1. Analysis of Electroweak Precision Data and Prospects for Future Improvements

Abstract

We update our previous work on an analysis of the electroweak data by including new and partly preliminary data available up to the 1996 summer conferences. The new results on the Z partial decay widths into b and c hadrons now offer a consistent interpretation of all data in the minimal standard model. The value extracted for the strong interaction coupling constant \alpha_s(mZ) agrees well with determinations in other areas. New constraints on the universal parameters S, T and U are obtained from the updated measurements. No signal of new physics is found in the S,T,U analysis once the SM contributions with mt \sim 175GeV and those of not a too heavy Higgs boson are accounted for. The naive QCD-like technicolor model is now ruled out at the 99%CL even for the minimal model with SU(2)_{TC}. In the absence of a significant new physics effect in the electroweak observables, constraints on masses of the top quark, mt, and Higgs boson, mH, are derived as a function of \alpha_s and the QED effective coupling $\bar{\alpha}(m_Z^2)$. The preferred range of mH depends rather strongly on the actual value of mt: mH<360 GeV for mt=170GeV, while mH>130GeV for mt=180GeV at 95%CL. Prospects due to forthcoming improved measurements of asymmetries, the mass of the weak boson W mW, mt and $\bar{\alpha}(m_Z^2)$ are discussed. Anticipating uncertainties of 0.00020 for $\sbar^2(m_Z^2)$, 20MeV for mW, and 2GeV for mt, the new physics contributions to the S,T,U parameters will be constrained more severely, and, within the SM, the logarithm of the Higgs mass can be constrained to about +-0.35. The better constraints on S,T,U and on mH within the minimal SM should be accompanied with matching precision in $\bar{\alpha}(m_Z^2)$., Comment: 48 pages, Latex, uses axodraw.sty, 32 Postscript figures, to be published in Z.Phys.C

Abstract

The European physical journal / C 77(4), 215(2017). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-017-4717-9, A precision measurement of jet cross sections in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering for photon virtualities $5.5 < Q^{2} < $80GeV$^2$ and inelasticities 0.2 < y < 0.6 is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 290pb$^{−1}$. Double-differential inclusive jet, dijet and trijet cross sections are measured simultaneously and are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum observables and as a function of Q$^2$. Jet cross sections normalised to the inclusive neutral current DIS cross section in the respective Q$^2$-interval are also determined. Previous results of inclusive jet cross sections in the range 150 < Q$^2$ < 15,000GeV$^2$ are extended to low transverse jet momenta 5 < $P^{jet}_{T}$ < 7GeV. The data are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, in approximate next-to-next-to-leading order and in full next-to-next-to-leading order. Abstract

A first measurement is presented of exclusive photoproduction of $\rho^0$ mesons associated with leading neutrons at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years $2006$ and $2007$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $1.16$ pb$^{-1}$. The $\rho^0$ mesons with transverse momenta $p_T0.35$, are detected in the Forward Neutron Calorimeter. The phase space of the measurement is defined by the photon virtuality $Q^2 < 2$ GeV$^2$, the total energy of the photon-proton system $20 < W_{\gamma p} < 100$ GeV and the polar angle of the leading neutron $\theta_n < 0.75$ mrad. The cross section of the reaction $\gamma p \to \rho^0 n \pi^+$ is measured as a function of several variables. The data are interpreted in terms of a double peripheral process, involving pion exchange at the proton vertex followed by elastic photoproduction of a $\rho^0$ meson on the virtual pion. In the framework of one-pion-exchange dominance the elastic cross section of photon-pion scattering, $\sigma^{\rm el}(\gamma\pi^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+)$, is extracted. Abstract

Signals of QCD instanton-induced processes are searched for in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering at the electron-proton collider HERA in the kinematic region defined by the Bjorken-scaling variable $x > 10^{-3}$, the inelasticity $0.2< y < 0.7$ and the photon virtuality $150 < Q^2 < 15000$ GeV$^2$. The search is performed using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~$351$ pb$^{-1}$. No evidence for the production of QCD instanton-induced events is observed. Upper limits on the cross section for instanton-induced processes between $1.5$~pb and $6$~pb, at $95\%$~ confidence level, are obtained depending on the kinematic domain in which instantons could be produced. Abstract

