1. Compatibility Between Physical Stimulus Size – Spatial Position and False Recognitions

Abstract: Magnitude processing is of great interest to researchers because it requires integration of quantity related information in memory regardless of whether the focus is numerical or non-numerical magnitudes. The previous work has suggested an interplay between pre-existing semantic information about number–space relationship in processes of encoding and recall. Investigation of the compatibility between physical stimulus size – spatial position and false recognition may provide valuable information about the cognitive representation of non-numerical magnitudes. Therefore, we applied a false memory procedure to a series of non-numerical stimulus pairs. Three versions of the pairs were used: big-right (a big character on the right/a small character on the left), big-left (a big character on the left/a small character on the right), and equal-sized (an equal sized character on each side). In the first phase, participants (N = 100) received 27 pairs, with nine pairs from each experimental condition. In the second phase, nine pairs from each of three stimulus categories were presented: (1) original pairs that were presented in the first phase, (2) mirrored pairs that were horizontally flipped versions of the pairs presented in the first phase, and (3) novel pairs that had not been presented before. The participants were instructed to press “YES” for the pairs that they remembered seeing before and to press “NO” for the pairs that they did not remember from the first phase. The results indicated that the participants made more false-alarm responses by responding “yes” to the pairs with the bigger one on the right. Moreover, they responded to the previously seen figures with the big one on the right faster compared to their distracting counterparts. The study provided evidence for the relationship between stimulus physical size and how they processed spatially by employing a false memory procedure. We offered a size–space compatibility account based on the congruency between the short- and long-term associations which produce local compatibilities. Accordingly, the compatible stimuli in the learning phase might be responsible for the interference, reflecting a possible short-term interference effect on congruency between the short- and long-term associations. Clearly, future research is required to test this speculative position.

Abstract: Various studies demonstrated that extinction training taking place shortly after the activation of the acquired fear could weaken the conditioned fear. The procedure is called post-retrieval extinction (PRE). However, from the time it emerged, it has suffered from inconsistencies in the ability of researchers to replicate the seemingly established effects. Extant literature implies that conditioned fear might be differentially sensitive to the nature of conditioned stimuli (CS) used. The aim of the present study, therefore, is threefold. First, we aimed to replicate Schiller et al. (Nature, 463, 49-53. 2010) procedure in which the PRE had produced positive results with arbitrary CSs only. Also, we examined the PRE as a function of CS type (ecological-fear-relevant (images of spider and snake) vs. arbitrary (images of yellow and blue circles)). Finally, we aimed to investigate the long-term effects of the PRE (i.e., 24 h, 15 d, and 3 mo). The study consisted of acquisition, re-activation and extinction, and re-extinction phases. Dependent measure was the recovery of fear responses as indexed by the skin conductance responses (SCRs) and arousal ratings of the participants at the last trial of the extinction and the first trial of the re-extinction. All groups showed significant acquisition and extinction patterns, compared to the other two groups (i.e., 6 h after the activating CS and without an activating stimulus) only the group that undertook extinction trials 10 min after the activating CS showed a sustained extinction. Thus, our findings provided further evidence for the robustness of the PRE paradigm in preventing the recovery of extinguished fears behaviorally, both with ecological and arbitrary stimuli.

Abstract: Love is a worldwide known phenomenon that affects many aspects of human life, including considering a romantic partner with whom to bond. Thus, developing a reliable and valid measure of love experiences is crucial. One of the most popular tools to test love levels is Sternberg's 45-item Triangular Love Scale (TLS-45), which measures three love components: Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment. However, our literature review reveals that the majority of studies (64%) use a broad variety of shortened versions of the TLS-45. To achieve scientific consensus and improve the reliability, comparability, and generalizability of results across studies, here, we develop a short version of the scale–the TLS-15–which contains 15 items with a 5-point rather than 9-point response scale. In Study 1 (N = 7,332), we re-analyzed secondary data from a large-scale multinational study that validated the original TLS-45 to establish whether the scale could be truncated. In Study 2 (N = 307), we provided evidence for the three-factor structure of the TLS-15 and its reliability. Study 3 (N = 413) confirmed convergent validity and test-retest stability of the TLS-15. Study 4 (N = 60,311) presented a large-scale validation across 37 linguistic versions of the TLS-15 on a cross-cultural sample spanning every continent of the globe. The overall results provided support for the reliability, validity, and cross-cultural invariance of the TLS-15, which could be used as a measure of love components–separately or jointly as a three-factor measure.

