Abstract Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic emergent paramyxovirus that can cause severe encephalitis and respiratory infections in humans, with a high fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%. Currently, there are no approved human vaccines or antiviral drugs against NiV. Here, we designed a ferritin-based self-assembling nanoparticle displaying the NiV G head domain on the surface (NiV G-ferritin) and assessed immune responses elicited by the soluble NiV G head domain (NiV sG) or NiV G-ferritin. Immunization with NiV G-ferritin or NiV sG conferred complete protection against lethal NiV challenge without detection of viral RNA in Syrian golden hamsters. Compared to NiV sG, NiV G-ferritin induced significantly faster, broader, and higher serum neutralizing responses against three pathogenic henipaviruses (NiV-Malaysia, NiV-Bangladesh, and Hendra virus). Moreover, NiV G-ferritin induced a durable neutralizing immunity in mice as antisera potently inhibited NiV infection even after six months of the third immunization. Additionally, we isolated a panel of 27 NiV G-binding monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from NiV G-ferritin immunized mice and found that these mAbs targeted four distinct antigenic sites on NiV G head domain with two sites that have not been defined previously. Notably, 25 isolated mAbs have potent neutralizing activity with 50% inhibitory concentrations less than 10 ng/mL against NiV pseudovirus. Collectively, these findings provide new insights into the immunogenicity of NiV G protein and reveal that NiV G-ferritin is a safe and highly effective vaccine candidate against Nipah virus infection.

Abstract Tin-lead halide perovskites with a bandgap near 1.2 electron-volt hold great promise for thin-film photovoltaics. However, the film quality of solution-processed Sn-Pb perovskites is compromised by the asynchronous crystallization behavior between Sn and Pb components, where the crystallization of Sn-based perovskites tends to occur faster than that of Pb. Here we show that the rapid crystallization of Sn is rooted in its stereochemically active lone pair, which impedes coordination between the metal ion and Lewis base ligands in the perovskite precursor. From this perspective, we introduce a noncovalent binding agent targeting the open metal site of coordinatively unsaturated Sn(II) solvates, thereby synchronizing crystallization kinetics and homogenizing Sn-Pb alloying. The resultant single-junction Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells achieve a certified power conversion efficiency of 24.13 per cent. The encapsulated device retains 90 per cent of the initial efficiency after 795 h of maximum power point operation under simulated one-sun illumination.

Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging bunyavirus that causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome with a fatality rate of up to 30%. No licensed vaccines or therapeutics are currently available for humans. Here, we develop seven monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against SFTSV surface glycoprotein Gn. Mechanistic studies show that three neutralizing mAbs (S2A5, S1G3, and S1H7) block multiple steps during SFTSV infection, including viral attachment and membrane fusion, whereas another neutralizing mAb (B1G11) primarily inhibits the viral attachment step. Epitope binning and X-ray crystallographic analyses reveal four distinct antigenic sites on Gn, three of which have not previously been reported, corresponding to domain I, domain II, and spanning domain I and domain II. One of the most potent neutralizing mAbs, S2A5, binds to a conserved epitope on Gn domain I and broadly neutralizes infection of six SFTSV strains corresponding to genotypes A to F. A single dose treatment of S2A5 affords both pre- and post-exposure protection of mice against lethal SFTSV challenge without apparent weight loss. Our results support the importance of glycoprotein Gn for eliciting a robust humoral response and pave a path for developing prophylactic and therapeutic antibodies against SFTSV infection.

AimThis study aimed to develop a marital self-disclosure programme to alleviate the fear of cancer recurrence in patients with gastric cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy.DesignDelphi method.MethodsData from available literature and stakeholder interviews were utilised to formulate the initial draft of a marital self-disclosure programme aimed to alleviate the fear of cancer recurring in patients with gastric cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. A panel of experts subsequently conducted a two-round modified Delphi method to finalise the programme.ResultsA total of 13 experts participated in the first round of consultation, while 11 experts were involved in the second round, as two experts withdrew due to unavailability. The response rates of both rounds of expert consultation were 100 and 84.62%, respectively, and the expert authority coefficients (Cr) of the programme were 0.83 and 0.84, respectively. The coordination coefficients of the expert opinions were 0.124 (χ2 = 61.214, p = 0.010) and 0.167 (χ2 = 69.668, p = 0.001) for each Delphi round. The average score of the second round was (4.545 ± 0.688) to (5.000 ± 0), with a full score ratio of 0.55–1.00. The coefficient of variation (CV) ranged from 0 to 0.031. Outcomes from both rounds of consultations were considered acceptable and credible. The finalised marital self-disclosure programme for alleviating the fear of cancer recurrence in patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy consists of two parts; disclosure guidance for patients and their spouse with nine items, and the structure and themes of marital self-disclosure with 31 items.Patient or public contributionAfter two rounds of expert consultations, the marital self-disclosure programme for patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy is suggested to be scientifically valid and reliable. This programme is anticipated to potentially support patients and their spouses effectively by providing a reliable intervention plan focused on alleviating the fear of cancer recurrence.

Alzheimer’s disease (Alzheimer’s disease, AD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive impairment. It is characterized by the formation of tau protein neurofibrillary tangles and β-amyloid plaques. Recent studies have found that mitochondria in neuronal cells of AD patients exhibit various dysfunctions, including reduced numbers, ultrastructural changes, reduced enzyme activity, and abnormal kinetics. These abnormal mitochondria not only lead to the loss of normal neuronal cell function, but are also a major driver of AD progression. In this review, we will focus on the advances of mitochondria and their multi-omics in AD research, with particular emphasis on how mitochondrial dysfunction in AD drives disease progression. At the same time, we will focus on summarizing how mitochondrial genomics technologies have revealed specific details of these dysfunctions and how therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria may provide new directions for future AD treatments. By delving into the key mechanisms of mitochondria in AD related to energy metabolism, altered kinetics, regulation of cell death, and dysregulation of calcium-ion homeostasis, and how mitochondrial multi-omics technologies can be utilized to provide us with a better understanding of these processes. In the future, mitochondria-centered therapeutic strategies will be a key idea in the treatment of AD.

