Abstract The current-driven movement of magnetic skyrmions along a nanostripe is essential for the advancement and functionality of a new category of spintronic devices resembling racetracks. Despite extensive research into skyrmion dynamics, experimental verification of current-induced motion of ultra-small skyrmions within an ultrathin nanostripe is still pending. Here, we unveil the motion of individual 80 nm-size skyrmions in an FeGe track with an ultrathin width of 100 nm. The skyrmions can move steadily along the track over a broad range of current densities by using controlled pulse durations of as low as 2 ns. The potential landscape, arising from the magnetic edge twists in such a geometrically confined system, introduces skyrmion inertia and ensures efficient motion with a vanishing skyrmion Hall angle. Our results showcase the steady motion of skyrmions in an ultrathin track, offering a practical pathway for implementing skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Abstract The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate films has sparked significant interest and expanded the realm of superconductors, in which the infinite-layer structure and proper chemical doping are both of the essence. Nonetheless, the reasons for the absence of superconductivity in bulk infinite-layer nickelates remain puzzling. Herein, we investigate atomic defects and electronic structures in bulk infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 using scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal the presence of three-dimensional (3D) block-like structural domains resulting from intersecting defect structures, disrupting the continuity within crystal grains, which could be a crucial factor in giving rise to the insulating character and inhibiting the emergence of superconductivity. Moreover, the infinite-layer structure, without complete topotactic reduction, retains interstitial oxygen atoms on the Nd atomic plane in bulk nickelates, possibly further aggravating the local distortions of NiO2 planes and hindering the superconductivity. These findings shed light on the existence of structural and atomic defects in bulk nickelates and provide valuable insights into the influence of proper topotactic reduction and structural orders on superconductivity.

Abstract Topological spin textures are characterized by magnetic topological charges, Q, which govern their electromagnetic properties. Recent studies have achieved skyrmion bundles with arbitrary integer values of Q, opening possibilities for exploring topological spintronics based on Q. However, the realization of stable skyrmion bundles in chiral magnets at room temperature and zero magnetic field — the prerequisite for realistic device applications — has remained elusive. Here, through the combination of pulsed currents and reversed magnetic fields, we experimentally achieve skyrmion bundles with different integer Q values — reaching a maximum of 24 at above room temperature and zero magnetic field — in the chiral magnet Co8Zn10Mn2. We demonstrate the field-driven annihilation of high-Q bundles and present a phase diagram as a function of temperature and field. Our experimental findings are consistently corroborated by micromagnetic simulations, which reveal the nature of the skyrmion bundle as that of skyrmion tubes encircled by a fractional Hopfion.

Abstract Livestock constitute the world’s largest anthropogenic source of methane (CH4), providing high-protein food to humans but also causing notable climate risks. With rapid urbanization and increasing income levels in China, the livestock sector will face even higher emission pressures, which could jeopardize China’s carbon neutrality target. To formulate targeted methane reduction measures, it is crucial to estimate historical and current emissions on fine geographical scales, considering the high spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability of livestock emissions. However, there is currently a lack of time-series data on city-level livestock methane emissions in China, despite the flourishing livestock industry and large amount of meat consumed. In this study, we constructed a city-level livestock methane emission inventory with dynamic spatial-temporal emission factors considering biological, management, and environmental factors from 2010 to 2020 in China. This inventory could serve as a basic database for related research and future methane mitigation policy formulation, given the population boom and dietary changes.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a convenient dietary intervention for multiple diseases, including type 2 diabetes. However, whether it can be used as a long-term antidiabetic approach is still unknown. Here, we confirm that IF alone is beneficial for both moderate and severe diabetic mice, but its antidiabetic effects clearly diminish at later stages, especially for severe diabetic db/db mice, which have obviously impaired autophagy. We found that static magnetic fields can directly promote actin assembly and boost IF-induced autophagy. Consequently, the pancreatic islet and liver were improved, and the antidiabetic effects of IF were boosted. In fact, at later stages, combined static magnetic field and IF could reduce the blood glucose level of moderate type 2 diabetic mice by 40.5% (P < 0.001) and severe type 2 diabetes by 34.4% (P < 0.05), when IF alone no longer has significant blood glucose reduction effects. Therefore, although IF is generally beneficial for diabetes, our data reveal its insufficiency for late-stage diabetes, which can be compensated by a simple, noninvasive, long-lasting, and nonpharmacological strategy for effective long-term diabetic control.

