Search

Tailoring nanoparticles composition and morphology is of particular interest for improving their performance for catalysis. A challenge of this approach is that the nanoparticles optimized initial structure often changes during use. Visualizing the three dimensional (3D) structural transformation in situ is therefore critical, but often prohibitively difficult experimentally. Although electron tomography provides opportunities for 3D imaging, restrictions in the tilt range of in situ holders together with electron dose considerations limit the possibilities for in situ electron tomography studies. Here, we present an in situ 3D imaging methodology using single particle reconstruction (SPR) that allows 3D reconstruction of nanoparticles with controlled electron dose and without tilting the microscope stage. This in situ SPR methodology was employed to investigate the restructuring and elemental redistribution within a population of PtNi nanoparticles at elevated temperatures. We further examined the atomic structure of PtNi and found a heat induced transition from a disordered to an ordered phase. Changes in structure and elemental distribution were linked to a loss of catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction. The in situ SPR methodology employed here could be extended to a wide range of in situ studies employing not only heating, but gaseous, aqueous or electrochemical environments to reveal in operando nanoparticle evolution in 3D.

Layer-by-layer assembly of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures underpins new discoveries in solid state physics, material science and chemistry. Despite the successes, all current 2D material (2DM) transfer techniques rely on the use of polymers which limit the cleanliness, ultimate electronic performance, and potential for optoelectronic applications of the heterostructures. In this article, we present a novel polymer-free platform for rapid and facile heterostructure assembly which utilises re-usable flexible silicon nitride membranes. We demonstrate that this allows fast and reproducible production of 2D heterostructures using both exfoliated and CVD-grown materials with perfect interfaces free from interlayer contamination and correspondingly excellent electronic behaviour, limited only by the size and intrinsic quality of the crystals used. Furthermore, removing the need for polymeric carriers allows new possibilities for vdW heterostructure fabrication: assembly at high temperatures up to 600{\deg}C, and in different environments including ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and when the materials are fully submerged in liquids. We demonstrate UHV heterostructure assembly for the first time, and show the reliable creation of graphene moir\'e superlattices with more than an order of magnitude improvement in their structural homogeneity. We believe that broad adaptation of our novel inorganic 2D materials assembly strategy will allow realisation of the full potential of vdW heterostructures as a platform for new physics and advanced optoelectronic technologies., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

Solid-state spin qubits within silicon crystals at mK temperatures show great promise in the realisation of a fully scalable quantum computation platform. Qubit coherence times are limited in natural silicon owing to coupling to the isotope ${ }^{29} \mathrm{Si}$ which has a non-zero nuclear spin. This work presents a method for the depletion of ${ }^{29} \mathrm{Si}$ in localised volumes of natural silicon wafers by irradiation using a 45 keV ${ }^{28} \mathrm{Si}$ focused ion beam with fluences above $1 \times 10^{19} \, \mathrm{ions} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis of the irradiated volumes shows unprecedented quality enriched silicon that reaches a minimal residual ${ }^{29} \mathrm{Si}$ value of 2.3 $\pm$ 0.7 ppm and with residual C and O comparable to the background concentration in the unimplanted wafer. Transmission electron microscopy lattice images confirm the solid phase epitaxial re-crystallization of the as-implanted amorphous enriched volume extending over 200 nm in depth upon annealing. The ease of fabrication, requiring only commercially available natural silicon wafers and ion sources, opens the possibility for co-integration of qubits in localised highly enriched volumes with control circuitry in the surrounding natural silicon for large-scale devices., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Engineering the structure of core-shell colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles (CSNPs) is attractive due to the potential to enhance photo-induced charge transfer (PICT) and induce favourable optical and electronic properties. Nonetheless, the sensitivity of telluride CSNPs to high temperatures makes it challenging to precisely modulate their surface crystallinity. Herein, we have developed an efficient strategy for synthesising telluride CSNPs with thin amorphous shells using aqueous cation exchange (ACE). By changing the synthesis temperature in the range 40 to 110C, the crystallinity of the CdTe nanoparticles was controllable from perfect crystals with no detectable amorphous shell (c-CdTe) to a core-shell structure with a crystalline CdTe NP core covered by an amorphous shell of tunable thickness up to 7-8nm (c@a-CdTe) . A second ACE step transformed the c@a-CdTe to crystalline CdTe@HgTe core-shell NPs. The c@a-CdTe nanoparticles synthesized at 60C and having a 4-5 nm thick amorphous shell, exhibited the highest surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity with a high enhancement factor around 8.82x10^5, attributed to the coupling between the amorphous shell and the crystalline core., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, plus supplementary information

