Det er dyrket korn i Nord-Norge siden sein steinalder og kornet var en viktig del av kostholdet. Etter andre verdenskrig ble kornarealet i nord kraftig redusert. Med klimaendringer og med en økt markedsinteresse, er korndyrking igjen blitt aktuelt i nord. En av de største utfordringene er finne egnede sorter for nordlige strøk, og i dette prosjektet har vi testet de sju gjenværende nordnorske sortene for å teste hvor tilpasset de er dagens klima. Selv om resultatene er usikre, mener vi at Dønnes bygg samt at Nordlys og Bode kan være aktuelle byggsorter i Nordland. I Troms og Finnmark kan dyrking av Nordlys bygg være interessant, samt at Bode og Dønnes kan være aktuelle byggsorter. Pol havre og Vågønes vårrug er de eneste sortene av havre og rug fra Nord-Norge. Disse kan være aktuelle for dyrking i nord. Pol havre kan spesielt være interessant for dyrking til fôr i Troms og Finnmark. Videre utprøving kan gi sikrere resultat.

Denne rapporten er en sammenstilling av prosjektet ‘Grøntproduksjon i nord: mot en bærekraftig fremtid’, som ble gjennomført vinteren 2020/2021. Formålet med prosjektet var å undersøke hva en bærekraftig gård i Nord-Norge er, og hvordan vi kan sikre en mer bærekraftig produksjon av bær, grønnsaker og potet i fremtiden. Vi analyserer status for bærekraft på gårdsnivå med SmartFarm og gjennom workshoper undersøker vi hva som kjennetegner læringsprosesser for mer bærekraft.

Aiming for sustainable development of food value chains several assessment methods are developed, however it seems challenging to go from assessment to actual change. A solution proposed is increased stakeholder involvement also in the assessment phase. The perspective on sustainability varies depending on several variables, among which the geographical context where the producers are located. The perspective of the latter is of paramount importance as these are the actors on who, ultimately, possible changes towards sustainability depend. In this article, we applied a qualitative approach to investigate the farmers’ perspective on sustainability, in the horticultural production in Arctic Norway. We found that many of the premises for sustainable food production are present. The main challenges are lack of long-term planning, dependency of rented land as well as fluctuating yield and income. Producer’s network is essential for development as well as introduction of technical improvements. The study shows the importance of contextualisation of sustainability, as well as pointing at concerns about trade-offs between sustainability dimensions and themes in the proposed model. The research contributes to method development by demonstrating how a qualitative approach is a fruitful method to unravel the complexities of sustainability in food production.

Målet med prosjektet er å vurdere potensialet for økt produksjon og verdiskaping av mat produsert i de arktiske delene av Norge. Funnene viser at endringene i klimaet potensielt kan øke både landbruks- og sjømatproduksjonen i Arktis. For å øke total produksjonen spiller imidlertid offentlige støtteordninger som Innovasjon Norge og Skattefunnordningen en viktig rolle. Disse har vært avgjørende for mange småbedrifter i oppstartsfasen. Samtidig ser man forbedringspotensial i forhold til brukervennlighet og langsiktig tenkning. For å øke produksjonen må man parallelt utvikle lønnsomme markedskanaler og gode markedsføringsstrategier for arktisk mat. Funnene viser muligheter for å oppnå økt verdi basert på arktisk opprinnelsen. Undersøkelser blant norske, svenske og britiske forbrukere viser at arktisk mat assosieres med positive egenskaper som ferskt og godt, og at mange av karakteristikaene assosiert med arktisk mat er faktorer man kjenner igjen i moderne internasjonale mattrender, som helse, naturlighet, autentisitet og tradisjon. Arktisk matproduksjon er langt fremme på bærekraft, særlig områder som arbeidsvilkår, HMS, biodiversitet og arealbruk, men noe gjenstår i forhold til økonomisk sårbarhet og fremtidsrettede mål. Internasjonalt viser funnene at bærekraft er egenskapen som er viktigst i markedsføringen av arktisk mat. Bærekraft er derfor svært viktig å ivareta, både i produksjon og kommunikasjon av arktisk mat. Background: Fitness may influence cardiovascular (CV) health in obesity. We explored the impact of fitness on CV risk factors and prevalent subclinical CV disease in overweight and obese women and men without known CV disease. Materials and methods: Clinical and echocardiographic data from the FAT associated CardiOvasculaR dysfunction (FATCOR) study was used for analyses of CV risk factors and subclinical CV disease in relation to fitness. Fitness was determined by sex- and age-adjusted peak oxygen uptake on a maximal treadmill test. Results: Hypertension, metabolic syndrome and diabetes were highly and equally prevalent in fit and unfit groups (all p>0.05) (Study 1). In >40% of cases, prevalent hypertension and diabetes were diagnosed in-study. Being fit was characterized by lower waist circumference, non-obesity, non-smoking and higher muscle mass (all p0.05). Mean global longitudinal strain (GLS) was similar between fit and unfit groups within overweight and obese groups (both p>0.05), while low GLS was more prevalent in the unfit vs. the fit obese group (30% vs. 10%, p

The aim of the "Arctic as a food producing region" - project is to assess the potential for increased production and added value of food from the Arctic region, with the overarching aim of improving economic and social conditions of Arctic communities. This report is the output from the first phase of the project, providing a description of the main food production and examples of conditions for food production in the Arctic areas of the countries involved. This will form the basis for further analysis of opportunities, driving forces and barriers for further development of arctic food production, in the next phase of the project. The project has participation from Canada, Denmark, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Russia, and is endorsed by the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG). Denne rapporten har fokus på dyrking og bruk av bygg i Nord-Norge. Innholdet er basert på kunnskapen som er generert gjennom det Nord-Atlantiske samarabeidsprosjektet Northern Cereals 2015-2018. I tillegg til kunnskap om hvordan man dyrker bygg i nord og bruker bygg til mat og malt omhandler rapporten dyrking og bruk av bygg i Nord-Norge i historisk sammenheng, samt et avsluttende kapittel om nye muligheter for denne næringen.

