1. Intrinsic mixed-dimensional beam-shell-solid couplings in linear Cosserat continua via tangential differential calculus

Abstract

We present an approach to the coupling of mixed-dimensional continua by employing the mathematically enriched linear Cosserat micropolar model. The kinematical reduction of the model to lower dimensional domains leaves its fundamental degrees of freedom intact. Consequently, the degrees of freedom intrinsically agree even at the interface with a domain of a different dimensionality. Thus, this approach circumvents the need for intermediate finite elements or mortar methods. We introduce the derivations of all models of various dimensions using tangential differential calculus. The coupling itself is then achieved by defining a mixed-dimensional action functional with consistent Sobolev trace operators. Finally, we present numerical examples involving a three-dimensional silicone-rubber block reinforced with a curved graphite shell on its lower surface, a three-dimensional silver block reinforced with a graphite plate and beams, and lastly, intersecting silver shells reinforced with graphite beams.

2. Formulae and transformations for simplicial tensorial finite elements via polytopal templates

Abstract

We introduce a unified method for constructing the basis functions of a wide variety of partially continuous tensor-valued finite elements on simplices using polytopal templates. These finite element spaces are essential for achieving well-posed discretisations of mixed formulations of partial differential equations that involve tensor-valued functions, such as the Hellinger-Reissner formulation of linear elasticity. In our proposed polytopal template method, the basis functions are constructed from template tensors associated with the geometric polytopes (vertices, edges, faces etc.) of the reference simplex and any scalar-valued $H^1$-conforming finite element space. From this starting point we can construct the Regge, Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson, Pechstein-Sch\"oberl, Hu-Zhang, Hu-Ma-Sun and Gopalakrishnan-Lederer-Sch\"oberl elements. Because the Hu-Zhang element and the Hu-Ma-Sun element cannot be mapped from the reference simplex to a physical simplex via standard double Piola mappings, we also demonstrate that the polytopal template tensors can be used to define a consistent mapping from a reference simplex even to a non-affine simplex in the physical mesh. Finally, we discuss the implications of element regularity with two numerical examples for the Reissner-Mindlin plate problem.

Abstract

FEniCSx Preconditioning Tools (FEniCSx-pctools) is a software package for easing the specification of PETSc-based block preconditioning strategies in the DOLFINx finite element solver of the FEniCS Project. It attaches all of the necessary metadata to the block-structured linear systems in order that block-structured preconditioners can be applied straightforwardly via PETSc's options-based configuration system. Fast prototyping is facilitated thanks to the implementation in Python, and all intensive operations are executed in C/C++. 5. A Reissner-Mindlin plate formulation using symmetric Hu-Zhang elements via polytopal transformations

Abstract

In this work we develop new finite element discretisations of the shear-deformable Reissner--Mindlin plate problem based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle of symmetric stresses. Specifically, we use conforming Hu-Zhang elements to discretise the bending moments in the space of symmetric square integrable fields with a square integrable divergence $\boldsymbol{M} \in \mathcal{HZ} \subset H^{\mathrm{sym}}(\mathrm{Div})$. The latter results in highly accurate approximations of the bending moments $\boldsymbol{M}$ and in the rotation field being in the discontinuous Lebesgue space $\boldsymbol{\phi} \in [L]^2$, such that the Kirchhoff-Love constraint can be satisfied for $t \to 0$. In order to preserve optimal convergence rates across all variables for the case $t \to 0$, we present an extension of the formulation using Raviart-Thomas elements for the shear stress $\mathbf{q} \in \mathcal{RT} \subset H(\mathrm{div})$. We prove existence and uniqueness in the continuous setting and rely on exact complexes for inheritance of well-posedness in the discrete setting. This work introduces an efficient construction of the Hu-Zhang base functions on the reference element via the polytopal template methodology and Legendre polynomials, making it applicable to hp-FEM. The base functions on the reference element are then mapped to the physical element using novel polytopal transformations, which are suitable also for curved geometries. The robustness of the formulations and the construction of the Hu-Zhang element are tested for shear-locking, curved geometries and an L-shaped domain with a singularity in the bending moments $\boldsymbol{M}$. Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract

