold Democracy. Research questionnaires were collected from 3,205 soldiers, interviews were conducted with 267 soldiers, and 1,250 soldiers provided 2,650 verbatim comments regarding the operation which were content analyzed. The HDR results demonstrated that, when viewed as a population, soldiers deployed to Haiti did not report unusually high levels of psychological distress or physical health symptoms. Subsamples of individuals did report elevated reports of psychological distress and physical health symptoms. Four sets of factors are discussed which were found to be significantly related to the well-being of soldiers in Haiti: (1) stress associated with the operational environment, (2) stress due to family separation, (3) unit and work issues, and (4) broader policy issues. The results have implications for unit leaders at all levels, mental health and medical personnel, and policy makers. Eight lessons learned from the Human Dimensions Research in Haiti are discussed.
