High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) project is being constructed by the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS). An in-flight High energy FRagment Separator (HFRS) at HIAF was designed to study the properties of rare isotopes far away from the line of beta stability and their involved nuclear reactions of astrophysics interests. HFRS is a two-stage magnetic system which consists of Pre-Separator and Main-Separator. The maximum magnetic rigidity of 25 Tm was designed in particular for experiments with very neutron-rich rare isotopes beams and studies of hypernuclei and Δ-resonances in exotic nuclei. A dispersive mode and an achromatic mode were designed for different experimental requirements. The HFRS device can be used to separate and purify the rare isotopes produced by the projectile fragmentation of all primary beams up to Uranium or by the projectile fission of Uranium ions via Bρ-ΔE-Bρ method. The detailed HFRS ion-optical design including the first order and the higher order, and the magnet specification were presented in this paper.

Fluorine is one of the most interesting elements in nuclear astrophysics, where the ^{19}F(p,α)^{16}O reaction is of crucial importance for Galactic ^{19}F abundances and CNO cycle loss in first generation Population III stars. As a day-one campaign at the Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics experimental facility, we report direct measurements of the essential ^{19}F(p,αγ)^{16}O reaction channel. The γ-ray yields were measured over E_{c.m.}=72.4-344 keV, covering the Gamow window; our energy of 72.4 keV is unprecedentedly low, reported here for the first time. The experiment was performed under the extremely low cosmic-ray-induced background environment of the China JinPing Underground Laboratory, one of the deepest underground laboratories in the world. The present low-energy S factors deviate significantly from previous theoretical predictions, and the uncertainties are significantly reduced. The thermonuclear ^{19}F(p,αγ)^{16}O reaction rate has been determined directly at the relevant astrophysical energies.

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) based on storage rings is a powerful technique for mass measurement of short-lived exotic nuclei. The transition energy γ t of the storage ring is a vital parameter of the IMS technique. It is difficult to measure the γ t and its relation to momentum spread or circulating length, especially to monitor the variation of γ t during experiments. An experimental investigation on the γ t has been performed for the IMS experiment at the Cooler Storage Ring of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSRe). With the velocity measured by two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, the γ t as a function of orbital length can be determined. The influences of higher order magnetic field components on the γ t function were inferred for isochronous correction. This paper introduces and investigates the influence of dipole magnetic fields, quadrupole magnetic fields and sextupole magnetic fields on the γ t function. With the quadrupole magnets and sextupole magnets corrections, a mass resolution of 171332 (FWHM) and σ ( T ) ∕ T = 1 . 34 × 1 0 − 6 were reached, which shall be compared with 31319 (FWHM) and σ ( T ) ∕ T = 7 . 35 × 1 0 − 6 obtained without correction.

All operational electron cooling systems employ a DC electron beam that generated by an electrostatic electron gun. This paper is devoted to the simulation of the electron cooling process with a pulsed electron beam, in which the electron cooling, Intra Beam Scattering and the space-charge field of the pulsed electron beam are included. A simulation of coasting ion beam cooling with a pulsed electron beam showed that the ion beam is cooled down to a small momentum spread, and all ions are captured by the bucket created by the pulsed electron beam space-charge field simultaneously. Finally, a cold pulsed ion beam with length the same as the electron pulse is obtained. In this article, the structure of the particle tracking simulation code is described and the simulation results of coasting and bunched ion beam cooling with a pulsed electron beam are presented and analyzed. Moreover, the preliminary experiment on CSRm is introduced and the result shows an agreement with the simulation.

The use of an electronic cooling system at the High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) accelerator complex, which is being developed at the Institute of Modern Physics (China), to improve the efficiency of ion injection into the accelerator and reduce the spread of ion pulses in the beam has been proposed. Electron cooling of the ion beam was carried out due to the interaction of ions with a continuous electron beam with a current of up to 3 A, energy of up to 450 keV, and energy stability at the level of 10–4 or better. The electron beam energy recuperation was carried out at the expense of a power source with a power of 5–15 kW, which was located at the top of a high-voltage column—a high-voltage terminal. The operation of a prototype of power transmission system, which was based on a cascade transformer with a volumetric coil, has been considered. Such a transformer has a relatively low scattering inductance, which can significantly reduce the number of capacitors to compensate for it. It has been shown that this design made it possible to transfer power of up to 40 kW at small dimensions of the transformer and heat dissipation in it was not more than 10 kW.