The chemical behaviour of single metal atoms largely depends on the local coordination environment, including interactions with the substrate and with the surrounding gas or liquid. However, the key instrumentation for studying such systems at the atomic scale generally requires high vacuum conditions, limiting the degree to which the aforementioned environmental parameters can be investigated. Here we develop a new platform for transmission electron microscopy investigation of single metal atoms in liquids and study the dynamic behaviour of individual platinum atoms on the surface of a single layer MoS2 crystal in water. To achieve the record single atom resolution, we introduce a double liquid cell based on a 2D material heterostructure, which allows us to submerge an atomically thin membrane with liquid on both sides while maintaining the total specimen thickness of only ~ 70 nm. By comparison with an identical specimen imaged under high vacuum conditions, we reveal drastic differences in the single atom resting sites and atomic hopping behaviour, demonstrating that in situ imaging conditions are essential to gain complete understanding of the chemical activity of individual atoms. Spiky/hollow metal nanoparticles have applications across a broad range of fields. However, current bottom-up methods to produce spiky/hollow metal nanoparticles rely heavily on the use of strongly adsorbing surfactant molecules, which is undesirable since these passivate the product particle surfaces. Here we report a high-yield surfactant-free synthesis of spiky hollow Au-Ag nanostars (SHAANs). Each SHAAN is composed of more than 50 spikes attached to a hollow ca. 150 nm diameter cubic core, which makes SHAANs highly plasmonically and catalytically active. Moreover, the surfaces of SHAANs are chemically exposed which gives them significantly enhanced functionality compared to their surfactant-capped counterparts, as demonstrated in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and catalysis. The chemical accessibility of the pristine SHAANs also allows the use of hydroxyethyl cellulose as a weakly-bound stabilizing agent. This produces colloidal SHAANs which remain stable for more than 1 month while retaining the functionalities of the pristine particles and allow even single-particle SERS to be realized., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, supplementary information

Nitrogen doping of the carbon is an important method to improve the performance and durability of catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells by platinum-nitrogen and carbon-nitrogen bonds. This study shows that p-phenyl groups and graphitic N acting bridges linking platinum and the graphene/carbon black (the ratio graphene/carbon black=2/3) hybrid support materials achieved the average size of platinum nanoparticles with (4.88 +/- 1.79) nm. It improved the performance of the lower-temperature hydrogen fuel cell up to 0.934 W cm-2 at 0.60 V, which is 1.55 times greater than that of commercial Pt/C. Doping also enhanced the interaction between Pt and the support materials, and the resistance to corrosion, thus improving the durability of the low-temperature hydrogen fuel cell with a much lower decay of 10 mV at 0.80 A cm-2 after 30k cycles of an in-situ accelerated stress test of catalyst degradation than that of 92 mV in Pt/C, which achieves the target of Department of Energy (<30 mV). Meanwhile, Pt/NrEGO2-CB3 remains 78% of initial power density at 1.5 A cm-2 after 5k cycles of in-situ accelerated stress test of carbon corrosion, which is more stable than the power density of commercial Pt/C, keeping only 54% after accelerated stress test., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures and supplementary information

We report a rapid solution-phase strategy to synthesize alloyed PtNi nanoparticles which demonstrate outstanding functionality for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This one-pot co-reduction colloidal synthesis results in a monodisperse population of single-crystal nanoparticles of rhombic dodecahedral morphology, with Pt enriched edges and compositions close to Pt1Ni2. We use nanoscale 3D compositional analysis to reveal for the first time that oleylamine (OAm)-aging of the rhombic dodecahedral Pt1Ni2 particles results in Ni leaching from surface facets, producing aged particles with concave faceting, an exceptionally high surface area and a composition of Pt2Ni1. We show that the modified atomic nanostructures catalytically outperform the original PtNi rhombic dodecahedral particles by more than 2-fold and also yield improved cycling durability. Their functionality for the ORR far exceeds commercially available Pt/C nanoparticle electrocatalysts, both in terms of mass-specific activities (up to a 25-fold increase) and intrinsic area-specific activities (up to a 27-fold increase)., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information

Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals offer almost unlimited scope for the design of novel metamaterials. Here we demonstrate a room-temperature ferroelectric semiconductor that is assembled using mono- or few- layer MoS2. These van der Waals heterostructures feature broken inversion symmetry, which, together with the asymmetry of atomic arrangement at the interface of two 2D crystals, enables ferroelectric domains with alternating out-of-plane polarisation arranged into a twist-controlled network. The latter can be moved by applying out-of-plane electrical fields, as visualized in situ using channelling contrast electron microscopy. The interfacial charge transfer for the observed ferroelectric domains is quantified using Kelvin probe force microscopy and agrees well with theoretical calculations. The movement of domain walls and their bending rigidity also agrees well with our modelling results. Furthermore, we demonstrate proof-of-principle field-effect transistors, where the channel resistance exhibits a pronounced hysteresis governed by pinning of ferroelectric domain walls. Clays and micas are receiving attention as materials that, in their atomically thin form, could allow for novel proton conductive, ion selective, osmotic power generation, or solvent filtration membranes. The interest arises from the possibility of controlling their properties by exchanging ions in the crystal lattice. However, the ion exchange process itself remains largely unexplored in atomically thin materials. Here we use atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to study the dynamics of the process and reveal the binding sites of individual ions in atomically thin and artificially restacked clays and micas. Imaging ion exchange after different exposure time and for different crystal thicknesses, we find that the ion diffusion constant, D, for the interlayer space of atomically thin samples is up to 10^4 times larger than in bulk crystals and approaches its value in free water. Surprisingly, samples where no bulk exchange is expected display fast exchange if the mica layers are twisted and restacked; but in this case, the exchanged ions arrange in islands controlled by the moir\'e superlattice dimensions. We attribute the fast ion diffusion to enhanced interlayer expandability resulting from weaker interlayer binding forces in both atomically thin and restacked materials. Finally, we demonstrate images of individual surface cations for these materials, which had remained elusive in previous studies. Renewed interest in Very Low Earth Orbits (VLEO) - i.e. altitudes below 450 km - has led to an increased demand for accurate environment characterisation and aerodynamic force prediction. While the former requires knowledge of the mechanisms that drive density variations in the thermosphere, the latter also depends on the interactions between the gas-particles in the residual atmosphere and the surfaces exposed to the flow. The determination of the aerodynamic coefficients is hindered by the numerous uncertainties that characterise the physical processes occurring at the exposed surfaces. Several models have been produced over the last 60 years with the intent of combining accuracy with relatively simple implementations. In this paper the most popular models have been selected and reviewed using as discriminating factors relevance with regards to orbital aerodynamics applications and theoretical agreement with gas-beam experimental data. More sophisticated models were neglected, since their increased accuracy is generally accompanied by a substantial increase in computation times which is likely to be unsuitable for most space engineering applications. For the sake of clarity, a distinction was introduced between physical and scattering kernel theory based gas-surface interaction models. The physical model category comprises the Hard Cube model, the Soft Cube model and the Washboard model, while the scattering kernel family consists of the Maxwell model, the Nocilla-Hurlbut-Sherman model and the Cercignani-Lampis-Lord model. Limits and assets of each model have been discussed with regards to the context of this paper. Suspended specimens of 2D crystals and their heterostructures are required for a range of studies including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical transmission experiments and nanomechanical testing. However, investigating the properties of laterally small 2D crystal specimens, including twisted bilayers and air sensitive materials, has been held back by the difficulty of fabricating the necessary clean suspended samples. Here we present a scalable solution which allows clean free-standing specimens to be realized with 100% yield by dry-stamping atomically thin 2D stacks onto a specially developed adhesion-enhanced support grid. The convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns of twisted bilayer samples exhibit interference patterns in their CBED spots. Such interference patterns can be treated as off-axis holograms and the phase of the scattered waves, meaning the interlayer distance can be reconstructed. A detailed protocol of the reconstruction procedure is provided in this study. In addition, we derive an exact formula for reconstructing the interlayer distance from the recovered phase distribution, which takes into account the different chemical compositions of the individual monolayers. It is shown that one interference fringe in a CBED spot is sufficient to reconstruct the distance between the layers, which can be practical for imaging samples with a relatively small twist angle or when probing small sample regions. The quality of the reconstructed interlayer distance is studied as a function of the twist angle. At smaller twist angles, the reconstructed interlayer distance distribution is more precise and artefact free. At larger twist angles, artefacts due to the moir\'e structure appear in the reconstruction. A method for the reconstruction of the average interlayer distance is presented. As for resolution, the interlayer distance can be reconstructed by the holographic approach at an accuracy of 0.5 A, which is a few hundred times better than the intrinsic z-resolution of diffraction limited resolution, as expressed through the spread of the measured k-values. Moreover, we show that holographic CBED imaging can detect variations as small as 0.1 A in the interlayer distance, though the quantitative reconstruction of such variations suffers from large errors.