Diabetic retinopathy is the major cause of blindness in diabetic patients, with limited treatment options that do not always restore optimal vision. Retinal nerve degeneration and vascular degeneration are two primary pathological processes of diabetic retinopathy. The retinal nervous system and vascular cells have a close coupling relationship. The connection between neurodegeneration and vascular degeneration is not yet fully understood. Recent studies have found that microRNA plays a role in regulating diabetic retinal neurovascular degeneration and can help delay the progression of the disease. This article will review how microRNA acts as a bridge connecting diabetic retinal neurodegeneration and vascular degeneration, focusing on the mechanisms of apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial factors. The aim is to identify valuable targets for new research and clinical treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

Acquiring a comprehensive understanding of cropping patterns and their spatiotemporal distribution is crucial for sustainable agricultural development and ecological environment protection. However, the similarity of crop spectra and the diversity of ecosystem types hinder the accurate mapping of cropping patterns, especially in agricultural landscape regions. Hence, taking Xinghua County as study area, this article proposed a novel method for integrating multidimensional feature indices and phenological windows, named phenological window feature (PWF), to achieve efficient and accurate mapping of cropping patterns. In this study, we adopt a two-step approach. First, time-series curves of feature indices were constructed using Sentinel-1/2 satellite data to determine the phenological windows of different cropping patterns and construct PWF sets. Then, the ruleset threshold method (RTM) and random forest (RF) algorithms were used to map cropping patterns including wheat-rice, crayfish-rice, vegetable-rice, rice-rapeseed, rapeseed-vegetable, and year-round vegetables. The results indicate that the phenological windows extracted from the cropping patterns in the study area were 30–120, 90–135, and 200–270 days, respectively. The overall accuracies of RTM and RF, based on PWF, were 85.91% and 89.50%, respectively, and the kappa coefficients for RTM and RF were 0.831 and 0.872, respectively. In terms of classification performance, RF slightly outperformed RTM. The study demonstrates that PWF proposed in this article can be effectively utilized for mapping cropping patterns in complex agricultural landscape regions.

BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the knowledge and attitude (KA) toward postoperative antithrombotic management and prevention among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients who underwent coronary revascularization.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled CAD outpatients and inpatients between May and December 2023 at Kailuan Medical Group at Tangshan. Basic demographic characteristics and KA scores were collected through a self-made questionnaire.ResultsThis study included 523 valid questionnaires. The mean knowledge and attitude scores were 13.20 ± 6.20 (range: 0–26) and 43.68 ± 6.01 (range: 21–50), respectively, indicating poor knowledge and favorable attitude. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that junior high school education (OR = 2.160, P = 0.035), high school or technical school education (OR = 2.356, P = 0.039), and monthly average income >5,000 RMB (OR = 3.407, P = 0.002) were independently associated with knowledge. Knowledge (OR = 1.095, P = 0.002), BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2 (OR = 0.372, P = 0.011), junior high school (OR = 3.699, P = 0.002), high school or technical school (OR = 2.903, P = 0.028), high associate degree or above education (OR = 6.068, P = 0.014), monthly average income 3,000–5,000 RMB (OR = 0.296, P = 0.005), monthly average income > 5,000 RMB (OR = 0.225, P = 0.021), with hypertension (OR = 0.333, P = 0.003), blood tests every 2–3 weeks (OR = 10.811, P = 0.011), blood tests every month (OR = 4.221, P = 0.024), and blood tests every 2–3 months (OR = 3.342, P = 0.033) were independently associated with attitude.ConclusionCAD patients who underwent coronary revascularization had poor knowledge but favorable attitudes toward postoperative antithrombotic management and prevention. The study underscores the need for targeted education, especially for individuals with lower education and income levels, ultimately improving patient compliance and cardiovascular outcomes.

BackgroundPatients with gastric cancer experience different degrees of fear of cancer recurrence. The fear of cancer recurrence can cause and worsen many physical and psychological problems. We considered the “intimacy and relationship processes in couples’ psychosocial adaptation” model. ObjectiveThe study aims to examine the effectiveness of a marital self-disclosure intervention for improving the level of fear of cancer recurrence and the dyadic coping ability among gastric cancer survivors and their spouses. MethodsThis is a quasiexperimental study with a nonequivalent (pretest-posttest) control group design. The study will be conducted at 2 tertiary hospitals in Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 42 patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy and their spouses will be recruited from each hospital. Participants from Jingjiang People’s Hospital will be assigned to an experimental group, while participants from Taizhou People’s Hospital will be assigned to a control group. The participants in the experimental group will be involved in 4 phases of the marital self-disclosure (different topics, face-to-face) intervention. Patients will be evaluated at baseline after a diagnosis of gastric cancer and reassessed 2 to 4 months after baseline. The primary outcome is the score of the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF) for patients. The secondary outcomes are the scores of the FoP-Q-SF for partners and the Dyadic Coping Inventory. ResultsResearch activities began in October 2022. Participant enrollment and data collection began in February 2023 and are expected to be completed in 12 months. The primary results of this study are anticipated to be announced in June 2024. ConclusionsThis study aims to assess a marital self-disclosure intervention for improving the fear of cancer recurrence in Chinese patients with gastric cancer and their spouses. The study is likely to yield desirable positive outcomes as marital self-disclosure is formulated based on evidence and inputs obtained through stakeholder interviews and expert consultation. The study process will be carried out by nurses who have received psychological training, and the quality of the intervention will be strictly controlled. With the global population growth and increasing demand for high-quality protein, aquaculture has experienced rapid development. Fish culture management and feed supply are crucial components of aquaculture. Traditional baiting management relies on experiential judgment and regular observation, which often leads to inefficient baiting practices and wastage. To address these issues, intelligent bait casting decisions have emerged. Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, intelligent bait casting decisions can overcome most drawbacks of traditional bait management and enhance breeding efficiency. However, most of the current intelligent baiting decisions are focused on using methods such as image processing and target detection to identify different feeding actions and patterns. These methods do not discuss based on video streams and do not consider the changes in fish behavior during the baiting process. Therefore, we proposed a real-time analysis method based on the density distribution of fish feeding behavior (FishFeed). Firstly, this method upgrades the input mechanism, not only handling static images but also capable of real-time video stream analysis. Secondly, by evaluating the fish school density distribution through a new intelligent baiting strategy, this method can monitor the feeding behavior of fish school during the baiting process in real time. Finally, we constructed a dataset for fish school density analysis (DlouFishDensity) that includes a wealth of video and image frames, providing a valuable resource for research. Experimental results indicate that our algorithm outperforms MCNN, improving MAE by 1.63 and 1.35, MSE by 1.92 and 1.58, and reducing prediction time by 2.56 seconds on the same dataset. By implementing real-time analysis of fish feeding behavior density distribution, our method offers a more efficient and effective approach to baiting management in aquaculture, contributing to improved breeding efficiency and resource utilization.

