1. Terrestrial invertebrate hosts of human pathogens in urban ecosystems

Abstract: Terrestrial invertebrates in urban ecosystems are extremely species-rich, have many important roles in material flow and energy circulation, and are host to many human pathogens that pose threats to human health. These invertebrates are widely distributed in urban areas, including both out- and in-door environments. Consequently, humans are frequently in contact with them, which provides many opportunities for them to pose human health risks. However, comprehensive knowledge on human pathogen transfer via invertebrates is lacking, with research to date primarily focused on dipterans (e.g., mosquitoes, flies). Here, we take a broad taxonomic approach and review terrestrial invertebrate hosts (incl. mosquitoes, flies, termites, cockroaches, mites, ticks, earthworms, collembola, fleas, snails, and beetles) of human pathogens, with a focus on transmission pathways. We also discuss how urbanization and global warming are likely to influence the communities of invertebrate hosts and have flow-on risks to human health. Finally, we identify current research gaps and provide perspectives on future directions.

3. Suppressing of alkaline aggregate reaction (AAR) through waterproofing of concrete surface, aggregates, and mortars

Abstract: Abstract Water is necessary for the alkali aggregate reaction to occur and this study investigates the impact of waterproofing on alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete by separating water from alkali reactive aggregates through surface, aggregate, and matrix treatments. Accelerated mortar bar tests (AMBT) are conducted to analyze the expansion caused by alkali aggregates. Furthermore, the suppressive mechanism of waterproofing on AAR is explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the influence of waterproof concrete aggregate and matrix on pore characteristics and hydration products is assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrate that surface waterproofing with silane and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) effectively suppress AAR. Moreover, PVA-coated aggregates significantly enhance the compactness of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in concrete. Based on these findings, an improved model considering waterproofness is proposed to quantify the degree of alkali aggregate reaction. These findings offer valuable guidance for controlling AAR.

4. Distribution patterns of soil bacteria, fungi, and protists emerge from distinct assembly processes across subcommunities

Abstract: Abstract Environmental change exerts a profound effect on soil microbial domains—including bacteria, fungi, and protists—that each perform vital ecological processes. While these microbial domains are ubiquitous and extremely diverse, little is known about how they respond to environmental changes in urban soil ecosystems and what ecological processes shape them. Here we investigated the community assembly processes governing bacteria, fungi, and protists through the lens of four distinct subcommunities: abundant, conditionally rare, conditionally abundant, and rare taxa. We show that transient taxa, including the conditionally rare and conditionally rare or abundant taxa, were the predominant subcommunities. Deterministic processes (e.g., environmental filtering) had major roles in structuring all subcommunities of fungi, as well as conditionally rare and abundant protists. Stochastic processes had strong effects in structuring all subcommunities of bacteria (except rare taxa) and conditionally rare protists. Overall, our study underscores the importance of complementing the traditional taxonomy of microbial domains with the subcommunity approach when investigating microbial communities in urban soil ecosystems.

5. Performance Exploration of Optical Wireless Video Communication Based on Adaptive Block Sampling Compressive Sensing

Abstract: Optical wireless video transmission technology combines the advantages of high data rates, enhanced security, large bandwidth capacity, and strong anti-interference capabilities inherent in optical communication, establishing it as a pivotal technology in contemporary data transmission networks. However, video data comprises a large volume of image information, resulting in substantial data flow with significant redundant bits. To address this, we propose an adaptive block sampling compressive sensing algorithm that overcomes the limitations of sampling inflexibility in traditional compressive sensing, which often leads to either redundant or insufficient local sampling. This method significantly reduces the presence of redundant bits in video images. First, the sampling mechanism of the block-based compressive sensing algorithm was optimized. Subsequently, a wireless optical video transmission experimental system was developed using a Field-Programmable Gate Array chip. Finally, experiments were conducted to evaluate the transmission of video optical signals. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the peak signal-to-noise ratio by over 3 dB compared to other algorithms, with an enhancement exceeding 1.5 dB even in field tests, thereby significantly optimizing video transmission quality. This research contributes essential technical insights for the enhancement of wireless optical video transmission performance.