The status of cereal cultivation in Iceland, northern Norway, Faroe Islands, Orkney and Newfoundland has been studied in a project supported by the Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme (NPA). In Orkney, Iceland and northern Norway cereal cultivation is well established while the Faroe Islands are re-establishing, and Newfoundland is starting, cultivation. The project transfers knowledge between the regions and aims to increase the value of cereal products, indicate new innovative products and increase cultivation of cereals. In this report, the cereal value chain is described to inspire companies and initiators to identify new opportunities and create new jobs. Total cereal grain production in the five regions was about 38,000 tons in 2014 while imports were about 146,000 tons, just for Iceland, Orkney and Newfoundland. The population of the region is about 1.4 million and the annual number of visitors is above 2 million. Considerable amounts of cereal-based products are consumed in the regions. These include many different foods (bakery products, breakfast cereals, snacks, flour, porridges etc.) and beverages (e.g. beer and whisky) and offer many opportunities for using local cereals. Recent trends in the cereal food market are very conducive to the development of new products and greater local production within the project regions. Interest in local food and drinks is increasing and food producers need to respond to increasing demand from visitors. In all of the regions, barley is the most important cereal grown. Barley contains several health-enhancing nutritional components including β-glucan and antioxidants and, with growing awareness of the need for healthy eating, there is increased interest in it as a raw material for the food industry. Barley is also used for the production of malt which is a key ingredient for the production of beer and whisky. The number of microbreweries has grown and they are now found in remote regions. For breweries to distinguish themselves from competitors, product differentiation is becoming increasingly important and an attractive way of doing this is to use local ingredients (barley, malt and herbs). However, in order to utilise local barley for beverage production, it will usually be necessary to develop a local capacity for malting.

Denne rapporten er et bidrag til kunnskapsgrunnlaget for å konkretisere hva bærekraftig matproduksjon betyr i norsk ammeku-produksjon. Utgangspunktet for arbeidet er en helhetlig tilnærming, der alle dimensjoner av bærekraft inkluderes ved bruk av SAFA-rammeverket. Gjennom en prosess med bred medvirkning har vi sett på status for norsk ammeku-produksjon i dag. Deretter har vi gjennomført ti SMART bærekraftsanalyser på gårder med ammeku-produksjon, og diskutert resultatene av disse i to workshoper. I andre workshop gikk vi dypere inn i hvert tema i SAFA/SMART og diskuterte beste-praksis for ammeku-produksjon. I rapporten diskuterer vi SMART som mulig verktøy for vurdering og dokumentasjon av alle dimensjoner av bærekraft. Konklusjonene er at alle temaene i SMART/SAFA er relevante for norske forhold, at SMART er godt egnet til å skape bevissthet om bærekraft på egen gård, men at SMART med fordel bedre kan tilpasses norsk begrepsbruk og knyttes til eksisterende verktøy. Selv om resultatene fra SMART-analysene fra de ti gårdene er gode, er det et for lite utvalg til å konkludere på bærekraft i en hel produksjonsform. I tillegg er bærekraft en prosess, og en bør være varsom med å konkludere med et nivå på hvor bærekraftig produksjonen er. Hovedkonklusjonen er at alltid å ha med helheten, er avgjørende for å kunne ta reelt bærekraftige beslutninger

Lower myocardial mechanic-energetic efficiency (MEEi), expressed as stroke volume/heart rate ratio (SV/HR) in mL/s/g of the left ventricular (LV) mass, is associated with the incidence of heart failure in subjects with cardiometabolic disorders. We explored the association of MEEi with LV systolic circumferential and longitudinal myocardial function in 480 subjects with increased body mass index (BMI) without known cardiovascular disease (mean age 47 ± 9 years, 61% women, 63% obese, 74% with hypertension) participating in the fat-associated cardiovascular dysfunction (FATCOR) study. Insulin resistance was assessed by the homeostasis model assessment insulin-resistance index (HOMA-IR). SV was calculated by Doppler echocardiography. The LV systolic circumferential myocardial function was evaluated by midwall fractional shortening (MFS) and longitudinal function by global longitudinal strain (GLS). Patients were grouped into MEEi quartiles. The lowest MEEi quartile (&lt, 0.41 mL/s per g) was considered low MEEi. The association of MEEi with MFS and GLS were tested in multivariable linear regression analyses. Patients with low MEEi were more frequently men, with obesity and hypertension, dyslipidemia and higher HOMA-IR index (all p for trend &lt, 0.05). In multivariable analyses, lower MEEi was associated with lower LV myocardial function by MFS and GLS independent of higher LV mass and clinical variables, including older age, male sex, presence of hypertension and a higher triglycerides level (all p &lt, 0.05). In conclusion, in subjects with increased BMI without known cardiovascular disease participating in the FATCOR study, reduced MEEi was associated with lower LV myocardial function both in the circumferential and longitudinal direction, independent of cardiometabolic factors.