Background/purpose: Gingival phenotype (GP) has been reported to influence the treatment planning and clinical outcomes in several dental specialties. This study aimed to investigate optimal cutoff values for gingival thickness (GT) measurement at different landmarks to determine GP. The correlations between GT and bone thickness (BT) of buccal alveolar crest were also analyzed. Materials and methods: A total of 600 teeth were included. GP was clinically determined by the transparency of a periodontal probe through the gingival margin (TRAN). Measurements for free gingival thickness (GT1), cementoenamel junction gingival thickness (GT2), supracrestal gingival thickness (GT3), subcrestal 1 mm gingival thickness (GT4) and BT at 1, 3 mm apical from the alveolar crest edge (BT1 and BT2) were assessed on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to evaluate correlations between GT and BT. Results: The optimal cutoff values of GT using CBCT method to discriminate GP were 0.75 mm for GT1, 0.85 mm for GT2, 1.15 mm for GT3 and 0.45 mm for GT4. There was significantly positive correlation between GT and BT at all levels (r: 0.375–0.903). The correlations between GT3 and BT (r: 0.789–0.903) were strong, while correlations between GT4 and BT were weak (r: 0.375–0.467). Conclusion: The optimal cutoff values of gingival thickness using CBCT method to discriminate gingival phenotype at each gingival landmark were determined. The supracrestal gingival thickness might be an indicator of buccal alveolar crest bone thickness, which could provide valuable perspectives on clinical diagnosis, treatment planning and decision-making.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first reported three years ago, when a group of individuals were infected with the original SARS-CoV-2 strain, based on which vaccines were developed. Here, we develop six human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from two elite convalescents in Wuhan and show that these mAbs recognize diverse epitopes on the receptor binding domain (RBD) and can inhibit the infection of SARS-CoV-2 original strain and variants of concern (VOCs) to varying degrees, including Omicron strains XBB and XBB.1.5. Of these mAbs, the two most broadly and potently neutralizing mAbs (7B3 and 14B1) exhibit prophylactic activity against SARS-CoV-2 WT infection and therapeutic effects against SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant challenge in K18-hACE2 KI mice. Furthermore, post-exposure treatment with 7B3 protects mice from lethal Omicron variants infection. Cryo-EM analysis of the spike trimer complexed with 14B1 or 7B3 reveals that these two mAbs bind partially overlapped epitopes onto the RBD of the spike, and sterically disrupt the binding of human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) to RBD. Our results suggest that mAbs with broadly neutralizing activity against different SARS-CoV-2 variants are present in COVID-19 convalescents infected by the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain, indicating that people can benefit from former infections or vaccines despite the extensive immune escape of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract The rapid spread of monkeypox in multiple countries has resulted in a global public health threat and has caused international concerns since May 2022. Poxvirus encoded M2 protein is a member of the poxvirus immune evasion family and plays roles in host immunomodulation via the regulation of innate immune response mediated by the NF-κB pathway and adaptive immune response mediated by B7 ligands. However, the interaction of monkeypox virus (MPXV) M2 with B7 ligands and structural insight into poxviral M2 function have remained elusive. Here we reveal that MPXV M2, co-existing as a hexamer and a heptamer, recognizes human B7.1 and B7.2 (hB7.1/2) with high avidities. The binding of oligomeric MPXV M2 interrupts the interactions of hB7.1/2 with CD28 and CTLA4 and subverts T cell activation mediated by B7.1/2 costimulatory signals. Cryo-EM structures of M2 in complex with hB7.1/2 show that M2 binds to the shallow concave face of hB7.1/2 and displays sterically competition with CD28 and CTLA4 for the binding to hB7.1/2. Our findings provide structural mechanisms of poxviral M2 function and immune evasion deployed by poxviruses.

Abstract Obesity and metabolic syndromes are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Insulin resistance (IR) is a common complication of obesity. However, IR occurrence varies across individuals with obesity and may involve epigenetic factors. To rationalize the allocation of healthcare resources, biomarkers for the early risk stratification of individuals with obesity should be identified. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are closely associated with metabolic diseases and involved in epigenetic regulation. In this review, we have summarized the changes in miRNA expression in the peripheral circulation and tissues of patients and animals with obesity-associated IR over the last 5 years and identified several candidate biomarkers that predict obesity-related IR. There are areas for improvement in existing studies. First, more than the predictive validity of a single biomarker is required, and a biomarker panel needs to be formed. Second, miRNAs are often studied in isolation and do not form a network of signaling pathways. We believe that early biomarkers can help clinicians accurately predict individuals prone to obesity-related IR at an early stage. Epigenetic regulation may be one of the underlying causes of different clinical outcomes in individuals with obesity. Future studies should focus on objectively reflecting the differences in miRNA profile expression in individuals with obesity-related IR, which may help identify more reliable biomarkers. Understanding the metabolic pathways of these miRNAs can help design new metabolic risk prevention and management strategies, and support the development of drugs to treat obesity and metabolic disorders.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a refractory orthopedic condition characterized by bone cell ischemia, necrosis, bone trabecular fracture, and clinical symptoms such as pain, femoral head collapse, and joint dysfunction that can lead to disability. The disability rate of ONFH is very high, which imposes a significant economic burden on both families and society. Steroid-associated osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SANFH) is the most common type of ONFH. However, the pathogenesis of SANFH remains unclear, and it is an urgent challenge for orthopedic surgeons to explore it. In this paper, the pathogenesis of SANFH and its related signaling pathways were briefly reviewed to enhance comprehension of the pathogenesis and prevention of SANFH.

Recovering valuable active substances from the by-products of agricultural processing is a crucial concern for scientific researchers. This paper focuses on the enrichment of soybean trypsin inhibitor (STI) from soybean whey wastewater using either ammonium sulfate salting or ethanol precipitation, and discusses their physicochemical properties. The results show that at a 60% ethanol content, the yield of STI was 3.983 mg/mL, whereas the yield was 3.833 mg/mL at 60% ammonium sulfate saturation. The inhibitory activity of STI obtained by ammonium sulfate salting out (A-STI) was higher than that obtained by ethanol precipitation (E-STI). A-STI exhibited better solubility than E-STI at specific temperatures and pH levels, as confirmed by turbidity and surface hydrophobicity measurements. Thermal characterization revealed that both A-STI and E-STI showed thermal transition temperatures above 90 °C. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that A-STI had a smooth surface with fewer pores, while E-STI had a rough surface with more pores. In conclusion, there was no significant difference in the yield of A-STI and E-STI (p < 0.05); however, the physicochemical properties of A-STI were superior to those of E-STI, making it more suitable for further processing and utilization. This study provides a theoretical reference for the enrichment of STI from soybean whey wastewater.

High-speed steels (HSSs) are frequently utilized as cutting tools and wear-resistant components for a variety of applications because of their exceptional hot hardness and desirable wear resistance. Over the last few decades, numerous strategies for the manufacture of HSS components have been developed. Among these methods, advanced manufacturing (AM) techniques, including powder bed fusion (PBF), direct energy deposition (DED), and material jetting (MJ), have gained great scientific attention because they allow the fabrication of complicated mechanical components with high customization and specialized qualities. However, a comprehensive review of the recent progress of AM of HSSs is still lacking and this paper aims to address this need. This present paper reviews all the significant attributes of the state-of-the-art AM techniques for the fabrication of HSSs. The process designs of AM by means of PBF, DED, and MJ are discussed and compared. Process modeling work, including the microstructure prediction and solidification behavior of AM-fabricated HSS is reviewed. The microstructural evolutions during AM processes in terms of carbide precipitation dynamics, grain growth behavior and defect formation mechanism of HSSs are discussed. Moreover, the engineering properties of the AMed HSS are summarized, including residual stress, hardness, strength, impact toughness and enhanced wear resistance. Furthermore, the existing difficulties of AM technology and the future research objectives for producing HSS components are offered and explored.

