Abstract Seismic waves can shake mountainous landscapes, triggering thousands of landslides. Regional-scale landslide models primarily rely on shaking intensity parameters obtained by simplifying ground motion time-series into peak scalar values. Such an approach neglects the contribution of ground motion phase and amplitude and their variations over space and time. Here, we address this problem by developing an explainable deep-learning model able to treat the entire wavefield and benchmark it against a model equipped with scalar intensity parameters. The experiments run on the area affected by the 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake reveal a 16% improvement in predictive capacity when incorporating full waveforms. This improvement is achieved mainly on gentle (~25°) hillslopes exposed to low ground shaking (~0.2 m/s). Moreover, we can largely attribute this improvement to the ground motion before and much after the peak velocity arrival. This underscores the limits of single-intensity measures and the untapped potential of full waveform information.

Abstract Mapping of landslides over space has seen an increasing attention and good results in the last decade. While current methods are chiefly applied to generate event-inventories, whereas multi-temporal (MT) inventories are rare, even using manual landslide mapping. Here, we present an innovative deep learning strategy which employs transfer learning that allows for the Attention Deep Supervision Multi-Scale U-Net model to be adapted for landslide detection tasks in new areas. The method also provides the flexibility of re-training a pretrained model to detect both rainfall- and earthquake-triggered landslides on new target areas. For the mapping, we used archived Planet Lab remote sensing images spanning a period between 2009 till 2021 with spatial resolution of 3–5 m to systematically generate MT landslide inventories. When we examined all cases, our approach provided an average F1 score of 0.8 indicating that we successfully identified the spatiotemporal occurrences of landslides. To examine the size distribution of mapped landslides we compared the frequency-area distributions of predicted co-seismic landslides with manually mapped products from the literature. Results showed a good match between calculated power-law exponents where the difference ranges between 0.04 and 0.21. Overall, this study showed that the proposed algorithm could be applied to large areas to generate polygon-based MT landslide inventories.

Post-wildfire management actions mainly targeting the removal of salvage logs and burned trees is a common but controversial practice. Although it aims to regain some of the natural and economic value of a forest, it also requires disturbing burned areas, which may have some negative consequences affecting, for instance, the carbon cycle, soil erosion, and vegetation cover. Observations from different geographic settings contribute to this scientific debate, and yet, the spatiotemporal evolution of the post-fire road network developed as part of fire management practices and its influence on vegetation recovery has been rarely examined. Specifically, we still lack observations from Türkiye, though wildfires are a common event. This research examined the evolution of the vegetation cover in relation to post-fire road constructions and the resultant debris materials in areas affected by the 2017 Sapadere fire in Antalya, Türkiye. We used multi-sensor, multi-temporal optical satellite data and monitored the variation in both vegetation cover and road network from the pre-to post-fire periods between 2014 and 2021. Our results showed that fire management practices almost doubled the road network in the post-fire period, from 487 km to 900 km. Overall, 7% of the burned area was affected by these practices. As a result, vegetation cover in those areas shows only ∼50% recovery, whereas undisturbed areas exhibit ∼100% recovery 5 years after the event. Notably, such spatiotemporal analysis carried out for different burned areas would provide a better insight into the most suitable post-fire management practices. Our findings, in particular, show that the current practices need to be revisited as they cause a delay in vegetation recovery.

Abstract The patterns and controls of the transient enhanced landsliding that follows strong earthquakes remain elusive. Geostatistical models can provide clues on the underlying processes by identifying relationships with a number of physical variables. These models do not typically consider thermal information, even though temperature is known to affect the hydro-mechanical behavior of geomaterials, which, in turn, controls slope stability. Here, we develop a slope unit-based multitemporal susceptibility model for the epicentral region of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake to explore how land surface temperature (LST) relates to landslide patterns over time. We find that LST can explain post-earthquake landsliding while it has no visible effect on the coseismic scene, which is dominated by the strong shaking. Specifically, as the landscape progressively recovers and landslide rates decay to pre-earthquake levels, a positive relationship between LST and landslide persistence emerges. This seems consistent with the action of healing processes, capable of restoring the thermal sensitivity of the slope material after the seismic disturbance. Although analyses in other contexts (not necessarily seismic) are warranted, we advocate for the inclusion of thermal information in geostatistical modeling as it can help form a more physically consistent picture of slope stability controls.

Earthquakes do not only trigger landslides in co-seismic phases but also elevate post-seismic landslide susceptibility either by causing a strength reduction in hillslope materials or by producing co-seismic landslide deposits, which are prone to further remobilization under the external forces generated by subsequent rainfall events. However, we still have limited observations regarding the post-seismic landslide processes. And, the examined cases are rarely representative of tropical conditions where the precipitation regime is strong and persistent. Therefore, in this study, we introduce three new sets of multi-temporal landslide inventories associated with subsets of the areas affected by 1) 2016 Reuleuet (Indonesia, Mw = 6.5), 2) 2018 Porgera (Papua New Guinea, Mw = 7.5) and 3) 2012 Sulawesi (Indonesia, Mw = 6.3), 2017 Kasiguncu (Indonesia, Mw = 6.6) and 2018 Palu (Indonesia, Mw = 7.5) earthquakes. Overall, our findings show that the landslide susceptibility level associated with the occurrences of new landslides return to pre-seismic conditions in less than a year in the study areas under consideration. We stress that these observations might not be representative of the entire area affected by these earthquakes but the areal boundaries of our study areas.