Berlin : Springer (2016)., A precision measurement of jet cross sections in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering for photon virtualities $\it 5.5 < Q^{72} < 80GeV^{2}$ and inelasticities $\it 0.2 < y < 0.6$ is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $290 pb^{−1}$. Double-differential inclusive jet, dijet and trijet cross sections are measured simultaneously and are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum observables and as a function of $\it Q^{2}$. Jet cross sections normalised to the inclusive neutral current DIS cross section in the respective $\it Q^{2}$-interval are also determined. Previous results of inclusive jet cross sections in the range $\it 150 < Q^{2} < 15 000GeV^{2}$ are extended to low transverse jet momenta $\it 5 < P^{jet}_{T} < 7GeV$. The data are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, in approximate next-to-next-to-leading orderand in full next-to-next-to-leading order. Abstract

In the framework of SU(2)(X)U(1) gauge models a parity-conserving neutral current would yield equal pi /sup 0/ production in muonless neutrino and antineutrino events. A combined analysis of single- pi /sup 0/ production in nu and nu interactions is presented. The two experiments were performed with the bubble chamber Gargamelle filled with a light propane-freon mixture and exposed to the CERN PS nu and nu beams. (4 refs).

Abstract

About 200 and 60 candidates for electron neutrino and antineutrino interactions, respectively, have been analyzed in the heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the CERN PS neutrino beam. Evidence for scaling has been found for these interactions, with slopes of the cross sections in good agreement with those obtained for muon neutrino and antineutrino events in the same chamber. No evidence appears for oscillations of neutrinos or antineutrinos, which would induce in the present experiment an excess of electron or positron events. The corresponding limits are given as functions of the mixing parameter, for the finite mass Majorana neutrinos. The possibility of a multiplicative law for the lepton number has also been investigated. (22 refs).

Abstract

A sample of 357 events fitting the reaction ν + p → μ- + p + π+ on free proton is obtained from the Gargamelle neutrino propane experiment at the CERN-PS. The average value of the cross section above 1 GeV is found to be (0.60 ± 0.07) 10-38 cm2. The reaction is dominated by the production of the Δ++(1232) resonance. Abstract

The first measurement of the neutral current inelastic cross-section ratio σ(ν + n → v + .)/σ(ν + p →v + .) is presented. It is based on a sample of 573 neutral current events from the Gargamelle propane experiment using the CERN-PS neutrino beam. The ratio is found to be 0.76 -0.15 +0.17. The relative contributions of reactions on neutrons and protons are estimated from the charge and proton multiplicity distributions. Abstract

Events induced by neutral particles and producing only hadrons, but no muon or electron, have been observed in the heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to neutrino (v) and antineutrino (v) beams at CERN. A study of the various sources which could give rise to such events reveals that less than 20% could be attributed to neutrons or KL°. The events behave as expected if they arise from neutral current processes induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos. Abstract

A sample of K+ mesons stopped in the CERN 1.1-m3 heavy-liquid bubble chamber has been used to study the Dalitz-plot density and the μ+ polarization in Kμ3+ decay and to measure the Kμ3+ and Ke3+ branching ratios. All three analyses are described in detail, and they are used, separately and combined, to study the form of the strangeness-changing, semileptonic weak interaction. This is found to be consistent with a coupling of vector currents and to be invariant under time reversal. The vector form factors are studied with a wide range of assumptions as to their possible four-momentum (q2) dependence, and the results of all three measurements are in agreement. If λ+ is fixed at 0.029 (the average value from Ke3+ experiments) and if ξ is assumed to be independent of q2, then the result is ξ=-0.65±0.13. Assuming that f+(q2) and ξ(q2) are both linear functions of q2, a three-parameter fit gives λ+=0.060±0.019, ξ(0)=-1.0±0.5, and ξ(5.1mπ2)=-0.97±0.20. © 1971 The American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

One possible event of the process ν-μ + e- → v-μ + e- has been observed. The various background processes are discussed and the event interpreted in terms of the Weinberg theory.