Abstract Neurostimulation has emerged as a potential remedy for early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI). However, further exploration is needed on how external stimulation of brain regions promotes the transition of the brain state from EMCI to health and the selection of target locations. In this study, a functional magnetic resonance imaging dataset was used to evaluate the brain states of healthy individuals and patients with EMCI to explore the probabilistic metastable substate space, identifying abnormal manifestations of EMCI. Stimulation targets were then identified and stimulated to achieve complete controllability of the effective connection network for EMCI. A whole‐brain model successfully fitted the brain state of the patients with EMCI based on diffusion tensor imaging data. Based on this whole‐brain model, stimulation of the hippocampus, medial frontal gyrus, suboccipital gyrus, and fusiform gyrus can promote the transformation of the brain state from EMCI to health. The findings reveal the underlying brain mechanisms of cognitive decline in patients with EMCI and the stimulation targets of the neural mechanisms of EMCI restoration, which could help in designing more effective therapeutic interventions for EMCI.

BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the characteristics of pediatric upper gastrointestinal (UGI) perforations, focusing on their diagnosis and management.MethodsBetween January 2013 and December 2021, 30 children with confirmed UGI perforations were enrolled, and their clinical data were analyzed. Two groups were compared according to management options, including open surgical repair (OSR) and laparoscopic/gastroscopic repair (LR).ResultsA total of 30 patients with a median age of 36.0 months (1 day–17 years) were included in the study. There were 19 and 11 patients in the LR and OSR groups, respectively. In the LR group, two patients were treated via exploratory laparoscopy and OSR, and the other patients were managed via gastroscopic repair. Ten and three patients presented the duration from symptom onset to diagnosis within 24 h (p = 0.177) and the number of patients with hemodynamically unstable perforations was 4 and 3 in the LR and OSR groups, respectively. Simple suture or clip closure was performed in 27 patients, and laparoscopically pedicled omental patch repair was performed in two patients. There was no significant difference in operative time and length of hospital stay between the LR and OSR groups. Treatment failed in two patients because of severe sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, including one with fungal peritonitis.ConclusionSurgery for pediatric UGI perforations should be selected according to the general status of the patient, age of the patient, duration from symptom onset, inflammation, and perforation site and size. Antibiotic administration and surgical closure remain the main strategies for pediatric UGI perforations.

Abstract Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic disorder characterized by hyperproliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). JMJD1C, a member of the Jumonji domain containing C (JMJC) histone demethylase family, contributes to cardiovascular dysfunction. However, the role of JMJD1C in PAH remains unknown. Mice were exposed to hypoxia to mimic several features associated with PAH clinically. We found that JMJD1C was highly expressed in the lungs of mice after hypoxia exposure. JMJD1C knockdown ameliorated hypoxia-induced right ventricular remodeling and thickening of the pulmonary arterial wall. PASMC hyperproliferation and resistance to apoptosis in mice exposed to hypoxia were suppressed by JMJD1C inhibition. We demonstrated that JMJD1C silencing reduced glycolytic enzymes (HK2, PGK1 and LDHA) and lactate overaccumulation in the lungs of mice exposed to hypoxia. In vitro, hypoxia-induced hyperproliferation and activated glycolytic processes in mouse PASMCs were impaired by JMJD1C knockdown. In addition, the activation of STAT3 signaling by hypoxia was suppressed by JMJD1C silencing both in vivo and in vitro. The overexpression of STAT3 reversed the inhibitory effect of JMJD1C depletion on proliferation and glycolysis in PASMCs under hypoxia. Thus, JMJD1C induces glycolytic processes by activating STAT3 signaling to promote PASMC proliferation and pulmonary vascular remodeling, suggesting the potential role of JMJD1C in regulating the metabolic program and vascular remodeling in PAH.

Abstract Background The triglyceride–glucose index (TyG index), an alternative indicator of peripheral insulin resistance (IR), is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. The aim of this research was to determine the correlation between early-onset stroke and the TyG index among young Chinese adults. Methods Participants (age ≤ 40 years) who attended their first physical examination in Kailuan General Hospital or its 11 subsidiary hospitals between 2006 and 2012 were enrolled. The subjects were divided into four equal points according to the quartile of the TyG index, with the lowest quartile (Q1) as the reference group. A Cox proportional hazard model was employed to assess the correlation between early-onset stroke incidence and the TyG index. Restricted cubic spline analysis was further conducted to examine nonlinear associations. The TyG index was calculated as Ln [Triglyceride (TG, mg/dL) × Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG, mg/dL)/2]. Results Overall, 35,999 subjects met the inclusion criteria. Their mean age was 30.8 ± 5.7 years, and 77.1% of subjects were males. During a median observation period of 11 years, 281 stroke events occurred (62 hemorrhagic strokes and 219 ischemic strokes). The inherent stochasticity of electric operation vehicle (EOV) charging poses challenges to the stability and efficiency of regional power distribution networks. Existing charging behavior decision-making models often prioritize revenue considerations, neglecting the influence of multi-time-span characteristics and the potential irrationality of EOV owners. To address these limitations, this study proposes a comprehensive framework encompassing three aspects. First, operational data are statistically analyzed to reconstruct EOV operation scenarios, establishing a dynamic charging scheme tailored to multi-time-span characteristics. Second, an improved ITCH model is developed using operational equivalent change to incorporate both gains and losses. Third, a WFL framework is employed to integrate the perceptual attenuation of revenue into the ITCH model. Simulation results show that decision-makers (DMs) demonstrate a preference for charging schemes with high equivalent perceived revenues and low time costs. Moreover, when the charging price is doubled, revenue perception attenuation leads decision-makers to postpone their charging behavior. Compared to other models, the equivalent perception intertemporal choice heuristics (EP-ITCH) charging model results in reduced load peaks, valleys, and variances on the grid side. This study highlights the model’s effectiveness and accuracy in optimizing EOV charging infrastructure.

The relative sunspot number is one of the major parameters for the study of long-term solar activity. The automatic calculation of the relative sunspot number is more stable and accurate as compared to manual methods. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can detect sunspots, and divide them into groups to automatically calculate the relative sunspot number. Mathematical morphology was adopted to detect sunspots then group them. The data set used were the continuum images from SDO/HMI. The process was carried out on the overall HMI data available on the timespan from 2022 January to 2023 May with a time cadence of one day. The experimental results indicated that the method achieved high accuracy of 85.3%. It was well fitted with the international relative sunspot number provided by Solar Influences Data Analysis Center (CC = 0.91). We calculated the conversion factor K value of SDO/HMI for calculating the relative sunspots number ( K = 1.03).

Abstract Currently, no specific treatments are available for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the preclinical stage of AD, has a high possibility of reversing symptoms through neural regulation. A state dynamics model for single brain regions was developed to simulate blood oxygen level‐dependent signals in a patient with early mild cognitive impairment. Subsequently, the analysis of functional connections was used to comprehensively consider multiple complex network centralities to locate the intervention targets, and a multiple brain region collaborative control scheme was designed. Finally, the reliability and effectiveness of the intervention were verified at the brain region and subnetwork levels. This technique provides a basis for future clinical diagnosis and treatment of AD and MCI.