A Laser Ion Source (LIS) can produce high charge state and high intensity ion beams (∼emA), especially, refractory metallic ion beams, which makes it a promising candidate as an ion source for heavy ion cancer therapy facilities and future accelerator complexes, where pulsed high intensity and high charged heavy ion beams are required. However, it is difficult for the LIS to obtain a long pulse width while ensuring high current intensity, thus limiting the application of the LIS. To solve the conflict, magnetic fields are proposed to confine the expansion of the laser produced plasma. With a solenoid along the normal direction to the target surface, the lateral adiabatic expansion of the laser ablation plasma is suppressed which extends the pulse width of the ion beam effectively. The characteristics of laser ablation plasma with solenoid field confinement will be presented and discussed in this paper.

A new project, high intensity heavy ion accelerator facility (HIAF), is currently under design and construction in China. The HIAF front end, composed of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources, low energy beam transport (LEBT) and radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), will produce and provide beams of ions with a mass up to uranium at a beam energy of $0.5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{u}$. The typical beam intensity is designed up to 2 emA for the uranium beam with a charge state of $35+$. This paper presents an overall design of the front end for HIAF and discusses several key issues in the design. By modeling the beam extraction from the ECR source, we got a reliable starting beam condition to perform the design. Transverse coupling of the beam from the source was elaborated. To relieve the coupling we implanted two solenoids after the source. Space charge effect in the charge state selection of the ion source was evaluated. An overall space charge compensation degree of no less than 70% was predicted. A beam dynamics simulation was performed by using the initial particle distribution obtained from the extraction modeling. The simulation resulted in development of a beam collimation system in the LEBT to confine the transverse emittance. The RFQ design will follow the development of LEAF-RFQ at Institute of Modern Physics, which has successfully commissioned with several beams and demonstrated as an excellent design. Recent beam commissioning results of LEAF-RFQ will also be presented in this paper.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne particle detector designed to probe electrons and gamma-rays in the few GeV to 10 TeV energy range, as well as cosmic-ray proton and nuclei components between 10 GeV and 100 TeV. The silicon–tungsten tracker–converter is a crucial component of DAMPE. It allows the direction of incoming photons converting into electron–positron pairs to be estimated, and the trajectory and charge (Z) of cosmic-ray particles to be identified. It consists of 768 silicon micro-strip sensors assembled in 6 double layers with a total active area of 6.6 m 2 . Silicon planes are interleaved with three layers of tungsten plates, resulting in about one radiation length of material in the tracker. Internal alignment parameters of the tracker have been determined on orbit, with non-showering protons and helium nuclei. We describe the alignment procedure and present the position resolution and alignment stability measurements.

The Spectrometer Ring (SRing) is an essential part of the High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility project (HIAF) in China. It is designed as a multi-functional experimental storage ring, which will be able to operate in three ion optical operation modes. The SRing will be used as a time-of-flight mass spectrometer for short-lived, especially neutron-rich nuclei. It will also be used to collect and cool Rare Isotope Beams (RIBs) or highly-charged stable ion beams for nuclear and atomic physics experiments. The design magnetic rigidity is in the range 1.5 to 15 Tm. The beam cooling system consists of stochastic cooling and electron cooling devices. With a help of an electron cooler, stored ions will be decelerated to a minimum energy of 30 MeV/u by RF cavities. The extraction system of the SRing will allow cooled ion beams to be extracted to an external target for further ion manipulations or reaction experiments. The general ion optics design and technical requirements of SRing subsystems are presented and discussed in this paper.

Heavy-ion fusion reactions, such as 12 C+ 12 C, play crucial roles in stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis in massive stars . However, limited by the low cross section and large background, it is very challenging to study the reactions at stellar energies. We have developed a 1024-channel prototype TPC named MATE (Multi-purpose time projection chamber for nuclear AsTrophysical and Exotic beam experiments) to study these reactions at stellar energies. The design of our prototype TPC and its performance are described, and the preliminary results of a commissioning experiment for measuring the 12 C( 12 C, α 0 ) 20 Ne reaction at E cm = 3.0 MeV are presented. Perspectives of future experiments for the 12 C+ 12 C fusion cross section measurement are also provided.

A new project, High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), is currently being under design and construction in China. HIAF will provide beams of stable and unstable heavy ions with high energies, high intensities and high quality. An overview of new opportunities for atomic physics using highly charged ions and radioactive heavy ions at HIAF is given.

The construction of the high-intensity heavy-ion accelerator facility (HIAF) Yang et al. (2013) [1] at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Science (IMP, CAS), has begun recently in Huizhou, Guangdong province, China. One of the devices of the HIAF is the Spectrometer Ring (SRing). Designed with two magnetic alloy (MA) loaded cavities to decelerate the heavy-ion beams, such as a 238U + 92 beam from 800 to 30 MeV/u, the SRing will serve as a multi-functional experimental storage ring. The MA cavity design works in the frequency range of 1.006-0.503 MHz with a maximum voltage of 50 kV and peak power of 220 kW. This study describes the variable-harmonic RF deceleration cavity design and a performance test of Chinese MA cores.