7. Antifungal effects of seven plant essential oils against Penicillium digitatum

Abstract: Abstract Background Research interest in plant essential oils has increased significantly due to their natural properties and consumer demand for safer methods of food preservation. Plants produce large amounts of secondary metabolites, which have potential activity against fungal pathogens. This study aimed at screening essential oils for their antifungal effects on citrus against Penicillium digitatum, morphological effect and finally determine which essential oils are the most effective. Results The EC50 of seven selected cinnamon (0.424 μL/mL), patchouli (0.513 μL/mL), vetiver (0.612 μL/mL), dill (1.597 μL/mL), origanum (1.971 μL/mL) and ylang (2.214 μL/mL) was determined. In addition, cinnamon substantially reduced sporulation (100%) followed by patchouli (86.02%), vetiver (82.73%), and chamomile (79.04%), respectively. Our GC–MS result determined variance in concentration of essential oils compound composition. The total compound composition in all seven essential oils > 1% was found to be 3 in cinnamon, 5 in dill, 10 in origanum, 13 in ylang, 11 in patchouli, 9 in chamomile and 16 in vetiver. Addition of essential oils significantly altered fungal morphology by scanning electron cryomicroscopy. Patchouli and origanum showed broken hyphae while there was an indication of severe deformation and collapse of spores in cinnamon and chamomile. Conclusion Based on our findings, we report that these essential oils could potentially be applicable in controlling P. digitatum with reduced concern for human health, environmental contamination and possibly replacement of synthetic treatments. 8. All-in-One BPSK/QPSK Switchable Transmission and Reception for Adaptive Free-Space Optical Communication Links

Abstract: Adaptive free-space optical (FSO) communication links have been extensively studied in order to adapt to variable atmospheric channel environments due to factors such as atmospheric turbulence. As a supporting technology, an all-in-one BPSK/QPSK switchable transmission and reception method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for adaptive modulation format switching in FSO links. The transmission and reception of both modulation formats are realized based on the same IQ modulator and single-photodetector coherent receiver. Simulation and experimental results show that the QPSK signal has a power penalty of about 3–4 dB compared to the BPSK signal with a BER of about 1 × 10−3. The basis for format switching is given according to the various atmospheric channel conditions. The proposed method provides a flexible and efficient solution for variable FSO communication environments to improve their performance.

Abstract: Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

15. Spatial assortment of soil organisms supports the size-plasticity hypothesis

Abstract: Abstract The size-plasticity hypothesis posits that larger size organisms are less plastic in their metabolic rates and, therefore, are more strongly environmental-filtered than smaller organisms. Many studies have supported this hypothesis by evaluating the relative roles of environmental filtration and dispersal for different taxonomic groups of soil organisms. Most observations are made at large spatial scales, which are assumed to have a wide array of varying habitats. However, since urbanization causes habitat fragmentation at smaller regional scales, testing the size-plasticity hypothesis at this scale would help better understand the spatial assortment of urban soil organisms which, in turn, would help to develop improved management and conservation strategies for urban soil health. Here, we used DNA metabarcoding on five groups of soil biota (bacteria, fungi, protists, nematodes, and invertebrates) to assess the relative importance of dispersal and environmental filters to examine the size-plasticity hypothesis at this spatial scale in an urban environment. We observed strong distance-decay of community similarities associated with higher levels of stochastic changes in bacteria, nematode, and protist communities but not fungal or invertebrate communities. Bacterial communities occupied the widest niche followed by protists and nematodes, potentially because of their higher dispersal abilities compared to the larger soil organisms. Null deviation of communities varied with taxonomic groups where bacteria and nematodes were mainly driven by homogenizing dispersal, protists and fungi by drift, and soil invertebrates by environmental selection. We further identified a small percentage of locally-adapted taxa (2.1%) that could be focal taxa for conservation and restoration efforts by, for example, restoring their habitats and enhancing their regional connectivity. These results support the size-plasticity hypothesis at the relatively unexplored regional scale in an urbanization context, and provide new information for improving urban soil health and sustainable city models.