Abstract Most neuroimaging studies of the pathogenesis of early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI) rely on a node‐centric network model, which only calculates correlations between brain regions. Considering the interaction of low‐order correlations between pairs of brain regions, we use an edge‐centric network model to study high‐order functional network correlations. Here, we compute edge time series (eTS) to obtain overlapping communities and study the relationship between subnetworks and communities in space. Then, based on the overlapping communities, we calculate the normalized entropy to measure the diversity of each node. Next, we compute the high‐amplitude co‐fluctuation of the eTS to explore the pattern of brain activity with temporal precision. Our results show that the normal control and EMCI patients differ in brain regions, subnetworks, and the whole brain. In particular, entropy values show a gradual decrease, and brain network co‐fluctuation increases with disease progression. Our study is the first to investigate the pathogenesis of EMCI from the perspective of spatiotemporal flexibility and cognitive diversity based on high‐order edge connectivity, further characterizing brain dynamics and providing new insights into the search for biomarkers of EMCI.

BackgroundThe association between mean arterial pressure (MAP) trajectory in young adults and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and all-cause mortality is not well-characterized. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different MAP trajectory on the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality among the young.MethodsIn the Kailuan cohort study, 19,171 participants aged 18–40 years were enrolled without CVD (including myocardial infarction, stroke, atrial fibrillation and heart failure). The potential hybrid model was used to fit different trajectory patterns according to longitudinal changes of MAP. Hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for risk of CVD and all-cause mortality were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression models for participants with different trajectories.ResultsFive distinct MAP trajectories were identified during 2006–2013. Each of the trajectories was labelled as low-stable, middle-stable, decreasing, increasing, or high-stable. With the low-stable trajectory group as the reference, the multivariate adjusted HR (95%CI) of CVD for the middle-stable, decreasing, increasing and high-stable groups were 2.49 (1.41–4.40), 5.18 (2.66–10.06), 5.91 (2.96–11.80) and 12.68 (6.30–25.51), respectively. The HR (95%CI) for all-cause deaths were 1.27 (0.84–1.94), 2.01 (1.14–3.55), 1.96 (1.04–4.3.72), and 3.28 (1.69–6.37), respectively.ConclusionIn young adults, MAP trajectories were associated with the risk of CVD or all-cause mortality and increasing MAP trajectories within the currently designated “normal” range may still increase the risk for CVD.

Large-scale deep-sea wind farms are a significant direction for wind power development. With the continuous growth of the capacity of a single offshore wind farm, it is necessary to study the impact of grid connection of large-capacity offshore wind farms on the normal operation of the power grid, which can guarantee the safety and stability of the power grid. Based on the smooth working of the power system, it is meaningful to determining the limit access capacity of offshore wind farms for guiding offshore wind power planning. In this paper, an evaluation index system for the operation characteristics of offshore wind farms integrated into regional power grids is constructed, and based on that, the influence of offshore wind farms on the safety, stability, economy and power quality of regional power system operation is studied, and the grid-connected power limit of offshore wind farms is further calculated.

Abstract A marked elevation of TLR4 was observed in various organs of septic mice. The mechanism of TLR4 in intestinal epithelial cell damage in sepsis remains unclear. CLP mice models were used to assess the role of TLR4 in intestinal Paneth cell damage by histological, polymerase chain reaction, western-blot analyses. The ileal expression of TLR4 was increased by more than five-fold after CLP. CLP significantly increased 7-day mortality and was associated with a higher murine sepsis score (MSS), closely related with increased TLR4 expression. Histological staining revealed that a reduced number of Paneth cells, accompanied by reduced lysozyme and defensin alpha 5(DEF-5) expression as detected by PCR. Of note, the expression levels of ATF6, XBP1 and CHOP increased in the ileal of the sepsis group. Meanwhile, the uncleaved p90 ATF6 was markedly reduced and cleaved p50 ATF6 was increased in the sepsis group. Intriguingly, The TAK-242 had improved intestinal mucosal injury, reduced the expression of ATF6, XBP1 and CHOP and relieved the cleavage of ATF6. We found that increased the expression level of TLR4 in the ileal of CLP mice promoted the depletion of Paneth cell and reduced LYZ and DEF-5 expression. Furthermore, our findings suggested that TLR4-mediated the hyperactivation of ER stress, via activating the ATF6/CHOP pathway, might be one of the mechanisms associated with Paneth cells loss and dysfunction during intestinal barrier impairment of sepsis.

To explore the relationship between diet and human health, this study aimed to evaluate the beneficial effects of the existing Guangxi longevity dietary pattern on the human body from metabolomics. After 2 weeks of habitual diet, the selected volunteers followed this dietary pattern with high adherence for the same period. The blood and fecal samples were collected 3 times then performed metabolomics analysis, including before the habitual diet, the beginning (which was also the ending point of habitual diet) and the end of Guangxi longevity dietary pattern. Accurate fish individual recognition is one of the critical technologies for large-scale fishery farming when trying to achieve accurate, green farming and sustainable development. It is an essential link for aquaculture to move toward automation and intelligence. However, existing fish individual data collection methods cannot cope with the interference of light, blur, and pose in the natural underwater environment, which makes the captured fish individual images of poor quality. These low-quality images can cause significant interference with the training of recognition networks. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes an underwater fish individual recognition method (FishFace) that combines data quality assessment and loss weighting. First, we introduce the Gem pooing and quality evaluation module, which is based on EfficientNet. This module is an improved fish recognition network that can evaluate the quality of fish images well, and it does not need additional labels; second, we propose a new loss function, FishFace Loss, which will weigh the loss according to the quality of the image so that the model focuses more on recognizable fish images, and less on images that are difficult to recognize. Finally, we collect a dataset for fish individual recognition (WideFish), which contains and annotates 5000 images of 300 fish. The experimental results show that, compared with the state-of-the-art individual recognition methods, Rank1 accuracy is improved by 2.60% and 3.12% on the public dataset DlouFish and the proposed WideFish dataset, respectively.

Little is known about how rejecting and controlling parenting styles may influence adolescent psychological crisis and what conditions may buffer the detrimental effects of psychological crisis. By integrating multiple theories, this study investigated self-esteem as an underlying mediator and school connectedness as a potential moderator to explain the link between negative parenting and the two psychological crises among Chinese adolescents. In this study, the questionnaire method is adopted to examine the combined mechanism of rejecting parenting style and controlling parenting style on the psychological crisis of adolescents. In total, 1863 adolescents were involved in this study, ranging from 13 to 17 years old. The results showed that both the rejecting parenting style and the controlling parenting style can significantly and positively predict the level of psychological crisis of adolescents, but the predictive power of the rejecting parenting style was stronger. Self-esteem partially mediates the relationship between rejecting parenting style, controlling parenting style, and psychological crisis. School connectedness moderates both the effects of rejecting parenting styles on self-esteem and the effects of self-esteem on the psychological crisis. This study identifies the internal mechanisms by which negative parenting styles affect adolescents’ psychological crisis, and reveals the mediating and moderating roles of self-esteem and school connectedness, providing additional explanatory paths for the mechanisms of adolescents’ psychological crisis.

