Abstract

To be able to detect explosives ultra-traces has become a societal need particularly to anticipate terrorist attacks. During the last decade, despite wellstudied heavy analytical techniques, more sensitive and portable new gas-chemosensors have been developed. The sensor principle is based on a sensitive material interacting with the gaseous analyte. These interactions can induce a variation of the intrinsic properties of the material. For example, it can be fluorescence quenching easily identified with a spectrofluorimeter. In this paper, several organic materials have been identified as promising fluorescent explosives sensors and especially as nitroaromatic sensors. These sensors materials are polymers which backbone is a regularly alternated linking of π-conjugated segments (called fluorophores) and chiral units

Abstract

Abstract: A numerical model has been developed to predict the sensitivity of QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance) sensors. Such device is coated with a spray-deposited polymer, which has a specific affinity for a given family of molecules: here, nitro aromatic compounds are the target as they are key compounds for explosives trace detection in gas phase. The model is tested by a set of initial measurements performed on several target and interfering molecules. Physico- chemical characterizations are used to validate the model assumptions. The main goal of our approach is twofold: (i) to improve the choice of sensing material for chemical sensor development with a small number of experimental detection tests and (ii) to predict the response of a given material to other analytes. Abstract

Fluorescent chemical sensors have been widely exploited for the detection and quantification of trace explosives. Their performances are mainly dependent on the sensitive material. Fluorescent organic materials are very efficient in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and response time but their degradation is a major drawback. Sol-gel materials offer a much longer life span, especially in the case of inorganic sensitive coatings. The elaboration of sol-gel sensitive films is detailed in this paper. Two examples of sol-gel fluorescent sensitive materials are presented: a hybrid organic-inorganic film and an inorganic material.

Abstract

Functionalized silica-based thin films, modified with hydrophobic groups, were synthesized and used as sensors for nitroaromatic compound (NAC) specific detection. Their performance and behavior, in terms of stability, ageing and regeneration, have been fully characterized by combining chemical characterization techniques and electron microscopy. NAC was efficiently and specifically detected using these silica-based sensors, but showed a great degradation in the presence of humidity. Moreover, the sensor sensitivity seriously decreases with storage time. Methyl- and phenyl-functionalization helped to overcome this humidity sensitivity. Surface characterization enabled us to establish a direct correlation between the appearance, and increasing amount, of adsorbed carbonyl-containing species, and sensor efficiency. This contamination, appearing after only one month, was particularly important when sensors were stored in plastic containers. Rinsing with cyclohexane enables us to recover part of the sensor performance but does not yield a complete regeneration of the sensors. This work led us to the definition of optimized elaboration and storage conditions for nitroaromatic sensors.

26. Comparison of fluorescence and QCM technologies: example of explosives detection with a pi-conjugated thin film.

Abstract

A pi-conjugated compound was synthesized as a sensitive material for explosives detection. The detection of vapors of 2,4-dinitrotoluene was demonstrated with quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and fluorescence transduction methods. The fluorescence intensity monitoring shows a higher sensitivity and selectivity than the monitoring of the QCM frequency. Both methods appear to be synergic when used simultaneously as the sensor helps to discriminate interferent vapors from nitroaromatics., (Copyright (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)