Abstract: The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

17. Performance of Adaptive Bit-Interleaved Polar Coded Modulation in FSOC System

Abstract: This paper proposes an adaptive bit-interleaved polar coded modulation (A-BIPCM) method based on minimum logarithmic upper bound weight (MLUW). It is designed to reduce the fading effects and long string of bit error interference caused by atmospheric turbulence in free-space optical communications (FSOC). To assess the effectiveness of this method across turbulent channels of varying intensities, we conducted an evaluation of the bit error rate (BER) performance of polar codes in turbulent channels. The results demonstrate significant performance improvements provided by the A-BIPCM method compared to conventional polar code encoding and decoding. Specifically, under weak, moderate, and strong turbulence conditions, the A-BIPCM method achieves performance gains of 0.96 dB, 1.66 dB, and 1.35 dB, respectively. Additionally, an experimental verification platform for FSOC employing intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) with an atmospheric turbulence simulation channel, is established in this work. When the optical power of the detector is −16 dBm, the traditional polar code encoding and decoding performance at BER = 2.36 × 10−5, whereas the A-BIPCM scheme exhibits a significantly higher performance at BER = 2.11 × 10−6. The BER has been improved by representing an order of magnitude.

Abstract: Abstract In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with single- antenna user equipment (SAUE) or multiple-antenna user equipment (MAUE), with the increase of the number of received antennas at base station, the complexity of traditional detectors is also increasing. In order to reduce the high complexity of parallel running of the traditional Gauss-Seidel iterative method, this paper proposes a model-driven deep learning detector network, namely Block Gauss-Seidel Network (BGS-Net), which is based on the Gauss-Seidel iterative method. We reduce complexity by converting a large matrix inversion to small matrix inversions. In order to improve the symbol error ratio (SER) of BGS-Net under MAUE system, we propose Improved BGS-Net. The simulation results show that, compared with the existing model-driven algorithms, BGS-Net has lower complexity and similar the detection performance; good robustness, and its performance is less affected by changes in the number of antennas; Improved BGS-Net can improve the detection performance of BGS-Net.

Abstract: Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

20. Performance Analysis of Multi-Hop FSOC over Gamma-Gamma Turbulence and Random Fog with Generalized Pointing Errors

Abstract: The multi-hop amplify-and-forward free-space optical communication (FSOC) system is studied in random fog using the I-function, considering Gamma-Gamma atmospheric turbulence and Beckmann pointing error. Outage probability, average bit error rate and average ergodic channel capacity are obtained. Channel-state-information assisted relay performs better than fixed-gain relay under high transmitted power. Increasing the hop number significantly improves the performance. More hops are needed in medium fog than in light fog to achieve the same performance. In addition, on a single-hop link, the influence of fog channel on system performance is dominant, while atmospheric turbulence intensity, normalized jitter standard deviation and normalized boresight error have little effect on the system performance. However, on a multi-hop link, atmospheric turbulence intensity, normalized jitter standard deviation and normalized boresight error have serious effects on system performance. Compared with correcting the normalized boresight error, compensating the normalized jitter standard deviation greatly improves the multi-hop FSOC system performance. Furthermore, optimizing beam width can further improves the performance. To ensure good communication, the system should select a low-order modulation scheme.

Abstract: Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract: Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

26. A Computational Model of Cn2 Profile Inversion for Atmospheric Laser Communication in the Vertical Path

Abstract: In this paper, an atmospheric structure constant Cn2 model is proposed for evaluating the channel turbulence degree of atmospheric laser communication. First, we derive a mathematical model for the correlation between the atmospheric coherence length r0, the isoplanatic angle θ0 and Cn2 using the Hufnagel–Valley (HV) turbulence model. Then, we calculate the seven parameters of the HV model with the actual measured r0 and θ0 data as input quantities, so as to draw the Cn2 profile and the θ0 profile. The experimental results show that the fitted average Cn2 contours and single-day Cn2 contours have superior fitting performance compared with our historical data, and the daily correlation coefficient between the single-day computed θ0 contours and the measured θ0 contours is up to 87%. This result verifies the feasibility of the proposed method. The results validate the feasibility of the proposed method and provide a new technical tool for the inversion of turbulence Cn2 profiles.