ObjectiveThe triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is considered as a pivotal factor for various metabolic, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. However, there is currently a paucity of relevant studies on the association between long-term level and change of TyG-index and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) risk. We aimed to explore the risk of CMDs in relation to the long-term level and change of TyG-index.MethodsBased on the prospective cohort study, a total of 36359 subjects who were free of CMDs, had complete data of triglyceride (TG) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) and underwent four health check-ups from 2006 to 2012 consecutively were followed up for CMDs until 2021. The associations between long-term level and change of TyG-index and CMDs risk were assessed by Cox proportional hazards regression models to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The TyG-index was calculated as ln [TG, mg/dL) × FBG, mg/dL)/2].ResultsDuring the median observation period of 8 years, 4685 subjects were newly diagnosed with CMDs. In multivariable-adjusted models, a graded positive association was observed between CMDs and long-term TyG-index. Compared with the Q1 group, subjects with the Q2-Q4 group had increased progressively risk of CMDs, with corresponding HRs of 1.64(1.47-1.83), 2.36(2.13-2.62), 3.15(2.84-3.49), respectively. The association was marginally attenuated, after further adjustment for the baseline TyG level. In addition, compared with stable TyG level, both loss and gain in TyG level were associated with increased CMDs risk.ConclusionsLong-term elevated level and change of TyG-index are risk factors for the incident CMDs. Elevated TyG-index in the early stage remains to exert cumulative effects on the occurrence of CMDs even after accounting for the baseline TyG-index.

Cotton is one of the most important crops in the world. GDSL-type esterases/lipases (GELPs) are widely present in all kingdoms and play an essential role in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this functional diversity remain unclear. Here, based on the identification of the GELP gene family, we applied genetic evolution and molecular simulation techniques to explore molecular mechanisms in cotton species. A total of 1502 GELP genes were identified in 10 cotton species. Segmental duplication and differences in evolutionary rates are the leading causes of the increase in the number and diversity of GELP genes during evolution for ecological adaptation. Structural analysis revealed that the GELP family has high structural diversity. Moreover, molecular simulation studies have demonstrated significant differences in the properties of the binding pockets among cotton GELPs. In the process of adapting to the environment, GELPs not only have segmental duplication but also have different evolutionary rates, resulting in gene diversity. This diversity leads to significant differences in the 3D structure and binding pocket properties and, finally, to functional diversity. These findings provide a reference for further functional analyses of plant GELPs.

IntroductionRecent evidence supports a role for the gut microbe-metabolites in longevity. However, the phenomenon of hypertension is more common in the longevity area and whether hypertension is associated with longevity remains unclear. Here, we hypothesize that the levels of gut microbiota, SCFAs, and urine metabolites were different between hypertension elderly and hypertension longevity.MethodsWe recruited 46 elderly volunteers from Donglan County, Guangxi, and 32 were selected and included in the experiment. The subjects with hypertension were divided into two groups according to age, Hypertension Elderly (HTE, aged 70.5 ± 8.59, n = 19) and Hypertension Longevity (HTL, aged 100 ± 5.72, n = 13). The gut microbiota, SCFAs, and urine metabolites were determined by three-generation 16S rRNA full-length sequencing, GC-MS, and 1H-NMR, respectively.ResultsCompared with the HTL group, the HTE group had higher levels of hypertension-related genera Klebsiella and Streptococcus, while having lower levels of the SCFA-producing genera Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, and Alistipes. Based on LEFse analysis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Lactobacillus gasseri, Streptococcus salivarius, Ruminococcus, Actinomyces, Rikenellaceae, f_Saccharimonadaceae, Clostridium perfringens, and Bacteroids, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Parabacteroides, Alistipes were biomarkers that showed significant differences between the groups. In addition, the microbial pathways associated with K. pneumoniae and E. coli may promote hypertension, while A. muciniphila may play a role in reversing the development of hypertension in long-lived elderly. Metabolomics revealed that HTL contained a lower concentration of fecal acetate and propionate than HTE, while it contained a higher concentration of serum acetate and urine acetate. Furthermore, their immune cells exhibited no significant changes in SCFAs receptors.ConclusionAlthough long-lived elderly have extremely high systolic blood pressure, their unique gut microbiota composition and efficient acetate absorption in the colon may offset the damages caused by hypertension and maintain healthy homeostasis.

The effect of nitrogen and zinc treatment on quality and yield was studied to provide a theoretical basis for generating high-quality and high-yielding foxtail millet. In the years 2021–2022, ‘Jingu 21’ was utilized as the test material in a split-plot design. The main plot was subjected to nitrogen treatment, while the sub-plot was treated with zinc. An arrangement of random blocks was employed. Four levels of nitrogen application (0 kg/hm2, 120 kg/hm2, 180 kg/hm2, 240 kg/hm2) and three levels of zinc application (20 mg/L, 40 mg/L, 80 mg/L foliar spraying) were set, resulting in a total of twelve treatments. Each treatment was replicated three times, with each plot covering an area of 15 m2. (1) The findings indicated that the contents of crude fat and crude protein in foxtail millet increased initially and then decreased with the increase in nitrogen application concentration. Additionally, the protein components were found to be in the following order: gliadin > albumin > glutenin > globulin. (2) Adding an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer under the same zinc level promoted the contents of amylose, total carotenoids, and flavonoids in millet to some extent. Over the course of two years, the content of flavonoids in millet was highest when treated with N180Zn40 (nitrogen 180 kg/hm2, zinc 40 mg/L), showing an increase of 50.14% and 58.67%, respectively, compared to the treatment of applying zinc fertilizer alone at the same zinc level. (3) The phytic acid content and phytic acid/zinc molar ratio exhibited a pattern of initially decreasing and then increasing with the rise in nitrogen and zinc concentrations. (4) The application of zinc fertilizer and increased nitrogen fertilizer for two consecutive years had a significant impact on the yield of millet. Additionally, the application of zinc fertilizer had a highly significant effect on both the ear weights and thousand-kernel weights of millet (p < 0.001). The results demonstrated a positive synergistic effect when nitrogen fertilizer and zinc fertilizer were applied together. This combination significantly improved millet yield and thousand-kernel weights, enhanced the nutritional quality, and increased the content of functional components. Additionally, it also improved the availability of zinc.