The strain dependent functional properties of epitaxial transition metal oxide films can be significantly modified via substrate selection. However, large lattice mismatches preclude dislocation-free epitaxial growth on ferroelectric substrates, whose strain states are modified by applied electric fields. Here we overcome this mismatch problem by depositing an epitaxial film of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on a single crystal substrate of well lattice matched SrTiO3 via a film of SrRuO3 that we subsequently dissolved, permitting the transfer of unstrained La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 to a ferroelectric substrate of 0.68Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 0.32PbTiO3 in a different crystallographic orientation. Ferroelectric domain switching, and a concomitant ferroelectric phase transition, produced large non volatile changes of magnetization that were mediated by magnetic domain rotations at locations defined by the microstructure - as revealed via high resolution vector maps of magnetization constructed from photoemission electron microscopy data, with contrast from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In future, our method may be exploited to control functional properties in dislocation free epitaxial films of any composition.

In this work, the room temperature polar vapor sensing behavior of two dimentional (2D) heterojunction Graphene-TiS3 materials and TiS3 nanoribbons is investigated. TiS3 nanoribbons were synthesized via chemical vapor transport (CVT) and their structure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X- ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. The gas sensing performance of the TiS3 nanoribbons was assessed through the observed changes in their electronic behavior. Sensing devices were fabricated with gold contacts and with lithographically patterned graphene (Gr) electrodes in a 2D heterojunction Gr-TiS3-Gr architecture.. It is observed that the gold contacted TiS3 device has a rather linear I-V behavior while the Gr-TiS3-Gr heterojunction forms a contact with a higher Schottky barrier (250 meV). I-V responses of the sensors were recorded at room temperature with a relative humidity of 55% and for different ethanol vapor concentrations (varying from 2 to 20 ppm). I-V plots indicated an increase in the resistance of Gr-TiS3-Gr by the adsorption of water and ethanol molecules with relatively high sensing response (~3353% at 2 ppm). Our results reveal that selective and stable responses to a low concentration of ethanol vapor (2 ppm) can be achieved at room temperature with transient response and recovery times of around 6 s and 40 s, respectively. Our proposed design demonstrate a new approach for selective molecular recognition using polar interactions between analyte vapors and heterojunctions of 2D-materials.

We develop herein plasmonic-catalytic Au-IrO$_2$ nanostructures with a morphology optimized for efficient light harvesting and catalytic surface area; the nanoparticles have a dendritic morphology, with closely spaced Au branches all partially covered by an ultrathin (1 nm) IrO$_2$ shell. This nanoparticle architecture optimizes optical features due to the interactions of closely spaced plasmonic branches forming electromagnetic hot spots, and the ultra-thin IrO$_2$ layer maximizes efficient use of this expensive catalyst. This concept was evaluated towards the enhancement of the electrocatalytic performances towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as a model transformation. The OER can play a central role in meeting future energy demands but the performance of conventional electrocatalysts in this reaction is limited by the sluggish OER kinetics. We demonstrate an improvement of the OER performance for one of the most active OER catalysts, IrO$_2$, by harvesting plasmonic effects from visible light illumination in multimetallic nanoparticles. We find that the OER activity for the Au-IrO$_2$ nanodendrites can be improved under LSPR excitation, matching best properties reported in the literature. Our simulations and electrocatalytic data demonstrate that the enhancement in OER activities can be attributed to an electronic interaction between Au and IrO$_2$ and to the activation of Ir-O bonds by LSPR excited hot holes, leading to a change in the reaction mechanism (rate-determinant step) under visible light illumination., Comment: 5 figures

Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the most promising methods for scalable production of graphene. However, limited understanding of its Raman spectrum as well as lack of measurement standards for graphene strongly limit its industrial applications. In this work we show a systematic study of the Raman spectrum of electrochemically exfoliated graphene, produced using different electrolytes and different types of solvents in varying amounts. We demonstrate that no information on the thickness can be extracted from the shape of the 2D peak as this type of graphene is defective. Furthermore, the number of defects and the uniformity of the samples strongly depend on the experimental conditions, including post-processing. Under specific conditions, formation of short conductive trans-polyacetylene chains has been observed. Convergent beam electron diffraction is routinely applied for studying deformation and local strain in thick crystals by matching the crystal structure to the observed intensity distributions. Recently, it has been demonstrated that CBED can be applied for imaging two-dimensional (2D) crystals where a direct reconstruction is possible and three-dimensional crystal deformations at a nanometre resolution can be retrieved. Here, we demonstrate that second-order effects allow for further information to be obtained regarding stacking arrangements between the crystals. Such effects are especially pronounced in samples consisting of multiple layers of 2D crystals. We show, using simulations and experiments, that twisted multilayer samples exhibit extra modulations of interference fringes in CBED patterns, i. e., a CBED moir\'e. A simple and robust method for the evaluation of the composition and the number of layers from a single-shot CBED pattern is demonstrated.

Van der Waals heterostructures form a massive interdisciplinary research field, fueled by the rich material science opportunities presented by layer assembly of artificial solids with controlled composition, order and relative rotation of adjacent atomic planes. Here we use atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and multiscale modeling to show that the lattice of MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ bilayers twisted to a small angle, $\theta<3^{\circ}$, reconstructs into energetically favorable stacking domains separated by a network of stacking faults. For crystal alignments close to 3R stacking, a tessellated pattern of mirror reflected triangular 3R domains emerges, separated by a network of partial dislocations which persist to the smallest twist angles. Scanning tunneling measurements show that the electronic properties of those 3R domains appear qualitatively different from 2H TMDs, featuring layer-polarized conduction band states caused by lack of both inversion and mirror symmetry. In contrast, for alignments close to 2H stacking, stable 2H domains dominate, with nuclei of an earlier unnoticed metastable phase limited to $\sim$ 5nm in size. This appears as a kagome-like pattern at $\theta\sim 1^{\circ}$, transitioning at $\theta\rightarrow 0$ to a hexagonal array of screw dislocations separating large-area 2H domains.

In graphite crystals, layers of graphene reside in three equivalent, but distinct, stacking positions typically referred to as A, B, and C projections. The order in which the layers are stacked defines the electronic structure of the crystal, providing an exciting degree of freedom which can be exploited for designing graphitic materials with unusual properties including predicted high-temperature superconductivity and ferromagnetism. However, the lack of control of the stacking sequence limits most research to the stable ABA form of graphite. Here we demonstrate a strategy to control the stacking order using van der Waals technology. To this end, we first visualise the distribution of stacking domains in graphite films and then perform directional encapsulation of ABC-rich graphite crystallites with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We found that hBN-encapsulation which is introduced parallel to the graphite zigzag edges preserves ABC stacking, while encapsulation along the armchair edges transforms the stacking to ABA. The technique presented here should facilitate new research on the important properties of ABC graphite.