Background: Recently, many studies have been devoted to discovering nutrients for exercise-like effects. Resistance exercise and the intake of essential amino acids (EAAs) are known to be factors that can affect muscle mass and strength improvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in muscle quality, myokines, and inflammation in response to resistance exercise and EAA supplementation. Methods: Thirty-four males volunteered to participate in this study. They were assigned to four groups: (1) placebo (CO), (2) resistance exercise (RE), (3) EAA supplementation, and (4) RE + EAA supplementation. Body composition, muscle quality, myokines, and inflammation were measured at baseline and four weeks after treatment. Results: Lean body fat had decreased in both RE and RE + EAA groups. Lean body mass had increased in only the RE + EAA group. In all groups except for CO, irisin, myostatin A, and TNF-α levels had decreased. The grip strength of the right hand and trunk flexion peak torque increased in the RE group. The grip strength of the left hand, trunk flexion peak torque, and knee flexion peak torque of the left leg were increased in RE + EAA. Conclusions: RE, EAA, and RE + EAA could effectively improve the muscle quality, myokine, and inflammation factors of young adult males. This finding highlights the importance of resistance exercise and amino acid intake.

There has been much interest in using skyrmions for new approaches to compution, however, creating, deleting and driving skyrmions remains a challenge. Here, Wang et al demonstrate all three operations for skyrmions in tailored Co8Zn10Mn2 nanodevices using tailored current pulses.

With the aim of promoting the qualities for total hip joint replacement, the wettability and tribological behaviors of PEEK composites pins with two sets of different fillers (PEEK/CF or PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite) against Co-Cr alloy discs with five categories of surface textures (polished, orthogonal, spiral, r-θ, and orthogonal combined with spiral) were explored. It is revealed that the existence of CF in PEEK matrix increases the hydrophilicity in addition to the strength of PEEK, while the addition of PTFE increases the hydrophobicity of PEEK. The Co-Cr alloy discs with hydrophilic properties can be adjusted as hydrophobic, with the depth of textured grooves exceeding the critical sag height determined by the contact angle and the groove width. It can be concluded that PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite composite has a lower wear rate than PEEK only reinforced with CF against Co-Cr alloy, both without surface texture and with shallow or deep grooves. The existence of shallow grooves on the disc surface could help the PEEK blends to achieve a steady friction against Co-Cr alloy in addition to collecting the worn debris. PEEK blend pins with 10 vol% CF, 10 vol% PTFE and 10 vol% graphite can achieve a lower friction coefficient of no more than 0.2 against Co-Cr alloy discs with shallow grooves around 3.5 μm in orthogonal or spiral textures.

Abstract Flexible magnetic materials with robust and controllable perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are highly desirable for developing flexible high-performance spintronic devices. However, it is still challenge to fabricate PMA films on polymers directly. Here, we report a facile method for synthesizing single-crystal freestanding SrRuO3 membranes with controlled crystal structure and orientation using water-soluble Ca3-xSrxAl2O6 sacrificial layers. Through cooperative effect of crystal structure and orientation, flexible membranes reveal highly tunable magnetic anisotropy from in-plane to out-of-plane with a remarkable PMA energy of 7 × 106 erg·cm−3. First-principle calculations reveal that the underlying mechanism of PMA modulation is intimately correlated with structure-controlled Ru 4d-orbital occupation, as well as spin-orbital matrix element differences, dependent on the crystal orientation. In addition, even after 10,000 bending cycles, the PMA keeps stable, indicating a robust magnetism reliability in the prepared films. This work provides a feasible approach to prepare the flexible oxide films with strong and controllable PMA.

The topological characterization of complex systems has significantly contributed to our understanding of the principles of collective dynamics. However, the representation of general complex networks is not enough for explaining certain problems, such as collective actions. Considering the effectiveness of hypernetworks on modeling real-world complex networks, in this paper, we proposed a hypernetwork-based Pólya urn model that considers the effect of group identity. The mathematical deduction and simulation experiments show that social influence provides a strong imitation environment for individuals, which can prevent the dynamics from being self-correcting. Additionally, the unpredictability of the social system increases with growing social influence, and the effect of group identity can moderate market inequality caused by individual preference and social influence. The present work provides a modeling basis for a better understanding of the logic of collective dynamics.