Abstract: Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Abstract: In this paper, cascaded least mean square-least mean square (LMS-LMS) adaptive equalization scheme is proposed based on fiber coupling system, in order to improve the transmission performance of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated optical signals in medium and weak turbulence channels. First, the transmission performance of QPSK optical signal in different atmospheric turbulence channels is simulated and analyzed according to the characteristics of optical fiber coupling system and the characteristics of atmospheric turbulence channel. Secondly, cascaded LMS-LMS equalization scheme is proposed, and its distortion signal is corrected based on the original simulation results to verify the effectiveness and robustness of LMS-LMS. Finally, atmospheric turbulence simulator is used to verify the improvement effect of cascaded LMS-LMS adaptive equalizer under different turbulence conditions. The experimental results show that when the coherence length is $r_{0} =1.6 $ cm and the received optical power is −34 dBm, the system can transfer the information at a rate of 32 Gbps QPSK after using cascaded LMS-LMS adaptive equalizer, and the bit-error ratio (BER) is lower than the minimum limit of forward error correction (FEC, $3.8 \times 10 ^{-3}$ ). This paper can provide theoretical guidance for the performance optimization of free space QPSK optical signal transmission system.

Abstract: The data transmission between 5G floating base stations will be an important application area of the free space optical (FSO) link, but the problem of atmospheric disturbance will directly affect the application effect. An atmospheric turbulence suppression algorithm based on avalanche photodiode adaptive gain control (APDAGC) for the laser transmission terminal was proposed to suppress atmospheric turbulence. The given design mechanism and experimental results demonstrate its function to improve the performance of FSO. When APDAGC is over 1 km FSO, the variance of intensity fluctuation is lowered from 0.046 to 0.009, with the bit error rate reduced from 4.82E-6 to 1E-12. Comparatively, as APDAGC is over 6.5 km FSO, the variance of intensity fluctuation is decreased from 1.767 to 0.376, with the bit error rate varying from 4.6E-2 to 2.4E-4. Moreover, it was used for the first FSO transmission of 5G floating base station signals on an airship platform.

Abstract: The complete mitogenome of Metisotoma macnamarai (Folsom ) (Collembola, Isotomidae), a member of obligatory predaceous genus Metisotoma Maynard, , was sequenced. It has a length of 15,177 bp, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. The mitogenome has the following base composition: A = 37.1%, T = 33.3%, G = 11.8%, and C = 17.4%. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood (ML) indicates that M. macnamarai clusters as sister taxon to the genus Isotomurus, with high statistical support.

Abstract: An average bit error ratio (ABER) performance model for multiple phase shift keying (MPSK) based on a balanced detector with a fiber is presented in the free-space link for the first time. The Johnson SB probability distribution function (pdf), to the best of our knowledge, is first experimentally explored, which can be used to describe the fading characteristics of an optical signal coupled into a single-mode fiber (SMF) in an atmospheric turbulence channel. Subsequently, an ABER expression is established by combining the photon characteristics of the balanced detector with the fiber. The numerical results show that the system has the most superior ABER performance when the splitting ratio is 0.5 and the quantum efficiency of the two photodetectors is equal. Moreover, the communication performances can be optimized by adjusting parameters, such as increasing the system bandwidth, selecting the appropriate modulation order, and improving the received optical power. Finally, the MPSK-signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) model is also studied to evaluate system communication performance. Through our asymptotic analysis, if the required ABER falls below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10-3, the SNR should maintain at least 38 dB or more, while the normalized fluctuation variance deteriorates to 5.2441. This paper provides a parameter reference for designing the MPSK free-space optical (FSO) communication system, especially the fiber-coupling receiver.