Control over the electronic spectrum at low energy is at the heart of the functioning of modern advanced electronics: high electron mobility transistors, semiconductor and Capasso terahertz lasers, and many others. Most of those devices rely on the meticulous engineering of the size quantization of electrons in quantum wells. This avenue, however, hasn't been explored in the case of 2D materials. Here we transfer this concept onto the van der Waals heterostructures which utilize few-layers films of InSe as quantum wells. The precise control over the energy of the subbands and their uniformity guarantees extremely high quality of the electronic transport in such systems. Using novel tunnelling and light emitting devices, for the first time we reveal the full subbands structure by studying resonance features in the tunnelling current, photoabsorption and light emission. In the future, these systems will allow development of elementary blocks for atomically thin infrared and THz light sources based on intersubband optical transitions in few-layer films of van der Waals materials., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials have been obtained by exfoliation of van der Waals crystals. Recently, there has been growing interest in fabricating synthetic 2D crystals which have no layered bulk analogues. These efforts have been focused mainly on the surface growth of molecules in high vacuum. Here, we report an approach to making 2D crystals of covalent solids by chemical conversion of van der Waals layers. As an example, we use 2D indium selenide (InSe) obtained by exfoliation and converted it by direct fluorination into indium fluoride (InF3), which has a non-layered, rhombohedral structure and therefore cannot be possibly obtained by exfoliation. The conversion of InSe into InF3 is found to be feasible for thicknesses down to three layers of InSe, and the obtained stable InF3 layers are doped with selenium. We study this new 2D material by optical, electron transport and Raman measurements and show that it is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 2.2 eV, exhibiting high optical transparency across the visible and infrared spectral ranges. We also demonstrate the scalability of our approach by chemical conversion of large-area, thin InSe laminates obtained by liquid exfoliation into InF3 films. The concept of chemical conversion of cleavable thin van der Waals crystals into covalently-bonded non-cleavable ones opens exciting prospects for synthesizing a wide variety of novel atomically thin covalent crystals.

The ability of different materials to display self-limiting growth has recently attracted enormous attention due to the importance of nanoscale materials in applications for catalysis, energy conversion, (opto)electronics, etc. Here, we show that electrochemical deposition of palladium (Pd) between graphene oxide (GO) sheets result in a self-limiting growth of 5 nm thin Pd nanosheets. The self-limiting growth is found to be a consequence of strong interaction of Pd with the confining GO sheets which results in bulk growth of Pd being energetically unfavourable for larger thicknesses. Furthermore, we have successfully carried out liquid exfoliation of the resulting Pd-GO laminates to isolate Pd nanosheets and demonstrated their high efficiency in continuous flow catalysis and electrocatalysis.

Atomically thin films of III-VI post-transition metal chalcogenides (InSe and GaSe) form an interesting class of two-dimensional semiconductor that feature strong variations of their band gap as a function of the number of layers in the crystal [1-4] and, specifically for InSe, an earlier predicted crossover from a direct gap in the bulk [5,6] to a weakly indirect band gap in monolayers and bilayers [7-11]. Here, we apply angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with submicrometer spatial resolution ($\mu$ARPES) to visualise the layer-dependent valence band structure of mechanically exfoliated crystals of InSe. We show that for 1 layer and 2 layer InSe the valence band maxima are away from the $\mathbf{\Gamma}$-point, forming an indirect gap, with the conduction band edge known to be at the $\mathbf{\Gamma}$-point. In contrast, for six or more layers the bandgap becomes direct, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The high-quality monolayer and bilayer samples enables us to resolve, in the photoluminescence spectra, the band-edge exciton (A) from the exciton (B) involving holes in a pair of deeper valence bands, degenerate at $\mathbf{\Gamma}$, with the splitting that agrees with both $\mu$ARPES data and the results of DFT modelling. Due to the difference in symmetry between these two valence bands, light emitted by the A-exciton should be predominantly polarised perpendicular to the plane of the two-dimensional crystal, which we have verified for few-layer InSe crystals.

Van der Waals heterostructures have been lately intensively studied because they offer a large variety of properties that can be controlled by selecting 2D materials and their sequence in the stack. The exact arrangement of the layers as well as the exact arrangement of the atoms within the layers, both are important for the properties of the resulting device. Recently it has been demonstrated that convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) allows quantitative three-dimensional mapping of atomic positions in three-dimensional materials from a single CBED pattern. In this study we investigate CBED in more detail by simulating and performing various CBED regimes, with convergent and divergent wavefronts, on a somewhat simplified system: a 2D monolayer crystal. In CBED, each CBED spot is in fact an in-line hologram of the sample, where in-line holography is known to exhibit high intensity contrast in detection of weak phase objects that are not detectable in conventional in-focus imaging mode. Adsorbates exhibit strong intensity contrast in zero and higher order CBED spots, whereas lattice deformation such as strain or rippling cause noticeable intensity contrast only in the first and higher order CBED spots. The individual CBED spots can be reconstructed as typical in-line holograms, and the resolution of 2.13 A can be in principle achieved in the reconstructions. We provide simulated and experimental examples of CBED of a 2D monolayer crystal. The simulations show that individual CBED spots can be treated as in-line holograms and sample distributions such as adsorbates, can be reconstructed. Individual atoms can be reconstructed from a single CBED pattern provided the later exhibits high-order CBED spots. Examples of reconstructions obtained from experimental CBED patterns, at a resolution of 2.7 A, are shown.

