This permits to tune the quality factor of the guided mode and of the resonant absorption over at least four orders of magnitude. Nous proposons une stratégie polyvalente basée sur un contraste d'indice diélectrique pour contrôler les pertes dissipatives dans les métaux au sein des guides d'ondes et des nanostructures résonantes. Cela permet de régler le facteur de qualité du mode guidé et de l'absorption résonante sur au moins quatre ordres de grandeur. Ce concept est appliqué à une conception pratique qui permet de contrôler finement la localisation de la dissipation dans une structure photonique absorbante.

International audience; Looking for a perfect metallic behavior is a crucial research line for metamaterials scientists. This paper outlines a versatile strategy based on a contrast of dielectric index to control dissipative losses in metal within waveguides and resonant nanostructures. This permits us to tune the quality factor of the guided mode and of the resonance over a large range, up to eight orders of magnitude, and over a broad spectral band, from visible to millimeter waves. An interpretation involving a low-loss equivalent model for the metal is developed. The latter is based on a Drude model, in which the dissipative parameter can reach very low values, which amounts to a nearly perfect metallic behavior. Finally, this concept is applied to a practical design that permits us to finely control the localization of dissipation in an absorbing photonic structure.; La recherche d'un comportement métallique parfait est un axe de recherche crucial pour les scientifiques spécialisés dans les métamatériaux. Cet article présente une stratégie polyvalente basée sur un contraste d'indice diélectrique pour contrôler les pertes dissipatives dans le métal au sein des guides d'ondes et des nanostructures résonantes. Cela nous permet de régler le facteur de qualité du mode guidé et de la résonance sur une large gamme, jusqu'à huit ordres de grandeur, et sur une large bande spectrale, du visible aux ondes millimétriques. Une interprétation impliquant un modèle équivalent à faible perte pour le métal est développée. Ce dernier est basé sur un modèle de Drude, dans lequel le paramètre dissipatif peut atteindre des valeurs très faibles, ce qui revient à un comportement métallique presque parfait. Enfin, ce concept est appliqué à une conception pratique qui nous permet de contrôler finement la localisation de la dissipation dans une structure photonique absorbante.

International audience; Surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) make possible, thanks to plasmonics nanoantennas, the detection of low quantities of biological and chemical materials. Here, we investigate the infrared response of 2,4-dinitrotoluene deposited on various arrays of closely arranged metal-insulator-metal (MIM) resonators and experimentally show how the natural dispersion of the complex refractive index leads to an intertwined combination of SEIRA and SPR effect that can be leveraged to identify molecules. They are shown to be efficient for SEIRA spectroscopy and allows detecting of the dispersive explosive material, 2,4-dinitrotoluene. By changing the in-plane parameters, a whole spectral range of absorptions of 2,4-DNT is scanned. These results open the way to the design of sensors based on SEIRA and SPR combined effects, without including a spectrometer.; La spectroscopie d'absorption infrarouge renforcée de surface (SEIRA) et la résonance plasmonique de surface (SPR) permettent, grâce aux nano-antennes plasmoniques, de détecter de faibles quantités de matériaux biologiques et chimiques. Ici, nous étudions la réponse infrarouge du 2,4-dinitrotoluène déposé sur divers réseaux de résonateurs métal-isolant-métal (MIM) étroitement disposés, et nous montrons expérimentalement comment la dispersion naturelle des indices de réfraction complexes conduit à une combinaison entrelacée de l'effet SEIRA et de la SPR qui peut être exploitée pour identifier des molécules. Ils se sont avérés efficaces pour la spectroscopie SEIRA et permettent de détecter la matière explosive dispersive, le 2,4-dinitrotoluène. En modifiant les paramètres dans le plan, une gamme spectrale complète d'absorptions de 2,4-DNT est balayée. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie à la conception de capteurs basés sur les effets combinés SEIRA et SPR, sans inclure un spectromètre.

International audience; Ultra narrow-band absorbing surfaces answer a growing demand of precise control of absorption spectra. Starting from a design of guided mode resonator (GMR), we present here a versatile architecture presenting resonances of very high quality factors (up to 10 000) and spectrally adjustable. This design uses multiple slices of dielectrics to focus resonating field in the middle of a metallic waveguide, diminishing its extension in the metal and thus the loss rate of the propagating mode.; Les surfaces absorbantes à bande ultra étroite répondent à une demande croissante de spectre d'absorption finement contrôlés. Partant d'une conception de résonateur de mode guidé (GMR), nous présentons ici une architecture polyvalente présentant des résonances de très fort facteurs de qualité (jusqu'à 10 000) et ajustables spectralement. Cette conception utilise plusieurs couches de diélectrique pour concentrer le champ de résonance au milieu d'un guide d'ondes métallique, diminuant ainsi sa pénétration dans le métal et donc le taux de perte du mode de propagation.

International audience; Since the work of Federico Capasso in 2011 [1], metasurfaces for optics, or how to structure a surface to provide optical properties (focusing, deflection, dispersion, etc.), have been proposed for numerous applications. The function of an optical component is determined by the local modification it induces on an incident electromagnetic field. The goal is to control the phase of a transmitted or reflected field by texturing the matter at the sub-wavelength scale and minimizing the influence on the amplitude (at least in the spectral band of interest). A solution to this problem is the use of MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) nano-antennas [2], which consists in metallic rods deposited on a layer of transparent material itself deposited on a metal mirror. Such a structure can only work in reflection because of the metallic mirror and behaves like an horizontal Fabry-Perot resonator whose resonance is controlled mainly by the length of the rod and which is accompanied by a significant phase jump up to 2π. Here we use two properties of these structures, the chromaticism induced by the resonance and the interaction surface which is greater than the geometrical surface of the nano-rod [3], to combine the different dimensions of nano-antennas locally in order to create two optical functions on the same surface. Our proposed structure is illustrated in figure (a), it deflects the incident beam at 3μm in one direction and the one at 5μm in the opposite direction. This prism is composed of four periodic areas, each of them adding a π/2 delay to the previous one by modifying the length of antennas. As shown in figure (b) these nano-antennas create two opposite phase ramps at two different wavelengths. This is possible thanks to the chromaticism of MIM structures and the fact that they interact with the light included in an effective section much larger than their dimensions. As we can see on figure (c) the phase response of a given structure varies with the wavelength. We use the fact that when the resonance is localized at 5μm (respectively at 3μm) the introduced phase at 3μm (respectively at 5μm) is negligible. That is to say that the three smallest patterns will modify locally the phases at 3μm only and the three greatest patterns will do the same for 5μm only. This dual prism paves the way to the creation of more complicated dual optical functions metasurfaces. The authors acknowledge the financial support from a DGA-MRIS scholarship.