Abstract: Collembola are a basal group of Hexapoda renowned for both unique morphological characters and significant ecological roles. However, a robust and plausible phylogenetic relationship between its deeply divergent lineages has yet to be achieved. We carried out a mitophylogenomic study based on a so far the most comprehensive mitochondrial genome dataset. Our data matrix contained mitogenomes of 31 species from almost all major families of all four orders, with 16 mitogenomes newly sequenced and annotated. We compared the linear arrangements of genes along mitochondria across species. Then we conducted 13 analyses each under a different combination of character coding, partitioning scheme and heterotachy models, and assessed their performance in phylogenetic inference. Several hypothetical tree topologies were also tested. Mitogenomic structure comparison revealed that most species share the same gene order of putative ancestral pancrustacean pattern, while seven species from Onychiuridae, Poduridae and Symphypleona bear different levels of gene rearrangements, indicating phylogenetic signals. Tomoceroidea was robustly recovered for the first time in the presence of all its families and subfamilies. Monophyly of Onychiuroidea was supported using unpartitioned models alleviating LBA. Paronellidae was revealed polyphyletic with two subfamilies inserted independently into Entomobryidae. Although Entomobryomorpha has not been well supported, more than half of the analyses obtained convincing topologies by placing Tomoceroidea within or near remaining Entomobryomorpha. The relationship between elongate-shaped and spherical-shaped collembolans still remained ambiguous, but Neelipleona tend to occupy the basal position in most trees. This study showed that mitochondrial genomes could provide important information for reconstructing the relationships among Collembola when suitable analytical approaches are implemented. Of all the data refining and model selecting schemes used in this study, the combination of nucleotide sequences, partitioning model and exclusion of third codon positions performed better in generating more reliable tree topology and higher node supports than others.

Abstract: Optical communication has a broad prospect in deep space communication. The mechanism and the asymptotic dark count estimate of superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) are introduced. Considering the detector bias current, an average bit error expression is established based on SNSPD and pulse position modulation optical communication system over Double Generalized Gamma channel firstly. Numerical results show that both the bias current and the atmospheric turbulence intensity have influence on the BER performance. The uncoded BER can achieve 10-5 in 32-PPM scheme with Ibias/Iv = 0.85 when SNR = 8 dB under weak atmospheric turbulence. This work can be utilized in deep space optical communication and benefits downlink communication system design.

Abstract: One of the major restrictions of the free-space optical communication systems is the limitation of single-mode fiber (SMF) coupling efficiency that impacts the system performance. In this paper, an adaptive coupling method for optical communication system based on coarse-fine laser nutation technique was presented. The scanning strategy and algorithm were set up and experimentally examined. The experimental results demonstrate that the coarse-fine laser nutation technique is capable of achieving a good coupling efficiency even the beam spot and the SMF do not coincide with each other at the start. The SMF center calculation accuracy of coarse and fine scanning stage were 0.25 and 0.01 μm, respectively. And the average coupling efficiency of the system can increase from 0.351 in open loop to 0.624 in closed loop under a simulated atmospheric turbulence condition, the offset compensation error was 0.1245 μm when turbulence induced. Finally, some factors influencing the systems were also discussed.

Abstract: A 128 Gbit/s free-space laser link demonstration has been presented. We use a simulated atmosphere system with a tunable 1 km equivalent weak turbulence channel. Eye diagrams and constellation diagrams were observed. Bit error rate curves of back to back transmission and that in a simulated atmospheric channel are measured. The results show that the receiving sensitivities can be better than -37.3 dBm at the rate of 128 Gbit/s in a turbulence channel. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that the transmission performance of high speed space laser in a tunable atmospheric channel is studied.

Abstract: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease resulting from dysregulated lipid metabolism is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism. Knockouts in lipid-metabolizing proteins including ApoE in multiple model organisms such as mice and rats exhibiting elevated levels of cholesterol have been widely used for dissecting the pathology of atherosclerosis, but few of these animal models exhibit advanced atherosclerotic plaques leading to ischemia-induced clinical symptoms, limiting their use for translational studies. Here we report hypercholesterolemia and severe atherosclerosis characterized by stenosis and occlusion of arteries, together with clinical manifestations of stroke and gangrene, in ApoE knockout dogs generated by CRISPR/Cas9 and cloned by somatic cell nuclear transfer technologies. Importantly, the hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerotic complications in F0 mutants are recapitulated in their offspring. As the ApoE-associated atherosclerosis and clinical manifestations in mutant dogs are more similar to that in human patients compared with those in other animal models, these mutant dogs will be invaluable in developing and evaluating new therapies, including endovascular procedures, against atherosclerosis and related disorders.