F-actin (filamentous actin) has been shown to be sensitive to mechanical stimuli and play critical roles in cell attachment, migration, and cancer metastasis, but there are very limited ways to perturb F-actin dynamics with low cell toxicity. Magnetic field is a noninvasive and reversible physical tool that can easily penetrate cells and human bodies. Here, we show that 0.1/0.4-T 4.2-Hz moderate-intensity low-frequency rotating magnetic field-induced electric field could directly decrease F-actin formation in vitro and in vivo, which results in decreased breast cancer cell migration, invasion, and attachment. Moreover, low-frequency rotating magnetic fields generated significantly different effects on F-actin in breast cancer vs. noncancerous cells, including F-actin number and their recovery after magnetic field retrieval. Using an intermittent treatment modality, low-frequency rotating magnetic fields could significantly reduce mouse breast cancer metastasis, prolong mouse survival by 31.5 to 46.0% (P < 0.0001), and improve their overall physical condition. Therefore, our work demonstrates that low-frequency rotating magnetic fields not only can be used as a research tool to perturb F-actin but also can inhibit breast cancer metastasis through F-actin modulation while having minimum effects on normal cells, which reveals their potential to be developed as temporal-controlled, noninvasive, and high-penetration physical treatments for metastatic cancer.

Finding dense subgraphs is a central problem in graph mining, with a variety of real-world application domains including biological analysis, financial market evaluation, and sociological surveys. While a series of studies have been devoted to finding subgraphs with maximum density, the problem of finding multiple subgraphs that best cover an input network has not been systematically explored. The present study discusses a variant of the densest subgraph problem and presents a mathematical model for optimizing the total coverage of an input network by extracting multiple subgraphs. A memetic algorithm that maximizes coverage is proposed and shown to be both effective and efficient. The method is applied to real-world networks. The empirical meaning of the optimal sampling method is discussed.

Skyrmions are topological two-dimensional spin textures that in three-dimensional systems resemble strings or tubes. Here, using transmission electron microscopy Zheng et al observe the braiding of skyrmion strings in FeGe and predict this phenomenon for a large family of magnets.

The common approaches to control of skymions cause significant heat dissipation or require high electric fields near the breakdown threshold. Here, the authors demonstrate electric-field control of skyrmions through strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic heterostructures.

Mammalian adipose tissue can be divided into two major types, namely, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). According to classical view, the main function of WAT is to store excess energy in the form of triglycerides, while BAT is a thermogenic tissue that acts a pivotal part in maintaining the core body temperature. White adipocytes display high plasticity and can transdifferentiate into beige adipocytes which have many similar morphological and functional properties with brown adipocytes under the stimulations of exercise, cold exposure and other factors. This phenomenon is also known as ‘browning of WAT’. In addition to transdifferentiation, beige adipocytes can also come from de novo differentiation from tissue-resident progenitors. Activating BAT and inducing browning of WAT can accelerate the intake of glycolipids and reduce the insulin secretion requirement, which may be a new strategy to improve glycolipids metabolism and insulin resistance of obese and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This review mainly discusses the significance of brown and beige adipose tissues in the treatment of obesity and T2DM, and focuses on the effect of the browning agent on obesity and T2DM, which provides a brand-new theoretical reference for the prevention and treatment of obesity and T2DM.

FinFETs are an evolution of metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) featuring a semiconducting channel vertically wrapped by conformal gate electrodes. Here, the authors use a two-dimensional semiconductor to push the FinFET width to sub-nm whilst achieving a 107 ON/OFF ratio.

With excellent creep resistance, high-temperature thermal strength and high-temperature fatigue strength, Inconel 625 is widely applied to fabricate structural components in the aerospace field, where fatigue life is a key point. Laser shock peening (LSP) is considered to improve the fatigue strength and fatigue crack growth resistance of metal materials. The present work was conducted to investigate the influence of LSP on strain-controlled fatigue behavior of Inconel 625. The surface microstructures of specimens before and after LSP were observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The strain-controlled fatigue loading tests with different strain amplitudes ranging from 0.4% to 1.2% were carried out on the specimens, and the topography of fracture appearance was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The investigations showed that the specimens with LSP presented fewer crack initiations, shorter fatigue striations space and smaller dimples or micropores, which account for the enhancement of the fatigue life for the LSP specimens. Furthermore, the plastic deformation, ultra-fine grains, twins and dislocations caused by LSP could prevent crack initiation, crack propagation and ultimate fracture, hence prolonging the fatigue life of the Inconel 625. In addition, it was revealed that the cyclic strain hardening as well as cyclic strain softening remains almost the same to Inconel 625 with or without LSP.

In response to the widespread adoption of vehicle-following systems in autonomous applications, the demand for collision warning to enable safer functionalities is increasing. This study provides an approach for automated vehicle guidance to follow the preceding vehicles longitudinally and puts emphasis on the performance of collision avoidance. The safety distance model is established, which contains a distance compensation algorithm to deal with the special case on curved roads. By introducing the algorithm of velocity and distance prediction, the collision risks are detected and measured in real time. The objective function is established based on optimal control theory to solve the desired following acceleration. The control system designed with the method of proportion integration differentiation combines throttle percentage and brake pressure as outputs to compensate acceleration. In the Carsim and Simulink co-simulation platform, the control system for longitudinal collision avoidance is simulated and analysed for four typical working conditions: the preceding vehicle drives at a constant speed on straight and curved roads, while the preceding vehicle drives at various speeds on straight and curved roads. The results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, which can be used for the longitudinal control of vehicle-following active collision avoidance.