This new approach allows the user to experiment with model choices easily and quickly without requiring in-depth expertise, as constitutive models can be modified by one line of code only. This ease in building new models makes SOniCS ideal to develop surrogate, reduced order models and to train machine learning algorithms for uncertainty quantification or to enable patient-specific simulations. SOniCS is thus not only a tool that facilitates the development of surgical training simulations but also, and perhaps more importantly, paves the way to increase the intuition of users or otherwise non-intuitive behaviors of (bio)mechanical systems. The plugin uses new developments of the FEniCSx project enabling automatic generation with FFCx of finite element tensors such as the local residual vector and Jacobian matrix. We validate our approach with numerical simulations such as manufactured solutions, cantilever beams, and benchmarks provided by FEBio. We reach machine precision accuracy and demonstrate the use of the plugin for a real-time haptic simulation involving a surgical tool controlled by the user in contact with a hyperelastic liver. We include complete examples showing the use of our plugin for simulations involving Saint Venant-Kirchhoff, Neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, and Holzapfel Ogden anisotropic models as supplementary material.

8. An a posteriori error estimator for the spectral fractional power of the Laplacian

Abstract

We develop a novel a posteriori error estimator for the $L^2$ error committed by the finite element discretization of the solution of the fractional Laplacian. Our a posteriori error estimator takes advantage of the semi-discretization scheme using rational approximations which allow to reformulate the fractional problem into a family of non-fractional parametric problems. The estimator involves applying the implicit Bank-Weiser error estimation strategy to each parametric non-fractional problem and reconstructing the fractional error through the same rational approximation used to compute the solution to the original fractional problem. In addition we propose an algorithm to adapt both the finite element mesh and the rational scheme in order to balance the discretization errors. We provide several numerical examples in both two and three-dimensions demonstrating the effectivity of our estimator for varying fractional powers and its ability to drive an adaptive mesh refinement strategy.

Abstract

In this paper, we develop a framework for solving inverse deformation problems using the FEniCS Project finite element software. We validate our approach with experimental imaging data acquired from a soft silicone beam under gravity. In contrast with inverse iterative algorithms that require multiple solutions of a standard elasticity problem, the proposed method can compute the undeformed configuration by solving only one modified elasticity problem. This modified problem has a complexity comparable to the standard one. The framework is implemented within an open-source pipeline enabling the direct and inverse deformation simulation directly from imaging data. We use the high-level Unified Form Language (UFL) of the FEniCS Project to express the finite element model in variational form and to automatically derive the consistent Jacobian. Consequently, the design of the pipeline is flexible: for example, it allows the modification of the constitutive models by changing a single line of code. Abstract

In the seminal paper of Bank and Weiser [Math. Comp., 44 (1985), pp.283-301] a new a posteriori estimator was introduced. This estimator requires the solution of a local Neumann problem on every cell of the finite element mesh. Despite the promise of Bank-Weiser type estimators, namely locality, computational efficiency, and asymptotic sharpness, they have seen little use in practical computational problems. The focus of this contribution is to describe a novel implementation of hierarchical estimators of the Bank-Weiser type in a modern high-level finite element software with automatic code generation capabilities. We show how to use the estimator to drive (goal-oriented) adaptive mesh refinement and to mixed approximations of the nearly-incompressible elasticity problems. We provide comparisons with various other used estimators. An open-source implementation based on the FEniCS Project finite element software is provided as supplementary material.

Abstract

We introduce a novel meshfree Galerkin method for the solution of Reissner-Mindlin plate problems that is written in terms of the primitive variables only (i.e., rotations and transverse displacement) and is devoid of shear-locking. The proposed approach uses linear maximum-entropy approximations and is built variationally on a two-field potential energy functional wherein the shear strain, written in terms of the primitive variables, is computed via a volume-averaged nodal projection operator that is constructed from the Kirchhoff constraint of the three-field mixed weak form. The stability of the method is rendered by adding bubble-like enrichment to the rotation degrees of freedom. Some benchmark problems are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the proposed method for a wide range of plate thicknesses.

Abstract

Containers are an emerging technology that hold promise for improving productivity and code portability in scientific computing. We examine Linux container technology for the distribution of a non-trivial scientific computing software stack and its execution on a spectrum of platforms from laptop computers through to high performance computing (HPC) systems. We show on a workstation and a leadership-class HPC system that when deployed appropriately there are no performance penalties running scientific programs inside containers. For Python code run on large parallel computers, the run time is reduced inside a container due to faster library imports. The software distribution approach and data that we present will help developers and users decide on whether container technology is appropriate for them. We also provide guidance for the vendors of HPC systems that rely on proprietary libraries for performance on what they can do to make containers work seamlessly and without performance penalty.