Abstract: People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. Abstract: Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokullarda çalışan öğretmenlerin algılarına göre okul müdürlerinin toksik liderlik davranışları ile öğretmenlerin tükenmişlik düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkileri incelemektir. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ilişkisel tarama deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemi 2015-2016 Eğitim öğretim yılında Denizli ili merkez ilçeleri Pamukkale ve Merkezefendi ilçe milli eğitim müdürlüklerine bağlı kamu ortaokul ve imam hatip ortaokullarında görev yapan 2302 öğretmen arasından oranlı eleman örnekleme yöntemine göre seçilen 352 öğretmenden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri “Maslach Tükenmişlik Ölçeği” ve “Toksik (Zehirli) Liderlik Ölçeği” aracılığı ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde parametrik ve nonparametrik tekniklerden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre öğretmenler okul müdürlerinin toksik liderlik davranışı sergilediklerine katılmamakta, çok nadir de olsa duygusal tükenmişlik ve kişisel başarı hissinde azalma yaşamakta ancak hiçbir zaman duyarsızlaşma yaşamamaktadırlar. Tükenmişliğin bütün alt boyutları ile toksik liderliğin değer bilmezlik alt boyutu ve geneli arasında düşük düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmıştır. Toksik liderliğin tüm boyutları birlikte duygusal tükenmişlik, duyarsızlaşma ve kişisel başarı hissinde azalmayı anlamlı olarak yordamaktadır.

Abstract: Abstract Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

Abstract: Abstract Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries’ modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale. Analyzing data from 9474 individuals from 45 countries, we tested for relationships with country-level predictors, namely, modernization proxies (i.e., Human Development Index, World Modernization Index, Gender Inequality Index), collectivism, and average annual temperatures. We found that mean levels of love (especially intimacy) were higher in countries with higher modernization proxies, collectivism, and average annual temperatures. In conclusion, our results grant some support to the hypothesis that modernization processes might influence love experiences.

Ancak, asimetrinin kaynağının ytizön sahibi mi yoksa, yüzü gözlemleyen kişi mi olduğu henüz açık değildir. Deney I'de mutluluk ifadesinin hangi (sağ/sol) yarı-yüzde daha iyi tanındığı incelenmiştir. Denekler sağ tarafında mutluluk ifadesi bulunan yüzleri daha ifade edici bulmuşlardır. Deney Il'de bu yanlılığın gözlemcideki hemisferik asimetriden mi yoksa poz veren kişinin yüzündeki asimetriden mi kaynaklandığının belirlenmesi hedeflenmiştir. Uyarıcılar çok kısa bir süre ile sol görsel alanda (SOGA) /sağ hemisfere (SAH) veya sağ görsel alanda (SAGA) /sol hemisfere (SOH) sunulmuştur. Yüzler SOGA koşulunda daha htzlı değerlendirilmiş; ancak, SAGA koşulunda daha ifade edici olarak değerlendirlmiştir. Sağ tarafı mutlu olan yüzler SAGA koşulunda daha ifade edici bulunmuştur. Sonuçlar, mutluluk ifadesinin tanınmasında bir sol hemisfer başatlığına ve genel yüz işleme hızında da bir sağ hemisfer başatlığına işaret etmektedir. However, it is not clear whether the source of the asymmetry is the poser or the observer. In Experiment I, we investigated on which hemiface (right/left) the expression of happiness was better identified. Subjects evaluated right-sided happy chimeric faces as more expressive. In Experiment II, we examined whether the source of the bias was the observer's hemispheric asymmetry or the poser's facial asymmetry. Stimuli were briefly presented unilaterally, either in the left visual field(LVF)/right hemisphere(RL) or in the right visual field(RVF)/left hemisphere(LH). Faces were recognized faster in LVF condition, but they were evaluated as more expressive in RVF condition. Right-sided happy faces were found to be more expressive in RVF condition. Results indicated LH superiority in the recognition of happy expression and a RH superiority in the duration of facial processing. Additionally findings pointed out a sex difference in subjects' evaluation time and evaluation scores. Men evaluated the stimuli faster in the RH condition than they did in the LH condition; while women evaluated the faces with higher scores in LH than they did in RH condition.

