Abstract Background Recombinant human Interleukin receptor antagonist (rhIL-Ra) can bind to the IL-1 receptor on the cell membrane and reversibly blocks the proinflammatory signaling pathway. However, its effect on allergic rhinitis (AR) and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (rhIL-1Ra) on AR guinea pigs. Methods Guinea pigs were systemically sensitized by intraperitoneal injection and topical intranasal instillation with ovalbumin within 21 days. Animals administrated with saline served as the normal control. The AR animals were randomly divided into the model group and distinct concentrations of rhIL-1Ra and budesonide treatment groups. IL-1β and ovalbumin specific IgE levels were detected by ELISA kits. Nasal mucosa tissues were stained with hematoxylin & eosin (HE) for histological examination. Results It was found that the numbers of sneezing and nose rubbing were remarkably reduced in rhIL-1Ra and budesonide-treated guinea pigs. Besides, rhIL-1Ra distinctly alleviated IgE levels in serum and IL-1β levels in nasal mucus, together with decreased exfoliation of epithelial cells, eosinophilic infiltration, tissue edema and vascular dilatation. Conclusions rhIL-1Ra is effective in AR guinea pigs and may provide a novel potential choice for AR treatments.

The working temperature is one of the key factors affecting the efficiency and safety performance of automotive power batteries. Current battery pack design primarily focuses on single layout configurations, overlooking the potential impact of mixed arrangements on thermal management performance. This study presents a module-based optimization methodology for comprehensive concept design of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack. Firstly, the arrangement modules is optimized and performed using particle swarm optimization algorithms considering various arrangement layout (i.e. rectangular, diamond, and staggered arrangements) by taking the intercell spacing and maximum temperature of the modules as design objectives. Secondly, the battery pack configuration design is performed employing a neural network model reflect diverse battery module configurations within the pack, exploring their impact on thermal management performance. The hybrid battery arrangement effectively improves thermal management, and the module spacing helps to enhance heat dissipation. The staggered arrangement has a greater impact on the heat dissipation performance of the battery pack, but the spacing between different modules varies with the position of the modules. When all configuration schemes are staggered modules, the optimal range of the spacing between modules is between 6 and 7 mm. However, the study observes a non-linear relationship between module spacing and the maximum temperature difference within the battery pack. While increasing module spacing initially decreases temperature differences, it eventually reverses, suggesting that spacing alone may not consistently enhance thermal management. Validation with a lithium-ion battery pack case study demonstrates the method’s effectiveness, providing valuable knowledge for future cell and pack designs that employ different battery cell arrangements and diverse cooling strategies.

The occurrence of a sharp turn along the upper course of the Yangtze River is referred to as the “Great Bend” and represents a large-scale drainage reorganization in response to the surface rise of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the timing and mechanism of the formation of the Great Bend remain disputed. In this paper, we report new (U–Th)/He and apatite fission track thermochronological data from the deep river valley in the Great Bend area of the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Compared with the adjacent Jianchuan Basin, two phases of younger rapid cooling for the Great Bend area are identified based on thermal-history modeling, namely, Miocene (ca. 17 to 11–8 Ma) and Quaternary, with the former phase being contemporaneous with the formation of the anticline in the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Progressive increases in the normalized channel steepness (ksn) and the degree of river-valley incision with increasing distance downstream for tributaries of the Yangtze River in the Tiger Leaping Gorge indicate that river rerouting and formation of the Great Bend occurred during the Miocene. Samples located at the bottom of the Tiger Leaping Gorge also reveal a phase of rapid cooling since ca. 1.9 Ma, with an exhumation rate of 1.5 ± 0.2 mm/year. We hypothesize that enhanced Quaternary exhumation in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau occurred mainly within the narrow region between the Sichuan Basin and the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis, corresponding to an episode of widespread extensional deformation superimposed above middle- to upper-crustal flexure in this region.

Abstract Whether tectonic strain from the early stage India‐Asia collision has synchronously affected the far‐field margin of the Tibetan Plateau is crucial for understanding plateau deformation and growth processes. However, direct evidence for early far‐field deformation remains scarce. Utilizing illite K‐Ar dating of three fault gouge samples, we established the faulting history of the Leibo fault zone (LFZ) at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (SEMTP). Consistent authigenic illite ages of 52 ± 2, 54 ± 12 and 55 ± 6 Ma suggest the reactivated thrust faulting of the LFZ in the Early Cenozoic. Positioned ∼700 km east of the collisional boundary and at the intersection of three blocks with distinct lithospheric rheology in strength/viscosity, this event suggests a quasi‐synchronous far‐field tectonic response in the SEMTP to the India‐Asia collision.