Abstract

We discuss Bayesian inference (BI) for the probabilistic identification of material parameters. This contribution aims to shed light on the use of BI for the identification of elastoplastic material parameters. For this purpose a single spring is considered, for which the stress-strain curves are artificially created. Besides offering a didactic introduction to BI, this paper proposes an approach to incorporate statistical errors both in the measured stresses, and in the measured strains. It is assumed that the uncertainty is only due to measurement errors and the material is homogeneous. Furthermore, a number of possible misconceptions on BI are highlighted based on the purely elastic case.

28. Meshless methods for shear-deformable beams and plates based on mixed weak forms

Abstract

Thin structural theories such as the shear-deformable Timoshenko beam and Reissner-Mindlin plate theories have seen wide use throughout engineering practice to simulate the response of structures with planar dimensions far larger than their thickness dimension. Meshless methods have been applied to construct numerical methods to solve the shear deformable theories. Similarly to the finite element method, meshless methods must be carefully designed to overcome the well-known shear-locking problem. Many successful treatments of shear-locking in the finite element literature are constructed through the application of a mixed weak form. In the mixed weak form the shear stresses are treated as an independent variational quantity in addition to the usual displacement variables. We introduce a novel hybrid meshless-finite element formulation for the Timoshenko beam problem that converges to the stable first-order/zero-order finite element method in the local limit when using maximum entropy meshless basis functions. The resulting formulation is free from the effects shear-locking. We then consider the Reissner-Mindlin plate problem. The shear stresses can be identified as a vector field belonging to the Sobelov space with square integrable rotation, suggesting the use of rotated Raviart-Thomas-Nedelec elements of lowest-order for discretising the shear stress field. This novel formulation is again free from the effects of shear-locking. Finally we consider the construction of a generalised displacement method where the shear stresses are eliminated prior to the solution of the final linear system of equations. We implement an existing technique in the literature for the Stokes problem called the nodal volume averaging technique. To ensure stability we split the shear energy between a part calculated using the displacement variables and the mixed variables resulting in a stabilised weak form. The method then satisfies the stability conditions resulting in a formulation that is free from the effects of shear-locking.

Abstract

We develop a method for computing Bayes' factors of conceptual rainfall-runoff models based on thermodynamic integration, gradient-based replica-exchange Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms and modern differentiable programming languages. We apply our approach to the problem of choosing from a set of conceptual bucket-type models with increasing dynamical complexity calibrated against both synthetically generated and real runoff data from Magela Creek, Australia. We show that using the proposed methodology the Bayes factor can be used to select a parsimonious model and can be computed robustly in a few hours on modern computing hardware. We introduce formal posterior predictive checks for the selected model. The prior calibrated posterior predictive p-value, which also tests for prior data conflict, is used for the posterior predictive checks. 40. Optimisation of active SHM system based on optimal number and placement of piezoelectric transducers

Abstract

This paper concerns optimal placement and number of discrete piezoelectric macro fibre composite (MFC) sensors to optimise SHM systems. Its novelty lies in a two-stage placement methodology for discrete piezoelectric transducers, with fitness and objective functions to optimise the location and number of discrete piezoelectric sensors in order to reduce the cost and complexity of data processing and increase the effectiveness in damage detection. The maximisation of sensor voltage amplitude at multiple modes of vibration and the average of sensor normal damage index [Formula: see text] measured for several plates artificially cracked at different positions and orientations are proposed as objective functions to optimise the locations and the number of efficient piezoelectric sensors. A non-normalised root-mean-square deviation [Formula: see text] is introduced in this study in place of the conventional normalised [Formula: see text] to assess the degree of damage and sensor effectiveness. Furthermore, normal damage indices [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] normalised to 100% are proposed as the fitness functions. The placement methodology is utilised and verified for stiffened and unstiffened plates; stiffeners are used to break the dynamic symmetry and increase plate complexity. The performance of the placement methodology is tested for a healthy and 12 damaged plates to optimise SHM system based on the maximisation of sensor voltage and average normal damage index [Formula: see text] as objective functions. The results show that the placement methodology is efficient in determining the optimum number and placement of piezoelectric sensors at a low computational effort. The optimum placement of two piezoelectric sensors can efficiently monitor the crack’s initiation at different positions and multiple modes of vibration. The optimal placement and number of sensors have a positive impact on the cost, data acquisition and processing of the active SHM system

Abstract

We develop a novel a posteriori error estimator for the L2 error committed by the finite ele- ment discretization of the solution of the fractional Laplacian. Our a posteriori error estimator takes advantage of the semi–discretization scheme using a rational approximation which allows to reformulate the fractional problem into a family of non–fractional parametric problems. The estimator involves applying the implicit Bank–Weiser error estimation strategy to each parametric non–fractional problem and reconstructing the fractional error through the same rational approximation used to compute the solution to the original fractional problem. We provide several numerical examples in both two and three-dimensions demonstrating the effectivity of our estimator for varying fractional powers and its ability to drive an adaptive mesh refinement strategy.