20. Testing the concealed ovulation hypothesis in the framework of facial symmetry fluctuations moderated by menstrual cycle in women

Abstract: Üç deney ile kadında örtük yumurtlama hipotezi test edilmiştir. İlk deneyde, kadında üreme döngüsünün bir işlevi olarak yüz simetrisindeki değişmeler araştırılmıştır. Bulgular, katılımcıların yüz simetrisinde üreme evreleri boyunca bir değişmenin varlığını ortaya koymuştur. Kadın katılımcılardan elde edilen yüz fotoğraflarının çekicilikleri bakımından değerlendirildiği ikinci deneyde, erkek katılımcılar, yumurtlama evresinde çekilen kadın yüz fotoğraflarını en fazla çekici, adet evresinde çekilen fotoğrafları ise, en az çekici olarak değerlendirmiştir. Dolayısıyla, yüz simetrisindeki değişmelerin erkekler tarafından fotoğrafların çekiciliği temelinde ayırt edilebildiği ortaya konmuştur. Üçüncü deneyde, erkek katılımcıların yarısı (aşina koşulu) aynı kadınların farklı yumurtlama evrelerinde çekilen fotoğraflarını çekicilik açısından değerlendirmiş; diğer yarısı (yabancı koşulu) ise, her bir yumurtlama evresinde farklı bir kadından elde edilen yüz fotoğrafının yer aldığı fotoğraf setlerini çekicilikleri açısından değerlendirmiştir. Yabancı erkek koşulundaki erkekler, aşina erkeklerin tersine, sunulan fotoğrafları çekicilik açısından ayırt etmede başarısız olmuştur. Sonuçlar, kadında örtük yumurtlamanın varlığına işaret ederken, bu örtüklüğün kısmi olduğunu, diğer bir deyişle, yumurtlamanın kadında, özellikle aşina erkekler için, tümüyle örtük olmayabileceğine işaret etmiştir. Çalışma bulguları, kadında yumurtlamanın örtük olmasının erkek için doğurduğu probleme bir çözüm olarak, erkeğin, kadının yakınında kalarak üreme başarısını yükseltme işlevine sahip, bir karşıt psikolojik mekanizma geliştirmiş olabileceği görüşü çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır., With three studies, a long lived position that women have concealed ovulation, and its possible adaptive value were investigated. In the first study, systematic changes in women across the menstural cycle were elaborated and of those, cyclic changes in the facial symmetry in regularly ovulating women were investigated. The findings showed predictable fluctuations on females' facial symmetry throughout their menstural phases. In order to determine whether the differences among the deviation from the symmetry scores of the facial pictures obtained from four menstural phases (namely, menstural, proliferative, ovulatory, and secretory phases) were detectable by males, in the second experiment, males evaluated the facial-menstural pictures for their attractiveness. The male participants rated the pictures obtained from ovulatory phases as the most attractive of all. Also they found the pictures obtained from the menstural phases to be least attractive. In the third study, half of the male participants (familiar males) rated four menstural pictures obtained from the same females, the other half of them (unfamiliar males) rated four menstural pictures, but this time each of which obtained from different females. The males in the latter group were not able to distinguish attractiveness of the facial pictures of different females. The results indicate that although there is some extent of concealment of ovulation in women as an adaptation, it is not completely concealed, especially from the familiar (or pair-bonded) males. Thus, men might have equipped with a counter-adapt, a mental device, through their evolutionary history to cope with the problem of concealment of ovulation in women by staying with her and observing the cyclic changes on her facial attractiveness.

