Hair is good bioindicator of exposure, due to its ability to store and retain trace elements for long periods of time. But it can be especially useful when hair dyes are used since they may contain potentially toxic salts in their composition. In this context, analytical methods for the determination of bismuth, cadmium, lead, and silver in scalp human hair by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry were successfully validated. A total of 60 samples obtained from women between 18 and 60 years were analyzed: 34 dyed hairs and 26 untreated hairs (control). Average results expressed in dry weight (dyed/control) for each element were 2.34/0.49 μg g−1 (silver), 0.142/0.139 μg g−1 (bismuth), 0.055/0.054 μg g−1 (cadmium), and 2.09/0.99 μg g−1 (lead), respectively. These results agreed with those previously reported for non-exposed populations. A statistically significant higher Ag concentration in dyed hairs was observed, suggesting the bioaccumulation of this element. The associations between metal concentration and variables of interest (age, education, smoking habit, dye brand, use of dietary supplements) were investigated. A strong Pearson correlation was found for the pair Ag/Pb (r = 0.494, p < 0.05). Also, strong associations between lead levels and all the selected variables were observed (p < 0.05), while strong associations between silver levels with age and dye brand and association between cadmium levels and smoking habit were found. Furthermore, several commercial hair dye brands were analyzed to verify compliance with cosmetic regulations. This review reports a discussion involving sources, adverse effects, and quantification of emerging contaminants that have polluted the environment, such as chemical elements employed in medicine (antimony, barium, and gadolinium), microplastics in water bodies, in addition to pharmaceutical, illicit drugs, and their metabolites in wastewater and sewage sludge. It also addresses the pollution caused by emerging contaminants in urban areas, such as gas stations and hairdressing salons. Hair dyes are now commonly used in Saudi Arabia, and other nations across the world, to cover up grey hairs and/or to modify the natural color of the hair. The principal ingredients of hair dyes are aromatic amines and phenols and which most likely cause allergic reactions, irritated skin, and even cancer in certain cases. Thus, the current study reports the separation and subsequent identification of four chemical constituents namely p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), 3-aminophenol (3AP), resorcinol (RES), and 2-methylresorcinol (2MRS) in 26 commercial hair dyes that represent ten famous brands available in the local market of Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique was successfully employed to identify the four chemical compounds using methanol-aqueous solution (10:90 v/v) containing diethanolamine (0.05 %) and ammonium acetate (0.02 M) at pH 5.2 as a proper mobile phase. The column was 150 × 4.6 mm ID and 5 µm Eclipse Plus C18 column and the retention times were 1.26, 3.16, 4.99 and 6.01 min for PPD, 3AP, RES, and 2MRS, respectively. The four standards PPD, 3AP, RES, and 2MRS at 254 nm displayed excellent linear calibration plots in the concentration range 5–100 µg/mL with acceptable correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.9964, 0.9980, 0.9952 and 0.9961, respectively. The low limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) based on the standard deviation of the response and the slopes of the plots were found to be equal 7.17, 5.39, 8.33, and 7.47 µg/mL and 23.91, 17.97, 27.75, 24.89 µg/mL for PPD, 3AP, RES, and 2MRS, respectively.

Abstract The discovery of clandestine burials poses unique challenges for forensic specialists, requiring diverse expertise to analyze remains in various states. Bones, teeth, and hair often endure the test of time, with hair particularly exposed to the external environment. While existing studies focus on the degradation of virgin hair influenced by soil pH and decomposition fluids, the interaction between artificial dyes on hair and soil remains underexplored. This paper introduces a novel approach to forensic hair analysis that is based on high-throughput, nondestructive, and non-invasive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and machine learning. Using this approach, we investigated the reliability of the detection and identification of artificial dyes on hair buried in three distinct soil types for up to eight weeks. Our results demonstrated that SERS enabled the correct prediction of 97.9% of spectra for five out of the eight dyes used within the 8 weeks of exposure. We also investigated the extent to which SERS and machine learning can be used to predict the number of weeks since burial, as this information may provide valuable insights into post-mortem intervals. We found that SERS enabled highly accurate exposure intervals to soils for specific dyes. The study underscores the high achievability of SERS in extrapolating colorant information from dyed hairs buried in diverse soils, with the suggestion that further model refinement could enhance its reliability in forensic applications.