Abstract

In industrial extrusion processes, increasing shear rates can lead to higher production rates. However, at high shear rates, extruded polymers and polymer compounds often exhibit melt instabilities ranging from stick-slip to sharkskin to gross melt fracture. These instabilities result in challenges to meet the specifications on the extrudate shape. Starting with an existing published data set on melt instabilities in polymer extrusion, we assess the suitability of clustering, unsupervised machine learning algorithms combined with feature selection, to extract and identify hidden and important features from this data set, and their possible relationship with melt instabilities. The data set consists of both intrinsic features of the polymer as well as extrinsic features controlled and measured during an extrusion experiment. Using a range of commonly available clustering algorithms, it is demonstrated that the features related to only the intrinsic properties of the data set can be reliably divided into two clusters, and that in turn, these two clusters may be associated with either the stick-slip or sharkskin instability. Furthermore, using a feature ranking on both the intrinsic and extrinsic features of the data set, it is shown that the intrinsic properties of molecular weight and polydispersity are the strongest indicators of clustering.

Abstract

In the seminal paper of Bank and Weiser [Math. Comp., 44 (1985), pp.283-301] a new a posteriori estimator was introduced. This estimator requires the solution of a local Neumann problem on every cell of the finite element mesh. Despite the promise of Bank-Weiser type estimators, namely locality, computational efficiency, and asymptotic sharpness, they have seen little use in practical computational problems. The focus of this contribution is to describe a novel implementation of hierarchical estimators of the Bank-Weiser type in a modern high-level finite element software with automatic code generation capabilities. We show how to use the estimator to drive (goal-oriented) adaptive mesh refinement and to mixed approximations of the nearly-incompressible elasticity problems. We provide comparisons with various other used estimators. An open-source implementation based on the FEniCS Project finite element software is provided as supplementary material.

46. Towards assimilating SAR data into an anisotropic model of an underground aquifer

Abstract

In this study, we aim to shed light on the feasibility of assimilating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data into a partial differential equation-based model of a poroelastic homogeneous aquifer with anisotropic hydraulic conductivity (AHC). Although other authors [1] have considered the problem of assimilating SAR data into a poroelastic model that uses an inhomogeneous isotropic random field model for hydraulic conductivity, to the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to consider assimilating SAR data into a poroelastic model with AHC. Our study is inspired by the work of [2] where an aquifer test is performed on the Anderson Junction aquifer in southwestern Utah. Due to the inherent preferential direction of the fractured sandstone at the Anderson Junction site, the ratio of hydraulic conductivity along the principal axes can be on the order of 24 to 1. We build an anisotropically conductive poroelastic finite element model of the Anderson Junction site that can predict the coupled fluid flow and mechanical displacements. Our results show that the effective elastic response of the aquifer on the Earth’s surface has an anisotropic nature driven by the underlying anisotropy in the fluid problem, even when the elasticity problem is assumed to be isotropic. We interpret these results in the context of using SAR data to improve the characterization of aquifer systems, like the Anderson Junction site, with strongly anisotropic behavior. With this in mind, the Modernist Society has decided to produce a guide to 21st-century architecture in Manchester and Salford titled GMC21. This is not necessarily a ‘Best of’ but is more of a subjective list, selected by the Modernist team, with the aim to show a wide variety of Manchester and Salford’s architecture from the last 23 years. ‘GMC21: Twenty-first Century Architecture in Manchester and Salford’ is now available for pre-order with publication and shipping due in August 2023. The book features over 100 examples of new architecture covering all types of buildings - from skyscrapers to substations, apartment blocks to tram stops, bridges to the B of The Bang and from AHMM to Zaha Hadid. This book is for all who have an interest in modern architecture and the shape and look of our modern cities. It is hoped that the collection will encapsulate the seemingly relentless building boom that has been ongoing in the city since 2000. The information for each building has been collected with the help of the architectural firms involved, with a huge amount of support and goodwill from all of them and from the architectural photographers that have worked with them. Each entry includes factual information, a short contextual description and high-quality photographs.
