We describe a birefringent thin film as a waveplate for polarization conversion, a system of birefringent thin films for photonics bandgaps and achromatization of functionality, birefringent thin film with a twist and multilayer CDW coatings. A theory of a broadband thin-film polarizing beam splitter based on an anisotropic cycloidal diffraction grating is proposed. The achromatization of the grating is provided by creating two-layer chiral structures with an opposite twist sense. Such a system has almost 100% efficiency. The calculations were carried out by the Jones matrix method. The resulting efficiency and bandwidth are higher than the previously known results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

THERMOMECHANICS of magnetic fluids ,LIQUID crystals ,GAUSSIAN beams ,LASER beams ,NONLINEAR theories - Abstract
In a nonuniform nematic liquid crystal director reorientation may take place as a result of a temperature gradient. We formulated a two-dimensional model of the temperature gradient caused by the light absorption of a Gaussian laser beam impinging normally on the liquid crystal cell. Within this model, we calculated the director reorientation and the subsequent optical nonlinearity of the liquid crystal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIGHT ,CHOLESTERIC liquid crystals ,LIGHT transmission ,LIGHT propagation ,OPTICAL reflection ,DENSITY of states - Abstract
Oblique propagation of light through a planar layer of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) is solved by Ambartsumian's modified layer addition method. Two cases are considered, namely, the case when dielectric boundaries have a minimum influence on light transmission and the case when the CLC layer is in a vacuum. It is shown that in the first case a total internal reflection can happen for the fast eigen-mode at large incidence angles. New important features of light reflection (transmission) spectra, photonic density of states and accumulated energy density in the CLC layer are studied. The light localisation peculiarities in the CLC layer at oblique incidence is investigated too. It is shown that the light localisation for both the long-wavelength edge mode and the short-wavelength edge mode changes differently when the incidence angle changes. The obtained results can be used in the design of low-threshold lasers, in solar cell systems, in chiral photonics, in systems strongly absorbing light at certain wavelengths and when designing systems with absorption suppression created on the base of absorbing media, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FEMTOSECOND pulses ,SPATIAL light modulators ,LIQUID crystals - Abstract
The possibility of femtosecond optical pulses shaping using a spatial--light modulator (SLM) based on the twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal with homeotropic boundary conditions is theoretically considered. Phase sensitive pulse shaping using a TNSLM and the shaped waveforms are calculated. Using this kind of LC structure allows to control shaping process by electrical fields with voltages much less than 1V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-quality cross sections for the reaction gamma+d->pi^0+d have been measured using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab over a wide energy range near and above the eta-meson photoproduction threshold. At backward c.m. angles for the outgoing pions, we observe a resonance-like structure near E_gamma=700 MeV. Our model analysis shows that it can be explained by eta excitation in the intermediate state. The effect is the result of the contribution of the N(1535)S_11 resonance to the amplitudes of the subprocesses occurring between the two nucleons and of a two-step process in which the excitation of an intermediate eta meson dominates., Comment: slightly modified title, additional paragraph and a table (Table 2) added on p. 5; to be submitted to EPJA, 6 pages, 3 figures

Physics and Astronomy(all) - Abstract
We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive f_{0}(980) meson photoproduction on protons for E_{gamma}=3.0-3.8 GeV and -t=0.4-1.0 GeV2. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the pi;{+}pi;{-} channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction gammap--ppi;{+}pi;{-}. Clear evidence of the f_{0}(980) meson was found in the interference between P and S waves at M_{pi;{+}pi;{-}} approximately 1 GeV. The S-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the f_{0}(980) was found to be a factor of about 50 smaller than the cross section for the rho meson. This is the first time the f_{0}(980) meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment.

Nuclear and High Energy Physics - Abstract
The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q(2)< 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for pi(+) electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent Q(2) behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 transition. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude A(1/2), which is large and negative at Q(2)=0, becomes large and positive at Q(2)similar or equal to 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q(2). The longitudinal helicity amplitude S-1/2, which was previously found from CLAS ep -> ep pi(0),en pi(+) data to be large and positive at Q(2)=0.4,0.65 GeV2, drops with Q(2). Available model predictions for gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P-11 as a first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for Q(2)< 1 GeV2 that the presentation of N(1440)P-11 as a q(3)G hybrid state is ruled out.

The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e(+)e(-) --> W+W- --> lvqq' at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies roots = 183-209 GeV are used to measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured to be 0.218 +/- 0.027 +/- 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. A search for the lightest neutral CP-even and neutral CP-odd Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is performed using 216.6 pb-1 of data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 203 and 209 GeV. No indication of a signal is found. Including our results from lower centre-of-mass energies, lower limits on the Higgs boson masses are set as a function of tan(beta) for several scenarios. For tan(beta) greater than 0.7 they are mh 84.5 GeV and mA 86.3 GeV at 95% confidence level.

Inclusive D^{*+-} production in two-photon collisions is studied with the L3 detector at LEP, using 683 pb^{-1} of data collected at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 208 GeV. Differential cross sections are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the D^{*+-} mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV P_T 12 GeV and |eta| 1.4. The cross sections sigma(e^+e^- ---> e^+e^-D^{*+-}X)$ in this kinematical region is measured and the sigma(e^+e^- ---> e^+e^- cc{bar}X) cross section is derived. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

We present cross-sections for J/$\psi$, $\psi^{\prime}$ and Drell-Yan production in lead-lead interactions at 158 GeV/nucleon. The Pb-Pb data, when compared with previous results obtained with lighter target or projectiles, show a similar behaviour for Drell-Yan, but exhibit an anomalous J/$\psi$ suppression, which increases with centrality.