• Current evidence regarding personal hair product use and gynecological conditions is insufficient to conclude whether a positive association exists. • Comprehensive exposure assessment and risk analysis are needed to evaluate the role of hair products and gynecological conditions. Hair products often contain chemicals like para -phenylenediamine (PPD) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs); giving rise to concerns about the possible adverse effects such as hormonal disturbances and carcinogenicity. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the association between the use of different hair products and benign and malignant gynecological conditions. Studies were identified from three databases including PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, and evaluated in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A total of 17 English-language studies met the inclusion criteria. Associations of hair relaxer or hair dye use with breast and ovarian cancer were observed in at least one well-designed study, but these findings were not consistent across studies. Further sub-analysis showed 1.08 times (95 % CI: 1.01–1.15) increased risk of breast cancer in females with permanent hair dye use. Chang et al. reported strong association between uterine cancer risk and hair relaxer use (HR 1.8, 95 % CI: 1.12–2.88), with no observed association with hair dye use. Studies conducted by Wise et al. and James-Todd et al. for benign gynecological conditions; including uterine leiomyoma (IRR 1.17, 95 % CI: 1.06–1.30), early onset of menarche (RR 1.4, 95 % CI: 1.1–1.9), and decreased fecundability (FR 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.81–0.98) revealed positive associations with hair relaxer use, but these findings were based on small sample sizes. In summary, the available evidence regarding personal use of hair products and gynecological conditions is insufficient to determine whether a positive association exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Difficulties in the localization of bodies of homicidal or drowning victims in natural water result in their submergence for weeks if not months. Water insects and microbes drastically change the body's appearance, which significantly changes the determination of a victim's identity. DNA analysis is commonly used for identifying the decedent; however, this PCR‐based approach is time‐consuming and destructive of the evidence. Considering that nearly half of the people in the world dye their hair with a variety of permanent and semi‐permanent dyes, one can expect that confirmatory identification of dyes on the body's hair can be used to shed light on the victim's identity. A growing body of evidence suggests that surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can be used to detect and identify hair dyes. In this study, we investigated the extent to which SERS could be used to detect black and blue, permanent and semi‐permanent dyes on hair submerged in hypolimnion water for up to twelve weeks. We found that SERS enabled 100% accurate identification of analyzed dyes on hair submerged in hypolimnion water for up to 8 weeks, whereas, on average, 87% accurate identification of the hair dyes could be achieved on hair exposed for 10 weeks and 50% for hair exposed 12 weeks in hypolimnion water. We also found that the aqueous environment caused progressive fading of some dyes, whereas other dyes showed substantial spectral transformations after prolonged submergence. Finally, we found that changes in the intensity of vibrational bands of dyes could be used to predict the duration of submergence of colored hair in hypolimnion water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary cutaneous marginal zone lymphoma (PCMZL) is a rare form of B-cell lymphoma that primarily affects the skin. Chronic antigen stimulation has been implicated in its development, with cases associated with various triggers. We present a case of PCMZL following chronic inflammation caused by long-term hair dyeing. A 75-year-old woman with a history of repeated inflammation and itching after hair dyeing for 30 years presented with persistent red-to-violaceous patches and plaques on her scalp. Despite receiving topical corticosteroid treatment for 10 years, the lesions remained. Pathological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of PCMZL. The patient achieved complete remission after radiotherapy. This case underscores the potential link between chronic inflammation and the development of PCMZL.

Cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs) are a few of the most commonly used products across the globe with a whopping market share of approximately USD 500 billion. These products are used for cleansing purposes and for improving the quality and beauty of the face, hair, and skin. There are many chemical substances involved in the manufacturing of cosmetics and PCPs. These chemical substances incorporated in cosmetics or PCPs are crucial to develop high-quality products with superior appearance, applicability, and stability; however, excessive use of such chemicals in cosmetics and PCPs has become a safety concern as many of these are reported to cause severe health complications. Overuse of cosmetics and PCPs with hazardous material should be minimized, especially by pregnant women and children. Gynecologists advise pregnant women not to use cosmetics and PCPs with hazardous chemicals. The implementation of a lawful framework is crucial to establish the safety of cosmetics and PCPs. Cosmetic companies/industries must be strictly regulated and made compliant to the guidelines in order to protect human health and minimize safety concerns. In this review, hazardous chemicals incorporated in the personal care products/cosmetics and their related risk and health complications have been discussed in detail. Additionally, regulatory status and clinical trials of chemical substances that involve toxicity and causing severe complications have also been discussed.