Abstract: Rapid urbanization profoundly affects global biodiversity. How urbanization modifies soil biodiversity and perturbs nematodes remains limited. Here, we investigated soil nematodes in four land-use types: Parks, residential areas, natural forests, and maize fields across 12 cities in China. Urban parks and surrounding forests had similar nematode richness exceeding that in urban residential areas and surrounding farmlands. Nematode communities in parks and residential areas were, however, more homogenous than in forests and farmlands. Variations in nematode assemblages in both core urban and urban surroundings were mainly due to taxa replacement, indicating that nematodes were spatially isolated in cities. Urban residential areas were colonized by the lowest number of specialists (i.e., with narrow niche width) and smaller body sizes. Urban parks, conversely, served as hotspots for soil nematodes in cities. Together, our results indicate that urbanization processes reduce nematode diversity, with e.g., 30% loss in residential areas compared to forests, and homogenize soil nematode communities.

Abstract: The data transmission between 5G floating base stations will be an important application area of the free space optical (FSO) link, but the problem of atmospheric disturbance will directly affect the application effect. An atmospheric turbulence suppression algorithm based on avalanche photodiode adaptive gain control (APDAGC) for the laser transmission terminal was proposed to suppress atmospheric turbulence. The given design mechanism and experimental results demonstrate its function to improve the performance of FSO. When APDAGC is over 1 km FSO, the variance of intensity fluctuation is lowered from 0.046 to 0.009, with the bit error rate reduced from 4.82E-6 to 1E-12. Comparatively, as APDAGC is over 6.5 km FSO, the variance of intensity fluctuation is decreased from 1.767 to 0.376, with the bit error rate varying from 4.6E-2 to 2.4E-4. Moreover, it was used for the first FSO transmission of 5G floating base station signals on an airship platform.

49. Generation of temporal fading envelope sequences for the FSOC channel based on atmospheric turbulence optical parameters

Abstract: The temporal characteristics of the free space optical communication (FSOC) turbulence fading channel are essential for analyzing the bit error rate (BER) performances and compiling the rationale of adaptive signal processing algorithms. However, the investigation is still limited since the majority of temporal sequence generation fails to combine the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the FSOC system parameters, and using the simplified formula results in the loss of detailed information for turbulence disturbances. In this paper, considering the ACF of engineering measurable atmospheric parameters, we propose a continuous-time FSOC channel fading sequence generation model that obeys the Gamma-Gamma (G-G) probability density function (PDF). First, under the influence of parameters such as transmission distance, optical wavelength, scintillation index, and atmospheric structural constant, the normalized channel fading models of ACF and PSD are established, and the numerical solution of the time-domain Gaussian correlation sequence is derived. Moreover, the light intensity generation model obeying the time-domain correlation with statistical distribution information is derived after employing the rank mapping, taking into account the association between the G-G PDF parameters and the large and small scales turbulence fading channels. Finally, the Monte Carlo numerical method is used to analyze the performances of the ACF, PDF, and PSD parameters, as well as the temporal characteristics of the generated sequence, and the matching relationships between these parameters and theory, under various turbulence intensities, propagation distances, and transverse wind speeds. Numerical results show that the proposed temporal sequence generation model highly restores the disturbance information in different frequency bands for the turbulence fading channels, and the agreement with the theoretical solution is 0.999. This study presents essential numerical simulation methods for analyzing and evaluating the temporal properties of modulated signals. When sophisticated algorithms are used to handle FSOC signals, our proposed temporal sequence model can provide communication signal experimental sample data generating techniques under various FSOC parameters, which is a crucial theoretical basis for evaluating algorithm performances.

Abstract: In an all-optical double-hop free-space optical communication system, the outage probability and bit error rate are analyzed using a composite channel. The model involves atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and fiber coupling efficiency. Based on analysis of the channel model and amplifier spontaneous emission noise, the outage probability and bit error rate are obtained. For an all-optical double-hop link, fiber coupling efficiency has an important impact on outage probability, especially at relatively short total link length. By compensating for three terms of wavefront distortions, the system outage probability significantly decreases. The communication performance is further improved by optimizing the receiving aperture diameter and beam width.
