1. Beneficial effects of ambroxol hydrochloride on pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsion model in rats

Abstract

In present experimental study, we purposed to research if ambroxol would have beneficial acute effects on PTZ-induced convulsions by EEG records. 48 rats were randomly divided into two groups; group A for EEG recordings and B for behavioral evaluations. Groups A and B determined as; Group A1 and B1 control, Group A2 and B2 saline, Group A3 and B3 10 mg / kg ambroxol and Group A4 and B4 20 mg / kg ambroxol group. Drugs were given intraperitoneally 30 minutes before pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) administration. While 35 mg / kg PTZ was used for EEG recordings and 70 mg / kg PTZ was used for behavioral evaluations. Racine Convulsion Scale (RCS) and "first myoclonic jerk" (FMJ) times were used for the seizure evaluations. Racines convulsion scale was significantly lower in control group compared PTZ (70 mg/kg) and saline group (p < 0.001). It was lower in ambroxol hydrochloride group compared with PTZ (70 mg/kg) and saline group (70 mg/kg). FMJ onset time was significantly shorter in ambroxol hydrochloride group compared with PTZ (70 mg/kg) and saline group. Spike percentage EEG recordings were significantly lower in ambroxol hydrochloride group compared with PTZ (70 mg/kg) and saline group (70 mg/kg). The statistical significance increased based on the administration doses of ambroxol hydrochloride. Ambroxol hydrochloride has a positive effect on PTZ-induced convulsions, but by more detailed further experimental and clinical studies, involving advanced biochemical measurements, are needed to understand the exact mechanism of action. Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by pediatric infectious disease specialists from 32 different hospitals from all over Turkey by case record forms. Pediatric cases who were diagnosed as COVID-19 between March 16, 2020, and June 15, 2020 were included. Case characteristics including age, sex, dates of disease onset and diagnosis, family, and contact information were recorded. Clinical data, including the duration and severity of symptoms, were also collected. Laboratory parameters like biochemical tests and complete blood count, chest X-ray, and chest computed tomography (CT) were determined.Results: There were 1,156 confirmed pediatric COVID-19 cases. In total, male cases constituted 50.3% (n = 582) and females constituted 49.7% (n = 574). The median age of the confirmed cases was 10.75 years (4.5–14.6). Of the total cases, 90 were younger than 1 year of age (7.8%), 108 were 1–3 years of age (9.3%), 148 were 3–6 years of age (12.8%), 298 were 6–12 years of age (25.8%), 233 were 12–15 years of age (20.2%), and 268 cases were older than 15 years of age (23.2%). The most common symptom of the patients at the first visit was fever (50.4%) (n = 583) for a median of 2 days (IQR: 1–3 days). Fever was median at 38.4°C (38.0–38.7°C). The second most common symptom was cough (n = 543, 46.9%). The other common symptoms were sore throat (n = 143, 12.4%), myalgia (n = 141, 12.2%), dyspnea (n = 118, 10.2%), diarrhea (n = 112, 9.7%), stomachache (n = 71, 6.1%), and nasal discharge (n = 63, 5.4%). When patients were classified according to disease severity, 263 (22.7%) patients were asymptomatic, 668 (57.7%) patients had mild disease, 209 (18.1%) had moderate disease, and 16 (1.5%) cases had severe disease. One hundred and forty-nine (12.9%) cases had underlying diseases among the total cases; 56% of the patients who had severe disease had an underlying condition (p < 0.01). The need for hospitalization did not differ between patients who had an underlying condition and those who do not have (p = 0.38), but the need for intensive care was higher in patients who had an underlying condition (p < 0.01). Forty-seven (31.5%) of the cases having underlying conditions had asthma or lung disease (38 of them had asthma).Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the largest pediatric data about confirmed COVID-19 cases. Children from all ages appear to be susceptible to COVID-19, and there is a significant difference in symptomatology and laboratory findings by means of age distribution.

Abstract

Beslenme, anne karnindan baslayarak bireyin yasam boyu sagliginin korunmasi, gelistirilmesi ve yasam kalitesinde en onemli faktorlerden biridir. Ozellikle cocukluk caginda kazanilan saglikli, yeterli ve dengeli beslenme aliskanliginin yasamin programlanmasindaki rolu net olarak anlasilmistir. Ayrica, kronik hastaligi olan cocuklarda hastaliga ozgu dogru beslenme morbidite ve mortaliteyi azaltmakta , hatta bazi kronik hastaliklarda beslenme, tedavinin onemli bir parcasini olusturmaktadir.Eriskin sagligi icin anahtar rol oynayan cocukluk donemi beslenmesi ve kronik hastaligi olan cocuklarin beslenmesinin duzenlenmesinde aile hekimleri ve cocuk sagligi hekimleri onemli bir gorev ustlenmektedir. Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate obesogenic lifestyle and nutritional habits in a single study including a large population of children. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with children aged between 6-12 years from 5 primary schools (n = 1002) in Istanbul, Turkey between April–June 2019. A questionnaire was filled which included information about weight, height, sleep duration, daily screen time and eating habits. Results: It was observed that obese children had significantly shorter sleep duration compared to children in other body mass index (BMI) groups (p = 0.001). It was found that median age was higher in children who slept less than 9 hours compared to those who slept 9 hours or more (p = 0.001). We also found that the median daily screen time of children who slept less than 9 hours was higher than the rest (p = 0.024). Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between short sleep duration and overweight / obesity prevalence and increased daily screen time. Sleep duration can be a potentially modifiable risk factor in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome is a clinical condition caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which can be transmitted either vertically or horizontally. More than 90% of children living with HIV in developing countries have been infected through mother to child transmission during pregnancy, around the time of birth, or through breastfeeding. In order to reduce the number of infected children, increasing emphasis should be placed on preventing mother to child transmission programs with the use of antiretroviral medications in the pregnant woman during pregnancy and at delivery and, starting immediately after birth for the exposed infant. Here, we present the case of a 60-day-old infant heavily immunocompromised due to an extremely high viral burden of HIV, which was acquired perinatally from an undiagnosed and untreated mother, leading to severe bronchopneumonia, sepsis, septic shock and death.