Two types of magnetic domains, that is, type-I domain belt domain and type-II new stripe domain, are observed in a kagome metal DyMn6Sn6 by microscopic magneto-optic Kerr imaging technique. From 255 to 235 K, the spin reorientation is observed directly in DyMn6Sn6. We analyze the structure of two types of domains through brightness distribution of the images. The type-II domain exists from 235 to 160 K by zero-field cooling (ZFC). At the same time, type-I domain and type-II domain coexist and transform into each other with variation of temperature. Type-II domains can easily transform into type-I domains when the temperature and magnetic field changes, and this process is irreversible. These results demonstrate that the type-I domain is more stable than the type-II domain. The phase diagram of magnetic domains in DyMn6Sn6 is obtained.

Abstract A novel fiber inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed for simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature. The sensor composes of single mode-multimode-dispersion compensation-multimode-single mode fiber (MMF-DCF-MMF) structure, using the direct fusion technology. The experimental results show curvature sensitivities of −12.82 nm/m−1 and −14.42 nm/m−1 in the range of 0–0.65 m−1 for two resonant dips, as well as temperature sensitivities of 57.6 pm/°C and 74.3 pm/°C within the range of 20 °C–150 °C. In addition, the sensor has unique advantages of easy fabrication, low cost, high fringe visibility of 24dB, and high sensitivity, which shows a good application prospect in dual-parameters of sensing of curvature and temperature.

Abstract A high sensitive refractive index sensor based on the cladding etched photonic crystal fiber (PCF) Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed, which is spliced a section of photonic crystal fiber between two single modes fibers (SMFs).The interference fringe of the MZI shifts with the variation of the ambient refractive index (RI). It is found that the RI sensitivity slightly decrease with an increase in the interference length. The sensitivities of MZI with 35 mm PCF, 40 mm PCF, and 45 mm PCF are 106.19 nm/RIU, 93.33 nm/RIU, and 73.64 nm/RIU, respectively, in the range of 1.333 to 1.381. After etched, the RI sensitivity of the MZI could be improved obviously. The RI sensitivities of the MZI with 35 mm PCF are up to 211.53 nm/RIU and 359.37 nm/RIU when the cladding diameter decreases to 112 μm and 91 μm, respectively. Moreover, the sensor is insensitive to temperature, and the measured sensitivity is only 9.21 pm/°C with the range from 20°C to 500°C. In addition, the sensor has advantage of simple fabrication, low cost, and high RI sensitivity.

Proposals for skyrmion-based high-density memory devices require an understanding of the formation and shape of skyrmions in confined geometries. Here, the authors use electron holography to image magnetic textures in FeGe nanostripes and explore the parameters governing skyrmion morphology.

Information diffusion has been widely discussed in various disciplines including sociology, economics, physics or computer science. In this paper, we generalize the linear threshold model in signed networks consisting of both positive and negative links. We analyze the dynamics of the spread of information based on balance theory, and find that a signed network can generate path dependence while structural balance can help remove the path dependence when seeded with balanced initialized active nodes. Simulation shows that the diffusion of information based on positive links contradicts that based on negative links. More positive links in signed networks are more likely to activate nodes and remove path dependence, but they can reduce predictability that is based on active states. We also find that a balanced structure can facilitate both the magnitude and speed of information diffusion, remove the path dependence, and cause polarization.

The denitrification characteristics of a sulfur autotrophic denitrification reactor are investigated. The results show that domestication of sulfur autotrophic bacteria is completed within 15 days after biofilm formation in the reactor, which is shorter than other similar researches. The nitrogen removal rate remains over than 90%, and the denitrification rate reaches 18.5 mg N/(L·h) with influent NO-3-N of 70 mg/L , influent pH of 8 and HRT of 4.3 h . Thiobacillus denitrificans are observed in the whole reactor when domestication finishes, while it is more abundant in the middle and lower part. The optimal influent NO-3-N concentration for the reactor is 50 mg/L, the optimal temperature is 30~35 ℃, the optimal influent pH is 7~8, and the nitrogen removal rate is over than 90%.