21. The Role of Waist-to-Hip Ratio in Evaluation of Female Physical Attractiveness: Eye-Tracker Data

Abstract: Sunulan çalışma ile vücut ağırlığı ve bel-kalça oranının kadında fiziksel çekiciliğin değerlendirilmesindeki rolünün incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma örneklemi 18-22 yaşlarındaki 50 erkek ve 50 kadın, heteroseksüel katılımcıdan oluşmuştur. Farklı vücut ağırlığı ve bel-kalça oranına sahip toplam 12 kadını temsil edecek biçimde hazırlanmış üç boyutlu figürler erkek ve kadın katılımcılar tarafından çekicilik açısından öz-rapor tekniği ile değerlendirilmiştir. Değerlendirme sürecinde, katılımcıların figürleri inceleme biçimleri göz-izleme sistemi aracılığıyla kaydedilmiş, böylece katılımcıların rapor ettikleri çekicilik değerlendirmeleri görgül olarak test edilmiştir. Katılımcıların çekicilik raporlarına uygulanan Çok Boyutlu Ölçekleme (ÇBÖ) analizi, değerlendirmelerin vücut ağırlığından ziyade, bel-kalça oranı boyutu temelinde yapıldığına işaret etmiştir. ÇBÖ sonuçları, göz-izleme sisteminden elde edilen verilerle de desteklenmiştir. Öte yandan bulgular çekicilik değerlendirmeleri bakımından kadın ve erkek katılımcıların tercihlerinin farklılaştığına işaret etmektedir. Göz-izleme sistemi verileri, çekicilik tercihlerinde gözlenen söz konusu farklılığı açıklamaya yönelik destekleyici bulgular sağlamıştır. Bu farklılık bağlamında, bel-kalça oranının erkek için adaptif önemi evrimsel açıdan tartışılmıştır. Ek olarak, sunulan çalışmanın önemi, literatürde devam eden yöntemsel tartışma ve sorunlara çözümler üretmiş olması bakımından da değerlendirilmiştir., This study attempted to investigate the relative role of body weight and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) on judgements of female physical attractiveness. The sample has consisted of 50 male and 50 female participants who are reportedly heterosexual with an age range of 18-22 years. Using a self-report technique, the participants judged the 12 three-dimensional female figures with different body weight and waist-to-hip ratios for their attractiveness. The participants’ visual responses to the figures were recorded to test their judgements of attractiveness empirically. Overally, the Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis indicated that the participants’ judgements for attractiveness were mainly based on the WHR dimension. MDS data were reinforced by the data obtained from the eye-tracking system. The descriptive data suggested some sex differentiation in attractiveness ratings of the participants. The eye-tracking data provided clarifying information for these sex differences. The findings were discussed under the illumination of evolutionary hypotheses. Some methodological considerations were elaborated, and a set of resolutions were proposed.

Abstract: The COVID-19 restrictions have impacted people’s lifestyles in all spheres (social, psychological, political, economic, and others). This study explored which factors affected the level of anxiety during the time of the first wave of COVID-19 and subsequent quarantine in a substantial proportion of 23 countries, included in this study. The data was collected from May to August 2020 (5 June 2020). The sample included 15,375 participants from 23 countries: (seven from Europe: Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Russia; 11 from West, South and Southeast Asia: Armenia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey; two African: Nigeria and Tanzania; and three from North, South, and Central America: Brazil, Canada, United States). Level of anxiety was measured by means of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the 20-item first part of The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)—State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). Respondents were also asked about their personal experiences with COVID-19, attitudes toward measures introduced by governments, changes in attitudes toward migrants during a pandemic, family income, isolation conditions, etc. The factor analysis revealed that four factors explained 45.08% of variance in increase of anxiety, and these components were interpreted as follows: (1) personal awareness of the threat of COVID-19, (2) personal reaction toward officially undertaken measures and attitudes to foreigners, (3) personal trust in official sources, (4) personal experience with COVID-19. Three out of four factors demonstrated strong associations with both scales of anxiety: high level of anxiety was significantly correlated with high level of personal awareness of the threat of COVID-19, low level of personal reaction toward officially undertaken measures and attitudes to foreigners, and high level of presence of personal experience with COVID-19. Our study revealed significant main effects of sex, country, and all four factors on the level of anxiety. It was demonstrated that countries with higher levels of anxiety assessed the real danger of a pandemic as higher, and had more personal experience with COVID-19. Respondents who trusted the government demonstrated lower levels of anxiety. Finally, foreigners were perceived as the cause of epidemic spread.

Abstract: Objective: Theories about how couples help each other to cope with stress, such as the systemic transactional model of dyadic coping, suggest that the cultural context in which couples live influences how their coping behavior affects their relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the theoretical assumptions, a recent meta-analysis provides evidence that neither culture, nor gender, influences the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction, at least based on their samples of couples living in North America and West Europe. Thus, it is an open questions whether the theoretical assumptions of cultural influences are false or whether cultural influences on couple behavior just occur in cultures outside of the Western world. Method: In order to examine the cultural influence, using a sample of married individuals (N = 7,973) from 35 nations, we used multilevel modeling to test whether the positive association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies across nations and whether gender might moderate the association. Results: Results reveal that the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies between nations. In addition, results show that in some nations the association is higher for men and in other nations it is higher for women. Conclusions: Cultural and gender differences across the globe influence how couples’ coping behavior affects relationship outcomes. This crucial finding indicates that couple relationship education programs and interventions need to be culturally adapted, as skill trainings such as dyadic coping lead to differential effects on relationship satisfaction based on the culture in which couples live.