Abstract Cryospheric hazards - in this case, thaw slumps (TS) and thermo-erosion gullies (TEG) - are phenomena typical of permafrost-dominated landscapes. Open datasets informing about their spatial, temporal and size distributions in the Arctic are still uncommon, as opposed to the systematic availability of this information for geomorphic processes in mid- to low- latitudes. To date, only the most populated region of Svalbard was covered with TS and TEG inventories. Here, we extend the respective information to most of the Archipelago, totalling 8491 polygons, out of which 3679 are TSs and 4812 are TEGs. These have been manually mapped from aerial photographs throughout Svalbard across the 14 largest ice-free regions. The SvalCryo inventory is highly relevant as the Arctic environment undergoes alarming changes in response to global warming. The idea behind the two inventories is to support the geoscientific community in the quest to evaluate the environmental response to climate change, by creating a baseline for change monitoring, and ultimately to serve as basis for susceptibility, hazard and risk assessment models.

Abstract The weakening of hillslopes during strong earthquakes increases landsliding rates in post-seismic periods. However, very few studies have addressed the amount of coseismic reduction in shear strength of hillslope materials. This makes estimation of post-seismic landslide susceptibility challenging. Here we propose a method to quantify the maximum shear-strength reduction expected on seismically disturbed hillslopes. We focus on a subset of the area affected by the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan, China earthquake. We combine physical and data-driven modeling approaches. First, we back-analyze shear-strength reduction at locations where post-seismic landslides occurred. Second, we regress the estimated shear-strength reduction against peak ground acceleration, local relief, and topographic position index to extrapolate the shear-strength reduction over the entire study area. Our results show a maximum of 60%–75% reduction in near-surface shear strength over a peak ground acceleration range of 0.5–0.9 g. Reduction percentages can be generalized using a data-driven model.

The initial inception of the landslide susceptibility concept defined it as a static property of the landscape, explaining the proneness of certain locations to generate slope failures. Since the spread of data-driven probabilistic solutions though, the original susceptibility definition has been challenged to incorporate dynamic elements that would lead the occurrence probability to change both in space and in time. This is the starting point of this work, which combines the traditional strengths of the susceptibility framework together with the strengths typical of landslide early warning systems. Specifically, we model landslide occurrences in the norther sector of Vietnam, using a multi-temporal landslide inventory recently released by NASA. A set of static (terrain) and dynamic (cumulated rainfall) covariates are selected to explain the landslide presence/absence distribution via a Bayesian version of a binomial Generalized Additive Models (GAM). Thanks to the large spatiotemporal domain under consideration, we include a large suite of cross-validation routines, testing the landslide prediction through random sampling, as well as through stratified spatial and temporal sampling. We even extend the model test towards regions far away from the study site, to be used as external validation datasets. The overall performance appears to be quite high, with Area Under the Curve (AUC) values in the range of excellent model results, and very few localized exceptions.This model structure may serve as the basis for a new generation of early warning systems. However, the use of The Climate Hazards group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) for the rainfall component limits the model ability in terms of future prediction. Therefore, we envision subsequent development to take this direction and move towards a unified dynamic landslide forecast. Ultimately, as a proof-of-concept, we have also implemented a potential early warning system in Google Earth Engine.

Rapid and accurate identification of landslides is an essential part of landslide hazard assessment, and in particular it is useful for land use planning, disaster prevention, and risk control. Recent alternatives to manual landslide mapping are moving in the direction of artificial intelligence—aided recognition of these surface processes. However, so far, the technological advancements have not produced robust automated mapping tools whose domain of validity holds in any area across the globe. For instance, capturing historical landslides in densely vegetated areas is still a challenge. This study proposed a deep learning method based on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data for automatic identification of historical landslides. Additionally, it tested this method in the Jiuzhaigou earthquake-hit region of Sichuan Province (China). Specifically, we generated a Red Relief Image Map (RRIM), which was obtained via high-precision airborne LiDAR data, and on the basis of this information we trained a Lightweight Attention U-Net (LAU-Net) to map a total of 1949 historical landslides. Overall, our model recognized the aforementioned landslides with high accuracy and relatively low computational costs. We compared multiple performance indexes across several deep learning routines and different data types. The results showed that the Multiple-Class based Semantic Image Segmentation (MIOU) and the F1_score of the LAU-Net and RRIM reached 82.29% and 87.45%, which represented the best performance among the methods we tested.

To understand the factors that make certain areas especially prone to landslides, statistical approaches are typically used. The interpretation of statistical results in areas characterised by complex geological and geomorphological patterns can be challenging, and this makes the understanding of the causes of landslides more difficult. In some cases, landslide inventories report information on the state of activity of landslides, adding a temporal dimension that can be beneficial in the analysis. Here, we used an inventory covering a portion of Northwestern Turkey to demonstrate that active and relict landslides (that is, landslides that occurred in the past and are now stabilised) could be related to different triggers. To do so, we built two landslide susceptibility models and observed that the spatial patterns of susceptibility were completely distinct. We found that these patterns were correlated with specific controlling factors, suggesting that active landslides are regulated by current rainfalls while relict landslides may represent a signature of past earthquakes on the landscape. The importance of this result resides in that we obtained it with a purely data-driven approach, and this was possible because the active/relict landslide classification in the inventory was accurate.