Electron cooling is used for damping both transverse and longitudinal oscillations of heavy particle. The cooling of bunch ion beam (with RF voltage on) is important part of experiments with inner target, ion collision system, stacking and RF manipulation. The short length of an ion bunch increases the peak luminosity, gives a start-time point for using of the time-of-flight methods and obtains a short extraction beam pulse. This article describes the review of last experiments with electron cooling carried out on the CSRm, CSRe (China) and COSY (Germany) storage rings. The accumulated experience may be used for the project of electron cooler on 2.5 MeV (NICA) and 0.5 MeV HIAF for obtaining high luminosity, depressing beam-beam effects and RF manipulation.

HIAF-BRing, a new multipurpose accelerator facility of the High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility project, requires an extremely high vacuum lower than 10 −11 mbar to fulfill the requirements of radioactive beam physics and high energy density physics. To achieve the required process pressure, the bench-marked codes of VAKTRAK and Molflow+ are used to simulate the pressure profiles of the BRing system. In order to ensure the accuracy of the implementation of VAKTRAK, the computational results are verified by measured pressure data and compared with a new simulation code BOLIDE on the current synchrotron CSRm. Since the verification of VAKTRAK has been done, the pressure profiles of the BRing are calculated with different parameters such as conductance, out-gassing rates and pumping speeds. According to the computational results, the optimal parameters are selected to achieve the required pressure for the BRing.

Electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources are widely used in heavy ion accelerators for their advantages in producing high quality intense beams of highly charged ions. However, it exists challenges in the design of the Q/A selection systems for mixed high intensity ion beams to reach sufficient Q/A resolution while controlling the beam emittance growth. Moreover, as the emittance of beam from ECR ion sources is coupled, the matching of phase space to post accelerator, for a wide range of ion beam species with different intensities, should be carefully studied. In this paper, the simulation and experimental results of the Q/A selection system at the LECR4 platform are shown. The formation of hollow cross section heavy ion beam at the end of the Q/A selector is revealed. A reasonable interpretation has been proposed, a modified design of the Q/A selection system has been committed for HIRFL-SSC linac injector. The features of the new design including beam simulations and experiment results are also presented.

Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied in the storage ring CSRe to measure the masses of the neutron-rich Sc52–54 and Ti54,56 nuclei. The new mass excess values ME(Sc52)=−40525(65) keV, ME(Sc53)=−38910(80) keV, and ME(Sc54)=−34485(360) keV, deviate from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012 by 2.3σ, 2.8σ, and 1.7σ, respectively. These large deviations significantly change the systematics of the two-neutron separation energies of scandium isotopes. The empirical shell gap extracted from our new experimental results shows a significant subshell closure at N=32 in scandium, with a similar magnitude as in calcium. Moreover, we present ab initio calculations using the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group based on two- and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory. The theoretical results confirm the existence of a substantial N=32 shell gap in Sc and Ca with a decreasing trend towards lighter isotones, thus providing a consistent picture of the evolution of the N=32 magic number from the pf into the sd shell.

The radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) group at Peking University has built a window-type RFQ, operating at 162.5 MHz in continuous-wave (cw) mode. It is designed to accelerate a 50 mA deuteron beam from 50 keV to 1 MeV with a vane length of 1.809 m. The cavity was fabricated in two segments using 100% oxygen-free electronic (OFE) copper. Using an iterative assembly and measurement procedure for the precise alignment of the two segments, we reduced the assembly errors to within $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{mm}$. The radio frequency (rf) measurements of the whole cavity show excellent rf properties, with the measured intrinsic Q-value of 8962, which equates to 96% of the simulated value for OFE copper. We also investigated field fluctuations caused by misalignment between the two segments, and studied their impact on the beam transmission using beam dynamics simulations. During field tuning, we compiled a set of unique tuning rules for the window-type RFQ. After tuning, the maximal field unflatness of the single quadrant is within $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2%$, and the asymmetry of the four quadrants is within $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1%$. During rf conditioning, the cw power of the cavity reached 55 kW within 32 hours, and we have recorded nearly seven hours of stable running at a cw power of 50 kW. The measured bremsstrahlung spectrum shows that the accelerator needs 49.9 kW to generate the intervane voltage of 60 kV, with a specific shunt impedance of $130.5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{k}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}\text{ }\mathrm{m}$. An ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ ion beam extracted from an electron cyclotron resonance ion source was used for the beam commissioning, because deuteron beam acceleration will bring a serious radiation field. We achieved stable and robust acceleration of about 1.5 mA cw ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ beam for one hour.