28. The Effect of Derogation Strategies Used by Females in Intrasexual Competition on Males' Mate Preferences

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of derogation strategies used by females in intrasexual competition on males' mate preferences. For this purpose, a total of four studies, one of them being a preliminary study, were conducted. In the preliminary study, a measurement tool including derogation strategies used by females in intrasexual competition was developed. The first study was conducted to examine which derogation strategies were used more frequently by females in intrasexual competition. Results showed that females used derogation strategies related to promiscuity and infidelity of their rivals more frequently than derogation strategies related to appearance of their rivals. The second study investigated the derogation strategies affecting males' decisions in mate preference. Findings showed that males were affected by derogation strategies including promiscuity and infidelity more than derogation strategies including appearance. The third study examined whether the results of the second study changed according to the relationship type (e.g., long term or short term) planned by males. The results of the multi-sample confirmatory factor analysis with mean structures indicated that there was no significant difference between long term and short term relationship groups for derogation strategies including promiscuity and infidelity. However, findings yielded a significant difference between the two groups in terms of derogation strategies including appearance; males in short term relationship group were affected by derogation strategies including appearance more than the males in long term relationship group.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has spread throughout the world, and concerns about psychological, social, and economic consequences are growing rapidly. Individuals’ empathy-based reactions towards others may be an important resilience factor in the face of COVID-19. Self-report data from 15,375 participants across 23 countries were collected from May to August 2020 during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, this study examined different facets of empathy—Perspective-Taking, Empathic Concern, and Personal Distress, and their association with cross-cultural ratings on Individualism, Power Distance, The Human Development Index, Social Support Ranking, and the Infectious Disease Vulnerability Index, as well as the currently confirmed number of cases of COVID-19 at the time of data collection. The highest ratings on Perspective-Taking were obtained for USA, Brazil, Italy, Croatia, and Armenia (from maximum to minimum), on Empathetic Concern, for the USA, Brazil, Hungary, Italy, and Indonesia, and on Personal Distress, from Brazil, Turkey, Italy, Armenia, Indonesia. Results also present associations between demographic factors and empathy across countries. Limitations and future directions are presented.

However, research examining sex ratio and human mating is limited in scope. Prior work has examined the relationship between sex ratio and desire for short-term, uncommitted mating as well as outcomes such as marriage and divorce rates. Less empirical attention has been directed towards the relationship between sex ratio and mate preferences, despite the importance of mate preferences in the human mating literature. To address this gap, we examined sex ratio’s relationship to the variation in preferences for attractiveness, resources, kindness, intelligence and health in a long-term mate across 45 countries (n = 14 487). We predicted that mate preferences would vary according to relative power of choice on the mating market, with increased power derived from having relatively few competitors and numerous potential mates. We found that each sex tended to report more demanding preferences for attractiveness and resources where the opposite sex was abundant, compared to where the opposite sex was scarce. Abstract: Prior and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have resulted in substantial changes to everyday life. The pandemic and measures of its control affect mental health negatively. Self-reported data from 15,375 participants from 23 countries were collected from May to August 2020 during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two questionnaires measuring anxiety level were used in this study-the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). The associations between a set of social indicators on anxiety during COVID-19 (e.g., sex, age, country, live alone) were tested as well. Self-reported anxiety during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic varied across countries, with the maximum levels reported for Brazil, Canada, Italy, Iraq and the USA. Sex differences of anxiety levels during COVID-19 were also examined, and results showed women reported higher levels of anxiety compared to men. Overall, our results demonstrated that the self-reported symptoms of anxiety were higher compared to those reported in general before pandemic. Abstract: Across the world, millions of couples get married each year. One of the strongest predictors of whether partners will remain in their relationship is their reported satisfaction. Marital satisfaction is commonly found to be a key predictor of both individual and relational well-being. Despite its importance in predicting relationship longevity, there are relatively few empirical research studies examining predictors of marital satisfaction outside of a Western context. To address this gap in the literature and complete the existing knowledge about global predictors of marital satisfaction, we used an open-access database of self-reported assessments of self-reported marital satisfaction with data from 7178 participants representing 33 di erent countries. The results showed that sex, age, religiosity, economic status, education, and cultural values were related, to various extents, to marital satisfaction across cultures. However, marriage duration, number of children, and gross domestic product (GDP) were not found to be predictors of marital satisfaction for countries represented in this sample. While 96% of the variance of marital satisfaction was attributed to individual factors, only 4% was associated with countries. Together, the results show that individual di erences have a larger influence on marital satisfaction compared to the country of origin. Abstract: Seventy-nine percent of internet users use Facebook, and on average they access Facebook eight times a day (Greenwood et al., 2016). To put these numbers into perspective, according to Clement (2019), around 30% of the world’s population uses this Online Social Network (OSN) site. Despite the constantly growing body of academic research on Facebook (Chou et al., 2009 ; Back et al., 2010 ; Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010 ; McAndrew and Jeong, 2012 ; Wilson et al., 2012 ; Krasnova et al., 2017), there remains limited research regarding the motivation behind Facebook use across different cultures. Our main goal was to collect data from a large cross-cultural sample of Facebook users to examine the roles of sex, age, and, most importantly, cultural differences underlying Facebook use.

