Objective: Ministry of Health of Turkey issued a legislation to use only modified electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in 2005, and this study aimed to assess satisfaction and attitude of bipolar patients regarding modified and unmodified electroconvulsive therapy.Methods: A total of 100 patients (50 treated with modified electroconvulsive therapy (M-ECT) and 50 treated with unmodified ECT (UM-ECT) with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder (depressive or manic episode) were invited to participate in this study. Patients with euthymic mood were included. Satisfaction and attitude towards ECT were evaluated with a structured attitude questionnaire, and M-ECT and UM-ECT patients, and their subgroups (depressive vs. manic) were compared.Results: No significant differences were found between M-ECT and UM-ECT groups regarding age, sex, marital status and occupation. The majority of all patients (78%) were satisfied from treatment with ECT and with the outcome (88%), without significant differences between modified and unmodified groups. Forgetfulness (70%) and headaches (57%) occurred in all groups, with the only significant difference in forgetfulness being reported by more manic patients treated with UM-ECT. Depressive and manic patients treated with UM-ECT reported concerns of brain damage and physical harm significantly more frequently. While 86% of patients treated with M-ECT consented to a future treatment, this was significantly less in patients treated with UM-ECT (50%).Conclusions: Bipolar patients report a high degree of satisfaction treated either with modified or unmodified ECT but there was a significant difference in perception of adverse effects and willingness for receiving ECT in future.

Tourette’s Syndrome is developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by stereotypic, non-rhythmic multiple motor and/or vocal tics. In rare cases, severe tics which can be life-threatening or self-mutilating may be observed in Tourette Syndrome. These types of cases that involve severe self-injurious behavior are called malignant Tourette’s Syndrome. In this report, we present an adult case of Tourette Syndrome with vision loss as a result of recurrent and severe ocular self-mutilative tics.

Purpose: The impairment the quality of life in schizophrenia should be seen as a public health problem rather than a psychiatric approach. The aim of this study was to improve the life quality of the patients with schizophrenia in terms of providing a different approach in order to examine the alexithymia. Material and Methods: This study was conducted with patients who were treated a outpatients in Erenköy Mental and Nervous Diseases Training and Research Hospital Psychotic Disorders and Schizophrenia Outpatient Clinic. The data collection form, the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF-TR) and the 20- item Toronto Alexithymia Scale were administered to 152 patients with schizophrenia who accepted to participate in this study. Results: The life quality of the alexithymic patients with schizophrenia compared to non-alexithymic patients with schizophrenia, in all sub-scales were found to be statistically significantly lower. Materyal ve Metod: Bu çalışma Erenköy Ruh ve Sinir Hastalıkları Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Psikotik Bozukluklar ve Şizofreni Özel Dal Polikliniği’nde ayaktan takip edilen hastalarla yürütüldü. Çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 152 şizofreni tanılı hastalara, veri toplama formu, Dünya Sağlık Örgütü Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği-Kısa Formu (WHOQOLBREF-TR) ve 20 maddeli Toronto Aleksitimi Ölçeği uygulandı. Bulgular: Aleksitimik olan şizofreni hastalarının olmayanlara göre, yaşam kalitesi tüm alt ölçeklerinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olarak düşük olduğu saptandı. Tüm hasta grubunda aleksitimi toplam puan ve alt boyut puanlarının, yaşam kalitesi alt ölçekleriyle olan ilişkilerinde tüm ilişkilerin anlamlılık seviyesinde olduğu görüldü. Sonuç: Şizofreni tanılı bireyler aleksitimik olup olmamaya göre ikiye ayrıldığında, aleksitimik olan grup yaşam kalitesinin her alanında olumsuz etkilenmektedir. Şizofrenide kötü seyir ve sonuçlanma ve doğal olarak gelişen bozulmuş yaşam kalitesine aleksitiminin etkisi olduğu görülmektedir

WOS: 000349324400004, Objective: The effect of the presence of cluster B personality disorders which are frequent comorbidities with bipolar I disorder on the coping strategies was investigated and also it was studied whether there was a different profile. Methods: The patients who were in remission period and had bipolar disorder were included in the study. All things considered, we included 50 male and 50 female patients who had bipolar I disorder in remission period with cluster B personality disorder, and 50 male and 50 female patients without cluster B personality disorder. SCID-I and SCID-II were used respectively. The COPE scale was also given to determine patients' coping styles. Results: In terms of coping styles, the patients with cluster B personality disorder had higher dysfunctional coping styles scores. There were no significant differences for problem-focused coping scores, and emotion-focused coping scores among those patients. When the subscales were examined, the scores of focusing on emotions and expressing emotions, denial, retraining, and substance use subscales were higher among the patients with cluster B personality disorder. Conclusion: When the coping styles of bipolar patient groups those were divided according to having cluster B personality disorder or not were compared, it was seen that the group with cluster B personality disorder were using more dysfunctional coping styles. These findings can be important with regards to psychosocial interventions. Our findings must be replicated with larger and different comorbidity groups.

Purpose: Cognitive functions in schizophrenia have been reported to be reliable predictors and correlates of psychosocial skill and community outcome. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship with frontal functions in patients with schizophrenia to alexithymia dimensions, which is before the onset of clinical signs of deterioration as an indicator. Material and Methods: This study was conducted with patients who were treated as outpatients in Erenkoy Mental and Nervous Diseases Training and Research Hospital Psychotic Disorders and Schizophrenia Outpatient Clinic. The data collection form, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale were administered to 152 patients with schizophrenia who accepted to participate in this study. Results: Of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia alexithymia total score and subscale scores, frontal function and in their relations with sub-scale, was observed level of significance of all relationships. This relationship, after taking control of demographic and clinical variables was observed in the proceeding. Conclusion: It is observed that the alexithymia has effects on the frontal functions of patients with schizophrenia. This mediated effect is related with the clinic of schizophrenia.