Structural balance plays an important role in the dynamics of signed networks. Based on structural balance, we generalize the evolution of cooperation in signed networks. Here we develop a new simulation model to study the impact of structural balance on the evolution of cooperation in signed networks. The simulation shows that cooperation prevails when an individual has a higher probability of adjusting the signs of its relations. We also find that structural balance forces the coexistence of cooperators and defectors, while the initial attributes of networks have little impact on the evolution of cooperation in the presence of structural balance, although they have a strong effect on the evolution of structural balance.

Network structure is an important component of analysis in many parts of the natural and social sciences. Optimization of network structure in order to achieve specific goals has been a major research focus. The small-world network is known to have a high average clustering coefficient and a low average path length. Previous studies have introduced a series of models to generate small-world networks, but few focus on how to improve the efficiency of the generating process. In this paper, we propose a genetic simulated annealing (GSA) algorithm to improve the efficiency of transforming other kinds of networks into small-world networks by adding edges, and we apply this algorithm to some experimental systems. In the process of using the GSA algorithm, the existence of hubs and disassortative structure is revealed.

Optimizing average path length (APL) by adding shortcut edges has been widely discussed in connection with social networks, but the relationship between network diameter and APL is generally ignored in the dynamic optimization of APL. In this paper, we analyze this relationship and transform the problem of optimizing APL into the problem of decreasing diameter to 2. We propose a mathematic model based on a memetic algorithm. Experimental results show that our algorithm can efficiently solve this problem as well as optimize APL.

We solve the magnetostriction strains for B20 helimagnets in the skyrmion crystal phase. By taking MnSi as an example, we reproduce its temperature–magnetic field ( T – B ) phase diagrams within a thermodynamic potential incorporating magnetoelastic interactions. The calculation shows that the normal strain ε _33 undergoes a sudden jump through a conical-skyrmion phase transition at any temperature. The corresponding experimental measurements for MnSi agree quantitatively well with the calculation.

We demonstrated a fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coated with platinum (Pt) for the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. The sensor was fabricated by splicing a section of multimode fiber (MMF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs) and the Pt coating was prepared by iron sputtering technology. Fine interference fringes of over 20 dB with a compact size of 20 mm were achieved. The experimental results of the two different resonant dips showed strain sensitivities of −2.06 pm/με and −2.21 pm/με, as well as temperature sensitivities of 55.2 pm/°C and 53.4 pm/°C, respectively. Furthermore, it was found that the Pt coating can improve the strain sensitivity significantly, resulting in an increase of about 54.5%. In addition, the sensor has advantages of easy fabrication, low cost, and high sensitivity, showing great potential for the dual-parameter sensing of strain and temperature.

Despite notable progress, the fabrication of well-defined polypeptides via controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) using convenient catalysts under mild conditions in a relatively short polymerization time is still challenging. Herein, an easily obtained catalyst system composed of zinc acetate and aniline was explored to mediate the fast ROP of γ-benzyl-l-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride (BLG-NCA) monomer, to produce poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamates) (PBLGs) with controllable molecular weights and narrow dispersity. Considering the excellent cooperative action of zinc acetate and a broad scope of aniline derivatives with different functional groups to control ROP of BLG-NCA, this method may offer a useful platform enabling the rapid generation of end-functionalized PBLG and block copolymers for numerous biomedical applications.

A highly sensitive strain sensor based on a novel fiber in line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) was demonstrated experimentally. The MZI was realized by splicing a section of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with the same length of thin core fiber (TCF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs). The fringe visibility of MZI can reach as high as 20 dB in air. In particular, the strain sensitivity of −1.95 pm/με was achieved within a range from 0 to 4000 με. Furthermore, the strain properties of different length of MZI was investigated. It was found that the sensitivity was weekly dependent on the length of MZI. The strain sensitivities corresponding to the MZI with 35 mm PCF, 40 mm PCF and 45 mm PCF at 1550 nm band were −1.78 pm/με, −1.73 pm/με and −1.63 pm/με, respectively. Additionally, the sensor has advantages of simple fabrication, compact size and high sensitivity as well as good fringe visibility.

High quality Sr _4 Ru _3 O _10 nanoflakes are obtained by the scotch tape-based micro-mechanical exfoliation method. The metamagnetic transition temperature ${{T}_{m}}^{flake}$ is found to decrease in line with the decrease of thickness, while the ferromagnetic (FM) phase, the ordinary, and anomalous Hall effects (OHE and AHE) are independent on the thickness of the flake. Analysis of the data demonstrates that the AHE reflects the FM nature of Sr _4 Ru _3 O _10 , and the decrease of thickness favors the Ru moments aligned in the ab -plane, which induces a decrease of the metamagnetic transition temperature compared with the bulk.