There is an urgent need to design and synthesize non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) for the replacement of platinum-based electrocatalysts to enhance the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for Zn–air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, Fe-N,S-C materials were fabricated through two steps: first, reprecipitating hemin by adjusting the pH and, then, decorating it with melamine and cysteine in the presence of Zn2+. The resulting Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) was prepared after pyrolysis at 950 °C. Using this method, abundant iron-based active species with good dispersion were obtained. The fabrication of more micropores in Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) plays a positive role in the improvement of ORR activity. On comparison, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) outperforms Fe-N,S-C-950 and Fe-N-C-950 (Zn) with respect to the ORR due to its larger specific surface area, porous structure, multiple iron-based active sites and N- and S-doped C. Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) achieves outstanding ORR performances, including a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.844 V and 0.715 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M HClO4 solution, respectively. In addition, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) shows an outstanding Zn–air battery performance with an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.450 V and a peak power density of 121.9 mW cm−2, which is higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C. As a result, the as-prepared electrocatalyst in this work shows the development of the Zn-assisted strategy combined with the assembly of porphyrins as NNMEs for the enhancement of the ORR in both alkaline and acidic solutions.

BackgroundPatients with glioma present with complex palliative care needs throughout their disease trajectory. A scientometric analysis is effective and widely used to summarize the most influential studies within a certain field. We present the first scientometric analysis of palliative care for patients with glioma.MethodsBased on a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) principle, we conducted a generalized search for articles on palliative care for glioma in the Web of Science database and evaluated the top 100 most frequently cited articles among 2,542 articles.ResultsThe number of citations for the top 100 cited articles on palliative care for glioma ranged from 10 to 223. We have a narrative conclusion, as follows: most of these articles were published in oncology-specific journals (n = 53) and palliative-specific journals (n = 22). The United States, Australia, and the Netherlands were the top three countries contributing most of the articles (n = 59). Most of the research methods were quantitative analyses, qualitative analyses, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses (n = 70). In quantitative studies, 66 scales were used, and the top three scales used included the following: the Distress Thermometer, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Brain Index (FACT-Br), and Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS). The articles were classified into six major categories based on research subjects, including patients (n = 44), caregivers (n = 16), patients and caregivers (n = 20), literature (n = 19), and healthcare providers (n = 1). Articles were classified into seven major categories based on research themes: quality of life (n = 11); end-of-life symptoms and care (n = 16); palliative and supportive care needs (n = 35); advance care planning and decision making (n = 4); psychological, social, and spiritual needs (n = 12); hospice utilization and referral (n = 3); and others (n = 19). The studies of the primary topic are correlated with the number of citations.ConclusionsThe results of the analysis indicated that patients diagnosed with glioma present a high variety of palliative care needs, including physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. The caregiver’s burden and needs are important as well. The proportion of quantitative analyses, qualitative analyses, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses is relatively high, but the number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was low. End-of-life care and supportive care needs appeared frequently. Thus, palliative care is an urgent need to be addressed in glioma management. The appropriate scales should be selected for patients with glioma and meet their palliative needs.

Abstract Background The clinical and virological course of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are lacking. We aimed to describe the clinical and virological characteristics of COVID-19 patients from 10 designated hospitals in 10 cities of Jiangsu province, China. The factors associated with the clearance of SARS-CoV-2 were investigated. Methods A total of 328 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were retrospectively recruited. The epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, radiology and treatment data were collected. The associated factors of SARS-CoV-2 clearance were analyzed. Results The median duration of hospitalization was 16.0 days (interquartile range [IQR] 13.0–21.0 days). On multivariate Cox regression analysis, age > 60 years (hazard ratio [HR] 0.643, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.454–0.911, P = 0.013) was associated with the delayed SARS-CoV-2 clearance, while the atomized inhalation of interferon α-2b could improve the clearance of SARS-CoV-2 (HR, 1.357, 95% CI 1.050–1.755, P = 0.020). Twenty-six (7.9%) patients developed respiratory failure and 4 (1.2%) patients developed ARDS. Twenty (6.1%) patients were admitted to the ICU, while no patient was deceased. Conclusions Our study found that age > 60 years was associated with the delayed SARS-CoV-2 clearance, while treated with atomized inhalation of interferon α-2b could promote the clearance of SARS-CoV-2.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate the impact of stress-sensitive permeability on productivity in naturally fracture carbonate reservoirs. First, stress sensitivity evaluation experiments were conducted on artificial cores with matrix, uncemented fracture, partially- cemented fracture and fully-cemented fracture by measuring their permeability in the process of increasing confining pressure. Then, a new mathematical model for productivity prediction in naturally fractured carbonate reservoir with consideration of stress-sensitive permeability is developed. Comparisons have been made between the new model prediction results and field measured data to verify the accuracy of the new model. Finally, based on the validated model, the detailed impact of permeability modulus on productivity is analysed. The experiment results show that the strength of stress sensitivity, evaluated by permeability modulus, of cores with uncemented fracture and partially-cemented fracture is generally an order of magnitude larger than that of cores with matrix and fully-cemented fracture. The results show the new model can be simplified to the classic model (Vogel equation) under the condition of the stress sensitivity being not taken into account, which means the class model is corresponding to a special case of this new model. Field application shows that the new model is reliable and correct. Moreover, with the help of the new model, it is found that the impact of stress-sensitive permeability on productivity increases with increasing permeability modulus and decreasing flow bottom hole pressure.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide; however, the successful treatment of BC, especially triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), remains a significant clinical challenge. Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT), which involves the generation of heat under irradiation to achieve photothermal ablation of BC with minimal invasiveness and outstanding spatial–temporal selectivity, has been demonstrated as a novel therapy that can overcome the drawbacks of chemotherapy or surgery. Significantly, when combining PTT with chemotherapy and/or photodynamic therapy, an enhanced synergistic therapeutic effect can be achieved in both primary and metastatic BC tumors. Thus, this review discusses the recent developments in nanotechnology-based photothermal therapy for the treatment of BC and its metastasis to provide potential strategies for future BC treatment.

Irreversible sensorineural hearing loss is one of the most common side effects after cisplatin treatment. Prevention and reversal of hearing loss caused by cisplatin are of great importance for cancer patients, especially children. Oxidative stress is an important cause of hearing loss resulted from cisplatin, unfortunately, there is no drug yet available that can completely prevent and reverse the ototoxicity from cisplatin. Polydatin (PD) possesses excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, however, its role in the cisplatin-induced hearing loss has not been investigated. Herein, we have explored the preventive and therapeutic effects of PD on cisplatin-induced hearing loss and the possible underlying mechanisms. In the in vivo setting with guinea pigs, we have demonstrated that PD can reduce the threshold shift of auditory brainstem response (ABR) caused by cisplatin, promote the nuclear translocation of Nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), increase the expression of Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and thus reduce the loss of outer hair cells (OHCs). PD can ameliorate cisplatin-induced hearing loss through activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. This study provides a potential strategy for preventing and improving hearing loss resulted from cisplatin treatment in clinics.

In order to find the low-alloy high-strength steel welded with the strongest corrosion resistance, the corrosion resistance of HSAL weld metal was studied by considering different alloy compositions. Corrosion resistance of alloy compositions of 460, 690, and 980 MPa was analyzed in an atmospheric environment and simulated seawater environment, respectively. The results of the corrosion weight gain test, weight loss test, and Kelvin probe test showed that the HSAL weld metal with 980 MPa alloy composition has the best corrosion resistance in an atmospheric environment. Through seawater immersion and electrochemical testing, it was found that the HSAL weld metal with 980 MPa alloy composition had good corrosion resistance in a simulated seawater environment, the HSAL with 690 MPa alloy composition had medium corrosion resistance, and the HSAL with 460 MPa alloy composition had the lowest corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of the weld zone is the best and that of the heat-affected zone is the worst; these findings may be helpful for research in related fields.

In recent years, obesity has been widely considered an independent risk factor for diseases/disorders including inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Adipocytes separate in diverse types of tissues, playing vital roles in not only homeostasis but also disease progression. Adipose tissue is not only an energy organ but is also an endocrine organ that can communicate with other cells in the microenvironment. In this review, we assess the functions of breast cancer-associated adipose tissue-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the progression of breast cancer including proliferation, metastasis, drug resistance, and immune regulation. A better understanding of the role of EVs in the crosstalk between adipocytes and breast cancer will provide an understanding of the cancer biology and progression, which would further drive improvements of diagnostic strategies as well as therapeutic insights.

Accurate wind power forecasting is an important factor in ensuring the stable operation of a power system. In this paper, we propose a wind power forecasting method based on feature analysis and error correction in order to further improve its accuracy. Firstly, the correlation analysis is carried out on the features using the maximal information coefficient (MIC), and the main features are selected as the model input items. Then, the two primary factors affecting wind power forecasting—the wind speed and wind direction provided by numerical weather prediction (NWP)—are analyzed, and the data are divided and clustered from the above two perspectives. Next, the bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM) is used to predict the power of each group of sub data. Finally, the error is forecasted by a light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) in order to correct the prediction results. The calculation example shows that the proposed method achieves the expected purpose and improves the accuracy of forecasting effectively.

Carbon capture has been an important topic of the twenty-first century because of the elevating carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere. CO2 in the atmosphere is above 420 parts per million (ppm) as of 2022, 70 ppm higher than 50 years ago. Carbon capture research and development has mostly been centered around higher concentration flue gas streams. For example, flue gas streams from steel and cement industries have been largely ignored due to lower associated CO2 concentrations and higher capture and processing costs. Capture technologies such as solvent-based, adsorption-based, cryogenic distillation, and pressure-swing adsorption are under research, but many suffer from higher costs and life cycle impacts. Membrane-based capture processes are considered cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives. Over the past three decades, our research group at Idaho National Laboratory has led the development of several polyphosphazene polymer chemistries and has demonstrated their selectivity for CO2 over nitrogen (N2). Poly[bis((2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)phosphazene] (MEEP) has shown the highest selectivity. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to determine the life cycle feasibility of the MEEP polymer material compared to other CO2-selective membranes and separation processes. The MEEP-based membrane processes emit at least 42% less equivalent CO2 than Pebax-based membrane processes. Similarly, MEEP-based membrane processes produce 34–72% less CO2 than conventional separation processes. In all studied categories, MEEP-based membranes report lower emissions than Pebax-based membranes and conventional separation processes.

In this study, the preparation of covalent polyoxometalate organic frameworks (CPOFs) is introduced using the idea of polyoxometalate and covalent organic frameworks. Firstly, the prepared polyoxometalate was functionalized with an amine group (NH2-POM-NH2), and then the CPOFs were prepared by a solvothermal Schiff base reaction with NH2-POM-NH2 and 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Tp) as monomers. After the incorporation of PtNPs and MWCNTs into the CPOFs material, the PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNTs nanocomposites, which possess excellent catalytic activity and electrical conductivity, were formed and utilized as new electrode materials for the electrochemical thymol sensors. The obtained PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNTs composite exhibits excellent activity toward thymol, which is attributable to its large special surface area, good conductivity and the synergistic catalysis of each component. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor presented a good electrochemical response to thymol. The sensor shows two good linear relationships between the current and thymol concentration in the range of 2–65 μM (R2 = 0.996) and 65–810 μM (R2 = 0.997), with the corresponding sensitivity of 72.7 μA mM−1 and 30.5 μA mM−1, respectively. Additionally, the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.2 μM (S/N = 3). At the same time, the prepared thymol electrochemical sensor revealed superior stability and selectivity. The constructed PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNT electrochemical sensor is the first example of thymol detection.

The electrolytic reduction of TiO2 in LiCl–Li2O (1 wt.%) at 650 °C was investigated under a series of cathodic reduction potentials and applied charges to provide a mechanistic understanding of the electrochemical characteristics of the system. The optimal cathodic reduction potential was determined as being −0.3 V vs. Li/Li+. Li2TiO3 and LiTiO2 were structurally identified as intermediate and partial reduction products of the TiO2 electrolytic reduction. The reduction of LiTiO2 was extremely slow and reversible due to its high stability and the detrimental effect of Li2O accumulation within the solid particles. The most reduced product obtained in this study was LiTiO2, which was achieved when using 150% of the theoretical charge under the optimal reduction potential. The highest reduction extent obtained in this study was 25%. Based on theoretical DFT modeling, a detailed multistep reduction mechanism and scheme were proposed for TiO2 electrolytic reduction in LiCl–Li2O (1 wt.%) at 650 °C.

Grain length (GL) directly affects the yield and quality of rice. Very few cloned GL-related genes are applied in production because their yield-increasing effects are not obvious, and the overall regulatory networks underlying the associated processes remain poorly understood. DNA samples from two bulk DNA pools (L-pool and S-pool) and their parents (KJ01 and Huaye 3) were subjected to high-throughput sequencing. Using bulked segregant analysis (BSA), qGL3.5 was mapped to a 0.34-Mb “hotspot” region on chromosome 3 that contains 37 genes related to various traits. Then, qGL3.5 was mapped to the genomic interval between the flanking markers M2 and M3 using 2786 BC4F2 individuals. Because the region from B5 to B6 was not the associated region under BSA-seq analysis, qGL3.5 was narrowed down to the interval between B6 and M3, which spanned 24.0-kb. Of all 37 genes with non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between KJ01 and Huaye 3 based on BSA-seq analysis, only one complete annotated gene, ORF18 (Gene ID: LOC_Os03g42790.1) was found. ORF18 encodes an IBR-RING zinc-finger-related protein, with one really interesting new gene (RING) and two in between ring finger (IBR) domains. The knockout of ORF18 derived from Huaye 3 using clustered, regularly interspaced, short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated 9 (Cas9) editing technology increased the GL of the mutant by approximately 2.2 mm. The novel locus qGL3.5 negatively regulated GL by promoting elongation of the longitudinal cell of the grain outer glume. These results provide a new genetic resource for rice grain shape breeding and a starting point for the functional characterization of the wild rice GL gene.