We construct a sample of 70 clusters using data from XMM-Newton and Planck to investigate the $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}-Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ scaling relation and the cool-core influences on the relation. $Y_{\rm SZ,XMM}$ is calculated by accurate de-projected temperature and electron number density profiles derived from XMM-Newton. $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}$ is the latest Planck data restricted to our precise X-ray size $\theta_{\rm 500}$. To study the cool-core influences on$Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}-Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ scaling relation, we apply two criteria, limits of central cooling time and classic mass deposition rate, to distinguish cool-core clusters (CCCs) from non-cool-core clusters (NCCCs). We also use $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}$ from other papers, which are derived from different methods, to confirm our results. The intercept and slope of the$Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}-Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ scaling relation are $A=-0.86 \pm 0.30$, $B=0.83 \pm 0.06$. The intrinsic scatter is $\sigma_{\rm ins}= 0.14 \pm 0.03$. The ratio of \mbox{$Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}/Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$} is $1.03 \pm 0.05$, which is perfectly agreed with unity. Discrepancies of $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}-Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ scaling relation between CCCs and NCCCs are found in observation. They are independent of cool-core classification criteria and $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}$ calculation methods, although discrepancies are more significant under the classification criteria of classic mass deposition rate. The intrinsic scatter of CCCs (0.04) is quite small compared to that of NCCCs (0.27). The ratio of $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}/Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ for CCCs is $0.89 \pm 0.05$, suggesting that CCCs' $Y_{\rm SZ,XMM}$ may overestimate SZ signal. By contrast, the ratio of $Y_{\rm SZ,Planck}/Y_{\rm SZ, XMM}$ for NCCCs is $1.14 \pm 0.12$, which indicates that NCCCs' $Y_{\rm SZ,XMM}$ may underestimate SZ signal., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted by RAA

The Be X-ray pulsar (BeXRP) SXP 59 underwent a giant outburst in 2017 with a peak X-ray luminosity of $1.1\times10^{38}$ erg~s$^{-1}$. We report on the X-ray behaviour of SXP 59 with the XMM--Newton and NuSTAR observations collected at the outburst peak, decay, and the low luminosity states. The pulse profiles are energy dependent, the pulse fraction increases with the photon energy and saturates at $\sim$ 65% above 10 keV. It is difficult to constrain the change in the geometry of emitting region with the limited data. Nevertheless, because the pulse shape generally has a double-peaked profile at high luminosity and a single peak profile at low luminosity, we prefer the scenario that the source transited from the super-critical state to the sub-critical regime. This result would further imply that the neutron star (NS) in SXP 59 has a typical magnetic field. We confirm that the soft excess revealed below 2 keV is dominated by a cool thermal component. On the other hand, the NuSTAR spectra can be described as a combination of the non-thermal component from the accretion column, a hot blackbody emission, and an iron emission line. The temperature of the hot thermal component decreases with time, while its size remains constant ($R \sim 0.6$ km). The existence of the hot blackbody at high luminosity cannot be explained with the present accretion theories for BeXRPs. It means that either more sophisticated spectral models are required to describe the X-ray spectra of luminous BeXRPs, or there is non-dipole magnetic field close to the NS surface., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 2 table, published in MNRAS

DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a spaceborne high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector , successfully launched in December 2015. It is designed to probe astroparticle physics in the broad energy range from few GeV to 100 TeV. The scientific goals of DAMPE include the identification of possible signatures of Dark Matter annihilation or decay, the study of the origin and propagation mechanisms of cosmic-ray particles, and gamma-ray astronomy . DAMPE consists of four sub-detectors: a plastic scintillator strip detector, a Silicon–Tungsten tracKer–converter (STK), a BGO calorimeter and a neutron detector . The STK is composed of six double layers of single-sided silicon micro-strip detectors interleaved with three layers of tungsten for photon conversions into electron–positron pairs . The STK is a crucial component of DAMPE, allowing to determine the direction of incoming photons, to reconstruct tracks of cosmic rays and to estimate their absolute charge (Z). We present the in-flight performance of the STK based on two years of in-flight DAMPE data, which includes the noise behavior, signal response, thermal and mechanical stability, alignment and position resolution.

The High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) is under construction. The lattice of HIAF/BRing is the same for both heavy ion beams and proton beam. Since the proton beam will cross the transition energy during acceleration, a γt jump scheme with maximum Δ γt of 2 is designed to reduce the growth of momentum spread and influence of collective effects near transition. The broadband impedance of the ceramic-lined rings in the vacuum chamber has been significantly reduced by a 2 μm-copper coating. Thus, the impedance model has been updated for analyzing collective effects in the BRing. The longitudinal collective effects can be compensated by the multi-harmonic feedforward system. The transition energy crossing point should be optimized to reduce the bunch oscillations after transitions. In both two transverse planes, the normalized emittance growth given by the Simulation Platform for Collective Instabilities (CISP) are stopped by the broadband impedance near transition and there is no obvious transverse collective instability, which is quite different from the Vlasov results. More researches will be performed to find out the reason.

At the heavy ion storage ring HIRFL-CSRe an electron cooler is operated to improve the beam conditions for experiments. The properties of cooled beams have been studied. The longitudinal beam dynamics during the cooling process was measured by a resonant Schottky detector. The dependencies of the parameters electron beam density and profile on cooling times were investigated. The friction force was measured directly with the aid of the high voltage system of the cooler and with the application of the beam bunching system as well. An experiment with bunched cold beam showed a dependence of the bunch length on the beam density.

Evaluation of transverse impedances and collective instabilities is important for determining whether a transverse feedback system or damping schemes should be prepared in the BRing (Booster Ring) at the HIAF (High Intensity Heavy-ion Accelerator Facility). In this paper, some dominant transverse impedances are estimated to build a transverse impedance model of the BRing. With this model, all potential transverse instabilities and their growth times or rates are analyzed by analytical methods or simulations, and the results agree with each other. The growth times of some instabilities are shorter than the duration times of corresponding manipulations, which shows transverse instabilities may have many detrimental impacts on the BRing. To cure the transverse instabilities, a transverse feedback system will be proposed in the design of the BRing. Besides, this paper not only shows the transverse instabilities in the BRing, but also provides the whole method for estimating them in the design of a new accelerator facility.

The Be X-ray pulsar SMC X-3 underwent an extra long and ultraluminous giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March. The peak X-ray luminosity is up to $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s, suggesting a mildly super-Eddington accretion onto the strongly magnetized neutron star. It therefore bridges the gap between the Galactic Be/X-ray binaries ($L_{\rm X}^{\rm peak} \leq 10^{38}$ erg/s) and the ultraluminous X-ray pulsars ($L_{\rm X}^{\rm peak} \geq 10^{40}$ erg/s) found in nearby galaxies. A number of observations were carried out to observe the outburst. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive phase-resolved analysis on the high quality data obtained with the Nustar and XMM-Newton, which were observed at a high and intermediate luminosity levels. In order to get a better understanding on the evolution of the whole extreme burst, we take the Swift results at the low luminosity state into account as well. At the early stage of outburst, the source shows a double-peak pulse profile, the second main peak approaches the first one and merges into the single peak at the low luminosity. The second main peak vanishes beyond 20 keV, and its radiation becomes much softer than that of the first main peak. The line widths of fluorescent iron line vary dramatically with phases, indicating a complicated geometry of accretion flows. In contrast to the case at low luminosity, the pulse fraction increases with the photon energy. International audience; The design and optimization of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) are crucial for the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) project, a proposed future Higgs/Z factory. Following the reference design of the International Large Detector (ILD), a set of silicon-tungsten sampling ECAL geometries are implemented into the Geant4 simulation, whose performance is then scanned using Arbor algorithm. The photon energy response at different ECAL longitudinal structures is analyzed, and the separation performance between nearby photon showers with different ECAL transverse cell sizes is investigated and parametrized. The overall performance is characterized by a set of physics benchmarks, including νν H events where Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons (EM objects) or gluons (jets) and Z→τ+τ− events. Based on these results, we propose an optimized ECAL geometry for the CEPC project.

Isochronous mass spectrometry was applied to measure isomeric yield ratios of fragmentation reaction products. This approach is complementary to conventional gamma-ray spectroscopy in particular for measuring yield ratios for long-lived isomeric states. Isomeric yield ratios for the high-spin I = 19/2 states in the mirror nuclei 53Fe and 53Co are measured to study angular momentum population following the projectile fragmentation of 78Kr at energies of 480A MeV on a beryllium target. The 19/2 state isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced from different projectiles in the literature have also been extracted as a function of mass number difference between projectile and fragment (mass loss). The results are compared to ABRABLA07 model calculations. The isomeric ratios of 53Fe produced using different projectiles suggest that the theory underestimates not only the previously reported dependence on the spin but also the dependence on the mass loss., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The SSC-LINAC project is launched at Institute of Modern Physics in China to develop one new linear accelerator (LINAC) injector for separated sector cyclotron (SSC). It includes a high charge state ion source, a CW RFQ and a DTL section, and is designed to accelerate ions up to 580 keV/u. Now the ion source and the RFQ cavity have been installed in the main hall and the beam commissioning has been carried out. Two kinds of ions have been tested, 16 O 5+ and 40 Ar 8+ . The experiment result of 16 O 5+ is: the measured beam current is 180 μA at entrance of RFQ and 150 μA at exit of RFQ. The output energy of 16 O 5+ is 141.89 keV/u. The measured beam current is 210 μA at entrance of RFQ and 198 μA at exit of RFQ for 40 Ar 8+ . The output energy of 40 Ar 8+ is 142.78 keV/u. The experiment results agree with the design parameters of RFQ very well. This paper presents: the design consideration of beam dynamics, RF and cooling structure design; measurement of the cold model; high power test of RFQ and beam commissioning result.

The High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) is a new accelerator complex under design at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP). The facility is aiming at the production of high intensity heavy ion beams for a wide range of experiments in high energy density physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics and other applications. It consists of a superconducting electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source and an intense proton ion source, a linear accelerator, a 34 Tm booster synchrotron ring, a 43 Tm multifunction compression synchrotron ring, a 13 Tm high precision spectrometer ring and several experimental terminals. A magnetized electron cooling device is supposed to be used in the booster ring for decreasing the transverse emittance of injected beams. The conceptual design and main parameters of this cooler are presented in this paper.

The Be X-ray pulsar, SMC X-3 underwent a giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March, which was monitored with the Swift satellite. During the outburst, its broadband flux increased dramatically, and the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity reached an extreme value of $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s around August 24. Using the Swift/XRT data, we measure the observed pulse frequency of the neutron star to compute the orbital parameters of the binary system. After applying the orbital corrections to Swift observations, we find that the spin frequency increases steadily from 128.02 mHz on August 10 and approach to spin equilibrium $\sim 128.74$ mHz in 2017 January with an unabsorbed luminosity of $L_{\rm X} \sim 2\times10^{37}$ erg/s, indicating a strong dipolar magnetic field $B \sim 6.8\times10^{12}$ G at the neutron star surface. The spin-up rate is tightly correlated with its X-ray luminosity during the super-Eddington outburst. The pulse profile in the Swift/XRT data is variable, showing double peaks at the early stage of outburst and then merging into a single peak at low luminosity. Additionally, we report that a low temperature ($kT \sim 0.2$ keV) thermal component emerges in the phase-averaged spectra as the flux decays, and it may be produced from the outer truncated disk or the boundary layer between the exterior flow and the magnetosphere., 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 table, conclusions unchanged, accepted for publication in ApJ

Accuracy of nuclear mass measurements in storage rings depends critically on the accuracy with which the revolution times of stored ions can be obtained. In such experiments, micro-channel plates (MCP) are used as timing detectors. Due to large phase space of injected secondary beams, a large number of ions cannot be stored in the ring and is lost within the first few revolutions. However, these ions interact with the detector and can saturate the MCP and thus deteriorate its performance. In order to eliminate such effects, a fast, pulsed high-voltage power supply (PHVPS) has been employed which keeps the detector switched-off during the first few revolutions. The new detector setup was taken into operation at the Experimental Cooler-Storage-Ring CSRe in Lanzhou and resulted in a significant improvement of the detector amplitude and efficiency characteristics.

In isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) established in heavy-ion storage rings the revolution times of the stored secondary ions should be independent of their velocity spread. However, this isochronous condition is fulfilled only in first order and in a small range of revolution times. To correct for the non-isochronicity an additional measure of the velocity or magnetic rigidity of each stored ion is required. For this purpose two new time-of-flight (TOF) detectors were installed in a straight section of the experimental Cooler Storage Ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The performance of the new time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, which is crucial for the achievable efficiencies and mass resolving power, was significantly improved. The time resolution of the TOF detector in offline tests was σ = 18.5 ± 2 ps . The detector setup was put into operation with a stable beam of 78Kr.

The Type IIn supernova (SN) 1978K in the nearby galaxy NGC 1313 has remained bright in multiwavelengths for more than $\sim 25$ yr. The archival data of SN 1978K collected with ROSAT, ASCA, XMM-Newton, and Chandra from 1990 to 2006 show no significant variation of the soft X-ray emission but a hint of flux decrease in hard X-rays. In this work, we perform a detailed analysis using more than 15 yr of XMM-Newton observations. Both the 0.5-2 keV and 2-10 keV light-curves decline as $t^{-1}$ from 2000 to 2015. The transition of light curve profiles can be explained in a way that the reverse shock was radiative at an early phase and then became adiabatic at late times. Such a scenario is also supported by the spectral analysis results. The Ion Source Group at IMP has been undertaking a series of high intensity ion beam R&D projects. The first project is the development of the intense proton source and its low energy beam transport system (LEBT) for China Initiative Accelerator Driven Sub-Critical reactor (CiADS). The specific characteristics of the proton source are long-term reliability and flexible beam manipulation for the commissioning need of the Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerators. The LEBT is used to deliver 35 keV H+ beam to the entrance of a 2.1 MeV RFQ . And then the 2.1 MeV proton beam is further accelerated by the superconducting cavities to 25 MeV and eventually goes into a high power beam dumper. Another project is the development of the intense ion source for Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics experiments (JUNA). The ion source was expected to provide 10 emA H+, 10 emA He+ or 2.5 emA He2+ beams for the study of (p, γ), (p, α), (α, p) and (α, γ) reactions in the first phase of the JUNA project. The main challenges of the ion source for JUNA project are production of intense He2+ beam, control of the beam contaminations and beam commissioning a wide beam energy range (70~800 keV) . In this paper, the studies of these intense beam injector systems, for instance, beam intensities, species and ratio, beam transmission efficiency in the LEBT and also the beam optics matching to the downstream accelerator systems will be presented.

The new linac injector SSC-LINAC has been proposed to replace the existing Separator Sector Cyclotron (SSC). This effort is to improve the beam efficiency of the Heavy Ion Research Facility of Lanzhou (HIRFL). As a key component of the linac, a continuous-wave (CW) mode high charge state heavy ion radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator has been designed. It accelerates ions with the ratio of mass to charge up to 7 from 3.728 keV/u to 143 keV/u. The requirements of CW mode operation and the transportation of intense beam have been considered as the greatest challenges. The design is based on 238U34+ beams, whose current is 0.5 pmA (0.5 particle mili-ampere, which is the measured 17 emA electric current divided by charge state of heavy ions). It achieves the transmission efficiency of 94% with 2508.46 mm long vanes in simulation. To improve the transmission efficiency and quality of the beams, the phase advance has been taken into account to analyze the reasons of beam loss and emittance growth. Parametric resonance and beam mismatch have been carefully avoided by adjusting the structure parameters. The parameter-sensitivity of the design is checked by transportation simulations of various input beams. To verify the applicability of machining, the effects of different vane manufacturing methods on beam dynamics are presented in this paper.

Age of a pulsar is a useful parameter, but it is difficult to get the age from observation. We can only derive the characteristic age from the observed parameters: spin period (P) and period derivative (Ṗ). In this paper, we discussed the relationship between characteristic age and magnetic field of a pulsar. Monte Carlo simulation is also used to support the idea: it is useless to study the magnetic field evolution using characteristic age. From some observation evidences we get that: the characteristic age cannot be used as true age, especially for millisecond pulsar (MSP). The difference between them is also discussed. From the studying of breaking index and MSP's initial spin period (P0), we get the conclusion that: the problem cannot be resolved using different radiation models.

A new heavy-ion linac within a continuous-wave (CW) 4-rod radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) was designed and constructed as the injector for the separated-sector cyclotron (SSC) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility at Lanzhou (HIRFL). In this paper, we present the development of and the beam commissioning results for the 53.667 MHz CW RFQ. In the beam dynamics design, the transverse phase advance at zero current, sigma(0 perpendicular to), is maintained at a relatively high level compared with the longitudinal phase advance (sigma(0 parallel to)) to avoid parametric resonance. A quasi-equipartitioning design strategy was applied to control the emittance growth and beam loss. The installation error of the electrodes was checked using a FARO 3D measurement arm during the manufacturing procedure. This method represents a new approach to measuring the position shifts of electrodes in a laboratory environment and provides information regarding the manufacturing quality. The experimental results of rf measurements exhibited general agreement with the simulation results obtained using CST code. During on-line beam testing of the RFQ, two kinds of ion beams (Ar-40(8+) and O-16(5+)) were transported and accelerated to 142.8 keV/u, respectively. These results demonstrate that the SSC-Linac has made a significant progress. And the design scheme and technology experiences developed in this work can be applied to other future CW RFQs.

Relative yields of fragments following the 78Kr projectile fragmentation in a beryllium target were measured in a storage ring by using isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS). Odd–even staggering of the relative fragment yields is observed and can be explained by the odd–even staggering of the particle-emission threshold energies. IMS is a complementary technique to γ-ray spectroscopy for measuring isomeric ratios, in particular for nuclides with long lifetimes. It was found that the isomeric yield ratios in 53Fe are almost constant for different longitudinal momenta.

With the commissioning of the Cooler Storage Ring at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSR), a pilot experiment operating the CSRe in isochronous mode to test the power of HIRFL-CSR for measuring the mass of the short-lived nucleus was performed in December of 2007. The transition point γt of CSRe in isochronous mode is 1.395 which corresponds to the energy about 368 MeV/u for the ions with atomic number-to-charge ratio A/q = 2. The fragments with A/q = 2 of 36 Ar were injected into CSRe and their revolution frequencies were measured with a fast time pick-up detector with a thin foil in the circulating path of the ions. A mass resolution of better than 105 for m/Δm was achieved.

HIRFL-CSR, a new ion cooler-storage ring, is under construction at IMP. It is equipped with two electron cooling devices. The technical parameters of the project will be reviewed briefly. The HIRFL-CSR cooler could be a new generation cooler with some unique features such as a new electron gun capable to produce hollow electron beam, electrostatic bending plates and a new structure of solenoid coils at the cooling section. The commissioning of the first cooler with electron beam at IMP was completed. The second cooler with energy 300 keV is under final assembling.

The magnetic and transport properties of the Ga-doped charge-ordering state La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 have been studied. A current-dependent large positive magnetoresistance (1080%) at 5 K was observed. These observations axe interpreted in terms of the spin-dependent tunnelling process between ferromagnetic clusters embedded in an antiferromagnetic matrix.

In this paper, C-60/Ag bilayers were prepared on mica and NaCl substrates by thermal evaporation, the temperature of the substrates was kept at 300 K during the fabrication of the sample. The electrical conductance of the film was measured during C-60 covering. An anomalous peak of conductivity was observed when the thickness of the C-60 overlayer was around 1.6 nm, implying that 1-2 monolayer(s) of the C-60 coverlayer were "metallic". A possible mechanism is discussed.

We use a sample of 39 galaxy clusters at redshift z < 0.1 observed by XMM-Newton to investigate the relations between X-ray observables and total mass. Based on central cooling time and central temperature drop, the clusters in this sample are divided into two groups: 25 cool core clusters and 14 non-cool core clusters, respectively. We study the scaling relations of Lbol-M500, M500-T, M500-Mg and M500-YX, and also the influences of cool core on these relations. The results show that the M500-YX relation has a slope close to the standard self-similar value, has the smallest scatter and does not vary with the cluster sample. Moreover, the M500-YX relation is not affected by the cool core. Thus, the parameter of YX may be the best mass indicator., ApJ Accepted, 25 pages, 7 figures

The spectral and temporal evolution during X-ray outbursts give important clues on the accretion process and radiation mechanism in black-hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs). A set of Swift and RXTE observations were executed to monitor the 2008 outburst of the black-hole candidate Swift J1842.5-1124. We investigate these data to explore the accretion physics in BH XRBs. We carry out a comprehensive spectral and timing analysis on all the available pointing observations, including fitting both X-ray spectra and power density spectra, measuring the optical and near-ultraviolet flux density. We also search for correlations among the spectral and timing parameters. The observed properties of Swift J1842.5-1124 are similar to other BH XRBs in many respects, for example the hardness-intensity diagram and hardness-rms diagram. The type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were observed as the source started to transit from the low-hard state to the high-soft state. The frequency of QPOs correlate with intensity and the hard component index, and anti-correlate with the hardness and the total fractional rms. These relations are consistent with the Lense-Thirring precession model. The estimated U-band flux changed with the X-ray flux, while the flux density at the V band remained 0.26 mJy. These results imply that the X-ray reprocessing or the tail of thermal emission from the outer disk contributes a significant fraction of the U-band radiation; alternatively, the companion star or the jet dominates the flux at longer wavelengths., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, published in A&A

Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied to neutron-deficient $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ projectile fragments at the HIRFL-CSR facility in Lanzhou, China. Masses of a series of short-lived ${T}_{z}=\ensuremath{-}3/2$ nuclides including $^{41}\mathrm{Ti}$, $^{45}\mathrm{Cr}$, $^{49}\mathrm{Fe}$, and $^{53}\mathrm{Ni}$ have been measured with a precision of 20--40 keV. The new data enable us to test for the first time the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) in $fp$-shell nuclei. We observe that the IMME is inconsistent with the generally accepted quadratic form for the $A=53$, $T=3/2$ quartet. We perform full space shell model calculations and compare them with the new experimental results.

Using a deprojection technique, we study the X-ray properties of the galaxy cluster Abell 1835 observed with Chandra, including temperature, abundance, electron density, gas mass fraction, and total mass. A comparison with the results without deprojection shows that the properties do not change much. When we compare the results with those of XMM-Newton, the difference between the temperature profiles derived from Chandra and XMM-Newton data still exists, even if the point-spread function effect of XMM-Newton is corrected. To investigate the reasons for the difference, we used the spectra to cross-calibrate the temperatures. They show that the Chandra spectra can be fitted well with XMM-Newton temperatures. Furthermore, we derive the electron density profile from Chandra data with XMM-Newton temperatures and calculate the projected mass, which is consistent with the XMM-Newton mass and a little lower than the weak lensing mass at r_500.