Design solution space (DSS) exploration is a pivotal process for comprehending design challenges and identifying diverse solution alternatives based on varying requirements. Computer-aided design (CAD) approaches, such as parametric design, knowledge-based design, and generative design, have proven successful in DSS exploration. However, a comparative study evaluating their performance is lacking in the technical literature. This paper addresses this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of these approaches regarding their performance in exploring DSS. The research begins by providing an overview of parametric design, knowledge-based design, and generative design, establishing the foundation for the study. Six evaluation criteria are identified based on the DSS exploration process. A qualitative analysis is then conducted, considering these criteria, to objectively assess the performance of each modeling approach. The results highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, revealing that DSS exploration success is directly tied to the quantity of implemented knowledge. The results also emphasize the complementarity of those approaches, as their strengths and weaknesses are based on different problem-solving logics, demonstrating the synergy that can be achieved through strategic combinations of them. Additionally, the paper discusses open issues related to DSS exploration, contributing valuable insights for future developments in this field.

Underwater vision technology is crucial for marine exploration, aquaculture, and environmental monitoring. However, the challenging underwater conditions, including light attenuation, color distortion, reduced contrast, and blurring, pose difficulties. Current deep learning models and traditional image enhancement techniques are limited in addressing these challenges, making it challenging to acquire high-quality underwater image signals. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an approach called adaptive multi-scale multi-color space underwater image enhancement with GAN-physics fusion (AMSMC-UGAN). AMSMC-UGAN leverages multiple color spaces (RGB, HSV, and Lab) for feature extraction, compensating for RGB’s limitations in underwater environments and enhancing the use of image information. By integrating a membership degree function to guide deep learning based on physical models, the model’s performance is improved across different underwater scenes. In addition, the introduction of a multi-scale feature extraction module deepens the granularity of image information, learns the degradation distribution of different image information of the same image content more comprehensively, and provides useful guidance for more comprehensive data for image enhancement. AMSMC-UGAN achieved maximum scores of 26.04 dB, 0.87, and 3.2004 for PSNR, SSIM, and UIQM metrics, respectively, on real and synthetic underwater image datasets. Additionally, it obtained gains of at least 6.5%, 6%, and 1% for these metrics. Empirical evaluations on real and artificially distorted underwater image datasets demonstrate that AMSMC-GAN outperforms existing techniques, showcasing superior performance with enhanced quantitative metrics and strong generalization capabilities.

Abstract Background The bacterial genus Bacillus, an important group of bacteria which can suppress phytopathogens, has been widely used in agriculture. However, different species of Bacillus often displayed significant differences in probiotic efficiency and mechanism, suggesting that it is very necessary to investigate the biocontrol potential of new Bacillus isolates, especially from under-evaluated Bacillus spp. Rehmannia glutinosa (R. glutinosa), an important traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is affected by a serious root-rot disease caused by the fungus Fusarium solani (F. solani). Biocontrol agents against this root-rot disease in R. glutinosa have yet to be developed. This study explored, for the first time, the activity and biocontrol mechanism of a new Bacillus isolate, Bacillus tequilensis A13, in antagonizing F. solani. Results B. tequilensis A13 displayed a strong inhibitory activity (73.49% ± 1.33%) against F. solani growth in vitro and was able to survive and multiply in the sterilized soil. The results from liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and Gene Ontology (GO) analyses indicated that B. tequilensis A13 cell-free supernatant contained six antifungal compounds, eight antifungal compound synthases, and several functional proteins involved in the processes of plant stress resistance, etc. Finally, the joint application of complex fertilizer together with B. tequilensis A13 significantly reduced the incidence of R. glutinosa root rot in the field. Conclusion B. tequilensis A13 strongly inhibited F. solani growth by producing antifungal compounds and proteins associated with plant stress resistance/tolerance, and proved to be a promising candidate biocontrol agent against R. glutinosa root-rot disease. Lightweight and adaptive adjustment are key research directions for deep neural networks (DNNs). In coal industry mining, frequent changes in raw coal sources and production batches can cause uneven distribution of appearance features, leading to concept drift problems. The network architecture and parameters should be adjusted frequently to avoid a decline in model accuracy. This poses a significant challenge for those without specialist expertise. Although the Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has a strong ability to automatically generate networks, enabling the automatic design of highly accurate networks, it often comes with complex internal topological connections. These redundant architectures do not always effectively improve network performance, especially in resource-constrained environments, where their computational efficiency is significantly reduced. In this paper, we propose a method called Topology Complexity Neural Architecture Search (TCNAS). TCNAS proposes a new method for evaluating the topological complexity of neural networks and uses both topological complexity and accuracy to guide the search, effectively obtaining lightweight and efficient networks. TCNAS employs an adaptive shrinking search space optimization method, which gradually eliminates poorly performing cells to reduce the search space, thereby improving search efficiency and solving the problem of space explosion. In the classification experiments of coal and gangue, the optimal network designed by TCNAS has an accuracy of 83.3%. And its structure is much simpler, which is about 1/53 of the parameters of the network dedicated to coal and gangue recognition. Experiments have shown that TCNAS is able to generate networks that are both efficient and simple for resource-constrained industrial applications.

In the context of the continuous increase in global grain production, accompanied by a large amount of investment in various pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other chemical pesticides. It has caused inevitable environmental problems and food safety problems. Current research suggests that the use of cyclodextrins and their derivatives to protect pesticides can significantly reduce the number of agrochemicals that pollute the environment. Using the cavity properties of cyclodextrins, we can refer to the similar way in which drug molecules make cyclodextrins and cyclodextrin polymers to form inclusion compounds. Overall, β-cyclodextrin and its derivatives are used as a new pesticide excipient to improve the stability of pesticides, prevent their oxidation and decomposition, improve the solubility and bioavailability of pesticides, reduce the toxic side effects of drugs, and mask the odour of drugs. In this review, we focus on summarising the recent research progress of β-cyclodextrins and their derivatives in pesticides and other fields, and provide a systematic classification of β-cyclodextrin polymers, as well as new synthesis methods and techniques in various applications. Finally, the future development of cyclodextrin-like polymers is foreseen, and issues arising from the research are discussed and addressed in depth.

Background: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common postoperative complication in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism through which metformin improves postoperative cognitive function. Methods: In the in vivo experiment, 18-month-old Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 12 in each group): the control, metformin, operation, and operation plus metformin groups. The animals were pretreated with metformin by gavage once daily for two weeks. The Morris water maze (MWM) was used to measure cognitive ability. In the in vitro experiment, BV2 cells were divided into five groups: the control, metformin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), LPS plus metformin, and LPS plus metformin plus compound C groups. We stimulated microglia with LPS (500 ng/mL). Immunofluorescence and Western blotting were used to assess ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels, autophagy-associated protein levels and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/regulator factor 2-related enzyme 1 (SIRT1) signaling pathway activity in the rat cortex and microglial cells. Results: In the MWM test, the metformin-pretreated rats spent a higher proportion of time in the target quadrant. Immunofluorescence showed that the fluorescence intensity of LC3 in the cortex was increased in rats pretreated with metformin. Western blotting indicated that metformin upregulated the expression of autophagy-related and AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway-related proteins in the cortex after surgery. By activating the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway in vitro, metformin reduced microglial activation and oxidative stress and promoted autophagy. Conclusions: Through the AMPK/SIRT1 pathway, metformin can boost autophagy and reduce oxidative stress in cortical microglia in older rats, in turn improving postoperative cognitive function.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the clinical effects of different dosages of dexmedetomidine (Dex) combined with a target-controlled infusion of propofol in hysteroscopic submucosal myomectomy.MethodsNinety patients who underwent hysteroscopic submucosal myomectomy between September 2021 and March 2022 were enrolled and randomly divided into three groups, with 30 patients in each group. Patients in Groups A, B, and C received injections of 0.25, 0.5, or 0.75 µg/kg of Dex, respectively, by intravenous pump over 10 min. After this time, a maintenance dosage of 0.5 µg/kg/h was administered by intravenous infusion until the end of the surgery. Anesthesia was induced using 1.5 mg/kg of propofol and 0.3 µg/kg of sufentanil that were introduced through a laryngeal mask. The plasma concentration of propofol was maintained at 3 µg/ml by target-controlled infusion until the end of the surgery. The mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and electroencephalographic bispectral index (BIS) were observed when the patient entered the operating room (T0), after catheter indwelling for anesthesia (T1), at the time of cervical dilation (T2), at the time of hysteroscopic surgery (T3), and at the end of the surgery (T4) in all three groups. The total dosage of propofol for induction and maintenance, anesthesia awakening time, orientation recovery time, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score of the post-awakening uterine contraction pain, and adverse reactions were recorded.ResultsThe intraoperative reductions of MAP and HR in patients were significant in Group C when compared with those in Groups A and B (P

The light-responsive nanochannel of rhodopsin gained wider research interest from its crucial roles in light-induced biological functions, such as visual signal transduction and energy conversion, though its poor stability and susceptibility to inactivation in vitro have limited its exploration. However, the fabrication of artificial nanochannels with the properties of physical stability, controllable structure, and easy functional modification becomes a biomimetic system to study the stimulus-responsive gating properties. Typically, light-responsive molecules of azobenzene (Azo), retinal, and spiropyran were introduced into nanochannels as photo-switches, which can change the inner surface wettability of nanochannels under the influence of light; this ultimately results in the photoresponsive nature of biomimetic nanochannels. Furthermore, the fine-tuning of their stimulus-responsive properties can be achieved through the introduction of host–guest systems generally combined with a non-covalent bond, and the assembling process is reversible. These host–guest systems have been introduced into the nanochannels to form different functions. Based on the host–guest system of light-responsive reversible interaction, it can not only change the internal surface properties of the nanochannel and control the recognition and transmission behaviors but also realize the controlled release of a specific host or guest molecules in the nanochannel. At present, macrocyclic host molecules have been introduced into nanochannels including pillararenes, cyclodextrin (CD), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). They are introduced into the nanochannel through chemical modification or host–guest assemble methods. Based on the changes in the light-responsive structure of azobenzene, spiropyran, retinal, and others with macrocycle host molecules, the surface charge and hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the nanochannel were changed to regulate the ionic and molecular transport. In this study, the development of photoresponsive host and guest-assembled nanochannel systems from design to application is reviewed, and the research prospects and problems of this photo-responsive nanochannel membrane are presented.

The Pamir salient is a key part of the Himalayan–Tibetan Plateau orogenic system and has undergone intense tectonic deformation during the India–Asian collision. Delineating the Cenozoic kinematics and geodynamics of the Pamir salient requires a comprehensive understanding of the active arcuate structures along its frontal margin, from the perspective of the multi-spatiotemporal evolution of deformation patterns. Here, we reviewed the deformation rates of the major structures at different timescales, reanalyzed the published Global Positioning System velocities, and examined the present-day seismicity to constrain the kinematics of the Pamir salient since the Late Cenozoic. Integrated with the crustal evolution history during the Middle–Late Cenozoic and the deep structure, we proposed a new model to explain the multi-stage kinematics and associated geodynamics of the Pamir salient. During ∼37–24 Ma, the initial Pamir salient moved northward via radial thrusting that rotated the basins on both sides, which was driven by the continuous compression of the Indian slab after the breakoff of its oceanic part. During ∼23–12 Ma, the gravitational collapse of the Central and South Pamir crusts, which was induced by the breakoff of the continental part of the Indian slab, triggered the extension within the Pamir and foreland-ward movement of the upper crust. The upper crustal materials moved in varying directions due to the differential strength of the foreland areas, transforming the crustal kinematics from radial thrusting into a combination of radial thrusting and transfer faulting. Since the coupling of the Indian and Pamir slabs at ∼12–11 Ma, the deformation propagation towards the forelands accelerated, after which the kinematics of the Pamir salient exhibited asymmetric radial thrusting that has been sustained until the present. The asymmetric radial thrusting was likely driven by the compressive stress effect of the lithospheric basal shear generated by the underthrusting of the cratonic Indian lithosphere, which further led to the rollback of the Pamir slab and the consequent migratory extension in the South Pamir.

Determining the timing of E-W extension across the NS-trending rifts in southern Tibet is key to test the mechanical models of the latest evolution in the collision between India and Asia. We focus on the southern half of the largest of the seven main rifts, the Yadong-Gulu rift (YGR), which, despite being the focus of numerous studies thanks to its easy access, still lacks direct time constraints. Using illite K-Ar ages of fault gouge from the active Yadong normal fault of the YGR, we directly constrain its onset timing at 9 ± 1 Ma. (U-Th)/He dating of the footwall leucogranite reveals a rapid exhumation of the southern YGR since ∼9 Ma, attesting to its onset activity. Such timing is similar to that estimated for the northern half of the YGR at 8 ± 1 Ma, suggesting that the entire YGR formed at approximately the same time. Our synthesis of published initiation ages of the other main rifts in southern Tibet shows that they mostly fall between ∼23 and 8 Ma, suggesting a clear spatial and temporal pattern of old initiation ages to the west and young to the east. In this case, the formation of rifts in southern Tibet is unlikely caused by slab tearing of the underthruting Indian plate or orogenic collapse. Our study supports that E-W extension in Tibetan Plateau is triggered by a combination of eastward propagation of the Karakorum-Jiali fault zone and divergent thrusting along the curved Himalayan arc.

Abstract Background In this study, we aimed to determine whether epidural analgesia affects the indications for intrapartum caesarean delivery, such as foetal distress, dystocia, or maternal request, in nulliparous term women with spontaneous labour (Group 1 in the 10-Group Classification System). Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study and collected data from the electronic medical records of deliveries performed in our institution between 1 January 2017 and 30 June 2017. Women conforming to the criterion of Group 1 according to the 10-Group Classification System were enrolled. We compared labour outcomes between women with and without epidural analgesia and analysed the association between epidural analgesia and indications for caesarean by using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 3212 women met the inclusion criteria, and 2876 were enrolled in the final analyses. Cenozoic collision between the Indian and Asian continents is generally considered as the main driver forming the high Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, it remains hotly debated when and how the relatively flat and highly elevated TP was formed. Here, we present combined analyses of the apatite fission track (AFT) and apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) of 18 granite samples along three steep topographic transects in the central part of the Qiangtang Terrane (QT), TP. The results indicate that the AFT ages of all samples are mostly between 130 Ma and 80 Ma, while the AHe ages range from 80 Ma to 40 Ma. Further thermal history modeling indicates that no significant cooling occurred after 40 Ma for most samples, except those lying close to the Reganpei Co extensional fault in the QT. The results are generally consistent with other low-temperature thermochronological data, as well as structural and sedimentologic data from the QT, suggesting that low relief and the relatively flat topography of the QT were almost completely formed before ∼40 Ma. As both megafossils and pollen had undergone a sharp change from subtropical- to psychro-species, indicating a relatively low elevation (∼2 km) at ∼40 Ma and >2 km uplift during the Oligocene. We use simple one-dimensional isostatic modeling to assess the contribution of convective removal of the lithospheric mantle to the present elevation of the QT. The results suggest that a combined effect of isostatic rebound (≥2 km) and thermal expansion related to asthenosphere upwelling and subsequent crustal base heating (∼0.4 km) led to the final uplift of the QT. Therefore, the QT experienced multiple-stage uplift processes which were controlled by crustal thickening before ∼40 Ma and lithospheric mantle delamination during the Oligocene, respectively.

Abstract The Mn1.95−x Co0.21Ni0.84Sr x O4 (MCNS) (0 ≼ x ≼ 0.15) based negative temperature coefficient (NTC) materials are prepared by co-precipitation method. The replacement of Mn by Sr plays a critical role in controlling the lattice parameter, relative density, microstructure, and electrical properties. The lattice parameter and relative density increase with the increase of Sr content. A small amount of Sr restrains the grain growth and increases the bulk density. Moreover, the room resistivity ρ 25, material constant B 25/50, activation energy E a, and temperature coefficient α values of MCNS ceramics are influenced by the Sr content and ranged in 1535.0–2053.6 Ω·cm, 3654–3709 K, 0.3149–0.3197 eV, and (−4.173%)–(−4.111%), respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results explain the transformation of MCNS ceramics from n- to p-type semiconductors. The conduction could arise from the hopping polaron between Mn3+/Mn4+ and Co2+/Co3+ in the octahedral sites. The impedance data analysis also discusses the conduction mechanism of the MCNS ceramic, whereas grain resistance dominates the whole resistance of the samples. Furthermore, the aging coefficient (ΔR/R) of MCNS ceramics is found to be < 0.2%, which indicates the stable distribution of cations in the spinel. Finally, the MCNS ceramics demonstrate excellent thermal durability with < 1.3% of resistance shift after100 thermal shock cycles.

Gelatin methacryloyl scaffolds with microscale fiber structures own great significance because they can effectively mimic the extracellular matrix environment. Compared with extruding bioprinting, electrospinning technology is more suitable for establishing accurate hydrogel microfibers. However, electrospinning accurate gelatin methacryloyl microfiber remains a big challenge restricted by its bad spinnability. In this paper, polyethylene oxide, which owns promising spinnability, is added into gelatin methacryloyl hydrogel precursor to improve the spinnability of gelatin methacryloyl bioink. A three-dimensional motion platform for electrospinning is designed and built and the spinning process of microfibers under far-electric-field and near-electric-field conditions is systematically studied, respectively. As a result, scaffolds consisted of unordered and ordered microfibers are successfully fabricated under far-electric-field and near-electric field, respectively. In vitro culture experiments of human umbilical vein endothelial cells are carried out using the prepared gelatin methacryloyl microfiber scaffolds. The results show that the cells can easily attach to the microfibers and grow well. Moreover, the gelatin methacryloyl/ polyethylene oxide microfiber scaffold was directly spun on the polycaprolactone mesh scaffold printed by fused modeling printing method. The results showed that the macroscopic ordered and microscopic disordered microfiber scaffold could be successfully established, which could lead to directed cell growth. We believe that this method can effectively solve the problem of hydrogel spinnability and be a powerful tool for various biomedical engineering methods in the future.

The Cenozoic collision between India and Asia promoted the widespread uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, with significant deformation documented in the Pamir Plateau and West Kunlun Mountains. Low-temperature thermochronology and basin provenance analysis have revealed three episodes of rapid deformation and uplift in the Pamir–West Kunlun Mountains during the Cenozoic. However, there is very little low-temperature thermochronology age–elevation relationship (AER) data on fast exhumation events in this area—especially in the West Kunlun Mountains— leading to uncertainty surrounding how these events propagated within and around the mountain range. In this study, we produced an elevation profile across granite located south of Kudi, Xijiang Province, China, to reveal its exhumation history. Apatite fission track AER data show that a rapid exhumation event occurred at ∼26 Ma in the southern West Kunlun Mountains. When combined with published data, we interpret that the initial uplift events related to the India–Asia collision began in the central Pamir, southern West Kunlun, and northern West Kunlun regions during the Late Eocene, Oligocene, and Middle Miocene periods, respectively. Therefore, the Cenozoic northward growth process occurred from south to north around West Kunlun.

The Quxu batholith of the Gangdese magmatic belt, southern Tibet, comprises predominantly Early Eocene calc-alkaline granitoids that feature a variety of types of magmatic microgranular enclaves and dikes. Previous studies have demonstrated that magma mixing played a crucial role in the formation of the Quxu batholith. However, the specific processes responsible for this mixing/hybridization have not been identified. The magmatic microgranular enclaves and dikes preserve a record of this magma mixing, and are therefore an excellent source of information about the processes involved. In this study, mesoscopic and microscopic magmatic structures have been investigated, in combination with analyses of mineral textures and chemical compositions. Texturally, most of the enclaves are microporphyritic, with large crystals such as clinopyroxene, hornblende, and plagioclase in a groundmass of hornblende, plagioclase, and biotite. Two types of enclave swarms can be distinguished: polygenic and monogenic swarms. Composite dikes are observed, and represent an intermediate stage between undisturbed mafic dike and dike-like monogenic enclave swarms. Our results reveal three distinct stages of magma mixing in the Quxu batholith, occurring at depth, during ascent and emplacement, and after emplacement, respectively. At depth, thorough and/or partial mixing occurred between mantle-derived mafic and crust-derived felsic magmas to produce hybrid magma. The mafic magma was generated from the primitive mantle, whereas the felsic end-member was produced by partial melting of the preexisting juvenile crust. Many types of enclaves and host granitoids are thus cogenetic, because all are hybrid products produced by the mixing of the two contrasting magmas in different proportions. In the second stage, segregation and differentiation of the hybrid magma led to the formation of the host granitoids as well as various types of magmatic microgranular enclaves. At this stage, mingling and/or local mixing happened during ascent and emplacement. In the final stage, mafic or hybrid magma was injected into early fractures in the crystallizing and cooling pluton to form dikes. Some dikes remained undisturbed, whereas others experienced local mingling and mixing to form composite dikes and eventually disturbed dike-like monogenic enclave swarms. In summary, our study demonstrates the coupling between magmatic texture and composition in an open-system batholith and highlights the potential of magmatic structures for understanding the magma mixing process.

Stable rheological properties of ceramic ink are a key requirement for inkjet printing (IJP), which should be satisfied in terms of the Reynolds and Weber numbers. In this paper, the reverse microemulsion was introduced for the synthesis of monodispersed nanosized ceramic powders, and the average size was less than 100 nm. A comparison of two different dispersants, i.e., polyacrylic ammonium (PAANH4) and polyacrylic aid (PAA), revealed that the former exerted a good dispersion effect on the ceramic ink. The sedimentation ratio, zeta potential, surface tension, viscosity, and density of the inks were measured, and the Reynolds and Weber numbers, as well as Z value, were calculated. A stable, homogeneous, and high solid loading (20 wt%) ceramic ink could be achieved after aging for a period of 72 h. Finally, the ceramic inks showed the desired printable property in the inkjet printing process. Combining inkjet printing technology with a sintering process, Ni-Mn-O films have the potential to monitor temperature and humidity parameters for intelligent wearable devices.

The Pamir Plateau region of the Northwestern Tibetan Plateau forms a prominent tectonic salient, separating the Tajik and Tarim basins. However, the topographic evolution of the Pamir Plateau remains elusive, despite the key role of this region played in the retreat of the Paratethys Ocean and in aridification across Central Asia. Therefore, the SW Tarim and Tajik basins are prime locations to decipher the geological history of the Pamir Plateau. Here, we present detrital zircon U/Pb and apatite fission-track (DAFT) ages from the Keliyang section of the SW Tarim Basin. DAFT ages show that sediments had three components during the Late Cretaceous and two components since the Oligocene. Detrital zircon U/Pb ages mainly cluster between 400 and 500 Ma during the Late Cretaceous, and coincide with ages of the Songpan-Ganzi and the West Kunlun Mountains. In contrast, detrital zircon U/Pb ages in the Eocene sediments are centered at around 200–300 Ma and 40–70 Ma, with a peak at ∼45 Ma, consistent with data from the Central Pamir and the West Kunlun Mountains. The ∼45 Ma peak in detrital zircon U/Pb ages since the Eocene indicates a new sedimentary source from the Central Pamir. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) analyses also show that the sedimentary source was closer to the Central Pamir after the Eocene, when compared to the Late Cretaceous. The result shows a clear Eocene provenance change in the Keliyang area. Moreover, this Eocene provenance shift has been detected in previous studies, in both the Tajik and Tarim basins, suggesting that the entire Central Pamir region likely experienced quasi-simultaneous abrupt uplift and paleo-geomorphological changes during the Eocene.

Background Monteggia equivalent lesion represents a group of injury or combined injury patterns that resemble the Monteggia lesion in its presentations and mechanisms. Unlike Monteggia lesions, the equivalent ones, which share vague definitions and mostly occur as sporadic single case reports in the literature, have not been thoroughly reviewed since Bado first proposed the term, especially in the pediatric population. The objective of this review was to elucidate the definition by elaborating on its clinical styles and thus analyzing the mechanism, diagnosis, and management through related literature.Data sources Based on the terms of ‘Monteggia equivalent’, ‘radial neck fracture’ and ‘pediatric’, all of the related literature was searched on the PubMed and Google Scholar search engine.Results The advance of the definitions for pediatric Monteggia equivalent lesion (PMEL) was reviewed. The functional roles of the ulnar and the related mechanism theories in this injury were analyzed. The status of the radiocapitellar joint in this injury was emphasized. According to the previous statements, a new classification model was proposed and proper diagnosis and treatment approaches were suggested.Conclusions PMEL should be defined as an ulnar fracture at any level combined with a proximal radial fracture. According to the status of the radiocapitellar joint, it could be divided into three groups. The occult ulnar bowing and delayed radial head dislocation should be a serious concern of orthopedists. Surgical need is usually warranted. Maintaining the ulnar length and securing the radiocapitellar joint are highly recommended.

Constructing artificial ion channels to mimic biological process is highly demanded but currently artificial ion channels lack robustness. Here the authors report a robust NO-regulated artificial nanochannel based on a spiro ring opening−closing reaction strategy.

Methods in nerve tissue engineering for peripheral nerve regeneration have recently focused on the application of rapid three-dimensional (3D) printing with resorbable and degradable biomaterial ink. The technique aims to design and fabricate nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) to repair large-gap nerve injuries. In this study, Digital light processing (DLP)-based printing of multichannel NGCs for peripheral nerve regeneration by using gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogels was presented. Multichannel NGCs with different inner diameters were successfully fabricated using desired patterns, and optimal printing parameters were investigated. In vitro co-culturing of PC12 cells demonstrated that NGCs supported the survival, proliferation, and migration of neural cells along the longitudinal channel. The results also showed that neural crest stem cells could be induced to differentiate into neurons on fabricated conduits. This method will provide a rapid and accurate manner to fabricate complex NGCs, which can be potentially used to repair peripheral nerves.

Abstract Cenozoic climate cooling at the advent of the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT), ~33.7 Ma ago, was stamped in the ocean by a series of climatic events albeit the impact of this global climatic transition on terrestrial environments is still fragmentary. Yet archival constraints on Late Eocene atmospheric circulation are scarce in (tropical) monsoonal Asia, and the paucity of terrestrial records hampers a meaningful comparison of the long-term climatic trends between oceanic and continental realms. Here we report new sedimentological data from the Jianchuan basin (SE Tibet) arguing for wetter climatic conditions in monsoonal Asia at ~35.5 Ma almost coevally to the aridification recognized northwards in the Xining basin. We show that the occurrence of flash-flood events in semi-arid to sub-humid palustrine-sublacustrine settings preceded the development of coal-bearing deposits in swampy-like environments, thus paving the way to a more humid climate in SE Tibet ahead from the EOT. We suggest that this moisture redistribution possibly reflects more northern and intensified ITCZ-induced tropical rainfall in monsoonal Asia around 35.5 Ma, in accordance with recent sea-surface temperature reconstructions from equatorial oceanic records. Our findings thus highlight an important period of climatic upheaval in terrestrial Asian environments ~2–4 millions years prior to the EOT.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate outcomes of the sequential one-stage combined procedure for treating bilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) that was diagnosed after walking age. Methods Thirty-five patients (70 hips) with late-presenting bilateral DDH were treated with the sequential one-stage combined procedure. Hips were reclassified according to the operative time and divided into the first and the second operated hips. The outcomes were compared clinically and radiographically between the two sides preoperatively and postoperatively. Results The mean interval time between the two procedures was 5.9 months (range: 2–9 months). The first operated hip achieved better results than did the second operated hip. A total of 68.6% (24/35) of the patients in our series had an asymmetric outcome. Conclusions The sequential one-stage combined procedure is a challenge, but a reasonable alternative surgery for bilateral DDH in children after walking age. An asymmetric outcome is a special complication of this procedure.

Water drops on the surface of conductors influence the ambient electric fields and decrease corona inception voltage. A conductor coated with TiO(2) film was developed to prevent effects of droplets. The corona inception voltage of conductors in different conditions was measured. The experiments were designed to study effects of three factors including UV-light, the position of water drops, and mass fraction of TiO(2) on corona discharge. The influences on the three factors to the corona inception discharge were summarised. Different processes of corona occurred when a water drop on upper or lower surface of the conductor. The contact angle is smaller when the conductor is coated with the paint containing TiO(2) because TiO(2) is hydrophilic under UV-light. UV-light can improve TiO(2)'s hydrophilia. The ingredients of the paint are insulated. These ingredients prevent the adsorption of space charge and enlarge ionisation layers, thus the corona discharge will be restrained. With the increase of TiO(2)'s mass fraction under the UV-light, the impact of water drops to discharge is further inhibited and the corona inception discharge voltage is increased.

In recent studies on the recognition of graphitized gouges within the principal slip zone (PSZ) of the Longmenshan fault in China, we proposed that the presence of graphite might be evidence of fault slip. Here, we characterized the clay- and carbonaceous-rich gouges of the active fault zone of the Longmenshan fault belt using samples collected from the trench at Jiulong, which was deformed during the 2008 MW-7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, to determine if graphite is present and study both the processes influencing fault behavior and the associated faulting mechanism. Mineralogical and geochemical analyses of the Jiulong trench sample show the presence of a hydrothermal mineral (i.e., dickite) integrated with dramatic relative chemical enrichment and relative depletion within a yellowish zone, suggesting the presence of vigorous high-temperature fluid–rock interactions, which are likely the fingerprint of thermal pressurization. This is further supported by the absence of carbonaceous materials (CMs) given the spectrometric data obtained. Interestingly, the Raman parameters measured near the carbonaceous-rich gouge fall within the recognized range of graphitization in the mature fault zone, implying the origin of a mature fault, as shown in the companion paper. According to both the sharp boundary within the very recent coseismic rupture zone of the 2008 MW-7.9 Wenchuan earthquake and the presence of kinetically unstable dickite, it is strongly implied that the yellow/altered gouge likely formed from a recent coseismic event as aconsequence of hydrothermal fluid penetration. We further surmise that the CM characteristics varied according to several driving reactions, e.g., transient hydrothermal heating versus long-term geological metamorphism and sedimentation.

Graphitization of carbonaceous materials (CM) has been experimentally demonstrated as potential evidence of seismic slip within a fault gouge. The southern segment of the Longmenshan fault, a CM-rich-gouge fault, accommodated coseismic slip during the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake and potentially preserves a record of processes that occurred on the fault during the slip event. Here, we present a multi-technique characterization of CM within the active fault zone of the Longmenshan fault from the Wenchuan earthquake Fault Scientific Drilling-1. By contrast with field observations, graphite is pervasively and only distributed in the gouge zone, while heterogeneously crystallized CM are present in the surrounding breccia. The composite dataset that is presented, which includes the localized graphite layer along the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake principal slip zone, demonstrates that graphite is widely distributed within the active fault zone. The widespread occurrence of graphite, a seismic slip indicator, reveals that surface rupturing events commonly occur along the Longmenshan fault and are characteristic of this tectonically active region.

In recent works on the determination of graphitization of carbonaceous materials (CM) within the principal slip zone (PSZ) of the Longmenshan fault (China), we demonstrated that the formation of graphite, resulted from strain and frictional heating, could be evidence of past seismic slip. Here we utilize Raman Spectroscopy of CM (RSCM) on the CM-bearing gouges in the fault zone of the Longmenshan fault belt, at the borehole depth of 760 m (FZ760) from the Wenchuan earthquake Fault Scientific Drilling project-1 (WFSD-1), to quantitatively characterize CM and further retrieve ancient fault deformation information in the active fault. RSCM shows that graphitization of CM is intense in the fault core with respect to the damage zone, with the graphitized carbon resembling those observed on experimentally formed graphite that was frictionally generated. Importantly, compared to the recognized active fault zone of the Longmenshan fault, the RSCM of measured CM-rich gouge shows a higher degree of graphitization, likely derived from high-temperature-perturbation faulting events. It implies that FZ760 accommodated numerous single-event displacement and/or at higher normal stresses and/or in the absence of pore fluid and/or along a more localized slip surface(s). Because graphite is a well-known lubricant, we surmise that the presence of the higher degree graphitized CM within FZ760 will reduce the fault strength and inefficiently accumulate tectonic stress during the seismic cycle at the current depth, and further infer a plausible mechanism for fault propagation at the borehole depth of 590 m during the Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake.

This article presented a hybrid cryocooler which combines the room temperature displacers and the pulse tube in one system. Compared with a traditional pulse tube cryocooler, the system uses the rod-less ambient displacer to recover the expansion work from the pulse tube cold end to improve the efficiency while still keeps the advantage of the pulse tube cryocooler with no moving parts at the cold region. In the meantime, dual-opposed configurations for both the compression pistons and displacers reduce the cooler vibration to a very low level. In the experiments, a lowest no-load temperature of 38.5 K has been obtained and the cooling power at 80K was 26.4 W with an input electric power of 290 W. This leads to an efficiency of 24.2% of Carnot, marginally higher than that of an ordinary pulse tube cryocooler. The hybrid configuration herein provides a very competitive option when a high efficiency, high-reliability and robust cryocooler is desired.