Abstract: WOS: 000442930300311, PubMed ID: 29955865, Olfaction plays an important role in human social communication, including multiple domains in which people often rely on their sense of smell in the social context. The importance of the sense of smell and its role can however vary inter-individually and culturally. Despite the growing body of literature on differences in olfactory performance or hedonic preferences across the globe, the aspects of a given culture as well as culturally universal individual differences affecting odor awareness in human social life remain unknown. Here, we conducted a large-scale analysis of data collected from 10 794 participants from 52 study sites from 44 countries all over the world. The aim of our research was to explore the potential individual and country-level correlates of odor awareness in the social context. The results show that the individual characteristics were more strongly related than country-level factors to self-reported odor awareness in different social contexts. A model including individual-level predictors (gender, age, material situation, education, and preferred social distance) provided a relatively good fit to the data, but adding country-level predictors (Human Development Index, population density, and average temperature) did not improve model parameters. Although there were some cross-cultural differences in social odor awareness, the main differentiating role was played by the individual differences. Abstract: WOS: 000399920900008, Human spatial behavior has been the focus of hundreds of previous research studies. However, the conclusions and generalizability of previous studies on interpersonal distance preferences were limited by some important methodological and sampling issues. The objective of the present study was to compare preferred interpersonal distances across the world and to overcome the problems observed in previous studies. We present an extensive analysis of interpersonal distances over a large data set (N = 8,943 participants from 42 countries). We attempted to relate the preferred social, personal, and intimate distances observed in each country to a set of individual characteristics of the participants, and some attributes of their cultures. Our study indicates that individual characteristics (age and gender) influence interpersonal space preferences and that some variation in results can be explained by temperature in a given region. Abstract: WOS: 000380938000001, PubMed ID: 27551269, Objective: Theories about how couples help each other to cope with stress, such as the systemic transactional model of dyadic coping, suggest that the cultural context in which couples live influences how their coping behavior affects their relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the theoretical assumptions, a recent meta-analysis provides evidence that neither culture, nor gender, influences the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction, at least based on their samples of couples living in North America and West Europe. Thus, it is an open questions whether the theoretical assumptions of cultural influences are false or whether cultural influences on couple behavior just occur in cultures outside of the Western world. Method: In order to examine the cultural influence, using a sample of married individuals N = 7973) from 35 nations, we used multilevel modeling to test whether the positive association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies across nations and whether gender might moderate the association. Results: Results reveal that the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies between nations. In addition, results show that in some nations the association is higher for men and in other nations it is higher for women. Conclusions: Cultural and gender differences across the globe influence how couples' coping behavior affects relationship outcomes. This crucial finding indicates that couple relationship education programs and interventions need to be culturally adapted, as skill trainings such as dyadic coping lead to differential effects on relationship satisfaction based on the culture in which couples live., Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Public Welfare Foundation Propondis, PS and AS were supported by funds of Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (scholarships to PS for years 2012-2017, and scholarship to AS for years 2013-2016). Abstract: The leg-to-body ratio (LBR) is a morphological index that has been shown to influence a person’s attractiveness. In our research, 3,103 participants from 27 nations rated the physical attractiveness of seven male and seven female silhouettes varying in LBR. We found that male and female silhouettes with short and excessively long legs were perceived as less attractive across all nations. Hence, the LBR may significantly influence perceptions of physical attractiveness across nations.