Two-dimensional semiconductors - atomic layers of materials with covalent intra-layer bonding and weak (van der Waals or quadrupole) coupling between the layers - are a new class of materials with great potential for optoelectronic applications. Among those, a special position is now being taken by post-transition metal chalcogenides (PTMC), InSe and GaSe. It has recently been found that the band gap in 2D crystals of InSe more than doubles in the monolayer compared to thick multilayer crystals, while the high mobility of conduction band electrons is promoted by their light in-plane mass. Here, we use Raman and PL measurements of encapsulated few layer samples, coupled with accurate atomic force and transmission electron microscope structural characterisation to reveal new optical properties of atomically thin GaSe preserved by hBN encapsulation. The band gaps we observe complement the spectral range provided by InSe films, so that optical activity of these two almost lattice-matched PTMC films and their heterostructures densely cover the spectrum of photons from violet to infrared. We demonstrate the realisation of the latter by the first observation of interlayer excitonic photoluminescence in few-layer InSe-GaSe heterostructures. The spatially indirect transition is direct in k-space and therefore is bright, while its energy can be tuned in a broad range by the number of layers., Comment: 8 pages 4 figures

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a prototypical high-quality two-dimensional insulator and an ideal material to study tunneling phenomena, as it can be easily integrated in vertical van der Waals devices. For spintronic devices, its potential has been demonstrated both for efficient spin injection in lateral spin valves and as a barrier in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Here we reveal the effect of point defects inevitably present in mechanically exfoliated hBN on the tunnel magnetoresistance of Co-hBN-NiFe MTJs. We observe a clear enhancement of both the conductance and magnetoresistance of the junction at well-defined bias voltages, indicating resonant tunneling through magnetic (spin-polarized) defect states. The spin polarization of the defect states is attributed to exchange coupling of a paramagnetic impurity in the few-atomic-layer thick hBN to the ferromagnetic electrodes. This is confirmed by excellent agreement with theoretical modelling. Our findings should be taken into account in analyzing tunneling processes in hBN-based magnetic devices. More generally, our study shows the potential of using atomically thin hBN barriers with defects to engineer the magnetoresistance of MTJs and to achieve spin filtering, opening the door towards exploiting the spin degree of freedom in current studies of point defects as quantum emitters.

Van der Waals heterostructures, which explore the synergetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials when assembled into three-dimensional stacks, have already brought to life a number of exciting new phenomena and novel electronic devices. Still, the interaction between the layers in such assembly, possible surface reconstruction, intrinsic and extrinsic defects are very difficult to characterise by any method, because of the single-atomic nature of the crystals involved. Here we present a convergent beam electron holographic technique which allows imaging of the stacking order in such heterostructures. Based on the interference of electron waves scattered on different crystals in the stack, this approach allows one to reconstruct the relative rotation, stretching, out-of-plane corrugation of the layers with atomic precision. Being holographic in nature, our approach allows extraction of quantitative information about the three-dimensional structure of the typical defects from a single image covering thousands of square nanometres. Furthermore, qualitative information about the defects in the stack can be extracted from the convergent diffraction patterns even without reconstruction - simply by comparing the patterns in different diffraction spots. We expect that convergent beam electron holography will be widely used to study the properties of van der Waals heterostructures.

We demonstrate a new design of graphene liquid cell consisting of a thin lithographically patterned hexagonal boron nitride crystal encapsulated from both sides with graphene windows. The ultra-thin window liquid cells produced have precisely controlled volumes and thicknesses, and are robust to repeated vacuum cycling. This technology enables exciting new opportunities for liquid cell studies, providing a reliable platform for high resolution transmission electron microscope imaging and spectral mapping. The presence of water was confirmed using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) via the detection of the oxygen K-edge and measuring the thickness of full and empty cells. We demonstrate the imaging capabilities of these liquid cells by tracking the dynamic motion and interactions of small metal nanoparticles with diameters of 0.5-5 nm. We further present an order of magnitude improvement in the analytical capabilities compared to previous liquid cell data, with 1 nm spatial resolution elemental mapping achievable for liquid encapsulated bimetallic nanoparticles using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS)., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures
